And in the end, they did the right thing by saving 22 women and sending Fred back to Gilead to be killed. All because of June, Commander Laurence, and Nick.
Why do the Waterfords have supporters anyway? I never understood this. Is it because Serena is pregnant? They really need to understand that having a child means nothing for people's character. It just means she had sex. And as for Fred, I thought they knew everything he did in Gilead. Maybe they're simply misinformed or they have sympathy for her because she was somewhat oppressed too. I haven't been able to watch this series since I found out that the lead, Elisabeth Moss is part of cult religion that would lead to this kind of dystopian future if allowed. I can't understand how she can be so blind to her own hypocrisy.
she was born to scientology cut her some slack, she could risk being cut off to her family if she leaves, have some empathy. she didn't choose this. just like in gilead. none of those not in power chose this.
You should watch Leah Remini's documentary about scientology. Leah Remini, like Moss had been in scientology since she was a child. The brainwashing goes deep. People in the religion truly believe they're doing good. It takes a lot to get out usually lose everything. Katie Holmes spent months preparing to leave with her daughter in secret because if she had announced her intention to leave, she would have likely lost her daughter, the same way Nicole Kidman lost her children with Tom Cruise when she left.
If it's hard to get out but she wants to do so, I'm just gonna assume that her raw emotions through these seasons are based on what she's actually feeling
This scene is the truth of what many women have endured already all over the planet. As a woman's advocate, the dangerousness of this show is that, it is so real or so close to real and when she spoke that last part of her speech, I felt she was speaking for all the real women who have had to endure subjugation. She was our voice.
It is beyond me how any survivor of sexual assault can watch this show. It must be absolutely traumatizing. Perhaps elements of it are vindicating to know that justice is ultimately served, and that the victims are representations of anyone who has endured such heinous acts of violence, but overall, I can't imagine any of that outweighing the disturbing reenactments.
Not everyone is terrorized in the same way. Not all of them heal in the same way. The therapy group is a testament to that. Every single woman was victimized for months if not years. Some needed justice in different forms. Some done know what they need but feel compelled to do certain things. My victimization was no where near as bad as most. But seeing her in court standing up to them, and how they tried to beat her down again was powerful. I will never be as strong as June. But I know taking my abuser to court will only leave me with more Trauma. And I'm better off without that trauma.
I have watched tons of "disturbing" vids and content. But I cannot stomach many of the scenes in this show specifically due to the sexual/physical violence against women.

I know June is the victim, but I just feel so sympathetic for Luke during all of this. To feel like you failed yourself and your whole family, to know that the love of your life is just suffering and there was nothing you could do to change it or save them, and then to have to not only watch them have to recount it publicly to the masses, but also have to hear about it all yourself again and all in one sitting . . . Constant brutality, man.
Everyone commenting on how the actress is in Scientology and wondering how she could stay in it while in this show, well why would she leave it when the whole world outside of it is criticizing her, why would she leave what to her is likely a safe community that accepts her, just to be ostracized by both them and the world for her ever participating in their religion if she were to leave. And before anyone comes at me I am not defending Scientology, I’m well aware of why it’s a terrible organization. Elisabeth Moss is amazing 🥲🙂. This scene and acting was outstanding . I am so proud of June and i love this show . I really want Gilead , Serena and Fred and the rest of bunch to get what they deserve !
When she started speaking to the camera, that shook me. Margaret Atwood based the book off of real life experiences of women everywhere. Women get mistreated all over the world, and their stories never get told. This scene is so powerful.
Elizabeth Moss is an actress you cannot forget. her facial structure expresses so much but I think she might be type casted as the deranged or sad actress; playing serial killers, maybe a widow, ptsd soldier, disturbed wife with an invisible husband, a hand maiden, a star wars character who has had a planet blown up and is out for revenge. i cannot see any happiness in her face.
It would have been more "efficient" if Gilead treated fertile women as goddesses and offered them the best lives instead of worthless slaves. Of course they were going to rebel one day.
I thought about everything she went through and how just stating the facts of what happened can't touch the experience of living through it in the slightest. Mere words fail to capture the full breadth of it.
There are a lot of very naive people out there. Mr Waterford in this show had a lot of grass roots support. We see the opponents of fascist government of Gilead. But we need to see the grassroots supporters of this system. The regime had a massive base of supporters as they took over.
How can this amazing actress not see the parallels between a fictional cult and the real one she’s in that hurt and created monsters? Leah Remini got hurt and Danny Masterson is a monster who is currently incarcerated
I had a hard time getting into this show due to the dark and brutal world but stuck with it as I was told it would get better. The parallels of the world of Gilead struck me and, to this day, creep me out and sincerely disgust me. I am a proud Canadian and am embarrassed and disturbed that a population of my neighboring country seems to be trying to bring out aspects of that world to ours. Religion does twisted and scary things to people, and the sheer beasts humans become in the name of religion defies belief. Anyhow, as time has gone on and the series progressed, like other fans, I cheered for the victories and will jump for joy when the remaining sick fucks get their just desserts. Namely the Waterfords, but it goes beyond them for sure. This season was utterly amazing and undoubtedly relatable to women who have suffered from so many kinds of trauma. This scene in particular is so moving! I don't want to take anything away from it; I just wish June had called her daughter by the name she chose for her, Holly, after her mom, who was a feminist activist. June gave her the name Serena chose simply to acknowledge her ability to say goodbye to Nicole so she could live a better life. Her behavior almost immediately after that negates it all, and by keeping the name, it is like a piece of her will always be in June's life. A simple statement, my daughter who was given the name Nicole but will be known as Holly Osborn(or whatever last name she goes with)going forward. I think the taking of the name back is important, and perhaps this court isn't the venue for it, but it kind of is as it removes any claims Serena even tried to have publicly. Serena hates being humiliated and finds it hard to hide it, and in this case, she would have had to or suffer the consequence or ruining their twisted happy couple having a baby image. Obviously, June and her daughter being back in Canada are reunited, and I don't know in what world their separation could be justified in favor of Serena. Also, I think it may have been helpful to mention Eleanor commited suicide, I can't recall at this moment if they admitted it was a suicide or just made it a tragic death, but the contrast of thw wife of another commander could behave in such a way in contrast to Serena really would emphasize how much of her actions were really her choice. If not minute by minute but by writing the laws of Gilead and participating in contributing to the trauma and human suffering in the name of religion... Anyway, that's my two sense :) I definitely can not wait until the next season and desperately want to see the Waterfords getting a fitting and symmetrical end. I didn't know Elizabeth Moss was a Scientologist... That is embarrassing... it is the height of irony for her to portray this character and bring this story to life, and not just for a few months in a movie, but several years as a series. I have no words... Then again, I find these days people spout principles in name only but fail to embody them. Principles for one do not equal principles for all, no doubt, but it has gone beyond common sense to sheer hypocrisy when put on the global scale. For those who happily delude themselves while living in the shallow end, those who brave the depths must suffer their stupidity and shortcomings. It is exhausting. The only way to bring value to those principles is by living them and teaching them. To be clear, I mean the principles of honesty, compassion, integrity, and the value for human life - nothing related to religion.
The Canadian government lost its mind and you are speaking about it like you are worried Canada will become like the US but you fail to acknowledge the pretty Devil that runs your country. Canada has its crimes.

