iPad Pro 13.9" 5th Generation. Thoughts? Love it! Looking forward to IOS 16! Finally going to be able to get use out of the M1 Chip. I did testing on 3D Mark and I score 5,200 on my iPad and on my new iMac 24" 4,916 on both a blue and now my green iMac. Crazy both iMac's got exactly the same score! I wonder why my iPad scored higher than the iMac? Have you tried doing some testing between the both?

Bought one (iPad Air M1) for my wife to replace her old iPad, (2014!) and as you’d expect, it’s like the proverbial greased lightning. Responsive and loads stuff instantly. At last, no complaints of, “it’s slow, taking forever to load, can’t use Office etc.” Happy wife, happy life!

I just replaced my 2 year old iPad Pro because I cracked my screen and it just got out of the AppleCare window and the money to get an iPad Air M1 256 GB storage when I looked long term would be more cost beneficial plus I would get the 5G antenna which my Pro didn't have, M1 chip, and upgrade in RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB, I felt it was a no brainer to upgrade to this iPad since due to the timing it fell into my budget nicely.
I have had it about a month and the experience is smooth. The things that make the Pro the superior tablet I never leveraged fully, the only thing is I enjoy to draw and I do miss the refresh rate the Pro tablet had think the Air has 60 Mhz versus the Pro 120 Mhz refresh rate, and drawing with the Pencil you notice it quickly even though I am not a professional, but it isn't a deal breaker I adjusted.
Ultimately in my hardware stack the iPad has become a critical conduit, being mobile a lot I sidecar to it and use it as a second display, it is my primary driver when I am on the go, I really missed it on trips to Key West and Cincinnati. I also use it from a dev perspective as I script in Pythonista and it was a great machine to when I need to SSH into our Docker instances.
From a personal consumption front - I realized in between me missing my iPad - how much I leveraged Apple News to read magazine articles, do self improvement courses, even minor photo editing in Photoshop.
Ultimately I see a more efficient iPad with the M1, I see the speed improvements, and I am excited to leverage iPadOS 16 to see how Stage Manager will be.

I bought an 11in M1 iPad Pro back in January. Even though I knew it was ridiculously over-powered I thought it was best to buy this over an A series iPad as a way of future-proofing my device. After watching WWDC 2022 it seems my decision was very much justified! Looking forward to seeing how you get on with Stage Manager.

Meanwhile, I ordered an iPad Mini (256 gigs) with wifi+cellular yesterday. I have a 12.9" Pro, but it's just too big to actually take anywhere spontaneously -- I only bring it if I know I'll actually use it for something. I've been itching for something more portable, and I'm pretty excited to see how I end up using it.

I have an iPad 2 (yes iPad 2 lmao) that I still use, and I've experienced first hand what it feels like to buy something so expensive and then a mere couple of years later, see it decay more and more until it's so incompatible with the new technology, it is now essentially a very heavy and convoluted ebook reader. Future Proofing is an essential element I look for when I'm throwing so much money into something. The iPad Air M1 256 GB is the sweet spot. 128GB ain't gonna cut it very soon I'm afraid. And the Pro 256GB is quite more expensive than the Air. At least where I live.

I think iPadOS is on a slow but gradual path to being closer to MacOS rather than iOS (in regards to features and the look and feel of the OS). The result of this is that more RAM is going to be required and the non-Apple silicon iPads just don't have enough RAM. That said, I am sure even the base level iPad will eventually have an M1 SoC.
It's only to be expected that you would buy an M1 iPad Mark as you need to keep us informed of what the differences are between the iPad variants.

I honestly think that both macOS and iPadOS are converging closer to each order to becoming one unified experience, as much as Apple says that's not going to happen and that they're both going to remain separate. If you've noticed, iPadOS has taken cues from macOS in terms of improvements and features such as Stage Manager and slightly better file management, and macOS has taken cues from iOS/iPadOS as well. They redesigned a lot of the icons as well as launchpad in macOS to make it feel more iOS like, as well as even brought Siri and the Control Center over to macOS, which both originated from iOS. Not to mention that both operating systems now run off of their M series chips. With the addition of Stage Manager on both iPadOS and macOS it's a big stepping stone towards creating one unified OS.

Aloha, Mark! Oddly enough... after watching your videos... I JUST bought a basic 8GB/256GB M1 Mac Mini. Using Universal Control, I find that it makes my existing 8th Gen iPad more productive. That iPad is my main productivity machine, I'm pleased to say. Instead of splitting the screen as I've done heretofore, I use the new M1 to hold the bits and bobs I need and use Universal Control and sort of "magic" all the stuff together. My lack of discipline is such that if I were to get an iPad with an M1 (...or M2 in future), I'd just leave my 8th-gen iPad lying about doing nothing. So? My new M1 Mac Mini has, in essense, become my Stage Manager of sorts. As always, I thank you for your thought provoking videos. You've given me advice that I've actually put to practical use in my real life! Mahalo!

