    You don't have to go to all that trouble. You can enable satnav on MFT using forscan program on laptop via ELM obd adapter .it's fully documented various ford forums

    I acquired a nav module from a local salvage yard. Part number DA5T-14D212-KA, which falls into my vehicle build date. Installed it just like the video showed and when power was applied I had the same exact screen as before. Upper right side of the screen said "Information" instead of navigation. I rechecked the part number with my local dealer, where I used to work at, and it is the correct number.

      Hi Steven,
      I do not have the knowledge to verify whether the part number you supplied does indeed have navigation unlocked. The only way that I know to tell is by searching the VIN of the vehicle the APIM came from to see what the options are/were.
      Unfortunately, if you plugged everything in and it still says "Information", you don't have the feature unlocked.
      I can imagine the frustration- if you don't want to go through all of it again, you can try using FORSCAN to reprogram your APIM to have nav unlocked, but you'll need an OBDII scanner/programmer that can talk to a laptop. If you search for "ford escape forscan navigation" you'll see a long forum thread pop up on Fordescape.org.
      Hope this is helpful- please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks!

    An interesting look at how this system goes together. But I'd recommend doing this only if you can get the APIM and the SD card very, very cheap. The MFT nav system is really not very good. I regret the money I paid for it when I got the car -- I almost always use the phone nav instead.

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  8 лет назад

      +unkilbeeg I was able to pick up an APIM for ~$120 and the maps cards are available for $30ish on eBay.. I didn't think it was too bad for the convenience of not using my cell and killing the battery or having to keep it plugged in and overheat :/ I hear you though.. it's not the snappiest system on the planet.

    Awesome video! I was sold my car and they told me it had NAV, but guess what, nope!!!
    Any ways, do you think i could also upgrade to SYNC 3.0 using this same method? The APIM looks like the entire computer, is this correct?

      +Rion Hiersche Thanks for the complements! Yeah, I was a bit surprised myself when I got mine- led me to experiment a bit haha.
      I have been looking into that on the forums (Sync 3)! It seems that there's been some bridging in the F-150's, but the third party companies charge a premium to conduct the service- no surprise there... Anyhow, I've heard the plugs may be different but I haven't had the chance to see a Sync 3 APIM in person to verify. Hopefully soon!

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  6 лет назад

      Hey Nick- thanks a lot, man! You can do a two of these direct routes - you can search for the trim bezel and MyFord Touch 8'' screen interface/APIM and see if that straight conversion will work. Or, you can go aftermarket and get a system from Crutchfield. They look pretty good and are usually noted to be compatible with Sync or not. Some people even prefer the aftermarket systems to Sync. I can't guarantee that your stereo will be a clean swap to an 8'' MFT screen, but do know that people have done upgrades to aftermarket systems. The aftermarket system may be a bit cheaper in the long run as well as you're not buying ford parts.
      - If you're going to try the oem swap, make sure it's escape to escape. This is from a C-max (DO NOT BUY THIS FOR YOUR ESCAPE, hah.) It hasn't been a clean swap for people in the past. However, just a quick example of what pieces you'd be looking for: www.ebay.com/itm/2013-2014-FORD-C-MAX-RADIO-RECEIVER-8-TOUCHSCREEN-CONTROL-PANEL-CLIMATE-CONTROL/202100040193?epid=1023655799&hash=item2f0e19e201:g:JwQAAOSwBjdZ-Kkd&vxp=mtr
      - If you're going with a crutchfield solution, try one of these: www.crutchfield.com/g_182350/In-dash-GPS-Navigation.html
      When you click on one of the options, (I'd prefer one with no physical buttons so that it looks more suited to be in your dash), you'll see that there's a part of it that says "FIT INFO FOR YOUR FORD- modified fit - see the installation gear that youll need"... this is the kit that will give you the MFT looking bezel as well as the Sync wire harnesses.
      Again, just do your research to see if any aftermarket system you buy is compatible with sync so that you don't lose any capability with your car's accessory system.
      Please let me know if you have any other questions! Thanks for checking out the channel!

