And he wasn't superfluous. There were games when he came in to do the dirty work to protect the other two from fouls. To draw the other side into fouls. The Celtic bench was a great asset. There's an interview where Bird particularly praises Kite and the rest of the second team for the work they did in practice to challenge the first team to bring their A game. Just wish we could've kicked the hole out of the Lakers ass in the finals. I've always believed that it was going to be an ass kicking sweep for Boston.
As a kid, I could never bring myself to root for UCLA, so loved it when the David Thompson-led NC State Wolfpack dethroned the Bruins. And then, Walton's Blazers beat my favored 76ers in the '77 finals...then went and played for the hated Celtics. Despite all of this, I have huge admiration and "love" for Walton, and although we'll never know for sure, I suspect that if he had good health, he'd probably be a Top 5 all-time NBA center, after Wilt, Russell, Jabbar and somewhere with Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson.
When Bill was healthy, he was a great all around player and I don't use the word great lightly. Bill may be the best passing center ever, he could score on anybody and filled that role if he needed to. Walton is also one of the greatest centers on defense - when healthy he was right there with Russell, Wilt, Kareem, Hakeem and could, and did shut down the paint. Add to that his superior rebounding and high level outlet passing skills. I remember I was surprised the Celtics were able to get Walton. More amazing than that was that Bill was healthy and damn good too. 🔥💪
I agree. Boston was absolutely stoked to the roof that season. They had their unbeatable starting 5, plus Walton, Sischting, Wedman and a couple of other players, who showed flashes of brilliance, coming off the bench, to continue the torture of the opposing team. Robert Parish was one of the best floor running centers, a great scorer and rebounder. Bill Walton, when healthy, was one of the best centers in the game. They also had Greg Kite, who could bang, carve out space in the middle, block out, and rebound. They had 3, over 7 foot centers. Walton made 6'11" Kevin McHale look short.
I have probably watched this half a dozen times. With admiring Walton's play, greatly, knowing his history, being a huge fan of this team of Celtics, loving the game of basketball, and me being old and sentimental, I cloud up, just a little, every time I watch it.
Nice to see how his teammates realized how fortunate they were to have him. If only for 1 full season. He truly made everyone better like few players ever have. Even as a sub.
I’m 63 now. Always lived in Dallas. Back when I was maybe 10 the Celtics were on most Sunday afternoons after football season. They were just my favorites. Robert Parrish. Big Chief they called him. Never smiled. What a player. These guys played basketball. Grew up always loving the game. Still to this day. Now it’s Mavs and Celtics in finals.
So glad to get to hear from Mr. Parish on this topic -- I loved his game, which only got better after Walton arrived. In '86, the Celtics' bench was good enough to be a playoff contender all by themselves, which is why the starters' were so sharp game in and game out. If you're a C's fan old enough to remember, that year was downright magical to behold.
Shows how wise Walton is. He knew Parish was an established starter in the league and for the Celts. Of course Walton was on his way to being one of the all-time greats at Portland until the injuries hit. So he wisely approached Parish to let him know he was just there as a backup and to help he and the team out.
My favourite Red story was how he stormed into Walton's examination, ignored the advice and directly asked Walton if he could play. Reminds me of the "Do you love this game?" Monologue from HUSTLE.

Today's game looks like rec league ball. Boring offense and everybody looking to shoot threes----even big men who shouldn't even try. No post play, little intermediate game. Back doors and baseline cuts, no mas. I'm not paying $50 to watch this play ground offenses.
He had one year of quality basketball with the Celtics and turned it into one of the most dominant years in NBA history. The culture was the most memorable part and a key reason he was NBA 75.
I recently watched a video breaking down his greatness as a player and i was pretty shocked (youngish fan of bball) He was dominant and if healthy wouldve been one of the greatest to ever do it
After showing how good he could be for two years in Portland, then having his career come to a crashing halt due to injuries. I was happy to see him have one last hurrah with the Celts. Alas it was just the one, before injuries finally ended it.
Walton's friendliness at first did not match the Celtic culture of cocky cool. Just like the Celtics hated the so called cheesy smiling Magic. But then they all realized that Walton wasn't faking - he really was genuine. And when Celtic added that to the team, it bumped them a notch. I still can't stand Walton's everything is great personality, but I have to admit that there is nothing phony about him. Same for Magic.