My 2017 MacBook Pro display went out. It'll cost a lot to fix, so I'm trying to figure out what to do next. I'm a low level mouth-breather type of user. Content consumption, watching a movie, Zoom calls, and writing emails make up the bulk of my usage. Should I buy an iPad Air or MacBook Air? Both have the M1 chip. By the time I add a keyboard and pencil to the iPad, the cost is very similar.

While I don't have an M1 iPad, i've never been bothered by the lack of "proper" multitasking support on the iPads. Maybe i'm asking too little of the platform, I just don't see it as being useful as a work tool for me? I haven't really used an iPad with a pen or a keyboard either so maybe I just need to update myself on the platform? I just use mine as a glorified book reader.

Hi Mark, Great Video and now Sugar Hill Gang is back on the top of my playlist. Yea!
I will have to say that I am anxiously waiting for iPad OS16 because this is going to change my entire workflow. I will need to shift around my workstations to have the complete experience of iPad OS on top of my MacOS which is the communications backbone of my work system. Because my employer is a Microsoft Shop, the Teams and Outlook apps moved from the work PC to the iOS realm is going to be a huge benefit for my database work. In all, this cannot com soon enough.
And I am so lucky that I have postponed upgrading my fleet of 2014 and 2016 iPads that I use around the house. No those will all be upgraded to M1 (and hopefully M2) processors over the next few years and all will be able to use the new features in iPadOS16. I got lucky on that move only because I am cheap and will use my hardware until components give up and cannot be repaired.
Cheers and thanks for the video.

My only problem i have with stage manager is that even though there is the iPad mini 6 which I'm sure came out while another m1 iPad was out doesn't really have any support. How is that a 2021 device that they just dont care for. It probably could run stage manager with little to no problems. In my experience it was super fast and portable. If they cant bring the window support they could at least bring monitor support for the iPad. That's really not that hard.

Stage Manager on such a small display is close to useless. In fact running it on an 11-inch display is too cramped and I expect that is why Apple is releasing a 14 inch iPad as that is where Stage Manager will be best suited.

  • @martinkay67
    @martinkay67 2 года назад +1

The existance of stage manager drives me crazy.
When I got aware that only M1 chips will work with it, I sold my iPad Pro 12.9 (2018), although I stated a week before there would be absolutely no reason to replace this powerful device.
I also sold my iPad Air 4. Gen and bought an iPad Air 5. Gen. When it was already on its way to me, I've learned that the basic model will probably not support memory swap and may cause stage manager not to work properly.
Although I have no proof at all that stage manager will not on the basic model of the iPad Air, I returned it to Amazon and was about to buy the 256 GB version, when I saw that the iPad Pro 2021 with M1 was a bit less expensive. Then I weighed the pros and cons ... better display, 120 Hz refresh rate, 4 speakers, Thunderbolt support, better cameras (nay!) - but all in all I decided that the 128 GB iPad Pro 11" version was a better deal for a lower price than the iPad Air 5 Gen.
So, I now own a brand new iPad Pro 12.9" and a brand new iPad Pro 11" for a feature that has not yet arrived. This is insane! :-)
And I thank God that there is no iPad Mini with M1 around, otherwise I would habe replaced it, too.

I really don't understand the desire to turn an iPad into a laptop. I've had iPads for about 10 years, and MacBooks of various types and sizes for longer, and in my mind they're simply best for different things. The laptop is for content creation while the iPad is perfect for content consumption. Just as Steve Jobs said, in his presentation speech for the first iPad. (Also the only time he ever sat down in a presentation; although we should remember that he was very ill at the time.)

See Max Tech vidoe on the M2 MB Pro 13 M2 that shows that 8GB is not enough for heavy m,ultitasking as 8GB of RAM is not enough. The 4GB on the 2018 iPad Pro wwould mean a terrible experience making the iPad unusable with crashes and slowdowns. You are simply wrong and no way the 2018 could run Stage Manager well or even close.

Spoiler alert, stage manager is still a joke. I don’t fault them so much for how extremely buggy it is, I mean it is a beta after all. But the usability of it is terrible, it’s a million miles behind Dex.

Thumbs down because I really don't need another advertisement for Apple and other products.
For this reason I shall unsubscribe.
    Bye.

Well, thanks for hanging around - genuinely appreciate it (although I’m perplexed as to why it took this long for you to shoot off, given the wealth of Apple content I’ve previously published 🤨).
