Walton WAS a legend. I can still remember an exhibition game he played in, right after UCLA and before his pro career --- against the Soviet national team. There was a clear breakaway / cherry pick layup unfolding for the Soviets, and in what seemed like 2 inhumanly gigantic strides a Bill Walton appeared from nowhere to swat the layup away. It was jaw-dropping stunning. Injuries should be set aside --- judge the talent. Walton is easily a top 5 center of all time.

    • @cindyknudson2715
      @cindyknudson2715 2 года назад +6

And he wasn't superfluous. There were games when he came in to do the dirty work to protect the other two from fouls. To draw the other side into fouls. The Celtic bench was a great asset.
There's an interview where Bird particularly praises Kite and the rest of the second team for the work they did in practice to challenge the first team to bring their A game. I don't remember his exact words but he praised that contribution to the team and their being fully prepared to come into the game when needed and deliver.

He was the 12th man on that roster, no doubt, but he contributed. He may have been the worst free throw shooter of all time. Perhaps the best thing he had going for him was that Larry Bird liked him. But, he played for the Celtics from 1983 to 1988, which meant he played in four straight finals, and got two rings. Not a bad career for a guy who was not the most talented.

Just like Robert Parish, I was introduced to the Grateful Dead late. I was a freshman in college. My parents made me take University 101 to help me transition to college life. I didn't want to so I chose a night class of the course. Wednesday 5-8PM. There were only 12 of us. The instructor of the course was a Dead fan and so was one of my classmates. A concert of theirs was coming to campus Halloween Night 1985. The student told Mr. Pruitt that he would be missing class because of the concert. Mr. Pruitt said that's a shame. He then asked where were his seats. The guy replied, "In the rafters near the roof." Mr. Pruitt chuckled and said, "Oh, that's too bad. I guess I'll have to bring my wife." He then reached into his is suit jacket and pulled out third row tickets for the class to attend the show and backstage passes. He joked, "Faculty has its privileges!" My neighbor next door loved music like me so I asked if he had any Grateful Dead music. He said, "Oh Yeah!" He pulled out 3 cassette cases for recorded concerts, about 180 tapes. I got into them and after the show I've been a fan since.

Someone told Jerry & the band & they came out & talked with Bill & the team until well after showtime. Then Bill & everyone watched the concert from backstage. AND went back the next night.

Despite all of this, I have huge admiration and "love" for Walton, and although we'll never know for sure, I suspect that if he had good health, he'd probably be a Top 5 all-time NBA center, after Wilt, Russell, Jabbar and somewhere with Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson.

When Bill was healthy, he was a great all around player and I don't use the word great lightly. Bill may be the best passing center ever, he could score on anybody and filled that role if he needed to. Walton is also one of the greatest centers on defense - when healthy he was right there with Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem and could, and did shut down the paint. Add to that his superior rebounding and high level outlet passing skills. I remember I was surprised the Celtics were able to get Walton. More amazing than that was that Bill was healthy and damn good too. 🔥💪

I agree. Boston was absolutely stoked to the roof that season. They had their unbeatable starting 5, plus Walton, Sischting, Wedman and a couple of other players, who showed flashes of brilliance, coming off the bench, to continue the torture of the opposing team. Robert Parish was one of the best floor running centers, a great scorer and rebounder. Bill Walton, when healthy, was one of the best centers in the game. They also had Greg Kite, who could bang, carve out space in the middle, block out, and rebound. They had 3, over 7 foot centers. Walton made 6'11" Kevin McHale look short.

So glad to get to hear from Mr. Parish on this topic -- I loved his game, which only got better after Walton arrived. In '86, the Celtics' bench was good enough to be a playoff contender all by themselves, which is why the starters' were so sharp game in and game out. If you're a C's fan old enough to remember, that year was downright magical to behold.

Shows how wise Walton is. He knew Parish was an established starter in the league and for the Celts. Of course Walton was on his way to being one of the all-time greats at Portland until the injuries hit. So he wisely approached Parish to let him know he was just there as a backup and to help he and the team out.

I actually love when he announces. He had such good rapport with his partner announcing too. calling Greg Ostertag one of the greatest during a game and getting everyone to laugh. I miss that.

Today's game looks like rec league ball. Boring offense and everybody looking to shoot threes----even big men who shouldn't even try. No post play, little intermediate game. Back doors and baseline cuts, no mas. I'm not paying $50 to watch this play ground offenses.

He had one year of quality basketball with the Celtics and turned it into one of the most dominant years in NBA history. The culture was the most memorable part and a key reason he was NBA 75.

He was dominant and if healthy wouldve been one of the greatest to ever do it

After showing how good he could be for two
years in Portland, then having his career come
to a crashing halt due to injuries. I was happy
to see him have one last hurrah with the Celts.
Alas it was just the one, before injuries finally
    ended it.

Walton's friendliness at first did not match the Celtic culture of cocky cool. Just like the Celtics hated the so called cheesy smiling Magic. But then they all realized that Walton wasn't faking - he really was genuine. And when Celtic added that to the team, it bumped them a notch. I still can't stand Walton's everything is great personality, but I have to admit that there is nothing phony about him. Same for Magic.

This is great to see. One of the great teams of all-time for sure. Hated them back in the day as a die hard Bad Boy Piston fan--and Walton was annoying if he wasn't on your team lol --but no question these dudes could play some ball--team ball at it's finest-- kicked our asses enuf times. Nothing but love from this Piston fan for Bird, McHale, Chief, Ainge, DJ, Walton, et al.

Best team ever? You sure could make that argument. Look how many great players they had, and the super chemistry. Magic's Lakers and the Celtics somewhat mitigated each others' historic greatness. There have been no better, more complete basketball teams.

I was like Yo BILL WALTON and ARVYDAS SABONIS of all legendary passing centers. anyways. i digress. ayone know a channel that has all the the 1986 games?
