You had a thumbs up the moment you said, no one is forcing you to use the stage manager function. Personally I am looking forward to having it available. I know that some will never have a use for it but for the people that have a need this is a welcome addition.

Thanks for researching it and coming in with a useful summary, not like most of the YT creators that rushed to get out a review yet were rather clueless on how it worked and that it was developer beta 1! Anyway some of these have come back with a subsequent video to add and correct mistakes they made and that way people get a true understanding, not a biased ill-prepared clickbait video.
I agree 100%, Stage Manager is about multitasking which is a big change to how iPads worked pre-iPadOS 16. Now they can have up to eight apps running in the foreground rather than three. This means active, not sleeping, so that is why RAM is the determinator as to whether this can be done on older devices. So for those, like me, with a 4GB 2018 Pro must accept that if I was running eight apps using over 4GB of RAM that it is impossible for Stage Manager to work as designed. Apps will be put to sleep (compressed) but eventually jetsam and we end up with angry users that have lost their work when the RAM ran out. Very few creators have highlighted this, and especially when comments are completely getting the wrong end of the stick by saying the A12X/Z can handle it? Yes they can, though not as smoothly or as well as the M1, but they could not handle the 8 apps if they were pro apps which everyone says why they buy the iPad Pro’s, that we’re geared to max out the 16GB available.
Hopefully some sort of second display option can be added but that creates even more issues as Thunderbolt on the M1 can handle 6K whereas USB-C cannot. So Stage Manager is def an M-chip option and though my iPad Pro 2018 would love to have it I understand that 16GB of RAM usage can never go into 4GB so it just isn’t coming for me.

I don’t understand why this feature would not be welcomed with open arms. I’m not a power user by no means, but I use my iPad as my main machine for 95% of what I do daily and I personally can’t wait for Stage Manager. I am fortunate that I upgraded my 1st Gen iPad Pro last year to a M1 11” and I have been nothing less than satisfied since my purchase. I can’t wait to see how many new things can be developed for this current gen hardware.

Probably people expecting too much including myself. Not gonna lie when i first saw it announced i thought we would get the desktop ui that i always hoping for, just like other tablets like Surface Pro or Galaxy tabs with the Dex mode. It's been great that ipad has mouse & keyboard support but the ui as of right now i don't found it to be natural using it, so i thought the stage manager gonna be the ui changer to fit the mouse n keyboard.
The most welcome feature of this is the full support of external monitor for different aspect ratio, but i think it's very basic and non m1 ipads should get this support too even without the stage manager. It shouldn't be that hard i mean samsung can make it's phones (even the weaker chip) to support this, no wonder that peoples mad about this.
But if we see it on the apple's perspective i kinda get it. They won't go full desktop ui since it's potentially hurt the macbooks sales. They limit to m1 devices only because they want to persuade people to upgrade their ipads.

Thanks for bringing some sanity to this whole discussion. Last year everyone was complaining that the M1 iPad was overpowered and did not take advantage of the M1 processor. Apple delivers on that feedback. Now everyone is complaining that SM is not supported on legacy processors. You can’t have it both ways! Also your points on beta software is spot on. You cannot make a final judgement on software released on day one of beta one!

@UC-som9I8kKY5zqkt_4APtyw How do you know that? You do not have access to any internal testing done by Apple! Or any testing done by anyone for that matter. Non M1 IPad’s have less memory, slower SSD’s (which would slow down memory swapping), less powerful graphics and slower USB C (and no thunderbolt). Fact is, no one will really know.

Stage manager isnt anywhere near taxing enough to make M1 mandatory when samsung can make its phones run Dex mode with weaker hardware.
This move is just to drive up M1 iPad sales as something only M1 can do, when in fact what people want is to run some version of MacOS on M1 iPad.

I'm so happy that I upgraded to the M1 12.9" iPad Pro when I did. I'm very excited for Stage Manager when iPadOS 16 launches. And it feels like my M1 iPad Pro is finally becoming worth it. Won't be upgrading it for a while especially since the M1 is already overkill and if all the M2 is offering is a speed bump (that won't really be seen on already streamlined iPadOS) and MagSafe charging, I think I'll wait until there's an actual killer feature before I upgrade my iPad again.

