3 Days Solo Hiking and Wildcamping across Dartmoor: The Abbots Way
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 12 сен 2024
- A few months ago I decided to hike the Abbots Way across Dartmoor. This route is 22 miles, and passes various tors, towns, stone crosses, and with a little detour, you can visit some magnificent stone rows. I decided to yoyo the route, hiking Buckfast Abbey to Tavistock and back again, wildcamping along the way, totalling 44 miles (although if you watch can see why this may have been less). The story of the route is a fascinating one, so please click the link below to read about it in more detail if you're also interested in tales like this.

Achingly beautiful, my Grandad explained the Nun's Cross; so happy that you appreciate the beautiful wild Countryside 😘
Great vid Becca🤘 We all get spooked by unfamiliar things from time to time - like the time a huge scary animal was growling right outside my tent. It was a hedgehog 🤣
Haha that's hillarious, we've all been there 🤣
Adding this to 2023s hit list, looks like a quality weekender!
And speaking of quality, this is my first experience of the muddy-youtube, and instantly up there in the top 5!
Fantastic video, love the adventure and nature shots. Keep up the great hikes!
beautiful video! enjoyed it alot. Such a positive attitude. amazing
Looks like a great adventure! Good to see people out enjoying all that Dartmoor has to offer!
Thanks guys xx
*_I always salute female adventurers, especially when they have the courage to go on an adventure alone, solo hiking or solo camping. I wish Success to you Mrs Muddy. You are very beautiful..., especially your eyes and eyelashes... Greetings and I will faithfully wait and watch your next video_*
Respect🙌🙌 None of us can live a full life wrapped in cotton wool. Risk taking & appreciating the natural world is key to a good life.
Great vid and deffo have been spooked by overnight camps due to a combination of imagination and unfamiliar nature sounds ...Thanks Muddy!
Yeah, it doesn't take much huh?! ❤️
What a delightful adventure! Thank you for letting us join you. Your enthusiasm is just gorgeous - so uplifting to watch.
hi i did the abbots way walk in 1965 when i was 13 your video bought everything back
Awww it's a gorgeous walk x
For blisters, you need zinc oxide tape. It's antibacterial, sticks really well and doesn't stretch so it protects any hot spots or existing blisters.
Be careful not to restrict the movement of any joints or you'll get issues.
had a notification of this video. made a note of the stone rows and a few tors. makes me want to go back to Dartmoor again. Teignhead farm is a nice place to visit where you can park at the visitor centre and pay for multi days in the visitors centre. And walk from there. I have wildcamped there . a beautiful brook for water. I tend to use a paid campsite and hike when I can in Dartmoor to bag some tors. as soon as my ankle heals completely hopefully by March I will hike again in Dartmoor. take care and thank you so much for a great video.
The jelly is where a heron or something ate a frog. It's the slime that would have gone round the frogspawn in a better world. It was a total mystery for a long, long time.
Nice video, I like your style.
I've just stumbled across your Channel. Easy to watch and easy on the eye. Lovely smile!
Awww thanks lovely
Every drinking Scotsman knows of Buckfast Abbey the home of the Buckie! There's even tours. Foot care in very important ask any infantry squaddie. That water looks better than some I've used, always boil. Happy trails.
Damp problems with the tent? I would...
(1) Clean it and perhaps hand wash it first (wash any mud off) using Star Drops liquid detergent (does NOT contain any bleach like washing up liquid does).
(2) Rinse detergent off.
(3) Let it drip dry on a line thoroughly.
(4) Apply FabSil waterproofing using a hand spray, air drying outside in a washing line. Only do this if the groundsheet part of the tent does not have a plasticised coating as FabSil contains a solvent which dissolves certain plastics! I have used it on Nylon successfully, but is brilliant on cotton canvas materials also.
(5) Always carry a small groundsheet, or tarp, as a backup.
I'm a new subscriber to your channel, it came up as a suggestion on my feed, I'm glad it did. As a Devonian that spent so much time on the moors, I love these videos. As a latecomer to your channel I now have the luxury and privilege of watching all of your back catalogue of videos. Thanks for all your uploads.
Just found your channel good on you girl never worth staying in a job you hate I live in the middle of exmoor so love exploring great vid enjoyed it 😊👌
Last time I was on Dartmoor was 35 years ago during Royal Navy basic training. Never thought I'd go back to that place of pain again. However, you and a few others have convinced me to buy a tent and have a wander. I'll wait until we have some decent weather next year but I'm wondering if I'll find the pond/lake that Lt Thompson made me swim across naked in November '88!
Oh man dartmoor can be brutal, but also freaking amazing. So glad you're giving it a second chance x
Nice video. I hate those boggy, baby's head clumpy bits. You could be 5 meters from a path and not even see it. Watching this does make me want to down tools and just disappear back up onto the moor. I was only there 3 days ago for the Cornwood march and i already miss it.
Lovely new channel. Looking forward to more videos. I used to video journal my pilgrimages to holy wells in Cornwall a few years back, (had a couple of channels, can't remember the passwords now). Was always concerned about safety when camping, but, just makes you more stealthier. Never told anyone where I was going, only where I had been. Stay safe, stay beautiful. Wished I'd had the confidence to speak to the camera like you do.
Found myself smiling throughout this vid. Even laughed out loud a couple of times. Well done.....
Awww thank you x
Thanks for the film. Was really good to see the Abbots Way featured.
Awww thank you
@@muddy_bootlaces Welcome. Look forward to more Dartmoor films

