I agree with you, BUT it's important to know and understand all those "rules" to know which ones you can break without being dissatisfied ;)
Sometimes you even HAVE to break guidelines to get a signature sound. For example the JBL L100s sound horrible on paper, and many people tried to correct those "issues" with elaborate crossover mods making it completely flat, but then came to the conclusion "it just doesn't sound like a vintage JBL anymore" but like a "boring run-off-the mill studio monitor".

Given Floyd Toole's presentation on his studies into speaker design, frequency response isn't the only factor into objective preference, let alone subjective. Ideal frequency response along with ideal off axis response represent objectively measured preference. I will concede, though, that given that people are people and some like a little more junk in the trunk or some have hearing issues and need more mids, the subjective preference can shift wildly.

On the last question. If I wanted to DIY a high end speaker. I would find what works for me, and try to duplicate it. Preferably from a brand that uses off the shelf drivers, and basic materials. And if I couldn't find out what the crossover was. I would use a mini DSP, or something similar to figure out what works best for me, and then build a passive that duplicates it, and or is more pleasing to my ears (might do this anyway, even if I knew the exact specs?). I've seen people copy (and even improve upon) other speakers with good success, and it will save a ton of time and money.
Now don't get me wrong. I've never tried this myself, nor am I saying it will definitely work. Just saying this would be the approach I would take myself. ✌️

I use a pair of 3-way Focal car audio Evo's in my home studio enclosures I built and I can now hear more of my mix than before with my old 2-ways. With higher end car audio divers with x-overs, it is possible to use them as studio monitors, even in this case Focal use the same drivers in their studio monitor line. But in general I agree with you, most mainstream car audio speakers just don't have enough attention to detail to use as studio monitors. I also did not want to deal with designing custom 3-way x-overs with drivers that would have matching impedance characteristics across the audio spectrum - That is just too much trial an error for me to handle :)

Some very interesting insights. I fully agree with your “suck it and see” attitude. Last year I started dabbling in transmission line speakers. I did a lot of reading recently and last week I completely changed my design. They sound amazing! You will not believe the level of bass I get out of my 3.5” drivers. The only drawback is that they are absolutely the ugliest speakers you will ever have the displeasure of seeing. I built them out of plastic plumbing pipe!
    Keep inspiring!

Probably most people who EQ their system are actually compensating for speaker systems which aren't linear at the volume they want to listen. It takes a pretty ridiculous combination of driver area and displacement, plus some heavy wattage, to play a modern mix at a concert volume with linear response in the audible range. So, people compensate with EQ to make up for that (it doesn't, really...usually just makes mud). I think they'd probably be thrilled with hearing a flat response if it were a linear response. It's just the relatively few people have had that experience.

I have the Kali LP6, Adam A5x and JBL 104 but I am hearing a lot more of everything with the diy monitors. I also just built a cube monitor this weekend using the Dayton Audio RS100p because of the recommendation by KMA for the 3 way. Made an Auratone clone. No bass but your getting everything else, fantastic little speaker. Made a pair and I ended up listening to music for hours.

Kirby, thanks for the lead-off. :)
I've been at the speaker game for a long time, first using whatever I could find in discarded radios etc back in the early to mid 70's, to my first real build at age 14 (late 70's). Been fiddling with and making ever since, to one degree or another. Now that the kids are all grown and I have more time (what's that??), I've dived back in. You can find me over on Nick's forum (123TOID), where I do what I can to help get others started in the hobby. I want those getting into it to have a good understanding of how, what, and why, as it makes it more clear as to why you would make one decision over another. That was the impetus behind my question.
DIYAV is a really good and strong community with a wide knowledge base that can answer just about anything you throw at it.
The LSDC is one I've read, but never owned. I took what I could out of it and added it to one or more of the QBASIC programs I've written over the years (and still use today).
If you want to see some books I've owned and used, check them out here: toidsdiyaudio.com/community/the-lounge/reference-books-ive-used/
One of the best electronics and theory sites I've come across is ESP, Elliot Sound Products. His loudspeaker pages can be found here: sound-au.com/articles.htm#loud and I highly recommend perusing his whole site.
    www.linkwitzlab.com/ is another great resource.
I have many more at home, but with your reco's and these, there are way more than enough for any aspiring designer to get started.
Hope you and the fam are doing well. All the best to you, Jen and Lincoln.

