  • A few months ago I decided to hike the Abbots Way across Dartmoor. This route is 22 miles, and passes various tors, towns, stone crosses, and with a little detour, you can visit some magnificent stone rows. I decided to yoyo the route, hiking Buckfast Abbey to Tavistock and back again, wildcamping along the way, totalling 44 miles (although if you watch can see why this may have been less). The story of the route is a fascinating one, so please click the link below to read about it in more detail if you're also interested in tales like this.

For blisters, you need zinc oxide tape. It's antibacterial, sticks really well and doesn't stretch so it protects any hot spots or existing blisters.
Be careful not to restrict the movement of any joints or you'll get issues.

had a notification of this video. made a note of the stone rows and a few tors. makes me want to go back to Dartmoor again. Teignhead farm is a nice place to visit where you can park at the visitor centre and pay for multi days in the visitors centre. And walk from there. I have wildcamped there . a beautiful brook for water. I tend to use a paid campsite and hike when I can in Dartmoor to bag some tors. as soon as my ankle heals completely hopefully by March I will hike again in Dartmoor. take care and thank you so much for a great video.

The jelly is where a heron or something ate a frog. It's the slime that would have gone round the frogspawn in a better world. It was a total mystery for a long, long time.

Every drinking Scotsman knows of Buckfast Abbey the home of the Buckie! There's even tours. Foot care in very important ask any infantry squaddie. That water looks better than some I've used, always boil. Happy trails.

Damp problems with the tent? I would...
    (1) Clean it and perhaps hand wash it first (wash any mud off) using Star Drops liquid detergent (does NOT contain any bleach like washing up liquid does).
    (2) Rinse detergent off.
    (3) Let it drip dry on a line thoroughly.
    (4) Apply FabSil waterproofing using a hand spray, air drying outside in a washing line. Only do this if the groundsheet part of the tent does not have a plasticised coating as FabSil contains a solvent which dissolves certain plastics! I have used it on Nylon successfully, but is brilliant on cotton canvas materials also.
    (5) Always carry a small groundsheet, or tarp, as a backup.

Last time I was on Dartmoor was 35 years ago during Royal Navy basic training. Never thought I'd go back to that place of pain again. However, you and a few others have convinced me to buy a tent and have a wander. I'll wait until we have some decent weather next year but I'm wondering if I'll find the pond/lake that Lt Thompson made me swim across naked in November '88!

Nice video. I hate those boggy, baby's head clumpy bits. You could be 5 meters from a path and not even see it. Watching this does make me want to down tools and just disappear back up onto the moor. I was only there 3 days ago for the Cornwood march and i already miss it.

Lovely new channel. Looking forward to more videos. I used to video journal my pilgrimages to holy wells in Cornwall a few years back, (had a couple of channels, can't remember the passwords now). Was always concerned about safety when camping, but, just makes you more stealthier. Never told anyone where I was going, only where I had been. Stay safe, stay beautiful. Wished I'd had the confidence to speak to the camera like you do.

Ah nothing like the freedom of being on the high moors, those moments of fading light upon the brooks and hills is my favourite time, does the soul good to see such stunning wild beauty. Also, the jelly stuff you saw is often called star jelly though it remains a fairly mysterious organism, think legendary Dartmoor did an article on it if you want some more info, I've heard people say its a type of fungi, algae, slime mould, but more probably is it regurgitated frogs/toads spawn or similar. In folklore it is also referred to as astral jelly as it was believed to have been deposited during meteor showers.
