You can actually see the mouse barely escape in the last two frames before it cuts off (you can see this by using < or > keys while pause on 11:09 to move frame by frame)!

I watched the uncensored video on his website. I was expecting it to be gory, but I didn't see a single drop of blood. This one isn't as humane as the standard snap traps because it took a while for the mice to actually die in this particular trap. I think it's more like the Halifax Gibbet than a guillotine :P

I could not help but notice that some of the guillotine traps you showed as examples have springs made from the hammer spring for a muzzloader rifle or musket! They must truly be very old

You know what your channel has taught me? That no matter what we do, we're going to be fighting rodent infestations forever, just as we have done, since forever. I really liked the longer, more in depth video that showed some of the techniques of the build.
As an aside, I'm personally fine with the RUclips edits, I don't care to see anything die, especially if it is not instant. I keep reptiles and live on a farm, so I understand that it's just part of life sometimes, but I'm a softie and avoid it. Thank you for putting in the work and testing all this stuff for us.

I agree, his voice is half the reason I watch. Sometimes I let the video play in the background on my iPad while I race Real Racing 3. Shawn's super calm soft voice relaxes me and eases my chronic anxiety.
Just a tip for metal working, the hottest part of the flame is not actually right where it begins, it's at the tip of the bright blue inner cone of the flame. Place your metal at the end of that cone to heat it faster.
If you use Linseed oil be careful because your wipe can actually ignite itself if left folded or crumbled ;)

This was the best video you've bade I think, seeing all the work that went into making the trap was really interesting and I hope you make more like this.

@@markwillams420 yeah I have seen pretty much every video he has made. His earlier videos where he made survival traps are great as well as all the archery and wild edible videos. I really like the videos where he would recreate the items found along side Otzi and the Canadian ice man. I have even commented asking him to do more videos like them again, lol.

Blank is correct. It’s a woodworking/metalworking term used to refer to a piece of stock that has only been sized on the exterior to rough dimensions, and has not yet been machined into its final form.

That cherry burl is a MONSTER. I live in Maine and we have a fair amount of paper birches (as well as other kinds of birch) and I’ve been looking for a good sized burl for a while and it is SHOCKINGLY hard to find one. I swear to god before I started looking for one I saw them everywhere but now that I’m on the hunt they have proved shockingly elusive

Search for "mousetrap monday" in your search engine of choice.
You should add another one of those retentions brackets at the end of the blade to prevent the blade from bending away from the trap leaving a gap for the mouses head, forcing an inhumane death upon it.

Shawn, thanks for the very interesting video. I have a suggestion you might want to consider if you ever make more of these: when splitting the steel packing band (great material!), use a small cold chisel and cut the centerline in a zig-zag pattern. This splits the steel band lengthwise _and_ each cut piece has teeth, almost fully formed, along the cut edge. All that's needed is to dress the teeth with a file. This can save you quite a bit of time. The cold chisel is a tool rarely seen these days; when I was growing up, there was a proper blacksmith nearby. He was a real artist with a cold chisel, and I remember him showing me how, using chisels of different sizes, he could do many metal cutting operations, including cutting things like keyways in a round shaft. His hand and eye were so practiced that you'd swear the work had be done with a milling machine.
I hope this might come in handy for you sometime - I know you're a student of techniques of the "old ways." Now I'm wondering if I could build one of those large enough to get a skunk...have to think on that one some! Many thanks for all of your hard work and educational videos.