Finally someone to speak out my thoughts. More options are always great and last year everybody cried that the M1 doesn‘t make sense because there are no extra features which use the power of it. Now when Stage Manager is restricted to M1, everybody cry because lower-end iPad didn‘t get the feature.

  • @HoneyPastry

I love the way you put all this: No one is forcing you to use it. Just because one person sees no need for it, doesn't make it useless. Options are a beautiful thing, and they are always welcome in my book, as long as those options are simply presented and easy to switch between (which Apple does wonderfully here). I use my iPad for about 90% of my work (illustration). Knowing that I can soon be able to use all these multi-tasking features (stage manager, dual-screen compatibility) on the same device makes me so happy.

You can’t say “isn’t it great how SM is an optional thing that gives people more choices!” And then later on say “well you really don’t want a sub par performance SM do you.”
I’m sorry I thought customer choice and freedom is important?
I also type all this from my M1 iPad Pro so this isn’t just me ranting for myself; I genuinely feel awful for those that only got an iPad two years ago that can’t get access to ANY version of SM.

So glad to hear more about Stage Manager--user of split screen, multiple slide overs since its been available and this gives me more options. Changes in life means I no longer use a large monitor nor use my Macbook Pro much. My M1 12.9 Pro is my main computer now (it is my third 12.9-hadn't planned to buy the M1 but.....and I've had an Ipad since 2 weeks after the first was introduced--even though at that time I was still using a custom Windows machine with a large Wacom graphics tablet). And--the big thing is--you don't have to use it if you don't want to--most don't even use split screen or slideover I have a feeling.

But seriously, I try to use Stage Manager. I really like the idea of plugging my personal iPad Pro into my external LG display sitting next to my work MacBook Pro and letting universal control to slide my iPad’s mouse over to my MacBook Pro when I need to do something over there. Really slick - when it works. Stage Manager’s strip is SO inconsistent. And I need to count on TWO HANDS the number of times that my iPad has restarted when using stage manager and external display in the past 30 minutes. I’m not really pushing anything right now - Safari, Messages, Apple Music, simple stuff - and it crashes. One day maybe.

One question - if I'm using an UW monitor, what does the external display look like? A weird, stretched out version of the "Stage"? Black bars on the side?

I agree 1000% with everything you said in this video. I have the 11” M1 pro, and i guess if I had 4 windows side by side that would be a bit to small to work with. Also if i had an iPad without the M1 chip like my partners 11”pro2018, i think i would not want a LITE version of stage manager. (I know i have the M1, so what does it matter!) still I think Apple are making the right move by only offering it to M1 iPads for the best experience. Looking forward to iPadOS 16 more than ios 16. This year i have decided to not beta test on my iPad, as i want to wait until it is finally ready. More suspense i guess.

Omg! thank you for this!!! I don’t get why so many people are crapping all over it. To me it seems perfect and better than expected way to manage windows. I feel some people had a specific thing in mind of what they were hoping apple would release and this is just different so they are being negative. I continue to support apple and most of their moves.. yea there are some mistakes nobody is perfect but I’m glad to live in a time to experience what apple has to offer and use it all in my daily routine. I have continued to try and go to windows world multiple times a year just out of curiosity, and although I am impressed with windows over the old days… and it runs great… there is just nothing that beats the mac and apple ecosystem and the user experience

I welcome the improvements in iPad OS 16, especially Stage Manager, but I am still disappointed because I don't think Apple went far enough. My M1 12.9-inch iPad Pro with 16GB RAM, 2TB storage and magic keyboard has become my daily driver. My 2019 13-inch MacBook Pro with same amounts of RAM and storage rarely get used these days, except for compiling the odd piece of iPad OS software to sideload on my iPad, run a VM or use bootcamp. In fact, I will never buy another Mac OS laptop, because I need a mobile computing device to have a touch display with pen support. Stage Manager will really help my workflow because I was recently doing some research work on my iPad Pro, and split screen, plus a slide over window and quick note didn't give me enough screen real estate, and additionally I had to use my sixth gen iPad Mini alongside my iPad Pro to give me access to the extra app I needed, and then use iCloud to keep everything synchronised. With Stage Manager the improved second monitor support will resolve most of my iPad OS multitasking requirements. Why am I disappointed? My iPad Pro is still not a standalone mobile computing device, because I need to carry around a Raspberry Pi 4 configured as a headless USB-C gadget in my iPad Pro case. The iPad powers and is the GUI for the PI 4 connecting via ethernet over a single USB-C cable, and the Pi 4 does all the things that my iPad Pro can't, such as format external drives, clone SD cards, compile C++ code, run emulators and all for a 40th of the iPad's cost. What a ludicrous position to be in when my iPad Pro has so much raw performance going spare! Many of these things Apple could fix in a heart bit, like add some Pro iPad OS upgrade options for those users with M1 iPads who want them. The question is will they, or will I eventually need to migrate away from Apple's ecosystem because I need more functionality from my iPad Pro / touch screen mobile computing device and are less concerned over how pretty and polished the end-user experience is.

