      I drive an old school 4Runner, that is all I need. Prices for new vehicles are sky high and not worth it. Lots of people are going to get above their head in debt exactly at the same time gas prices are rising and the economy crashing.

    This really saved me as I was considering a Silverado ZR2 and the dealer won't tell you and Chevy sure won't tell you that you need a data plan to use all the features to the truck.

I can seet this for connected things like the hotspot, traffic, Sirius XM radio.       Monthly payments is for services provided by other companies. Which do/would cost GM money if they were to offer it for free. So yes justifiable.
      Wifi is AT&T and remote features is Onstar. Yea a GM company. They staff 24/7 people that keep that service protecting you similar to a home alarm system; they will call you if you get in an accident and more features that have to be developed and maintained. It's common sense how those services work. 🙄

    As an additional note, if you have to go through a third party service for these options and features, that third party service can fully shut off your access to that vehicle/item/device at their leisure essentially holding you hostage from your purchase.

    I recently purchased a 2023 Silverado. The salesman tried to get me to install the Chevy app. When I found out there was a monthly fee, I refused. I don't use the google map everyday. So I purchased a Garmin Smart Drive with free lifetime map updates and will use it as needed. And I didn't subscribe to Sirius XM. I have the app on my phone and listen to music through this app. I do not believe I should have to pay to use something I purchased when I bought the vehicle. It appears that Google & GM have teamed up together to nickle and dime their customers for every penny they can get and still expect brand loyalty...Not from me. Next time I will consider buying from those who value their customers!

    Toyota did the same thing on my 2020 Tundra, pay to play.
    I drew the line when after 1 year after I did not continue to subscribe to the app, my key fob remote start stopped working. Not just the Toyota app, but the actual key fob. I took out the Toyota JBL POS infotainment garbage and installed a decent stereo, new speakers, amps etc... and a remote start. Zero monthly fees, suck it Toyota.

      We have a 2019 Tacoma and the infotainment system is complete garbage. Tried using the app to connect and it never worked, at all. Connected via bluetooth and it works most of the time. We'll go through these random spurts where our phones will disconnect during calls or won't connect to the infotainment system at all.

    I felt your pain. When Chevy tried to charge me for monthly services on my 2021 Colorado it was an easy decision. No! I bought a cable and Apple CarPlay provides everything I require. The integration of CarPlay should be improved on all vehicles. All manufacturers need a consumer review board to slap engineer’s on the side on the head and “ask what are you thinking?”

    The subscription model has been preached to every sales team in the world for years now. It gets better cash flow for the business and makes it sticky for customers to leave. This is not about better service. It is about trapping customers in an endless loop they cannot escape. I used to teach the subscription model, I know what it is intended to do.

      It really is a shame. For me, it started yeara ago when various industry software players glamced at the then rising mobile market....
      Then we had to pay monthly or yearly for the Adobe Suit, and the like
      And now our cars are making us pay for features, some of which are entirely hardware side which you had choose to include and pay for up front.
      It's a terrible path we've gone down, especially when some of the software side features already exist in our pockets

      I was an IT guy for 30 years. I fought moving from purchasing software to subscription for years. I was probably the last customer my vendors moved to the subscription model. I 100% agree with you.

    I bought my new Silverado in January, the On Star folks was wanting $50 a month, this included phone app remote, and WiFi. I said no thanks, I’ll use my keyfob and cell phone like I have for years.

      @@MrFreebirdIII It's funny because the 4G "wifi" they put in these vehicle is booty anyway. CarPlay exists (or some variant) so pushing from the phone to the infotainment screen isn't an issue. I don't really care if some Hindu from OnStar is on tap to fail to answer my questions in an intelligible manner.

    My dad was going to buy a new Tundra until they started talking about their monthly fee BULL&#!*. So for like $15 a month they lost a $60k sale...sounds like a horrible practice. He bought a F-150 instead.

      @@markboozer3234 the remote unlock is for using your phone. Your key still works. But it costs money to have servers up so that you can use your phone to unlock and start your car from anywhere.

      You just answered your own question.
      If a consumer is willing to grossly overpay for a vehicle that has 20-30k of profit for the manufacturer, then that same consumer will be will to pay for all the features.
      I'm still baffled that how many people are happily willing to make payments on their phone for example, and then add plenty of monthly subscription services indenturing themselves even further.

    I guess I’m keeping my old truck a few more years. There’s no way I’m paying $50-$80k and then $$$ on top of that to use it. Complete BS. I hope they figure it out before they get crushed by companies that can deliver real customer value. Sad because I was seriously interested in the new Silverado. They seem to have no idea why people are keeping their vehicles longer. It’s this type of BS.

