Jeff, well done. I am a 2015 Sierra Denali owner and you clarified a lot. Essentially, very little change other than Onstar Remote services. (Yes, I had this free for five years). As for charge for phone services, even in 2015, they had give the truck a phone number (which I never used) Some Car manufacturers are looking for ways to milk the system, that is why there is a lot of concern. I believe it is Audi/Porsche that is charging owners with a subscription to use APPLE CARPLAY/ANDROID - which is total bull because in that case, your in car display is simply an extension of your phone.

The one thing I'd like to add is, and I'm going half off brand, but, in comparison, I have heard that, with Fords, I don't even know if there's a subscription base at all, since it's all linked via Bluetooth from your phone only, which, in my opinion is much better, as the vehicle still detects any devices paired, and having the automatic crash response directly to 911 to me is priceless for anyone in the family, not just the kids. The antenna up top also boosts your phones signal strength, so even out in very remote areas, I'd see a much better response, other than satellite which would be about as good as you could get. While I like the thought behind the apps, I don't think it's fair to charge customers from one brand, while others don't. I am pretty sure a family member of mine doesn't have to pay a subscription to remote start his f250 from his phone app on that or his older dodge ram either, so why should I pay for that on my Sierra? The app is not limited to close proximity from what I've heard, unlike the physical key fob. Thank you for the great video Jeff.

Just bought a new refreshed Chevy Silverado and appreciate the details in this RUclips video. The price I am being quoted for unlimited data access only (no Onstar services) plan is $25 a month which keeps the my google maps and assistant running and gives a wifi hotspot, etc. Jeff’s posting notes that I could use apply car play to run maps and apps on CarPlay but not sure if this works seamlessly. I hate having dead buttons on a new vehicle that I pay top dollar for, so i may get the $25 a month unlimited data plan.

You say that gm isn't charging for the subscriptions the price of the vehicle to give you the option. They're charging you monthly now so they will make more in the long run with a repetitive fee vs a one time charge. This will generate a stable revenue for them, no thanks!

To me personally it’s nickel and dime me for the app. Yes as you said it’s in included in the comps purchase price. I see as we go EV that revenue will drop is my guess so they need to generate more revenue, but this too me is a poor decision and as I was considering a new truck that extra cost I will use too discount the sale price because it’s something I will want for how ever long I own my truck and will not want to be paying additional for it.
Long term imo it will be a bigger issue to them if the company still offers it for free. Probably not a deal breaker but a bad small business decision.

  • @hammer-r
    @hammer-r Год назад

Tks for the video. Clears up some of the stuff, but still confused a bit. I just bought a Silverado and was inundated with apps and subscriptions all while trying to learn the truck while, the salesman was talking. My question to you is, is the my Chevy app tied to the onstar service? Those features of the my Chevy app used to be on the onstar in my older avalanche (vehicle locate, start, stop and lock) I’m just trying to figure out in the near future, when this stuff stops working and requires a paid plan, what do I need and can expect from onstar. I understand the my Chevy app will allow me to do those items on that app for three years. But the onstar is only good for either 1 or 3 months, still not clear. So when onstar stops what of the my Chevy app will work.
Another question, if I chose to not use onstar, I will have no data correct? But I can link my apple phone to the vehicle (which it already is) and use the phones data. And have relatively the same data performance on the vehicle. I guess I also need to to talk to onstar and see what the packages are in the future. I used to be able to negotiate a better rate for my avalanche, but I fear those days with the new truck are over. Tks again for the video and the help.

Thanks for the video. I was hoping it would answer a question for me but it did not. I just bought a new Silverado LTZ late last year. I have an active OnStar subscription but did not opt for a data plan because I have unlimited data on my phone. I assume my trial data plan is expired. However, my speed sign display no longer displays the speed limit on roads. Is this because it requires a data subscription? If not, any idea why it would stop working? If so, since I see that the truck can also connect to an external Wi-Fi, can we connect to our phone's hotspot and use subscription services over that data? And if we cannot do that, what really is the purpose/advantage of being able to connect the truck to an external Wi-Fi connection?
I have not been able to get straight answers to my questions. I called OnStar but after being passed around to 3 different people, I hung up. I have posted in online forums and get as many people tell me I don't need a subscription as tell me I do need one. I had one person tell me they don't have a data plan but they do connect to their phone hotspot and their speed sign display works fine. Very confusing. I connected my truck to my phone and went on a short drive but I am still not seeing any speed limits display.

I've got 2022 Sierra and from what I've figured out I have to have active subscription for that neat speed limit sign on main dash to work. However, having subscription alone doesn't make it work as I turned unlimited data on for a trip from TX to FL and it didn't work most of the time... which I think means it's also tied to offline maps that apparently for me weren't constantly updating on my trip as once I was 100 miles or so from home mysteriously started working again. Apple maps and Waze both show speed limit through phone so there's a work around but I really wish it always worked without a monthly fee because it is super useful.

Not quite true for me. When my subscr0iption ran out after 30 days a lot of the truck systems crashed. maps gone Bluetooth still works if i use my phone but all the steering wheel Bluetooth controls stopped working. maps stopped working. the phone operators told me to see dealer as it should work.
The Dealer told me that on the new trucks that have a lot of extras you must have data to make them work including steering wheel Bluetooth controls, after hours on the phone they gave me a $10.00 (discount from fourteen dollars) data plan... 20 minutes later everything works again. It sucks to pay 80 thousand dollars on a truck then have to pay 10.00 a mouth to use it. Also android auto sucks, once i started it i had to turn it off to use the radio. had to delete app from my phone to use the radio. Other than that i love the truck.

