The first mistake is putting dates in your URL. I used to do this with neilpatel.com.
What a huge mistake. My URL structure used to be neilpatel.com, slash year, slash month, slash title of my blog post.
The moment I took off the dates from my URL, guess what happened to my search traffic?
Well, within 30 days, it went up by 58%. And I'm talking about hundreds and thousands of visitors from Google already each month with dates in my URL.
But the moment I removed them, I saw an additional 58% increase in my search traffic.
So, whatever URL structure you have, just make sure it does not have dates.
The reason being when you have a date in your URL Google thinks of your site as being relevant to that date.
The second mistake that you're making is you're thinking of your site as a silo.
It doesn't matter how many different sections you have or categories, it's still one site.
It's on one domain name. For example, my blog is about marketing. So, when I create content, I link to all the other marketing posts that are relevant to the post that I just released.
So when you write content, link to other pieces of content that are relevant.
That way, all of your pages are going to be interconnected and they're going to rank higher.
The third mistake that you're making, you're thinking of SEO as just SEO.
It's not just about on-page code. It's not just about building links. It's not even just about getting social shares. It's about building a brand.
Eric Schmidt, the ex-CEO of Google once said that brands are the solution.
What he's talking about is, when you're trying to figure out what sites to rank higher than others, he decided, as well as a ton of other people in Google, that if you have a brand, you should rank higher.
Why is that? Well you've heard of this thing called fake news. It's a great way to combat that.
It's not just Facebook, who's concerned about fake news. It's all of the major platforms out there.
So, building a brand does wonders for you especially when it comes to SEO. You can do things like collecting emails to get people to keep coming back to your site.
Getting all those people to keep coming back, it'll help reinforce your brand to them.
That'll help you climb in the rankings in the long run.
The fourth mistake is just writing content.
I know you're thinking, oh Neil, content's king. How's that a mistake?
No, writing content isn't a mistake.
It's writing content and then not updating it, and that's what most people do.
They just write content, and they write more new content.
Then after that, they write more new content, and guess what they do after that? They write more new content.
So, if you update your content, Google's going to be like, oh wow, it's fresh.
It's hip, it's new, it's still relevant. Let's rank it higher.
With over a billion blogs out there, Google likes picking brand new, updated content versus old, outdated content.
This doesn't mean you have to rewrite the whole article.
It could just be a paragraph or two, a few lines.
It could just be reviewing the article, making sure it's still up-to-date, and you make no modifications because it's still good to go.
And the last mistake you're making, you're not thinking about the user.
Google looks at something called user metrics.
Whether it's the browser, whether it's the toolbar, Google wants to make sure people have an amazing experience.
They're using all those platforms to track how when people come to your website, how they perceive it.
And they can't talk to them by surveying them or anything like that, but what they can see is, hey did someone perform as a Google search, click on the listing, land on your site, and within a second, are they clicking the Back button?
Because if they are, it tells Google, your website, that webpage isn't relevant.
So, by putting the user first, instead of putting SEO first, it'll help you climb to the top.

How much traffic are you getting per month from Google? Leave a comment below with the number.
I had 279 visitors from organic search in March. It may not sound like much, but this particular website is only three months and has only 8 articles published. The cool thing is that it is already making sales via amazon affiliate, so it looks like I am in the right direction. My goal is to keep growing it over the next year or so and sell it for at least $100k by the end of 2020.

Hi Neil, May I ask
Is good to create both (page and blog) for a single post?
A post only needs to be added once.
THANKS
@@neilpatel
Wordpress is filled with dates lately I've been teaching myself how to edit wordpress so that I can customize it where its reading dates or default file paths with numbers in them. Ive been working a small program that can automate this for me. But once again a great tutorial filled with valuable information. Since I've been watching these videos I have a better understanding of SEO. Thanks again.
You're welcome, James!
those of us on blogger platform can't do anything about dates, but since google owns blogger(i think) does this still affect us?
I recommend using Wordpress over Blogger.