Awww thanks buddy, yeah there's a proper intense story behind that route!!
Interesting lore. A bit unusual for you. I liked it.
Your great knowledge and wild camping are very encouraging for me to get out camping and hiking myself.💖🙏
Thank you, Becca, l really enjoy this type of content.
Personal thoughts and feelings, lows as well as highs, historical story time, meal and snack information . . .
(l eat tortillas on trail too - peanut butter and banana with one portion of peanut butter left in the plastic pot for cold soak porridge the next day, then the plastic pot kept for couscous and cupasoup, etc. etc.)
Great video bird ,amazing smile
Keep up it up and let's have more pasty shots☺☺☺☺
Pastyyyyyys 🎉
Fantastic video...your such a natural infront of the camera .....amazing walk one I'd love to do x
Awww thank you x
Ah nothing like the freedom of being on the high moors, those moments of fading light upon the brooks and hills is my favourite time, does the soul good to see such stunning wild beauty. Also, the jelly stuff you saw is often called star jelly though it remains a fairly mysterious organism, think legendary Dartmoor did an article on it if you want some more info, I've heard people say its a type of fungi, algae, slime mould, but more probably is it regurgitated frogs/toads spawn or similar. In folklore it is also referred to as astral jelly as it was believed to have been deposited during meteor showers.
Sorry me luv was just googleing and researching atlburg warrior aqua boots to replace my battered scarpa ranger GTX 2's which I've just purchased for wet woodland camps and hopefully summer ones too thought fuck it new boots new year so missed the notification watching it now you beautiful lot 😂😂😂😂😀👍 hope you have a wonderful year Beks 😀👍❤
Hahaha mate it's only been up about half an hour anyway as I struggled with the technology. RUclips is so much harder than instagram 🤣🤣 did you get the scarpas in the end?
@@muddy_bootlaces oh bugger that's me grammer no replacing the old dog scarpers which were ace by the way for the altbergs 😀👍❤
Beca you are such a beautiful soul, the world is a better place because of you 😊 happy new year 😊 may you be blessed with the very best that life has to offer 🙏🙏 God bless you mate👍 regards Colin 😊😊

Happy new year dude 🤙
Happy New Year and great video and really cool story about the Monks.
Awww thanks lovely, I really like these hikes that have a bit of a back story!!
Lovely walk, thanks for sharing, Beca 🍂
It looks like Dartmoor seriously needs more basic, natural, slab bridges.
"Get on Girl" brilliant 👏
Great watch mate. Just to put your mind at rest, that weird poo right next to your tent was probably... me! 😄👍
🤣🤣🤣🤣
That was great - your enthusiasm is totally epic! I've not managed to get out anywhere near enough recently but watching stuff like this really inspires me. I love that not much phases you, the rain, the bogs, the wet tent, the knackered food and even the unease of the last night was really from other folks insecurities. And the joy of having a pastie and a bottle of Luscombe at the end was palpable! Looking forward to the next one, all the very best, Andy
Awww thanks buddy! I guess I'm so used to little mishaps, it's just part of who I am now 😂 you appreciate the good things even more when stuff goes wrong anyway, right?! 😂 Happy new year lovely x
@@muddy_bootlaces Absolutely haha! Happy new year mate x

Great adventure and a fantastic video of it! The scenery out there looks wonderful. Congrats on quitting the job, always leave toxic envoirements they will make you sick ;)
Awww thanks lovely, I'm so happy I got out!!! 🤙
Weirdly I sometimes get freaked out in cloughs in the Peak District. It's a kind of claustrophobia maybe. Much happier on a high exposed summit! And cows can bugger right off, am with you on that.
Yeah it's odd isn't it... Almost that trapped feeling. Glad I'm not the only one with cows haha
Hello 👋, I just found your channel, I love it, I'm going to look for more 😊, I used to love Dartmoor & spent many hours up there, there's so much to see & find out about. Make the most of what you have while you still have it. I think one of my favourite 's on the Moor is the corbells but there's so much more to see.
Really enjoyed the video, just found your channel and subscribed ❤
Happy new year 🎉, great to see another video. I love the abbots way it’s very interesting and the information you gave at the start was great. The white jelly is called star jelly I believe it is regurgitated frog spawn. Folklore and what I always thought it was from meteor showers. On my daily walks I always see it on the moors.
Keep up the great work and I look forward to see more.
From Dartmoor 👍🏻🏴
Ooooohhhh thanks for the info, love that idea about the meteorites!! Although the frog spawn sounds more likely lol. Thanks so much 🤙
Wot a great video, loved every sec. More great content like this please !! Happy new year Beca.
Happy new year!! Cheers buddy 🤙
Absolutely great video. I'm so happy you started making these videos. Love your enthusiasm and your energy level is always thru the roof. Those were some magnificent views. Keep the videos coming. Looking forward to the next one. Take care and stay safe.
Oh you sweetheart! Thank you I was one very happy lass that weekend!
Lots of people doing this kind of thing here. Yours felt different ( in a good way 😊). You’re a natural in front of the camera. Looking forward to following your future adventures in this new year.

Happy new year Becka! Being near people makes me nervous, love how wild dartmoor feels though, you can proper get away from folk. Congrats for getting out of the job! Me too, never felt better 😁
Ahhh thanks lovely!!! X
Have you ever thought about walking with Gaiters on? Really good for stopping water going into the top of your boots.
Yeah, I've struggled with gathers though I'm really short, so most don't fit right... I'll keep looking though

The gel stuff that you asked about on the track is the absorbent material (sodium polyacrylate) from a discarded disposable nappy 👶
Nooo that's so bad 😮😮
