a friend of mine who is a very accomplished guitar player after seeing this video went home and tried to reproduce the slide technique at the end of this song. he told me, "It didn't work." In Jeff's hands it did.
I remember when "Who Else" came out in 1999 my life as a guitarist changed. I think he peaked around that time, and though he hasn't really slowed down, that era, late 90s, early 2000s is my favorite. Another favorite is "Bulgaria" from an album or two later, mind blowing phrasing and playing...

Myself witnessed Jeff. breakout a blond Telecaster and proceeded to play The Beverly Hillbillies theme banjo Style on the guitar to wear it sounded just like a banjo it was amazing
Yes! I first saw him play the Beverly Hillbillies in 1973 with Beck, Bogert and Appice. It was part of ‘Jeff’s Boogie’ back then and he played it on the oxblood Les Paul. There’s audio of it on RUclips and other places, search the song name and ‘Beck Bogert Appice live.’ They recorded a live album that was only officially released in Japan at the time,

All about telling a story on the guitar! This guy without the use off a pick! All feeling,I love beck! What makes it special, is his Phrasing! Very few players have this. David Gilmore is another great one!
There’s a version from 2006 from Udo in Fuji that’s great too, probably my fave. It’s on the #1 white Strat and there’s just the right ambiance imoho. He was using a Klon into his old Marshall superleads by then and the tone is Fat. I love the Ronnie Scott’s performances but some are just a bit dry bc it’s a small room. Jeff typically played theater size and larger venues and the bigger halls gave him natural verb. Udo/Fuji has that going on (even though it’s outside, must come from the audience mics?) as does this video.

Great but the snare drum is too damn loud and too " ringing " for this song. Steve should have muffled the top head a bit and went light on the attack. That bonging, loud, ringing snare interrupts the guitar sound and the whole mood of this song.
I know Beck is a mainly a great Strat player, but I always thought there was more stuff where he played a Tele. Apart fromt he videos with Eric Clapton. Maybe just this period!

Yardbirds-tele, first Jeff Beck Group-Les Paul and Strat (on Beck-Ola), second Jeff Beck Group-Strat, Beck Bogert Appice -Les Paul, Blow by Blow -Les Paul and TeleGib [tele with humbuckers], Wired-Strat…and then Strat as main guitar from then on. Except: Flash album in the mid 80s had him on a pointy Jackson Soloist for a minute. He’s pictured miming with a tele on the People Get Ready music video, probably played one on the session. Occasional tele one offs in the studio till the end. I saw him on nearly every US tour from 1972 onwards and only saw the tele come out in 1999 and 2002 for one song per show. It was pretty much all Strat from 1977-2022 at his concerts. Admittedly I only saw his shows in the greater Bay Area and Las Vegas. Pretty sure he played the tele on an 80s concert in Japan, possibly because he was jamming with Santana and lukather (?). He also played tele in a one off appearance with Eric Clapton at the Secret Policeman’s Other Ball in the UK in 1981.. He did bring the Les Paul back for the Les Paul (the artist) tribute songs he played as part of the rockabilly shows with Imelda May and her band in 2010. The rockabilly tunes, oldies covers and Danny Boy were played on the white Strat. For the Crazy Legs Gene Vincent tribute album in the 1990s he played a Gretsch, just like Cliff Gallup did on the original 50s recordings. In a couple of days Jeff will have been gone a year. I still think of him every day. RIP

You know, like when he was a real guitarist in the 60's and 70's and 80's. Did he use it occasionally, tastefully then??? Sure. Not like today's "Jeff Plays Timeless Memories on the Whammy Bar"................I saw him with Clapton in 2010. Went to see Beck, not Clapton. I expected Beck to blow Clapton off the stage. Didnt happen. Clapton, who I havent heard a new lick from since 1975, actually was a better show, although Beck played well in the 3rd set, whilst Clapton held down the songs and Jeff did his usual "Look at Me" act. Yeah yeah yeah , Nessum Dorma, Day in the Life, a bunch of contrived orchestra baloney as well. He didnt play a flat out guitar solo the whole night. Just a bunch of silly whammy bar melodies and guitar tricks. His best playing ended with There and Back. At least then he had Max Middleton, Stevie Wonder, NMW and Hammer writing interesting songs for him.

The concert is live in Japan 1999 and he always used it for all those years you mentioned just like how he quit using a pick .Even Eric Clapton said that he uses the whammy bar in ways that no other guitarist could come close to him .

I'm more interested in the notes he chooses, technique and dynamics. His own hand supplied vibrato is much more interesting than the exaggeration he applies with the bar. It's among the best in the world when he chooses. When he employed the bar as an accent it was much more interesting, not as his seeming main focus. Look at She's a Woman. Played on the Les Paul, no bar, awesome expressiveness. As far as melody playing it is head and shoulders above this DITL/Nessum Dorma/Whammy bar on every note. And he was much more interesting when using a pick most of the time. He played longer lines. He relied on his technique and tonal approach. Maybe he cant play like that anymore? In the 70's and 80's he was standing next to guys like McLaughlin and Carlton, on ability and technique as well and melodic approach. Jazz Rock was a thing. He had to stand out.

He started out on tele..then lespaul.but ended up.settling on a strat.still brings out the tele for some things