    I have two gm vehicles and I pay for onstar remote plans for both. I pay for the year when they offer a discount (usually about 120 a vehicle) because I like all the services offered, like being able to get diagnostic information and alerts if something is wrong, remote starting from anywhere in the world (we park in long term lots when we travel and start our vehicles one or twice to make sure the battery doesn't die due to us having dashcam) I wouldn't pay for self driving or other features though.

    They should make an option where all of those connectivity options are removed, including the hardware. The more apps and internet connectivity a vehicle has, the less inclined I am to buy it.

      ​@@danlane2547 they make a base model truck that is the old interior from last year without all the high tech stuff. The models I remember having the old interior are WT, CUSTOM, CUSTOM TRAIL BOSS. They do not make a ZR2 version with basic interior.

Bluetooth is almost too much, although I do tend to use it often. I know it's a bit unreasonable with all the push to add tech. I just don't want any of it. I do appreciate the info though.

      @@danlane2547 Figured I'd put this out there.. I'm like you in the sense that I don't like modern vehicle's over-computerized options. For around $30,000- $50,000 a person can buy and restromod an older truck (am doing this myself) to very good condition and add the modern features that they want (media screens, digital dash, etc.) without those things being so "ingrained" into the vehicle. Mine will have a modern interior kept seperate from the functional aspects, a motor that is not controlled by computers (i.e. a 70's motor without fuel injection) and will not be suceptible to remote shut off, meddling, etc., in case of things getting ugly, politically speaking. I wanted a truck that could survive the loss of all computers on board and still operate. I'm doing this because I am wary of the motives behind big corporations and the current government. There is a very real possibility of a future time when people could be controlled by their electronics and pressed into ways of living which they cannot resist because most things that they own could be shut off or modified by a computer somewhere, at a whim. I currently install high end kitchen appliances for my job and have recently found elderly people accidently buying expensive smart ovens and then figuring out that certain features are inaccessable without creating an account and connecting their phone to the manufacturer's app.

    The app can be handy. My package was delivered and I was worried as most people are these days lol, I called my neighbor and asked him to retrieve it for me and I unlocked my truck and he placed it it in there for me. Other than starting the truck from inside the store and letting the ac run until I get there it's not worth it. It's useful in some cases but I rarely use the app, but the unlimited data is good to have for the kids on the road

    I just purchased a 23 model and I’m completely scratching my head. I’ve already paid 60k plus for the truck and if the features are included, it should be all inclusive since I’ve paid nearly double what the truck is built for anyway. FYI if you have a newer model phone you can tether it to the vehicle and get all the same services for one cost from your phone company. Food for thought.

    As someone who doesn't live in the US, this whole.paying for something extra in a car makes absolutely no sense. I just don't get it. I understood onstar a few years back, you pay for it montly, in the event of a crash the vehicle contacts the authorities quickly and automatically. That makes sense. Anything else is just bs, really. Specially since here in Mexico, anybody looking at vehicles with those features will probably have a pretty nice phone and data plan that can do all of those things for "free".

    I have a 2016 Equinox LT that I got new and it came with a remote start key. My question is on this ZR2 will the remote start key stop working after the subscription runs out? Also wondering if it has built in regular GPS and if so will that still work after the subscription is over? Great videos as always.

    This new Chevrolet truck really peaked my interest. Went to local dealer and priced at 70k then dealer has a 10k markup now it seems manufacturer wants monthly fee for services. Talk about buzz kill left dealer like heck with this now like if I am not going to own the features on the vehicle then look elsewhere and for much cheaper vehicle.

      @@rogern5368 Oops, maybe I mispoke. The app stopped being able to remote start after 4 years of ownership. The Key Fob still works but of course I have to physically put that into the ignition. Bummer since I live in a cold area and liked the remote start .

    When I bought my 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 new, I bought all of it (yearly) + Sirius XM (yearly). However, I don't have the badazz new interior and screen on the 2022 models. I use the Sirius XM more than anything else and most of the time my phone to navigate. I have the unlimited WiFi deal too...which is basically for backup. I did use it (4G LTE) and it was surprisingly good. What some people don't know is that all these services have discounts and promos too. So, that can help with costs. I think they're good to have...esp, if you live out in the sticks or back country.

    What really sucks is you can’t tell where one plan starts and one stops and for how long. You are correct that GM has a lot to learn on simplification. They make it very confusing. And the dealer is of no help. They just want your money for the vehicle. The rest is up to you to figure out. So when these things stop working I’ll just deal with it and see one at a time what’s necessary and what isn’t.