How did you avoid 404's when you took dates out of URLs- did you redirect? Doesn't having lots of redirects hurt?
I 301 redirected all of them
Yes, We should avoid basic SEO optimization mistakes for good traffic & rankings.
Definitely
Hey Neil thank you for sharing another amazing tips with us.
No I didn’t get any traffic because I turn off robot.txt
in Five number tips you said about User Experience (UX). so are we have to change our UX or make it more User Friendly?
The more user friendly the site the better.
@@neilpatel Thanks for reply. I'll keep it on mind.
Question regarding content: Is there any difference between posting content on my blog and posting in my medium or linkedin account? Thanks.
You own your blog and can control what you do with the traffic.
When I update a blog post, is better to update also the published date (for example in WordPress change the article date from 2017 to 2018) such as the article is just published or mantain the old date, updating only the content?
You don't need to update the publish date. Google's crawler will know you made an update.
Hi Neil, how to show the last updated date on Google SERP? What's your opinion on showing the date on Google SERP? And is it affect ranking or not?
I prefer not adding dates as it is better for ranking evergreen content ;)
Neil,
Does site hosting migration can affect the traffic of the website like I planning to move from shared hosting to cloud hosting, does it can decrease the traffic?
It shouldn't
Hey Neil! If i drive traffic through social media on my any 1 post, is that post ranking in google will increase or remain the same??
It can help. There are 200 different factors that Google considers when ranking content.
I love your content! do you have any training course? keep it up!
Thanks, Brandon! I don't have any courses available but you can definitely learn a lot for free here on the channel and on my blog ;)
Hi @neil , I have this question that I found many people debating it.
Is it good for SEO to republish the exact blog posts on Medium?
Thanks for your great insights much appreciated.
It could help indirectly for driving traffic, awareness, potential social shares, links, etc.
@@neilpatel So it won't be recognized as a duplicate content? That's my concern.
I am using the sate structure and now wondering if its a good idea to change it after 2 year.s i see a warning that "Changing your permalinks settings can seriously impact your search engine visibility. It should almost never be done on a live website." and also "Updating your URL or permalink structure will reset the social share counts for your pages. Upgrade Shareaholic to enable Share Count Recovery." what do you suggest?
Yes, the redirect will make you lose the share count numbers visible on your page but it will help your traffic and rankings. I lost the visible number of shares but I was okay with that because I prefer the long-term benefits of increased rankings.
Hey Neil, quick question. Long articles and top x lists. Would you recommend splitting them to reduce the bounce rates and increase the overall page views or would you keep it on 1 page? I noticed you don't split articles in to multiple pages but on one of my previous projects a few years back this helped tremendously so I'm just curious if that is still relevant or not. Thanks!
I am against that as it is terrible for the user experience
@@neilpatel Thanks! Yeah I had some complaints on Reddit where my content has been posted. They complained about the multiple page thing. I'll move it all to 1 page as you suggest.
Does this mean removing the date published on your blogs as well? Sorry to ask.
Testing with hiding the dates can be interesting! See how it affects your SEO.
Neil,
I'll be writing 1 blog post per week but it will be value added and more in detail compared to others, is it good in any competitive niche, does Google will rank my website If publishing few posts per month? but it will be including videos, detailed information, (if required) GIF's, infographics
If the content is high quality then it’s definitely possible it will rank
I've gotten to page 2 on many different Google searches pertinent to my specialty. So I think a fair amount of money. But in about 4 more months, once Google realizes how bomb my site is, I'll be bumped forward to page 1.
Great topics BTW :-)
Mistakes #2 & #5 really hit home
Thanks!
I work with a medical practice with several locations. How do I find which keywords I'm currently ranking for in near one of those offices? The website is for all locations and SEMRush is only showing me the national rankings, but I'm trying to find the rankings for a specific zip code so that I can get a better understanding before I start suggesting keywords for PPC to promote this one specific location. Any suggestions? --- PS: Love your videos!
I think the best way to do that is to have people in those locations do searches manually. This way, you will get the most accurate results.
