Oh come now! She's always known it was BS. She just wants her own power back. She's a power-hungry monster, like the rest. She always has been. This is for her, not for "good".
@@xyinterrupted I have read the testaments. It can't be used to explain away Lydia's cruelty. The books don't delve as deeply into the characters as the show does. The things this woman has done go far beyond what she was forced to do. I'm from South Africa. There were trials here for ppl who served the apartheid government, after it fell. Some were given amnesty becoz they did what the state made them do and they cudnt avoid. Others were sentenced becoz the level of brutality they showed went beyond what the state made them do and delved into their own cruelty. So trust me, I know the difference. Ppl like Lydia and Serena weren't just puppets of Gilead but monsters in their own right.
I rewatched the first series. When Fred is taking June to Jezebels he tells her all the energy produced is green. However there are lights on the buildings and streets the whole way there and the checkpoint is lit up like a Xmas tree. I thought it was just poor direction to lighting guys during filming.
I think what’s happening is that the infrastructure and access to goods and trade from around the world to sustain it is restricted. Their access to developing technology is not good, and It’s clear no nation wants to trade with Gilead, so they have reassumed mostly pre-Victorian ways. Also its easier to control people under those circumstances. Unfortunately there are countries that are probably looking to adopt Gilead’s ways because of the desperate situation of widespread sterility.

I'm glad Aunt Lydia is finally changing and seeing how much BS this system is

Not true. In the books, Aunt Lydia is subjected to all kinds of torture to transform her into an Aunt.@@insomnia610

Do none of the houses in Gilead have lights?
They use green energy so most likely they are conserving energy so they don't strain the grid or whatever
Yeah drives me nuts!!