    I will be upgrading to my next truck sooner rather than later so I can pick a model to avoid these subscriptions. I will pick a lower trim if necessary. I hope manufacturers pay attention to all of the pushback against subscriptions posted on these types of videos… thanks for the video.

    I just returned a 2022 Toyota to the dealer, that I had waited 3 months to get. I found all these added features were annoying and irritating. I don't want my car to message my phone because I left it unlocked while bringing groceries into the house.

    Earlier this year, GM stopped online services support for my 2014 Chevy Volt. They weren't going to cancel my OnStar subscription but they also weren't going to offer me anything worth paying for, so I canceled the subscription. I don't miss it.

    These montly plans have already been available, just under different names/programs from GM.
    OnStar was a monthly payment since it started. It offered remote features by app on the phone, crash/location/theft notification and call, diagnostic, status checks, etc.
    The data service plan has been available for a decade now.
    In essence, you're saving money with this new plan.

    I am thankful for this channel and others for covering these topics because I appreciate my old truck with a key and column shifter that much more. I may like looking at the new trucks but their upfront and ongoing costs do not sit well with me.

      I have a 2002 Ram 2500. I put an Android Auto touch screen with a firestick in it. Then I put a cheap old tablet on my visor with bunge cord. I have more tech in this old truck than any new car comes with. And I can get a key made at the local hardware store for a couple of bucks.

      @@Lo0die3 new trucks won’t be maintenance free either. I have a 20 year old truck and a 30 year old truck. The 20 year old diesel probably averages 1000 a year in maintenance including oil changes and fuel filters and I keep my truck functionally immaculate. And the 30 year old truck hasn’t cost me the 1200 that I bought it for in 8 years of abuse. The biggest expense was a blown transmission that was 200 dollars and a Saturday afternoon.

    The only thing that appeals to me in the data, because you can get wifi access in spots where my phone can't, which is helpful on road trips in our of city areas. But I don't do those trips enough to justify the prices

    The prices seem to be negotiable. In my 2018 Silverado, I was paying $7.00 a month for the remote access. Even that wasn't worth it and I ended up canceling it.

    Not paying additional for "services" My wife and I have VW Tiguans and they sell them with included basic features like GPS locate, lock/unlock, remote start(vehicles has to support it), horn honk/flash lights for I believe 4 years. The extra is for data and real-time GPS/theft support, I believe. With the advent of Android Auto/Apple Carplay I don't know why anyone would want navigation that is not standalone(e.g. on disk/hdd) Our cells can do all that navigation the only benefit would be an offline capability like the old navigation systems used provide.

    Traded my ZR2 Colorado for an F150 back in October. The GM app was absolutely useless. Not only is the ford app free, it’s a million times better. I can schedule the truck to start at 7:50 on weekdays, and, I can actually start the truck, or lock/unlock straight from my Apple Watch. With the Chevy app, you had to unlock your phone, wait for the app to load, put in ANOTHER password (granted, with Face ID… but cmon) and THEN start the truck… and it only worked about half the time, but that part could have just been my experience with it… Regardless… unacceptable honestly.

      This! My 2019 Trail Boss had lifter issues at 4k miles and again at 6k miles!! It was by far the worst truck I've ever owned. I traded the truck in for a 2021 F150 Tremor and I absolutely love it. you're right about the app! I love how I can schedule for my truck to be on 10 minutes before I leave for work and how I can turn on the truck from my Apple watch in my office as I am leaving work. It's awesome!

    Nope, not willing to pay anything beyond the cost of my vehicle. IF I spend an x amount of dollars for an option such as navigation then that money is spent and I will not pay monthly to use that PAID for option. Ridiculous

    A hard fail for me on ongoing features payments. As much as the Chevy already cost, I find that appalling but glad you posted this. Corporations seem to not want anyone to flat out own anything any longer as their new ongoing cash cow. I can now completely disregard this vehicle all together

    I think the subscription services for many of these options that you buy such as remote start and if they go as far as heated seats, is ridiculous, the only way they're managing the subscriptions is to wireless services, I just had to update my home security system because they don't support 3G anymore, just think about trying to sell a truck 10 years down the road that has 4G or 3G connectivity and you can't get your heated seats to work anymore because it's outdated and they won't retrofit the truck to support the latest wireless technology, you are screwed and you won't get anything for your truck. This is where we're heading and it's absolutely ridiculous, I won't be paying for this shit

      This exact thing happened to me and my 2016 Jeep Cherokee. The cellular service that all of those services were based on was sprint. With the network gone, it no longer works. So I paid for a capability that no longer works. I didn't pay for the network. So just to say "hey sorry that will no longer work" is not a sufficient answer. The value of my vehicle has now been reduced by no fault of mine. They should be rebating me money for the crap that is now just weighing down my vehicle costing me reduced gas mileage.