Idk, a Mac mini was released to developers with an A14 chip that ran full macOS so there really isn’t any reason a pre M1 chip can run this. You can’t tell me an A14 can run macOS but not this. I have a 2020 iPad Pro as a main device because they last so long and I got 2 years before it was essentially obsolete. I spent like 2k on this thing. So naturally I’m still suspicious and displeased.
The big update to iPadOS 16 was this, nothing else is a major update or really all that interesting. This was a unique addition that finally brought real monitor support and now my 2k device isn’t getting it but a Mac mini with the same chip from years ago had no issue with much more complicated software. I call BS

Tbh, I completely agree with the other guy...Stage Manager is a mess. Even if you take into account that it is in beta, the fact is Apple is not going to radically change it before prime time. Being in beta means is 95% ready for prime time.
The UI looks cool, but with the current line up of Apple iPads, the screen real-estate does not justify the UI changes, too much wasted space and its cluttered. For external display, sure...but not everyone is going to do that. Most people that already have an external display already have a desktop setup, so it really seems redundant unless you are trying to draw on a bigger screen or something like that. I think if anything people might build their setups around this feature, however its not even close to refined yet in my book. Apple does a lot of things right, and a lot of things wrong...but I can see the potencial for this in the future.

Thanks for being so positive, I’m nervous of this new system, I have the M1 ipadPro 1TB cellular so at least I’m prepared. I was sad when I first upgraded because I thought there was no features for it, so now I can be happy, I bought an M1 Mack book 13” so I could do video editing and uploading to RUclips, I want to create my own channel and the iPad can’t do everything I want it to, which makes me sad, the MacBook is still sealed in the box for 5 months waiting for me to get around to opening it it’s just that it’s 256 GB and I think I want to upgrade it to more memory, I have 24,000 photos on my iPad and I’m afraid I’ll eat up all that MacBooks space, can you upgrade a MacBook memory or do you have to trade it? If I could add more memory I’ll do that. Maybe I’ll learn how to use external storage as well.

Stage manager in its current incarnation honestly is confusing. I see the vision but it's confusing. For example, with the Mac, you have the option of grouping several windows together in different spaces. So let's say you're on space #1 with 3 windows open. When you pull up mission control from within space #1, it shows all open windows from all spaces, not just the ones that are open in space #1. It's a bit jarring because the whole reason for stage manager is for decluttering your work flow into separate spaces of windows. So why does mission control not reflect this principle, and only show the windows that are open within the context of the current space you're in, with the option of showing all open windows with an additional gesture or button? Also, mission control currently has no conception of which space a window is in, it just blobs everything together in one big confusing mess.
The reason why it is so confusing and this may be what Mark from Bloomberg is alluding to is, the current implementation seems to be siloed. It feels like the stage manager people did their own thing and the mission control people did their own thing, and the two are just jammed together into one system called macOS. But they're not cooptimized to work with each other. It's confusing. It's almost like why does stage manager exist, what is it doing there? IF the goal is to partition and separate windows into different spaces, then all of the macOS window management functions like mission control etc. need to respect and reflect that partition. Otherwise the result is confusion. I honestly had to turn off stage manager at first because it didn't make sense.
The other confusing thing about stage manager on the iPad is why don't windows have the traffic lights as in macOS? As it stands, Apple added overlapping windows, but there's no one click solution (like exists on Mac and Windows and Linux for decades) to minimize, maximize, or close a window. These are basic window management tasks that are inexplicably missing from Stage Manager. So if you want to minimize a window you have to do a gesture. The same if you want to close a window. It is confusing. I get the vision, but it seems more like a science project or tech demo of what's possible rather than a smooth cohesive well-thought-out well-oiled window management machine.
I also think the sadder part is that Apple doesn't allow developers to develop their own window management solution. Don't like stage manager? Ok, develop an app for that. The app could be distributed through the App Store, apple could review it, and then users would have their choice, and may the best window manager win. Just my opinion. Thanks for your time.

