Same here! I’m a new plant parent living in western Canada where there’s like several months of zero sun Now as the expensive plants keep dying on me I’m starting to fall in love with the Pothos that are still thriving LOL
Orchids are what started my whole obsession, love, and passion for plants. My son bought me an orchid for Mothers Day about 5 years ago. I remember thinking oh this is cute, but the poor thing is definitely not going to last long in my care. However I did so well with taking care of it that I AMAZED myself when it produced a keiki. I was soooooo damn proud of myself. I removed the keiki and potted it up and watched that one thrive as well. So then I went out and bought 4 more orchids and then before I knew it, I had about 100 houseplants give or take. Now few years later I have about 200. 🤷♀️😁🥰 💚🌿
Watch out three years ago I had to orchids and now I have over 70! I've even started to buy bagged babies at the big box stores like Lowe's. And what I'm referring to is orchids that are in a bag like onions would come in like a knitting bag most of them aren't even watered when they come to the store. They're not in bloom They're not in bloom and it will take a couple years for them to bloom so you have to be patient! I've learned a lot about the orchids and the past three years and the first thing I do when I buy an orchid is to repot it and fresh bark. Your orchid is in sphagnum Moss and that only lasts about a year because it turns acidic in a year and will kill the roots of the orchid bark takes about two years to turn acidic and kill the roots. Also it's hard for orchids that are packed into Moss to breathe oxygen... They're crammed into those pots with lots of moss because the people at the big box stores don't water the plants and that's usually why they get reduced because the roots are going bad. You won't hurt an orchid if you repot it while it's in bloom I do it all the time and have no problems with Bloom drop. Also if a bloom dies you should take it off immediately because it gives off ethylene gas and will cause the other blooms to dye. Also if you have them in the kitchen don't have fruit in a bowl anywhere near them especially bananas or the ethylene gas given off will kill the blooms. I have a RUclips channel that I started because of my orchids and I just did a video on why you should repot your orchid right away and show what happens to an orchid if you don't report it and it hasn't been taking good care of previously. To get an orchid to rebloom after a year and it's growing new leaves and roots it needs a drop in temperature of about 8 to 10 degrees for a couple weeks at night and that will set up Bloom Spike. Or sometimes when you turn the air conditioner on in the summer the colder air will cause a spike to form.
@@dees.1686 I couldn't figure out how to put a fancy name for my channel so it's just my name and if you put my name Kathleen Murphy in the search engine along with the word orchids houseplants Etc you'll find my channel. I try to check everyday to see if anybody's left the comment so if you have any questions just let me know a lot of what I've learned is over the past 3 years from a couple other people but I don't particularly like one that's really popular... The ones I watch because most of mine are phalaenopsis and a lot of the other people deal with all kinds of orchids but these two particular people deal just with phalaenopsis with Carolyn... And her channels name is named after her and her husband so it's a combo name and her husband's name is Jack... So it is called j a c o l y n s orchids. I use the microphone on my cell phone keyboard to make comments and it always spells Jacqueline the wrong way. Also another person is Rick's orchids the information he gives is about the nutrients and how they work in an orchid and why calcium is really important because they're calcium Hogs. Phalaenopsis orchids are very very easy to take care of it's just we're so afraid of them from what we've heard through the years. They're the kind of plant I think I've sort of like a pothos that benign neglect is better than fussing over them and watering them all the time. Orchids need to dry out and I can go a week to sometimes two weeks before I have to water. And the way I water is I soak them in a nutrient solution and a Tucker tote or one of those plastic storage containers so I can fit 5 or 6 orchids at a time to soak. As soon as you buy an orchid though you should also have new orchid bark to transplant it in because you don't know how old the media is that it's planted in and it could be acidic which will kill the roots. I have videos on repotting but since I only use my cell phone to do all this I don't have fancy things at my channel like dancing plants at the beginning Etc. So pick yourself a pretty orchid look to make sure there's some aerial Roots sticking out of the pot that are nice and plump and not dried out and never ever ever use ice cubes to water an orchid or any plant really. Also try to get one where all the flowers are not open but at the end of the flower spray there are still some clothes buds.
Amazing information! I have always admired orchids but I was sure that I might not be the best plant parent for one. Your post is very informative and well written! It makes me feel like I could be successful with an orchid. Many, many thanks for all the good information!!
Great video, thanks for sharing. When plant tissues start to harden and turn woody it is called lignify... I think that is the word that you were drawing a blank on when you were talking about the jade.
I've had the common "ZZ" plant for a while, and loved it for being so easy care. Plus it can fill a space if you want to hide wires, and not being too fussy on light, you can have it in a corner. Recently I purchased the "Zenzi" variety, which is the dwarf version, and I love it so much more than the standard variety. Because you can pop it in little spaces. The standard, gets tall and leggy, which is fine if you have the space for it. But if you only have small places, like a tiny portion of an office desk, or even in a caravan, I highly recommend the Zeni variety of ZZ. All the benefits of the standard, in a more compact size!

Love watching my monstera grow! So rewarding! I have not had much success with keeping my orchids alive. I had root rot and crown rot. I think I bought them that way. So propagating both of them again. I love orchids. Just hoping once they can be potted again that I can get them to grow. Also any recommendation for West facing windows. Hi Harli! I have ZZ plants, both green and Raven, aloe, lucky bamboo and Hoya's out of your picks. I'd like to try a Monstera, but have no room for one. I had a jade plant years ago, but had no luck with it. Maybe again some day..... I went on the greenchef site, but it seems like there aren't very many choices. Plus, they wanted too much info if they do have more choices. I'm the kind of person that wants to see everything before giving out any info. So the window in your kitchen is a north facing window that gives light to your shelf in the kitchen?? All those plants look so good and I thought they would need more light than that. Very interesting. I love all your tips when you explain plants 😊
I agree that Phalaenopsis and their hybrids are awesome beginner plants! I still have my very first Phal that I bought 6 years ago, and it's absolutely massive now. Sorry if you answered this in another video but the care instructions I've seen on orchids from big box stores say you water with an ice cube. None of mine ever survived but I wanted to ask - is that true?? Or is regular or filtered water fine??