    Can confirm you absolutely do not need to purchase the data plan service for the Google suite to work. As for the OnStar features… nice to have but I haven’t used it much. All you need to do is use your phone as a Hot Spot. This will bypass the data plan feature and the system works just fine alongside wireless Apple Car Play. They also fixed the website plans. Cheers!

    Yes their website is confusing. But having to pay for unlimited data in your car isn't new. That's like saying I should have free unlimited data for buying a cellphone. Every other "feature" you mentioned is a connected app or service. Ford charges $20/m, Ram charges $15/m. Use Android auto/ carplay and the key fob and you have pretty much the same "features". Older vehicles with built in maps required you to buy a SD card for the map data, that was like $150+ in some cases. BMW wanted to charge monthly for heated seats. Now that's something I don't understand.

    One of my vehicles is a Hyundai Santa Fe and I remember when I bought it years ago they included things like remote start for free for a year and then wanted to charge for it after that and I just refused. It was just purposely cumbersome where you had to log in and start it via an app when it could be just done with a button on the remote. Another reason I passed on it was that when the garage door is closed often the signal from the satellite to start it wouldn't get through, whereas once again with a remote on a key fob, that would not be an issue. On a side note I just added up all my little BS monthly subscriptions like Netflix, multiple Apple things, Hydrow etc etc and it was over $150, not super thrilled about that.

      Remote start is just a waste of gas anyway unless you live in an area where it routinely goes well below 0degF. Even at that temp the small cars I've always had have put out decent heat after the first mile or so.

      I only use remote start in the summer for the A/C. Using remote start In the winter time is a waste of gas and is bad for the engine

    I had a friend who is a detailer buffing my 2019 while I was working. He needed access to the inside so i set up the remote access plan. Then called and negotiated the price to $9.00 a month. That’s the lowest I could get them to go.

    i was looking at buying a 2023 chevy bolt and getting super cruise, come to find out you have to pay about 2300 to get it in your car and then pay a monthly fee on top of it. they did say you get the service for free but did not tell me for how long. the dealer didnt know. the 2022 model clearly says you get it for 3 years on the window sticker but the 2023 model sticker does not say that. so who knows. im very frustrated and will never pay a monthly fee for something i already paid dearly for up front.

    This is being introduced in my opinion because once electric cars become more popular, the dealers will need a way to keep collecting money from the consumer since there won’t be as much routine maintenance to perform.

      But they forget, there is a network of aftermarket parts, which once bought is owned.
      Half the crap can be swapped out for aftermarket items such as heated seats, new head unit with built in navigation, this monthly sub crap should be illegal.

      Dealerships aren’t gonna be around for long. Rivian and Tesla will prove it once legislators allow certain states to have their citizens buy from the manufacturer. GA being prime example.

    Great video Tommy, thanks for the info. My 2016 F250 is coming up on 300k miles and I’m thinking about something new. If companies are charging for stuff that’s cool but not really needed maybe I’ll just get the tranny rebuilt and the drivers seat reupholstered then drive mine another 6 years.

    We own a 2019 GM vehicle and do not pay for services due to the high cost and low return. I also agree that setting up OnStar additional services has become confusing and not worth the effort.

      When my wife was driving a hundred mile round trip to work every day we used Onstar so I could be aware of her location in bad weather. When she retired we retired Onstar. Haven’t missed it.

    Salesman here at a franchise Chevy store. Here in upstate NY we get a bunch of people that’ll get the remote link app for the winter and thats it. Everyone has a smart phone so they use android auto, or apple car play. Not a big seller from someone here on the front lines.

    I have zero desire to sign in to my truck, pay a monthly fee for any feature, etc. The new Tundra has this issue as well. Another reason to take care of and keep my Land Cruiser for ever.

    I like that makes the vehicle easier to drive safe for the drive. Cameras help blindspot sensors. Radar detection just safety. Take away the trauma. I’m going down the road. Don’t need entertainment don’t need anything that I can get when I am not driving.don’t need to drink or eat in a vehicle. Surprised they haven’t put a restaurant in a car yet. I like navigation, but you have it on your phone already. It can talk to you without looking at a screen. If you are taking your attention away from the road it doesn’t make it safer. If it offers autonomous driving, it should be standard.

