I saw Todd and Utopia many times in the late 70’s / early 80’s. The opening guitar part of this always makes me smile - like I’m welcoming an old friend.
saw rundgren 2023 and he didnt let me down, he looked lik eme, singin in my room by myslef. validated everything i thought and loved about Todd. a memory ill never let go
As David Bowie said back in the late 1980's... "if Todd Rundgren had bothered to play the record company game, he'd have been a household name". True American music legend.
jonnyblent Just saw your post.. Fan of Bowie, HUGE longtime fan of TR and Utopia, (since' 82) Concerts are numerous, and grateful I could experience TR in many of his genres.. ☺
If there wasn't a Todd Rundgren I would probably be not here. His voice and brilliance of mind has always inspired me to go on and try to be my best me.
Todd did play the record company game, just not as an artist, that's why his music remains true. He has brought so many others great music to life as a producer, - Meatloaf, XTC, Psych Furs, The Tubes, NY Dolls, Patti Smith etc etc... Thanks Todd, you showed 'em. BTW, Utopia is simply one of the best live rock acts ever, so many great memories for me .
this is such a f 'ing great song. I just cant believe how good these guys are. perfect harmonies, excellent musicianship, very creative, and they sound so really good.
2021.. Great music is one of the "soul soothers", I believe Saw TR in July '20- I've seen many of Todd's shows, beginning at the Park West ( seats were up against the stage) 💕😊🌼 he shook my hand, and took pics with "my friend's camera Lost touch, still 🤷♀️
I saw them perform this at The Schaefer Festival on the pier in NYC back in the mid 80's. It started to mist shortly before they kicked this tune. And when Todd played the opening guitar riff, a wind kicked up and it started to come down a little harder. In the night, the stage lighting made it feel like a spiritual epiphany. Needless to say, they just killed it. The entire show. Todd was in great voice and the band was on point. A night to remember
Life long Todd fan. Thought I heard everything he did solo and and with Nazz/Utopia but caught this on RUclips and have come back to listen to it a dozen times now. Great live performance, the entire ensemble seems to be having a blast giving it their all. Would have loved to be at this show
This is absolutely awesome. After all of these years, it wasn't until seeing this that I figured out that Roger is singing lead. I should have known but it never occurred to me. Thank you thank you for posting.
Loved this had the album as well as oops wrong planet and raj.. utopia played at sunset at the August 1979 led zeppelin knebworth concert England . Which is where I saw them and zap of course. Memorable night indeed..
I only saw these guys once and it was on Halloween no less. A very good show and frankly I have missed out by not going to see them again. Thanks for uploading this as I enjoy it thoroughly. Great bass By Kasim Sulton along with fantastic harmonies in a live setting.
Kasim is one of the best. I saw this line-up live in 1980, the tour supporting the album "Adventures In Utopia". One of the best shows ever, and I've seen Todd quite a few times, as well. But this version of Utopia was tight.
Roger is killing on the vocals and really feeling it, but man, when Todd kicks in on the guitar solo at 3:03, they became the greatest band in the east and west! Seriously, listen to that part again after the way impressive harmony vocals, the guitar and drums in particular (Kaz is always the shizzle - dude is just perfect). Why can't they do one more tour?
Much like Frank Zappa, his song writing and producing gets so much more attention than the fact that he (and FZ) are among the best guitarists in music!
The best Utopia song (IMHO) and I must have played it hundreds of times... an absolutely awesome tune. I saw Utopia a couple of times in the 80s (in London) and the gigs were unforgettable.
FKN GREAT BAND.. This is what a great band should sound like live.. take notice.. the incredible rythm section of Willie on drums and Kas on Bass.. keeping the groove moving while not interfering with the two key artists on this one.. Go Roger and of course incredible guitar work by Todd... before there was Jessie Gress...
Thanks Harry..haven't seen this since my VCR tape of this..still have it, guess I need to do something about that.Great to watch on this Saturday morning. .
Saw them do this live at UMASS long time ago. They would take turns playing each other's instruments alternating on different songs, just amazing melodies, each one can sing wonderfully too. My first concert on LSD and it was quite noteworthy. Flashpods, drum set rose up from the stage with rocket smoke coming out as it spun around. Todd IS God.
HarryRu.. Hello! been a subbie for years. I had "Caravan" in my head since this a m.. now I am finally getting a chance to watch this upload. I actually have this on VHS, but no longer have my player.. 😠 Thank you, btw, for all your "primo" vid shares.
Yup. Is a fan of the sport. Son played in the minors never making it to the big show. I sat next to Todd last summer in Chicago at the bar at the Millennium Park Cafe. We chatted about the Cubs stellar season while we watched the White Sox on the television over the bar. Simply an average Joe conversation. At first, I don't think he understood that I knew exactly who he was because I am a fan... until I dropped "So your tour ended with Ringo Starr but are you still sticking with Kasim Sulton?" I think he was disappointed that it couldn't simply be two guys talking baseball at a bar.
Great thing about Todd, he let Utopia be Utopia...Sulton, Powell, Wilcox would have been a great band even without TR (well maybe). But even though Todd was the leader, and star, he let his bandmates grab much of the spotlight.
TR knew the pitfalls of the music industry and who he’d have to sacrifice too get there.. in interview he said or to the effect” we know the underbelly of the music industry all too well and the animal that drives it! His face had set like stone
Roger very much missed in the very recent Utopia incarnation. The replacement is skilled enough but Roger to Utopia is as Jon Lord to Deep Purple, Billy Currie to Ultravox,. Rick Wakeman to Yes: irreplaceable.
I saw Todd and Utopia many times in the late 70’s / early 80’s. The opening guitar part of this always makes me smile - like I’m welcoming an old friend.
Todd showing his guitar licks and the rest of the band showing just how great they were
"Time for the ultimate change " what a line! Never heard a better bass line.
Kasim can bring it
saw rundgren 2023 and he didnt let me down, he looked lik eme, singin in my room by myslef. validated everything i thought and loved about Todd. a memory ill never let go
Another one of those tunes that evokes strong memories of my latter 20s. Love it!
One of the most underrated songs of all time.
One of the best live bands of all time!
"One of"? Utopia was the ultimate, and one of the very first, progressive rock bands. That alone should have gotten them into the RHOF.
"One of"? Utopia was the ultimate, and one of the very first, progressive rock bands. That alone should have gotten them into the RHOF.
Todd was a genius utopia was so perfect
I've heard this song for years and never realized that Roger Powell sang it. Rockin' song! Four very talented individuals.
As David Bowie said back in the late 1980's... "if Todd Rundgren had bothered to play the record company game, he'd have been a household name". True American music legend.