@UC198A7K34nbWDhslxiAtv5Q with older versions of macOS, and including Ventura, you can have multiple desktops. And you can swipe between them. For sake of this conversation I refer to them as desktops. Mission control only shows the Windows from each desktop. This makes sense.
But let's take stage manager, within the context of the same desktop. With stage manager, you can have multiple groups of Windows. To get to a different group of Windows, you just click on the thumbnail in stage manager and it will switch between your windows. So let's say I have two groups of Windows (or spaces as I call it). Let's say group 1 has safari and notes open. And group 2 (or space 2) has the terminal and messages open. When I activate space 1 with safari and notes, the Windows on space 2 (terminal and messages) are out of sight and out of mind. So if I activate mission control from space 1, I'm not expecting to see terminal and messages pop up too. But they all look up in mission control.
So it's like you said, currently mission control respects different desktops. It only shows Windows that are open on a given desktop. But it doesn't respect the spaces within stage manager. It shows every window that is opened. It's a bit confusing. It's hard to explain via text without showing a demo but hopefully I am clear about what I mean.

I didn't download the developer betas this year because I have too much critical work this summer and could not afford the expected beta challenges; although I've heard these betas have been pretty stable from the outset. I was looking forward to stage manager but my iPad pro 12 inch doesn't have the M1 chip and nor does my MacBook Pro, so I feel I'll be missing out even though my products are not particularly old (MacBook was bought 2 months before the rollout in the UK when I'd had my iPad for 8 months).
I will not be upgrading anytime soon (as in years), but at least when I do get it, all the bugs will have gone or they'll be onto the next feature.

I don’t think it would be good for iPadOS or iPad users for stage manager to run on old devices. For one, making sure it can run on older iPads would hold the software back, which isn’t cool. Also, as a non-M1 iPad owner (iPad mini 6 woo), I would rather get the full 5-7 years of support without stage manager than have them say that I can get stage manager now but my support gets kicked next year or whatever. If you’re like me dying to replace your laptop with the versatility of the iPad, unfortunately you’ll just need to shell out for a new one. I’ve had my iPad mini for less than a year and hold no resentments to Apple for needing to upgrade because sometimes if you want nice things you just need to buy them

I don’t think this video aged too well. At this point in time Apple allowed stage manager on the A12x and z. And yes those chips have more GPU cores but the chips are very comparable in speed and power to the A13-A15 bionic chips and they decided to skip all of those chips. Which shows they’re trying to limit features that should be able to run on every iPad strictly to iPad pros and the new air.

Don’t forget, they held onto the Apple Watch Series 3 for YEARS past it’s prime in order to offer users an entry into the Apple ecosystem. Apple wants to make money. Dozens of articles and videos later, and I’m still not convinced that this is anything more than a ploy to get people to upgrade to the M series chips. If stage manager on an A series chip doesn’t offer the level of performance that is up to Apple’s standards, than they need to find someone who can write a better program.

    • @MexiChriS
      @MexiChriS 2 года назад +1

I still have the watch series 3 from launch and it’s garbage with todays software. That’s literally a perfect example of why tech should be upgraded like any other hardware / device component for new user interactivity and improvements / development. Spitting out code to run things doesn’t mean it’s smooth and user friendly and the right choice. It literally is done with emulators for example and they do not run too well. Hackintosh’s that get by but aren’t as solid as the real OS Mac would offer. Patches or updates ruin things and so do just writing up code / development teams spending time on hardware for modern tech. Truly, it hinders performance and overall users ability to enjoy their tech when going backwards. It’s nice when given but certain things have to be passed on and onwards.