Moss's acting this season was brilliant. This scene and the "Do you understand me?!?" scene serve as testaments to that.

@@rebecavc2071 Scientology.

As Joseph Lawrence said: It was never about the children, it was about power. That was just a cover up.

It takes time to realize you are in a cult.
Anyway, that's my two sense :)
I definitely can not wait until the next season and desperately want to see the Waterfords getting a fitting and symmetrical end.

You aren't wrong when it comes to daughters and Islam, but please do not be blind to the fact that Christianity does this constantly. Child marriage is /legal/ in the US in several states because Mormons and other groups encourage young marriages. In some ways this is worse than the Handmaid's tale. At least most of the wives seem of-age.
@Jack Care to elaborate?
@@jacqueleenjordan9817 Idk why you're bringing up christianity? I'm talking about Islam. Lol.
Extremist Islam. And many other extremist religions (and other groups), including Christianity.
@@scouttyra Your qualifying my statement by referencing "all" extremist religions is a sexist attempt to nullify and minimize my spotlighting Islam. You're gross.
I get so verclempted watching this
A+ for vocab for using this word. severely underused.

And she gets justice
I love this show!!!
Black women most of us have been going through handmaiden tale for centuries
NO. CUTS. I’m sure she had cue cards, but still…
I think it would have been more moving if she talked about the punishment she faced and went into details about her experience a little more
This book was assigned for me to read in the 10th grade.
I haven't seen this show, but I already find it unrealistic. Her testimony would have done jack shit to change anything. Politicians don't really care.
She’s testifying before a court, not politicians.
This is in some countries in present time! 😢
One of my friends watch this and i couldn't watch it anymore too fucked up for me
I can’t believe she is a Scientologist either but I honestly think most people are just now afraid to leave the church and wasn’t she born into it? Idk I feel like that’s at least a little less bad
Wtf are you talking about?
The way this show absolutely ruins you. The flag in the back looks like a blood splot on the wall, almost signifying the underlying tone of violence and trauma that’ll never leave June wherever she may go.
Doesn't portraying June make Elisabeth Moss think that scientology is a cult? Or is she willfully ignorant. She's SUCH a good actress ,as thus scene shows, but her involvement in scientology is jarring
Honestly I sometimes hate how much of a self righteous martyr she is. I wish ganene had gotten a better ending
From one cult to another.
she's asking for help playing this kind of role lmao
I just can't. I have my own harsh experiences with the religious, though they do not compare. I will not trust them again.
It's a fascinating series
Man I got this in my recommended ... Season 4 is not out in my country yet ... spoiler 😢
It says "Season 4" and you decided to watch anyway. That sounds like a YOU problem.
J. G. 😂
SEASON 5 WHENNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN
What about hannah???Where is she
Colorado Springs.
I can't watch her without getting creepy scientology cult vibes.