    I've got a 2014 Fiesta ST with MFT and no NAV. Any idea whether the APIM has to match the make/model/year or if there's any flexibility? Thanks for the DIY!

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  8 лет назад

      +Ben Sullivan It should- Again, I know for sure that Focuses are cross compatible with Escapes- The Fiesta should be the same- couldn't hurt to try, unless you're worried about warranty voiding. I would say worst case would be you attempt the disassembly and if it doesn't work, you could sell it again? Again, I don't KNOW for sure, but they have to be similar. What type of Sync do you run? Sync 2?

    • @bensullivan
      @bensullivan 8 лет назад +1

      +HowToEscape: Tips and Reviews At this point I'm not too worried about warranty voiding. The vehicle has almost 45k on it and is over two years old. The biggest thing I'm worried about is the cost. I looked on eBay and they are selling for $600-800 for a unit. To me, it's not worth it at that price (obviously) so I'd have to find a unit for

      +Ben Sullivan Yeah it's mind blowing how much people are asking for them now that the word's out on the Nav upgrades... a bit disheartening as people seem to be asking just under what it costs to bring to the dealer for the Nav upgrade... keep an eye out though- you can find a good deal out there... especially on the forums.

    Wheres the best place to find one for my 2013 Escape. How much should i be paying? Do i also need to get a maps card?

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  6 лет назад

      Hi and thanks for asking! You will need a maps card. An APIM for a 2013 Escape can range anywhere from 200-600. A good deal is in the 250-350 range. Anything between 350-500 is an "ok" deal, but pretty expensive. More than 500 is a bit ridiculous and there are aftermarket solutions at that point could would be more appealing for the price point. As for place, you can search eBay, or parts dealers like LKQ. The trick is making sure that the APIM you are buying came from a vehicle with navigation and is Sync 2. Do not buy Sync 3 thinking you can upgrade easily because if you have a 2013 like mine, it will only work with Sync 2 :) Let me know if you have any other questions and thanks again for checking out the channel!

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      Hi Brandon- on the Ford Escape forums, the user "zdogg" posted the part number I believe- "DJ5T-14F239 ".
      Direct quote from his post that's pretty helpful with "...." where info isn't proven yet:
      _________________________
      "It is not too hard to find one on ebay. Unfortunately, most sellers sell the APIM attached to the screen. In some cases, if you ask, they will agree to sell the module only. The APIM is about USD 100-120 and the display + module about USD 200. Later, you could sell the screen on ebay for about USD 100. Keep your old APIM and don't sell it, because when you sell your car you want to have a matching VIN. Otherwise, it looks like the car has been salvaged
      Here are the key words when searching on ebay (check only for used parts-it saves time):
      1. DJ5T-14F239
      Do not get the APIM that starts with DJ1T (this is sync 1 not sync 2). DJ5T is used for Focus, CMAX and Escape... I would stick with CMAX, Escape and maybe focus. Here is a search example Dj5T-14F239 | eBay)
      2. 2013 ford display
      3. ford 8" display
      ....
      ....
      6. Ford sync module
      The most important thing is to ask the seller for the VIN number. Asking the seller if the APIM has a navigation never works They just say yes. Once you have the vin number enter it here researchmaniacs.com/VIN-Number-Lookup/WindowSticker/FordSticker.html?title=1FAHP3M2XCL462182 Look at the window sticker and make sure that the donor car has NAV option and maybe a back up camera. The backup camera would just need somehting like a LockPick cable (not the module) or simply splice pin 14 and 15 of the A/V harness cable (don't do this unless your battery is disconnected and you have a wiring digram) . You would aslo need a camera that connects to your brake lights (USD 19.99).
      You are looking for a metal body APIM not the black plastic one.
      Hope this helps!
      [zdogg]

    If I went to a Junk yard to scavenge for an AIPM with Nav, how would I determine, if I found one, whether or not it has Nav? I think you mentioned VIN number was key? Is there a site or service I can use to help determine this?