I am getting 13 times increment in my traffic.
Yesterday i got 1 visitor (not from google)
Today i got 13 visitors.
😭
your website plz ????
Keep working at it!
😂😂😂😂😂
LOL that's 13 more than me!
@@mosiarmstrong9374 same
The first focused should be on the audience value addition, growth and knowledge too then automatically Google will prefer your blog for the search results.
Hit like if any agree
Agreed ;)
May seem like a silly question, but what do you mean by what you said? Would you be able to explain further?
Hi Neil, do you have some video about content cluster or SILO structure to improve internal links and relevancy?
Check out my second tip in this video ;)
Nice tips sir
Thanks!
Neil, would you also remove dates from urls for news sites?
Typically, news sites aren't generating evergreen content to drive organic visitors over time.
Neil Patel In this particular case, I recently started working with an online aviation news publisher that has dates in their URLs. I thought about changing the url structure and redirecting the old urls but I had decided against it. What I’m gathering is you’d probably leave the url structure alone in this case.
@@neilpatel how to remove dates from url?
@@shashankreviews2115 go to permalinks in your wordpress settings.
Change the format there
How to change Permalinks? Any easy way to do it without messing blog?
You can use 301 redirects
Hi Respected Neil Patel
,
Can you tell me about social shares? Social shares are good for ranking?
They are one piece of the puzzle ;)
@@neilpatel Thanks .... You are good :)
10,000+ Sir
Love learning from someone who knows his stuff!
Thanks!
Neil,
Is there any problem if we embed 4-5 relevant videos on the blog post, I mean it shouldn't hurt the traffic on the website? What're your views?
Don’t overdo it. I usually add just one per post.
Hello Neil I watched this video and then went to my settings. I changed from the one reflecting the dates to one that just gives the name. The problem is , it changes all the existing posts so that they then become "oops Cant seem to find that page" on Google search. So the question is, how do I set it up correctly for all new posts?
You need to add 301 redirects to those ones so they point to the versions without the dates.
Not more than 1k....
Help
Hi Neil, regarding "Remove dates from URL," can you tell us how to do this on blogspot plateform? One way I know that you need to add a particular code in edit html section, but won't that affect the post from SEO point of view and google webmasters, sitemap?
I am not familiar with blogspot’s backend so you’ll need to check in their forums to see how it’s done
@@neilpatel Thanks for the response.
I have a question. When I removed the dates from my url, my pages stopped being indexed by Google. Any idea what I should do?
You need to 301 redirect the old URLs to the new ones
Lovely
Thank you!
Short question about updating content: do you also update the publishing date of your blog if you update your content?
You don't need to update the date
Awesome
Thanks!
Sorry for my Noob question. what do you mean by update content? adding more contents to a post or changing some parts of a blog post?
If you have written a content today on you website on some topic and after few days or months you found something new on the same topic, then edit your post you can add those info or can rewrite your blog post with updated information.
What Amit said. Also, replace broken links, update dates and stats, etc
Your logical mind is really awesome
Thanks!
How to remove year and month from URL when we are at blogger?
Here's a Quora link I found that answers your question. www.quora.com/How-do-I-remove-the-date-from-blogger-post-links
Really nice tips and contents, thanks for your sharing.
About Tip 1, you suggest that don't put the date in the URL structure. But google's Blogger uses this way to make the URL.
Is that mean Blogger from Google which is not friendly to their own search engine?
Thanks again. I really love your content. Give me a lot of concept and info of marketing : )
I think the date structure has a valid effect on the blog. But for the homepage, it is not a good choice.
I recommend using Wordpress.
Hey Neil do you have a video on web pages and design? You talk about having an experience can you help us create a website that can give an amazing experience?
I don't think I have videos but I know for sure there are a some articles on my blog about design :)

What do u know about cornerstone content?
I have heard people talking about it. I prefer to focus on just creating amazing content on my blog... that has always driven the best results. I try not to focus on the cornerstone, pillar, silo names... just quality content that helps my readers.