@@michellerjackson5776 He Has the Brand Of Genius....
What a beautifully written and performed song!
Love this song great chord changes and beautiful harmonies.
Absolute masterful playing all around. Between singing and playing a ton of intricate parts, plus soloing, Todd had his hands full.
this is such a f 'ing great song. I just cant believe how good these guys are. perfect harmonies, excellent musicianship, very creative, and they sound so really good.
Great Band.....So Underrated.
I totally agree
I fkn love Todd’s guitar playing so much.
Excellent version of this GREAT song!!! Damn tight!!!

Great song. It packs a lot of music into one song. Would have loved to be at this concert

Roger Powell goes down in rock history for this one
Wish he was going to be a part of the upcoming reunion.
Jimmy J I wish he could have made it ... I heard at the concert that both arthritis and hearing loss were the reasons ... get well soon, Roger
@@aeropilot4419 in my book Roger Powell in Utopia was equal to Jan Hammer in Mahavishnu Orchestra...played trumpet too
Indeed
TOTally.
they are such great performers
The finest performance on this tour with, perhaps, the exception of the terrific HIROSHIMA!
This was so great to hear again. Hearing it played at the concert was amazing!

Brilliant song, Brilliant Guitar solo, all it needs now is Caravan to pay the compliment back and record a song called Utopia!
lol, Mike! I like the way you think!
David Bowie can issue comments about Todd.Todd has created his own genre of music.Todd fans can enjoy the music.More fans join everyday.
wow ---- very impessive !!! I cant believe how good these guys were !

TODD GOES OFF ON HIS GREEN GUITAR - MAN I MISS ROGER
I remember years ago you could hear this on the radio, before radio began to suck.
Wow, this is priceless footage! Thanks for posting yet again, HR!
Excellent live performance that really shows Todd’s skill on lead guitar
OOOOOooooooooooooooo that last little tasty bite from "Elpee's Worth of Tunes" is an absolute genius treat. Ices this lovely cake. Thanks.

They should've had the pyramid for this show. Now it's on some guy's farm on Buzzard's Bay in Massachusetts.
Bass sounds nice. I'm thinking iit's been remixed/remastered.
Look how young Foamy looks! :~)
Runt also= top-notch back-up singer..