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      Hey @Matthew_Aughey- I've been able to find the VIN, and then search the VIN on Google and see which trim level it belonged to. There are all sorts of sites which will supply the basic info on the vehicle and they'll try to get you to buy a whole vehicle history report. I've just used it to see if it's an S, SE, SEL, or Titanium. SOMETIMES, it will list if it includes nav, backup camera, etc. but not always. Most of the time though, if it's SEL or higher, it's likely to have the MFT w Nav. It's been safer to purchase one off the forums or eBay because then you have a seller whom you can ask questions. However, if you're getting one from a junk yard, the price may be low enough that even if it ends up not having Nav for some reason, you're not out too much cash. Hope this helps!

      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      Hey @Kevin! Thanks for the affirmation on the video! As for the SD card, it has the maps programmed into it. So, you need the APIM to have the "unlocked" feature so that the unit is actively displaying the GPS information on your screen, but you need the maps on the SD card. You can find them on eBay pretty easily. I believe they're around A8 now, but when I made this video, I think I had the A6 (and still do). The later versions like A7 and A8 just have updated maps with newly built roads and such. Please let me know if you have any other questions and thanks for checking out the channel!

    I watched ur video on backup camera installation for 2013 escape and it recommended viewing this on changing APIM. Her car does have Nav but no factory camera, do I nee a different APIM to hook up the ebay camera? I noticed at the APIM you installed in this video did not have a RCA(video) port, nor did the one you took out so how is the camera actually connected too the screen? Is there one that does for cars equipped with BU cameras? Great videos and thanks for the detailed information :)

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      Hi @Tom, Thanks for checking out the videos-
      Per your question on the APIMs, there are no APIM units for Sync 2 (that I know of) that have a direct AV output for a camera. That is common in a lot of aftermarket stereo/nav units, but not for the Ford OEM ones... It's in the MFT wire harness in pins 14 and 15 for the two leads from the AV wire as shown in the ebay camera install video. However, the camera I bought didn't have enough length to the AV cord for the way I routed the wire. I ended up adding an extension for that video because I routed it too "round about" and needed extra length. I bought another AV female plug from Radio Shack and then ran the extra length of wire off that and then used the other two bare ends and inserted them into the back of the MFT harness.
      You'll also want to look into getting the proper pins for the wires you're putting into the MFT harness. These pins mate with those of the APIM male pins. You can source them for the gauge wire and they're pretty cheap. You CAN do without them, but it ends up with folding the wire core over itself to make a thick contact area for when the MFT harness is plugged into the APIM.
      Please let me know if you'd like clarification on any thing- I know I struggled a bit with being concise.
      Thanks Tom!

Can you shed some light on how I can confirm the APIM currently in the car will or will not work? If it does need to be replaced how do I know which one to get to replace it? It also has a 110 volt socket right below those RCA ports. Thanks again and sorry for being so naive :)

      Even if your Escape is loaded with the Nav, Sirius, and the RCA ports/110v in the center console, it won't give you access to showing the camera on the screen UNLESS the feature is unlocked from the factory- for example, In the "backup camera installation" video on the channel, the test with the APIM is to turn on the car and put it in reverse and hold the brake to keep from going anywhere. IF the camera feature is unlocked from the factory, it will be looking for the camera and bring up the dialogue box that it can't connect to it. That's your sign that it's ready to be connected via the wires/routing from back to front.
      To find an APIM that HAS the camera feature unlocked would involve searching eBay, Craigslist, salvage yard, or another semi-local source to find one with vehicle info like the VIN. If you have the info from the vehicle, you will most likely be able to see the trim options that came with that vehicle. I do not know a better way than that though- other than surfing the forums like blue oval forums or fordescape.org.
      ***One thing to note*** If you actively use Sirius, this may not be of interest to you- I've recently found out that my transplanted APIM connects and disconnects to the previous user's Sirius account- it lasts for a few days and then goes away- I don't really know what to do about it as I no longer have the gentleman's contact info. I'm just saying that IF you currently have a subscription, it may get hairy to carry it over to a new APIM because I believe they do it by VIN. BUT if your VIN stays the same, but the transplanted APIM is associated with ANOTHER VIN, it may hiccup like mine is. There is a MAC address if you go into the settings once the APIM is installed which may clarify with SIRIUS, but I can't guarantee that would work and I would hate for you to lose that from my spotty experience.
      Just wanted to throw that out there- I hope this clarifies some things!