@@KirbyMeetsAudio I've modded speakers for over 20 years now. Started in the 90's when a dealer from NY modded some Ar (magic) ones with a mylar bypass cap. The modded speaker sounded 80% bigger, and cleaner than factory. Since then, I've used medium and costly drivers and made some fantastic sounding DIY speakers. I even re-built polk audio (79-87) with 1% crossover parts. Everyone, including non-audiophiles could hear the difference. Yet, I had to block a guy that tried to say science was not on my side (and the know-nothing posted a source about amp STORAGE caps, not crossover caps). Another since blocked individual said that I had to do a frequency sweep of the crossover and test in an anechoic chamber with FFT analysis. Uh...no. VMPS (RIP) for example never got measured during development. Only after the fact in magazines. Won "Best in show" several times. Won critical praise from listener magazine and others. Essentially,. ear-tuned speakers that blew away stuff like wilson for 1/7th the cost. So much for the myth of R&D.

  • @Flowxing

Making a speaker out of car-hifi components is not that simple. Your biggest problem will be that you dont have your frequency response charts and TS parameters - which means youre just guessing. The other problem is the crossover - this is where all of these car systems cheap out on, apart from the fact theyre designed for car doors and not enclosures. I have heard some decent sounding open baffle designs using cheap car speakers tho.

Question: I am considering build a pair of high end tower in the 1k-1.5k range, would dsp without a crossover be easier for a first time builder? And will room specific dsp tune be the only downside of that setup? Thanks!

    • @noncog1
      @noncog1 2 года назад

A dsp with fir filters and phase correction is the best option available, and the on the fly nature of dsp eq tuning lends itself learning, and also the huge increase in capability allows you to get closer to perfection this is assuming a good enough dsp tho. I recommend minidsp products with diraclive software for those who can afford it, and unlike a passive crossover, dsps can easily adapt to a new room without any parts changing

It's "flat frequency RESPONSE", not "flat frequency" :-). Most good DIY designs I've seen incorporate a smooth near-flat on-axis frequency response and a smooth frequency response rolloff off-axis, as they fit most needs. Designing a speaker for particular music to make it sound good is like designing car seats in a taxi for only fat people or thin people - better hope that's the only kind of people you might be carrying in that taxi :-).
Concerning car audio speakers, if you want to use them in a DIY build, just use them like you'd use any other driver - MEASURE the t/s parameters (which can differ, sometimes significantly so, from any published values), impedance curve and frequency response, and use that information accordingly to design your box size, tuning and x-over points. I also like to do FR tests at various voltage levels to examine the THD, which in turn helps in choosing the best filter frequencies and slopes. One of the biggest issues with using car audio drivers for me is, usually they're not physically designed to be mounted on or in a box (particularly the tweeters in component systems).

CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO??? The answer 90 percent of the time is a yes and it is all because of one term. . . . COLORED SOUND , If you were to perform the same test, on a non colored flat mic, thru a non colored flat amp, and thru non colored, flat, properly designed speakers with the speakers set to equal gain of the singers voice. The answer would be NO, you would not be able to tell the difference between the speaker and the voice. . .. . . . . in regards to your statement about equalizers , equalizers original intended purpose was to """"equalize""" aka to make flat the speakers that were not flat. . . or in other words take the color out of the speaker. . . "" since most speakers have widely varing frequency response. .. . SORRY FOR MY RANT. . I just LOVE true, accurate, and lifelike sound,!!!!

Wrong, the purpose of an equalizer is to adjust the sound to your taste. The room shoe, finishes, furniture all impact sound, do often a flat speaker frequency response sounds like shit. Nothing wrong with adjusting. After all your listening to what the original sound engineer, recording equipment coloring, microphone coloring, microphone placement,. So stating music or a recording is pure is 100% bullshit.

Hey Mike! I appreciate your conviction, but have you spent much time in a recording studio? I understand why you would think you want the exact vocal coming out of the performer to come out of your speakers at home, but that’s just never the case. None of the recordings you’ve ever listened to is the singers voice going straight from a flat microphone to tape. Every vocal, acoustic guitar, drum set, piano, ext.. gets some level of processing, including eq, to make the instrument sound better in the mix. Even live sound gets processed.
The goal of recording engineers and speaker designers is to make the music sound the best it possibly can, whatever “best” is to that particular person. Maybe sometimes that means straight to tape with no “color”, but that is certainly the rare exception, not the rule.
Thanks for watching and commenting! 🙏