This is great to see. One of the great teams of all-time for sure. Hated them back in the day as a die hard Bad Boy Piston fan--and Walton was annoying if he wasn't on your team lol --but no question these dudes could play some ball--team ball at it's finest-- kicked our asses enuf times. Nothing but love from this Piston fan for Bird, McHale, Chief, Ainge, DJ, Walton, et al.
Best team ever? You sure could make that argument. Look how many great players they had, and the super chemistry. Magic's Lakers and the Celtics somewhat mitigated each others' historic greatness. There have been no better, more complete basketball teams.
@@mc76 why is carmelo or westbrook on the team? Or dwade or half the junk on that list? He did more in 5 healthy yrs than all of that junk did in 30. He had one year of quality basketball with the Celtics and turned it into one of the most dominant years in NBA history. The culture was the most memorable part and a key reason he was NBA 75.
I recently watched a video breaking down his greatness as a player and i was pretty shocked (youngish fan of bball)
He was dominant and if healthy wouldve been one of the greatest to ever do it
After showing how good he could be for two
years in Portland, then having his career come
to a crashing halt due to injuries. I was happy
to see him have one last hurrah with the Celts.
Alas it was just the one, before injuries finally
ended it.
Really good Man.
Boston Celtics is amazing. It's a original dream team. From Brazil.🏀🏀🏀👍👍👍
NBA BOSTON CELTICS I LOVE BOSTON CELTICS 1946-2022
What a wonderful spirit.
I was playing ball in high school during this run...so cool
One can only imagine what Walton might have done in a full healthy career.
Probably the Fifth greatest center of all time:
Kareem
Russell
Wilt
Shaq
Walton
@@broaddusmarines Hakeem ?
The only reason that he is on the 75th Anniversary team is because the assemblers of the team projected what he might have been.
@@broaddusmarines Shaq walked on every play.
@@mc76 why is carmelo or westbrook on the team? Or dwade or half the junk on that list? He did more in 5 healthy yrs than all of that junk did in 30. Stat accumulating in no defense hi jacked teams who got their coaches fired and teammates miserable. Ur boy melo and Iverson had to literally beg for a team in their last 5 yrs. Junk.
Still can’t believe he’s gone (RIP). The basketball world seems a lot sadder these days.
Rip Bill.
Walton really made that team super good.
His passing ability, along with Birds made
that team the greatest passing team ever.
You could see the effect it had on the other
players. It inspired them to be better passers
as well.
Man I wish I was born like 5 years before 1981 so I could appreciate Birds Celtics with McHale Parish DJ Ainge and Walton
They were something special!!! As a die hard Laker fan, you knew 💯 you were in for a war when Larry and the C's were the opponent!!! Only team I ever worried about, but saying that, 🤷 it was a lot of worry!!! 😆🤣😂😹
The guy collected Championships - NBA, NCAA, probably high school, CYO ...
Yes, Bill's high school team was extremely dominant, they basically crushed everybody they played. Of course, Bill was unstoppable then.
does anyone have this whole season?? i love how the Celtics took a chance on him after this injured tenure w the clippers and for modern NBA enthusiasts; this season of bil walton is unkown. i remember watching a Highlight Video of nikola Jocic and the only comparisons the people in the comments were able to muster up was Hakeem Olajuon of all people.. I was like Yo BILL WALTON and ARVYDAS SABONIS of all legendary passing centers. anyways. i digress. ayone know a channel that has all the the 1986 games?
"Spit it out Bill, this is only a 20-second time out!"
--Larry Bird
If he didnt break down woukd have been in top 10 all time no question talent and basketball iq
It was magical year for the C's. I met Bill at the Scotch and Sirloin in Boston after a game bur he never came back after that. Professional sports isn't easily
I can’t even begin to imagine what kind of persuasive skills it would take to convince Larry Bird to attend a Grateful Dead concert!
That's how special the Big Redhead was!!! 🙏🏾 RIP 💜 Mr. Walton!!! Amazing human!!✊🏾🎯💯