      Thank you so much for your answer... I did find a way using software called fortran to uhlock the feature. I just need to get the OBD adapter I think it called that allows you to connect your Laptop to the cars computer and APIM. Appreciatte all your help thx again... Your videos are excellent. :) The ony thin we use from Sirius is the traffic feature and since I'll be unlocking and not changing the APIM I think I'll be ok. I'lll let ya know how it goes...

    Hey,
    I have a 2009 F150 Platinum with original sync system or the "sync with voice activated navigation". I am looking to see if it's possible to upgrade the unit to Sync 2. Will this APIM do that ?
    Thanks

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      Hey Dill, I'm not totally sure- are you going from the 4'' screen to the 8''? I think the whole module has to swap over- is this the case?

    • @dillonsmith5278
      @dillonsmith5278 7 лет назад +1

      I have the 8" screen with the "voice activated sync". I am looking to just pull out my sync 1 system and put in the one that is displayed in the video (version 2)
      Thanks for your reply

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      Hey again Dill, if you have the 8'' touch screen, I believe you have Sync 2 already- check out this link:
      www.sandicliffe.co.uk/blog/we-share-the-differences-with-ford-sync-vs-sync-2
      If you are already running Sync 2, an APIM from any other Sync 2 system of your vehicle with the features unlocked should do the trick.
      I hope I answered your question- if not, please let me know and we can keep diving in.
      Thanks!

      The same principle should apply! Just make sure you have an APIM that works for your Edge. I believe that C-Max, Escape, and Focus are cross-compatible, but the Edge may have its own size and/or pinout. Let us know what you find out if you decide to try it!

    Good Morning.
    I have a Ford Taurus SEL 2013, with the same SYNC MYFORD system as that ESCAPE. It turns out that I had to change the SYNC module and this new module also comes with the option of a reversing camera. When I install it everything works perfectly, but it tells me that the "911" function is not active and that I must go to the dealer for its configuration.
    Please, could you tell me how to enter the system to modify it, and activate and then deactivate the option of "911 assistant" according to the steps of the screen but it still indicates that "911 assistance is not working to contact the dealer" .
    I remain attentive to your comments. Thank you.

      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  6 лет назад

      Hey Eli, I've never heard of that being done, but I wouldn't say it's impossible- moreso very very difficult to pull off since you'd need EVERYTHING in the system to have all of the benefits of the Sync interface. We're talking all the wire harnesses, gps antenna, everything needed for Sync to find so that no error codes are thrown, etc.
      Instead of me being a negative nancy, what did you buy that you consider the "whole setup"?

    I just installed a used 2016 Explorer APIM with Navigation in my 2014 Explorer that did not have Navigation, the navigation is working great. Unfortunately the phone button on my steering wheel is not working and the heated seats are not working now, any suggestions?

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  6 лет назад

      Hi Bruce, Sorry about that- not totally sure why that could be happening but are you sure it's still Sync 2 and not a new Sync 3 module? I am familiar with Escape APIMs and know that the screen and module sizing is different between Syncs 2 and 3 but don't know how the sizing may vary with Explorers.
      If that's not the issue, then I'd try disconnecting and reconnecting with the battery disconnected for 10 minutes at least to allow for a full module reset. Easiest first.
      If THAT doesn't work, check out the wire harness and pins to make sure any contacts are broken or bent.
      Hopefully this is helpful! If not, let me know and we can keep on it.

    • @stidpgzup1675
      @stidpgzup1675 6 лет назад

      Hi,
      I didn't think about the Sync 2 and Sync 3 as being an issue, the screen and APIM module are the same size. I will try disconnecting the wires and reattaching as well as disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes. I just don't understand what the issue is, I realized that I can control the Climate controls by the manual buttons; but I cannot control any Climate controls on the screen. I cannot even turn the Climate control power button on from the screen!!