@@airgliderz first i should start with this excerpt from a simple google search:
"""""The term equalizer (EQ) has its origins in early telephone engineering, when high frequency losses over long distances had to be corrected so that the spectrum of the sound at the receiver matched the sound spectrum that was initially transmitted. -All About Audio Equalization: Solutions and Frontiers - MDPI""""" . These not my words, its but pretty self explanatory in the word the equalize its self , which according to oxford dictionary means ""to make uniform in application or effect; make the same in quantity, size, or degree throughout a place or group.;become equal to a specified or standard level.""""
SMH, The last time i checked the word equalize did not mean the antonym to word equalize aka un-equalize aka to not make the same through out. .. . however your right though of one of the purposes , the equalizer is to ""EQUALIZE ANOMALIES IN THE SOUND such as differences in driver sensitivities, space plane loading, CV horns, tuning frequencies/resonances of the box and many others the original purpose and main point is to equalize the sound to the original signal source. [this would be different from tone controls] unfortunately the definition of the word equalize seems to be lost to average/modern audio guy and now usual translates to the word smiley face. . .[if you dont know what that means look up smiley face eq]
also you must of not read what i said well, but I'll clarify , what i said is if all the variables were controlled and every thing in the signal chain was truly flat, as well the speaker and environment [including phase smearing, delay issues and all potential coloration issues] if all these things were flat, you would not be able to tell the difference between real life and a recording. . . now to my point:, as you pointed every thing is colored or aka altered, aka adulterated, to one degree, or another, by each item in the single chain, WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU PURPOSELY WANT TO ALTER THE MOST IMPORTANT COMPONENTS AND THE ONLY PART YOU HAVE CONTROL OVER. . . THE AMP THE , THE EQ AND THE SPEAKERS. . .. . SMH If you can keep your part of the signal chain as PURE AS POSSIBLE TO THE ORIGINAL you will here things you never heard before, and get to enjoy audio in a way that very very few people ever heard except the audio engineers them self or those few who are blessed enough to have reference grade audio equipment. . .. . . hopefully my essay helped to understand what i was getting at. . . if not or if you just dont care, enjoy your smiley face :) eq have a nice day :)

@@KirbyMeetsAudio lol actually i own a small recording studio as well as being a dj my whole life [ my dad was a dj, so ive been around pro audio equipment since i was born and was his audio rhodie from a very young age ] , I started Djing on Technics 1200's around 10 years old and started producing music when i 16 and am now 34 years old]. .. . ., also i take pride and joy of diligently making sure all my speakers i own are flat as can be . . lol in all reality the only speakers I own that are not flat are my tv, laptop and car. . . everything else is flat as can be [6 reference studio grade dj speakers, 2 studio monitors, and 4 IEM's] I've have spent almost 15 years training my ears to learn and identify flat sound, to the point where when hear colored sound it bothers me. . . lol aka car radios, bluetooth speakers, tvs, laptop, sound bars and all the other crap audio products available today. . . IT sounds like nails on a chalk board to me, but this is also beneficial as i can also go to any relatively capable sound system and tune it with a good 16 preferably 32 band eq and get it sound "almost" good as some flat studio monitors[minus phase smear issues] . . . I guess my point in everything I said , why would anyone want anything but pure un adulterated sound that is as close the original source as possible with in your control] When you get to hear it like this it BLOW YOUR MIND!!!! . . . as a side note some of the most famous studio monitors are not flat such as the famous Yamaha NS10's and actually sound horrible [the idea is if you can make sound good on this it will sound good on anything] I think this is what gives some people a bad taste about studio monitors, since some of the famous models actually dont sound good. . . however the best sounding ones are truly flat such as the Mackie Mackie HR824 and the now cheap, great, and famous JBL LSR305/LSR308 . . . one other side note: in your studio monitor build you mentioned making a budget studio monitor I'd love to see that also my request and challenge to you is could you make them cheaper or better for the same price as the now famous jbl LSR'S. . . . . I'd love to see if its possible to make studio monitors that are more affordable than these. . .[ you can pick a used pair on guirtar center for about 89 a speaker I'd love for you to buy a pair and get your opinion as to how it compares to your line or even better the mackies [ Either way I love your videos and have a great day]

@@mikeriverajr4447 interesting bu does not matter. Again no such thing as in uncolored recording, again, the microphones, recording equipment, your sound system and your room, your recorplayer/digital lass less bull crap recordings all color the sound you here. Again an equalizer adjust the sound to your listening preference which may include adjusting sound using a "calibrated" microphone adjust, color, the sound to a meh sounding flat frequency response in a specific 3 dimensionally defined Pont. "reference system" LOL an oxymoron. Reference to what located in a non reference undefined room. LOL.