This has been coming for years and now it's here. The good thing is that there's a good chance that you can extend your vehicle's life since everyone is incented to keep the apps and data current and there's no reason they can't add new app features over time. GM's biggest problem is that they have no culture for direct to consumer service and so they will probably fail to meet expectations. The communication with GM on my ordering process is mystifying as they inform me of status changes that mean nothing and completely ignore what I want to know. If they don't improve in this area then their new services business will fail. That's the real risk for everyone including us consumers investing in their platform.

That’s such bs that ford includes their app price in the price on their trucks. All of these trucks are expensive enough they should include basic features in the app with the price of the car at the current price. Our Tesla has this and the only thing we pay for is data to the car which is expected. All legacy auto has been behind on tech for years. The fact that they’re just adding Google maps within the last two years is mine boggling. Side note: I’m not just a Tesla owner. I also own a refreshed 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4.

    Phones do navigation better,
Heated seats do not last long in anybody auto, those who reside below the Mason Dixon line do not need them.

Bought a Sierra AT4X full MSRP in August 2022. Asked enough questions to understand t what I would be getting before I signed the check but I like the truck parts of this truck so I bought it. That said however, this mish mash of free/not free/free for awhile honestly makes me dislike this truck every single time I get in it.
The idea of a subscription for basic onboard navigation in a $100k truck is infuriating. Especially when you know that there is constant dataflow between gm and the truck for their benefits. Yes I can afford the subscription but I would never subscribe for any reason regardless of features just on the principal of having paid enough already.
Love the ridiculous comment in the video that somehow there is a, “discount” in the price of the vehicle to not have this feature that I can choose to buy through subscription. Yeah okay. Apple Maps is good but like someone else here has said it only uses part of the screen.
Even old Jeff here seems to lack conviction. You can kind of tell that he feels like it’s a bit of a rip off but is trying his best to say hey guys it’s not that bad but doesn’t really buy it himself.
Anyway, it’s not like I’ll ever buy a ford or a dodge (I’m not insane) but I really wish my vehicle didn’t have this disappointment machine built into it. It really takes away from how I feel about the truck - I just want to own all of it and not have to continue to feed gm money to use everything I feel like I have paid for.
    Cheers dudes

First off, people are just plain stupid. Some of that is so obvious it's pathetic. And we wonder why the US and Canada are in the shape they are in. However, when someone pays $50k for a vehicle and GM says that they aren't automatically adding features that other companies are as a measure to keep costs down, that's a pretty tough pill to swallow. GM had better be keeping up with other companies with add on features, and still be competitive, or they can just as well close up shop.
Quick question though... Say your vehicle is stolen, what capabilities do you have through GM to locate it or possibly even have it put into limp mode even if you're not an OnStar subscriber?

stupid to not build the subscription into the price or at least give the customer a free year of it since the other brands just build into price.

      Breakdown
On Star free 2 month trial
XM/Sirius believe 3 month free trial
There’s a 3 year built in free subscription for the the original owner using the Google maps data plan (which is a built in cellular/wifi hotspot that supports up to 7 devices.
(Not sure if that transfers to 2nd owner if you were to trade in.)
Then monthly. Data rates plans iiiiiffff you choose to and want the Google map feature and the my gmc app features
$14.99 for my gmc/on star another $10 for a grand total of 24.99 month includes my gmc/on star features and the Google data plan. (No at this time you can’t just add a data plan)

Be glad you dont own a Toyota or Honda.Monthly charge for remote start.🤑🥴

@Jon B - do you mean for remote start on the keyfob Toyota and Honda are charging monthly?
for what I will call remote start (IE your phone and app to start vehicle from anywhere you have an internet connection) there is a monthly charge on my 2021 GMC Sierra Denali 3500HD through OnStar. To use the keyfob remote with very limited range (basically vehicle has to be within eye sight) there isn't a charge, although in Canada during the winter months a diesel vehicle doesn't warm up in the time it takes to walk to vehicle when it's in eye sight at the point of hitting the start button on the keyfob remote.

Dumbest one is the speed limit sign display on the new trucks. If you don’t have a data plan on the truck it will not display speed limit in the full LED gauge cluster. You just get a blank speed limit sign and can’t make it go away.

Hmmm. There is a setting in the information screen to turn off the white speed limit sign on the new 12” gauge display. There’s a separate setting for HUD equipped trucks to turn off the speed limit sign within the HUD. Mine keeps reappearing after changing that HID setting.
Give your 2022 a look again for that setting. It’s in owners Manual too

@@4961Studebaker thanks that’s good info. At least I can turn it off so I am not reminded how cheap I am to not pay for a data plan :)

On my 2020 2500hd the speed limit for the gauge cluster will not stay turned off. When the speed limit on the road changes, it turns back on. The check box in settings is still unchecked. The heads up speed limit turns on amd off properly. I suspect my truck has a glitch.

All the talk of chip shortages and paid features makes me very happy i was able to find my truck during the middle of 2020 and pay 6 grand less than the list of $74k. There were only 3 white fully loaded trucks within 500 miles of me.

Android Auto and Apple Car play drains your phones battery insanely fast and cuts part of the screen... I shouldn't have to pay per month to use a basic feature like maps in my truck specially after spending 58K for it, spotify I get it.
Ford has both maps and remote start from phone for free... why couldn't you do that for free as well? OnStar is a disgrace to GM and I'm a supplier for GM and all major US automotive brands