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  6 лет назад

      Yeah man, I could see how that would be really frustrating. DID you go from Sync 2 to Sync 3??? Because IF that's the case, it's most likely the culprit.

    • @stidpgzup1675
      @stidpgzup1675 6 лет назад +1

      So I just verified that the APIM that I purchased is a Sync 2. I have tried a master reset and this does not fix the issues. I put my old APIM back in and everything works fine, its not a connection issue!!

      Wow- yeah it sounds like you did all the sensible things to diagnose... It appears that unless there's something else we haven't touched on, your 2016 apim may be a bad apple :/ There IS a way to reprogram and unlock the nav in your 2014 using FORSCAN. It's a software used to talk to and reprogram your vehicle configurations. You need an OBDII scanner/programmer that can sync with your laptop and to download the software. All in, you're probably looking at a few hours to research the procedure, and $100 for a good OBDII bluetooth scanner/programmer. I know people have done it with the Escape, as well as F150. The Explorer should be doable as well!
      I know it's not what you originally wanted to do when you did the work to source your '16 APIM, but it's another option. Just try googling "FORSCAN Ford Explorer navigation". It will probably get you to a forum page where people are working on it :)

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  7 лет назад

      If you have a 2017, you'll have Sync 3. I don't have any experience in Sync 3 yet, as my vehicle is a '13... However, the principle may still be the same if you can get your hands on another Sync 3 APIM with navigation. I imagine they'd be fairly hard to come by if they're so new though. Not sure on the cost either, but they'll probably come down over time like all other tech. I wish I could help you more on it- let me know if you have any other questions please!

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  8 лет назад

      +Someone'sHero Check this link out- you enter your vehicle and the type of media interface in your Ford/Lincoln: owner.ford.com/how-tos/sync-technology/all/setup/how-to-identify-your-sync-version.html Scroll down and match up which interface you have. If you have the Titanium, you most likely have the MFT, so that would be Sync 2. Sync 1 is Sync Basic I believe. Sync 2 is Sync w MFT w or w/o Nav, and Sync 3 is the whole shebang in the newest vehicles. Hope this helps!

      I know the focus and escape can cross over just fine. I don't know for sure if anybody has done it with an explorer. I know some had issues trying it with a Cmax. I believe the screen size has to be the same along with the sync version! There may be other parameters as well...

      Today I replaced my dead APIM with an used one from ebay. Works fine, I noticed the temp is not showing for some reason, but at least I get my radio back and control of rear AC. Now, I ran a health check and when I log in it doesnt give me the option to upgrade de SW. The replacement is running 4.29 where my old one was on ver 3. and was the latest. I think mysync still thinks I have the old APIM based on the VIN #. any ideas on how I can get my hands on sync updates? Thanks!

    • @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews
      @HowToEscapeDIYTipsandReviews  8 лет назад

      Would you by any chance have the VIN of the car you bought the new APIM for? I'm not entirely sure on how certain updates work with the APIM yet- still learning. It's a bit of an effort, and more for learning purposes, but if it IS VIN sensitive, perhaps try creating another Syncmyride account with the new VIN and try to upload the Update via SD as is standard? What are your thoughts on this? I have my '13 Escape, but imagine updates behave similarly across models as it would seem to be Ford protocol... hmmm I wish I had a better solution for ya :/

      My 2014 Edge Limited had v3.6 and said no updates available. I searched and searched and found two newer versions, I updated to what was said to be v3.8 but after the install it shows in my radio to be v3.08. I have read that its not possible to down grade.
      So I do not know if its a typo someplace.

      Yes- so long as your 8in Sync 2 unit says "Navigation" and not "information", your navigation feature is unlocked and just needs the Maps SD card. The latest maps card is "A12" I believe but there may be a later version out now. You can search Amazon or eBay for "Sync 2 Maps SD card".

      Hey bluecor, I can't answer that for sure... as XM is subscription based on vin, it may...