That is not true. Orchids are tropical plants so the ice cubes would shock the roots, resulting the plant to slowly die. Missorchidgirl has a video on this topic. Shes awesome, I suggest you to look her up🙂
I started to buy orchids three years ago and now I have 72 or more orchids in addition to hundreds of houseplants. The reason why they said to water with an ice cube is that that's about how much water an orchid really needs per week like a shot glass full of water. But you kill the roots that way. I always repot my orchids in new bark and a clay pot as soon as I get them because you don't know how old that bar or sphagnum Moss is and if it's too old it turns acidic and kills the roots. Orchids like to dry out so depending on the humidity in the air they don't need water for a week to ten days and sometimes my orchids have gone as long as two weeks. The way I water mine though is I put all the nutrient solution at half strength and a big plastic storage tub and put the orchids inches soak for about 20 minutes or half an hour... I then let them drain onto a tray with the ceiling fan blowing on them to make sure the crown is dry I then put some back in the window. I have a RUclips channel that I started because of my orchids at the suggestion of Carolyn whose husbands named Jack and their channel is named after a combo of both their name so it's spelled j a c o l y n s orchids. She has interesting ways to display her orchids in vintage dishware! She's the one that suggested I start a RUclips channel and she gives a lot of information on how to take care of your orchid. Another good person is Rick and his stations named Rick's orchids. He's no longer posting new videos but I learned so much from him about nutrients and mobile and immobile nutrients and lots of other things that also apply to my house plants. Also the reason why they suggest Ice Cube's is because most people throw their Orchid out after it quits blooming which is a real crime so it doesn't matter how long it lives they just worried that it doesn't get overwatered and rots out to soon... Never ever ever put an ice cube on an orchid it kills their roots if you like to learn more I just did a video and compare the healthy root systems of just bought orchids and one I didn't get repotted right away and what happened to it. Just put my name in the word orchids into the RUclips search engine and you'll find my channel but I also do house plants Hoyas Etc
I have a Monstera Deliciosa! Quick question though! I have it in a North facing window and it's growing lots of new leaves but they're way smaller than the original ones. Does that mean it needs more light? Or should I fertilize? I want the new leaves to be bigger 😁
You should do a plant clinic series. My plants do tons of weird things and sometimes I need another pair of eyes to see it and go "your crazy. it's fine" haha
My jade plant is a propagation of a single stem that has been growing upward so well but not out. It’s starting to cork but is really tall. how do I get it turn full like the one Harli showed?
Literally either it will put out new sprouts itself OR you can cut it, they give out aerial roots and you wanna cut right below that because it should be at a node and just stick it right back into the pot.
Help plz!! Is it normal for a Zz to not grow a new “stem”? (idk what they’re called LOL) I’ve had my variegated zz & raven zz for about a year and neither of them have gown at all. They’re still alive and healthy but I’d like some new growth as reassurance lol 🙏
Aloe easy to care for? I have mine over a year now and I still haven't figure it out yet! If I water it, it's leaves get all droopy , if I don't water it so often then the leaves start to shrink and get paper thin. If I don't give it enough light the leaves get droopy again, but if I give it some more light then the tips get orange and start to burn! The tips even got orange once when I did the experiment of watering it every 2 weeks. It's growth is also stunt, I don't know what to do!
I am sticking to common houseplants... every time I buy a plant that is not so common they end up dying... I appreciate my common plants
🙋🏾♀️ same here!

My Jade plant bloomed this year! Sooo happy about that :D :D :D
Great video! Can you show us your favorite uncommon ones next?
Yaaaas we love a part 2
What's the best lighting for an orchid
Love my Hoya Carnosa too!💚
Now I’m excited too harli🤩
Gorgeous plants awesome list
Thanks for sharing I enjoyed this
I've started soil free (leca argile ball) plant to prevent roots rotting and pest, was wondering if you ever heard of it and if you evert tried it?
Love the ZZ plant!
Harli I Love me some commons!! - all green no variegation for me. They don’t seem to like me very well 😜thanks for the fun video
I have a Monstera Deliciosa! Quick question though! I have it in a North facing window and it's growing lots of new leaves but they're way smaller than the original ones. Does that mean it needs more light? Or should I fertilize? I want the new leaves to be bigger 😁
Ryan putting the salt was so funny lol agree with all of these!! I need to dabble into orchids! They are really beautiful! ✨✨🖤 great video!
Lucky bamboo: "tolerant of underwatering" *me looking at mine that lives in water* is my life a lie?
🤣🤣❤
How do you get your Jade to be so full at the bottom? It’s lovely 💚
Can you share where you find the grey terra cotter pots?
You should do a plant clinic series. My plants do tons of weird things and sometimes I need another pair of eyes to see it and go "your crazy. it's fine" haha
What’s the good news Harli G dizzle!!?!??? 🤔🤣😉
Common house plants are the BEST
I have never seen a Jade like that at any store near me but I also live in a very rural area
ZZ plant is the easiest. Mine is in the darkest spot in my house and still growing fast