Great video! Thanks. I personally can’t wait to use Stage Manager, even if it’s only on my M1 Pro MBP-once Ventura is released. That said, I have no intention of buying an M1 iPad Pro to put beta software on it. And, by the time iPad OS 16 is released, I’ll be waiting to see what new hardware is also released. So, AAPL shot themselves in the foot . If I could have tried Stage Manager out on my 2018 iPad Pro and found that I like it and that it is stable, I might well have ignored common sense and bought year-old tech rather than waiting for the new models.

I think there will be challenges. The ones who use the stage manager and those who not. I don’t think this will be a leap of productivity. In small windows you can’t work. You can switch easily, but when you want begin to work, stage manager is useless. Uses a lot of screen. You will have to jump again to old school screen. That is one step more, not less. If you want to see apps, ok. If you want to work in those apps, is useless. Option is good, though.

I have the Samsung tab s7 plus and I tested out the dex. My conclusion is that I hate it with a passion. Responsiveness and flow feels very slow, the app are not as optimised, the UI is very ugly with big window bezels sticking out, the touch UI capabilities were disabled reminding me on Windows UI for touch which is a terrible tablet experience, and my main issue with it is it was trying it to replicate a desktop.
And the thing for me is that by doing so, I got a worse desktop experience and it made me want to stop using it and move to an actual computer. Instead of making the tablet experience more productive and better, they abandoned it and created a worse desktop experience which made me want to use my main computer instead. They didn’t merge it with the existing tablet UI which I think is fine, you literally have to reboot the system. Its the same design principle as their foldable phones, a phone trying to be a tablet and phone but never reaching the full potential of both. Their foldable phone is a worse phone because of how thick it is to use and it’s worse a tablet by having a big bulge in the middle which creates image distortion in that area.
In regards to multitasking without going to dex, I would say it’s way worse than what iPad has at the moment. I stopped using it because of how unergonomic it is. My biggest multitasking workflow is the ability to open a new windows while I’m using the app and the only way I’ve found to do it is to use the small slide bar on the right and then drag another app onto it, just like the iPad prior to iPadOS 15 did. In iPadOS15, I could literally just slide from the top middle, it will open my home page and I can just easily tap on another app or even you use spotlight to find that app, and it will automatically open it in split screen. Very ergonomic.
Now to why I prefer the direction Apple is going with stage manager over the Dex. As mentioned before, the Dex provided with a worse desktop experience and made me want to go with my computer. What stage manager is doing is not providing a desktop experience to us but expanding on the capability of the tablet experience and increase multitasking within that domain. Every UI elements are still based around touch, it didn’t sacrifice where you’re required to use a keyboard to properly use that functionality. Instead of creating a Desktop experience, which will automatically be worse than the ones we already have, they improved the tablet experience to make multitasking even more accessible and without having to reboot into another mode. I won’t speak on the flow and quality of the feature considering it’s still beta 1 and still very buggy, but at least they didn’t put “MacOS” on the iPad which I’m highly against unlike Samsung Tab S7 literally putting a worse version of Windows/Linux on theirs.
Basically for me, I prefer less features but they are quality features that flows well and is not gonna be drowned out by other features, over putting features just to tick a box and advertise that they have this, even if the feature they added is really bad. Different ideology between apple and android and I prefer the former hence why I also have a iPhone. Simple, easily accessible, not as customisable but I’m perfectly fine with it because of the great UX it gives me

The problem with the stage manager controversy compared to the examples your brought up is that all of those things are based on hardware, not software. Bring stage manager to iPad pro 2/4! Maybe it's a buggy mess or maybe it doesn't have monitor support, but either way people would be happier. I think people would be more excepting of this philosophy if apple actually tried to bring it to a12z bionic instead of just saying it's impossible. Currently, they sound like a Karen saying what they are doing is fine when everyone else says that it's not. Try, and if it doesn't work, fine. But at least you tried to do what was right (also besides the fact that developers literally put stage manager on iPad pro without m1 and it worked perfectly fine🤦‍♂️🤬🤬¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

terrible decision by Apple. How much difference between 6GB and 8GB. A 10 year old Mac could do multitasking. People are not upgrading because Apple offers no great hardware features in their new iPad. And no Pro software to fully utilise the chipset. Then they decided to limit the older ipad which is capable to running new software feature. Also a 6GB A12Z ipad cannot support full 4K display?
