As great as he was I was always a bit disappointed because I got to see him in college a lot and in person. He hurt is hand badly before his rookie season and was never the same shooter, seriously he wasn't. That sounds insane but it is true. The game I will never forget was Indiana State at Creighton for the Missouri Valley Championship his junior season. Bird was 17 of 18 with 10 minutes left and the Jays down point. The Jays decided to hold for the last shot with 10 MINUTES to play because they thought that was the only way they could beat Bird. They were able to take the last shot and Rick Apke hit the game winner with no time left. When Bird shot the ball in college you were shocked when he missed he just seemed to be the most automatic bucket maker I have ever seen.
Belongs on Mount Rushmore, I don't care what anybody says! He did it against teams THAT PLAYED DEFENSE THE *WHOLE* GAME! The physical intimidating type, not the grammar school type they play today. That isn't even close. MJ never made the players around him better. Bird made EVERY player on his team better, unselfish play was a virus and they all caught it.
Bird’s the guy that every street kid thinks he can take, and he has 8 out of 10 points on you before you even know how. Watch the rebounds, the assists, the steals. You barely see the hands move.
Larry Bird didn't just want his teammates to be better he wanted his opponents to be better. Him and Michael and Kobe played the game of basketball like it was Billiards they wanted the degree of difficulty. That's what it's all about.
Kobe is the most over rated player of all time. He was a great 1x1 player but a terrible team player. If he could ever have played unselfishly he could be a top player.
You literally have under a second to make a pass before the layout changes. *That's how far advanced Larry was.* NOBODY can compare. As far as his teammates are concerned, They had even less time to realize the ball was already in their hands~!
Westbrook's as well. If the Celtics did not need him to score 25-30 points a game, he could have put up a triple double just about any night. I have watched the NBA for almost 60 years, and I have never seen a better passer.
Michael, I don’t think I’ve seen one with faster hands. I remember a game against the Nuggets in 90 where Michael Adams drives the lane. Bird’s in the paint and just picks his pocket. 6’10 guy pick pocketing a 5’9 guard like he was in grade school. I also remember how he broke Dominique Wilkins ankles with a twitch and no dribble

@@dp233332 "at that point McHale was still coming off the bench" definitely makes it sound like he was regularly a bench player as opposed sitting due to an inconsequential injury. I don't know why else he would even mention it. Whatever, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

You sir, are a moron. Is there a more athletic player now that Dominique Wilkins? See what he says about Larry Bird. Maybe see what MJ says about him. Until you watched him play you just can’t understand what he could do in a game.
Grateful Dead is a top 3 most overrated bullshit bands of all time. Walton does know his hoops, because he watched most of his career, too bad he couldn't have actually played more than a few seasons.
The main thing for me is the glamorizing of Bill Walton. I can't stand it. He admits he is a pot head and an acid user. This quite clearly is not good.
Bird was about as good as it gets from 1984 ~ 1988...& i hated him. Wow....he was tremendous....forget the shooting, forget the passing...dude was a great rebounder as well. Best Frontline ever...Bird was the best rebounder....
1:10 McHale says, "... wait 'til he starts shooting right handed." LMAO!! That would be a typical McHale comment. Dude was/is funny as hell.

One has to wonder just how greater this man would have been had he not injured his back.
IIRC he played most of his career with a screwed up back..
I feel sorry for the younger generation.. They have yet to see REAL basketball.. RIP NBA

Yeah it blows me away for him to be so good and be so slow. With a 12 inch vertical.
Gimme the 86 Celtics over any other championship team
It took bill walton TEN FULL SECONDS before he referenced the grateful dead. Way too long for bill
Larry did all the small stuff so well. Loose ball hustler , made other players better and brains.

I think McHale was injured during that West Coast swing in 86. Not available but definitely wouldn't have been still coming off the bench.
