Tifa's date was completely reworked and changed from the original while Aerith's stayed basically the same. The whole Zack talk is pretty much 1:1 to what she said in the OG. "I'm trying to find you" is also directly referenced later in the game, in the forest when Aerith says "Focus on you Cloud, the one i've been trying to find."
Aerith and Zack does not belong together, Aerith told Cloud: I wanna be with you❤ also at the end of the game we learn more about her feelings for Cloud

If you look at the posters in the hallway, this is the “G-Edition” which I’m pretty sure is a reference to the fact that in CC, Genesis said there were multiple possible endings/interpretations, but ONLY his was correct. So this is his version of the story’s ending.
Aerith is so sweet. No one could NOT get butterflies from that, but the fact remains... Cloud doesnt need or deserve a love intrest, the boy needs therapy- or the other type of love, caring. nurturing..that's why I like Aerith 1000% over Tifa im not even convinced Tifa wanted him to kiss her! It wasn't romantic..they could have said things difrently that would have made him not look like he was desprate :( it made me uncomfy.....im glad im not a ClouTi fan because I would have been a little upset. They kissed, and thats great! but, honestly..he could have just hugged her tight AND spoke to her more- given her reassurane rather than simply kissing her, I would want him to talk to me
If you have never been in love with a childhood friend, it is terrifying to walk that line, and that's under normal circumstances. Cloud and Tifa have different memories of the flashback that are getting in the way of expressing how they feel, and neither is aware just how deep their feelings go.

To a certain extent Cloud knows that he is putting up a false persona, and Aerith mentions that on this date and in the sleeping forest, but on both occasions cloud plays dumb. Tifa is the only one he told about his internal struggle and fear. Tifa and Cloud might not say much but there is reason words aren't the only thing is kind of their slogan. They are among the most misunderstood romantic relationships in all of media and that makes me sad.

My favorite part of FF7 fandom is how aggressively people defend their preferred waifu. IMO the romance doesn’t really matter all that much, it’s just some flavor the OG and the Remakes added but it’s not even like a B or C plot in either version - more prominent in the remakes but not much.
What is interesting about this date in comparison to the Tifa date is Cloud. He asks about the others (in chapter 8) and watches the fireworks instead of looking at Aerith and at the end, she says thank you for the moment, but his response is, “But I didn't do anything. “ whereas he gives Tifa undivided attention and goes out of his way to make sure she knows that she is not getting ahead of herself and that he feels the same way she does. Going through the game a second time on hard, I noticed that he does not show romantic intent with Aerith as a matter of fact he goes out of his way to shut down her advances and to make sure Tifa does not get the wrong idea. The first time through the game I didn't quite notice the difference in his body language and facial expressions nor how much more blunt he is with Aerith, He makes a point to set a clear boundary with her and it's always her showing her feelings. I am willing to bet that this was intentional because Cloud going after two women would make him an asshole so I am glad his feelings are clearly defined.
I don’t think you realize that Cloud is nervous during this date. He now remembers who Zack is and that he’s dead(from chapter 11) and it’s bothering him that Aerith is kept in the dark about it. You can see it in the very same chapter when they all reunite in the Shinra Manor and Cloud is awkward around Aerith until Tifa steps in and quickly changes the subject, that’s why he brings up the same topic to both women during the dates. Cloud is openly jealous and blunt during the Gongaga visit to the point where it actually surprises not only Aerith but Tifa as well. Not to mention you can physically see Cloud open up and get more comfortable once Aerith says she likes Cloud for who he is. It’s one of gamings’ most infamous love triangles for a reason, he’s into both of them.
Obviously I see Cloud having feeling for Tifa, but with Aerith she is still grieving. The boundaries are set for both Cloud and Aerith, as she knows Cloud is also going through a lot. What I love about this date is their care for each other in that state. Tifa date is awesome, but she wants a normal dating life with Cloud. Which at this point isn’t possible. In that manner they are both getting ahead of themselves. Truly love the dynamics and growth.

Yes, the line delivery is blunt, but consider that at this point, all Cloud knows to be true of Zack is that he left Aerith hanging, which IS, objectively, a loser thing to do. He doesn't know what the player or Aerith understands about the kind of person Zack is. The delivery is softer in Japanese anyway, and Cloud's mo-cap actor said on stream that Cloud was trying to comfort Aerith. He is clumsy about it first because Cloud is naturally not the best at cheering people up and second because he has no idea who Zack is here. As for the GS date with Aerith, I don't read it as nervous in the sense of him liking Aerith and feeling awkward because he is trying to be respectful of Zack, who he now remembers. No, I think it is more likely he is nervous because he wants to comfort her when she is clearly sad, but he also does not want to cross an emotional line giving Aerith the wrong idea. So after some hesitancy he takes her hand and gives her the moment she is asking for. Aerith falling in “like” with Cloud does not mean that the reverse is happening and I think if more people looked at Cloud's interactions with her independent of her own personal feelings they would realize that he does not have intent to pursue a romantic relationship with her. His relationship with Tifa has blatant romantic intent all throughout the game, its especially obvious on this second playthrough. So, yes Cloud is attracted to two women, he is allowed to be, that being said attraction does not always mean a desire to be with someone romantically. I have always found that this story has been clear that Cloud has always had both with Tifa and only Tifa and the retrillogy doubled down on sending that message, removing player interpretation of their relationship in various ways. Like the flower for example it's not a choice anymore, the romantic tension between Cloud and Tifa is all over both games and part three has not even been released yet. I have nothing against shipping Cloud and Aerith but I do think that the plot is clear that Cloud and Tifa are in love without even realizing that the feelings are mutual.