    I bought a 2020 High Country and loved the app for the first free year. Was really turned off when I found that being able to start my truck would start costing me $15/mo.
    I spent north of $60k for my truck, and this scam leaves a very bad taste in my mouth

      Can you remote start it with the key? Or are you far away from the truck?
      My ford remote starts from the key much further away than the key recognizes (it flashes a light to say if it worked or not... It'll flash start failed even though it worked!)..
      I used to work in a large office where app based remote start would have been a big plus. I always had manual transmissions though, up till I got my truck and was sadly forced into an auto.

      Data is still data, and data isn't free. Try telling your ISP you want free internet because you only browse the web and don't stream Netflix or something, see how far you get with that.

      Also the unlocking is a app that needs to me developed and programmed for many devices and updated regularly to ensure quality look and speed. That cost money not to mention to send that signal over app is wifi and that means the truck needs internet or satellite connection. That cost money. So if you can understand Onstar you should easily understand the rest.

      @@sipher3516 Yeah I realized all these services on the subscription are services that require a data plan - these things have to connect to the same LTE/5G services as any phone to function. That's what you're paying for. Not really much different in concept than paying for XM or something, even if excessive. Pretty certain every vehicle sold with in car wireless has required a subscription of some kind.
      I wouldn't find it necessary to have personally, feel like Carplay/Android Auto plus the normal keyfob would take care of the majority of the things here but eh. I haven't even owned anything with a screen yet so what do I know lol

    We bought a highlander and Toyota turned our remote start feature off and wanted us to pay monthly for it I told them no so we took our vehicle to a friend who has a shop and added an aftermarket remote start system to it and it works just like the factory system does

    I guess GM forgot that some or most can be purchase via third part. Also the phone key thing will hurt people more than they think when it comes to hacking. Trust me I know due to me working for a automotive company that offers this feature.

    My buddy had one of the last model years of the excursion. Was gonna buy a new SUV like an expedition but saw what they were charging for new vehicles and about crapped his pants. Money is not an issue for him but in his words "they're expecting ppl to pay near a hundred grand for a SUV?"
    So, he found a custom shop and basically had them rebuild his Excursion, added a turbo diesel, updated the transmission, brakes, suspension, etc etc. Basically the only thing original on it now is the frame. Cost him less than a new vehicle, and that includes COMPLETELY modernizing the interior, in many ways better than a new vehicle because he got to pick every little detail he wanted.
    I may go this route with my 17 Rebel lol

    My 2017 Camaro had the Chevy app. Without it, the fuel gauge didn’t work until you started the car. But I had no intention of paying their monthly fee.

      Better get ready to lose remote start function from the key fob as well. My friends 2019 Tacoma just got shut off, literally overnight because he opted out of Toyota's subscription service.

    What you describe seems to me to be what use to be available through OnStar. Is OnStar not available in the Silverado ZR2? OnStar seems to be simpler with the options to choose from. You push the OnStar button and talk to the OnStar person and set up the plan you want.

    My trial ran out but I’m not renewing either. Of course, my 23 sand dune metallic Trail Boss is the custom version so not as many bells and whistles as your “prosthetic limb ZR2”. I’ll only miss remote start and vehicle locate.
    Edit: my wife’s Jaguar app and functionality has been $0 from day one and has these features and more.

    We’re confused as well. Purchased our 2023 Silverado and can’t figure out why Google maps doesn’t work without an additional data plan. Can’t figure out how to buy that plan. It keeps coming up as a Safety and Security plan for $299 a year, with or through Onstar, which we don’t want. Pretty shitty after spending $62K

    The thing that was confusing you is, the more expensive package came with a wifi Hotspot and unlimited data for it, not just unlimited data for the trucks system, it also had warner streaming included as well,...anyway paying $70,000 dollars for a truck and then being billed within a couple months just to continue to use features I already have, seems insane....I hope that people will not except this.

    We're moving from car ownership ( primary mode of transport and constitutional right of free interstate travel) to essentially perpetual debt/lease/subscription service for a vehicle that can be tracked and hacked. How about someone worth their salt at an automaker make an extremely basic truck again. Window cranks, manual trans, bare bones no computer. You know a vehicle that can be a family heirloom again lol

    Vehicles as a Service is such a horrible thing. I would seriously consider not buying a vehicle if it required a subscription for basic tech (like heated seats). At a bare minimum, the original owner should get all of that free.
