  • A convicted murderer, who used a narwhal tusk to tackle Fishmongers’ Hall attacker Usman Khan, has spoken exclusively to Channel 4 News, saying his actions prove “people can change”.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
In his first ever interview, Steve Gallant said he hopes he can inspire other prisoners to reform, as he paid tribute to Jack Merritt - one of two people killed by Khan two years ago.
Mr Gallant was on his first day out of prison, on day release while serving a 17-year sentence, when he confronted Khan who was armed with two knives and had a fake bomb strapped to his body.

    • @tomsixsix

Life sentence does not mean you remain in prison for life, just that restrictions upon yourself apply for life. For instance, Steve would be subject to recall to prison for breaking any of the terms of his release, which would be a prohibition on holding weapons for example. a requirement to live in certain areas, and/or to report regularly to a police station. If he were to commit any crime, even minor, he'd like face severe consequences, possibly years more in prison. He won't ever be able to work in any job that exposes him to vulnerable individuals, and many other jobs will be barred too. It's hardly a free reign.
There's really no reason to keep someone who's otherwise safe to the public in prison forever. It's a revenge tactic but the goal of prison is not revenge but to reform them. Looks like it worked well for Steve.

'Life' sentences are a joke , in Ireland and England. It is only about 25 years. If I had my way, killers, rapists, acid attackers etc would get life until natural death, sentences.

Do me a favour! The man had a few minutes of bravery, but it says NOTHING about whether or not he's still a danger. This man and another killed an innocent manin the most brutal way imaginable. If there was any justice, he'd be dead now, having died in a gas chamber. The fact that he instinctively acted in this one situation says NOTHING. The savagery of his crime shows a level of viciousness that will ALWAYS be a danger to others. All this fawning over him now is completely sickening.

@@momurda6 The man planned and murdered an innocent man, laying in wait then beating him so brutally that medics could not find the man's mouth. If you can't judge that, then nothing matters. Gallant is a complete savage. The fcat that that savagery worked to the good of people this time does not absolve him. He should have been executed.

Must have been hard on the family of the man who's skull he caved in. But Jon snow is not the type to care for such piffle-paffle. His breed have a habit of having their way -ill of good. An easy relationship with open doors and prescribed entitlement. For His upper-Middle class guilt is not my guilt. None of my ancestors behaved like his. Of that, I'm certain. No easy chairs in the Indian sun for them. So FU.

The guy he killed raped and killed a prostitute as well as burgled one of the guys that got him and attacked his pregnant gf.
Do you think this was a random attack? It was revenge. The guy that got killed deserved it. Have a good look into the case. I don't think they meant to kill the guy, but even if not, they did the world a fucking favour getting rid of him. Google his name, or Google his nickname the papers deliberately omitted due to his reputation "Bam Bam". You'll see he was a waste of oxygen. Anyone who knew the guy was happy to see him wiped out. He was an absolute menace.
