@@NewUkeNewYork exactly! I don’t really love to watch about plants I probably will never get. I want to get the common ones and make them the biggest, baddest ones that I can make them! 😁😁😁
I agree! I've been caring for house plants for almost 10 years now and I still get excited over a lush, beautiful pothos. I really enjoy the "common" plants because they're easy to grow, low maintenance and communicate their needs well
I agree, I don’t see myself ever spending more that around $35 for a plant, so rare expensive $100 for a one leaf rooted cutting are of NO interest to me.
You asked where are all the string of pearls. They are at my house! 😁 I have a decent sized regular one, a small variegated one, and trying to prop both as gifts. ❤️ One of my favorite common houseplants is marble queen pothos. 🤤 No one will ever convince me that's not the most beautiful plant there is.
It’s the old plants I grew in my teens that I always return to when I revisit filling new homes with plants. I find they grow well with easy care and they are as beautiful as the drama queens that bring as much stress as pleasure. Yes… definitely happy with my basic common beauties ❤️❤️❤️
I miss my philodendron brasil, that I gave away to make more space. I love that simplicity of plants that are just growing happily having no problem in the world..
I agree with you about just looking at the plant and not sweating if it’s common or rare! I love all common pothos varieties! And the solid green monstera is a classic!
I try not to value a plant based on if it's common or not. Not disparaging that, but I try to just gravitate to what is most satisfying to look at or grow!
Let's hear it for the philodendron burle marx. My favorite because of the ease of growing and propagating. It is also consistent with keeping the leaves sprouting winter, spring, and summer. A 4 inch plant can quickly grow into a sizeable floor specimen.... no grow tent needed.
I've keep seeing plant videos related to stress. Just know that you're the one creating your own stress, no one is forcing you to keep buying plants or put so much time into keeping them. A lot of people simply choose to buy flowers, watch them wither, and then buy new flowers. Too much talk about plants revolves around perfectionism, like it's a competition. Think about why you got into plants in the first place, I bet it wasn't because you wanted to have all the latest rare plants for your "collection". If anything, plants should be a reflection reminding us that nothing lasts, and that we should saviour the moment. So close down instagram, enjoy the plants you love, and don't worry about the rest.
After nearly 40 years of growing house plants I still love the old ones. Though I do get excited about a few rare ones too. The plants that used to be "common" are the ones people were able to take a cutting from when they were at your house. Its how I got all mine. You weren't really be able to buy plants back in the day. Maybe the odd one at the florists or maybe the fruit and vedge shop. Much the same as garden plants. I'm sure every area had the same dozen plants that everybody had. Ye olde spider would have been number 1.
I restarted my plant hobby last summer and due to expense, all my plants are pretty common. I love my philo Brasil and how different each leave is. I also love my heya compacta. I bought it in memory of my son because he was wild and crazy and fun just like this plant.
Your scindapsus is so beautiful💕 some of my favorite common plants are the rabbits foot fern (the only fern I’ve kept alive for multiple years) and avocado trees! Such a fun thing to grow and if you put them outside in the summer they get huge!
Hi Fern! I couldn't agree more with your selection 🌿, I only regret I live so far away (Poland), if we were neighbours, you'd find one of my three huge raphidophora tetrasperma on your doorstep 😉, all of them are propagations of my original one. Thank you for the video, greetings, Irena 🌿
It took me a year but I finally transitioned my raphidophora to pon! It is finally looking like itself again 🤍 I totally agree with your list! They are all great common houseplants 🥰 Nice to see you back Fern 💙
I just love the plants I love, I’m not really interested in how rare or uncommon they are. Nor am I interested in getting the biggest leaves possible. I have many plants and I love them all.
Honestly I like this content. So much so that I saw the thumbnail earlier and actively went back to find it again. My n'joy pothos has brought me so much joy. I got a 6" cutting for free, and gave it away to a friend after cutting it up and propagating it. It got big and I got nostalgic. Friend gave me back a cutting and I'm starting a new pot. When it isn't valuable you don't worry about killing it. Honestly you learn more than you'd think. My monstera deliciosa was $15 on Amazon. The little thing was 7" tall and it's fucking HUGE now.
I loved this video! I loved everything about it, felt like a chat with a friend lol ...I remember how excited I was when I got my Neon Pothos and wide form Adonsonii clippings from a plant swap by Summer Rayne Oakes from Brooklyn Homestead! Plants that are common is because they’re so awesome everyone should have them! Plant love from Brooklyn NY 💚
ey Fern, if you miss a tree: You can just bring a big branch from outdoors inside. Of course check it first (for any visible infestation) and once you've brought it home clean it by either giving it a shower or wiping it off (if for example it doesn't fit into your shower). It brings super cool nature vibes into the home. And also what you can do: You can put trailing houseplants on it - I mean you can kind of wrap around the ends of a plant around it. (Sorry, English is not my native language). I don't have a plant on my branch yet, but I want to exchange my branch soon anyways. It looks very great!
So glad to see a video from you today! I am just having a day and it helped to see ya! Thank you so much for all that you do. You have no idea how much you really help me mentally. Stay beautiful 💓🫶🏽
Same! I have 3 uncommon ones, they sit in self-watering pots and hardly need anything from me. My favorite has dark green leaves and burgundy backs, the flowers looks like tiny purple roses 🥰
Ficus are just pest magnets, period. 😆 In my childhood neighbourhood in the Philippines, we had some Ficus Benjamina around. You can tell they have thrips because a lot of the leaves folded in half. When I was a kid, I unfolded them to unveil the black thrips. 😂 But, man, are Ficus trees beautiful! Especially when they are ancient. We even have folklores about them.
I own most of the $5 section. 99% of my collection is common plants. The few that aren't are because I found variegated Marantas in the $5 table and Ive been exchanging them for fancy plants. Got a Philodendron Splendid recently ☺️
Oh what a great video. I love this! So fun, inspiring (just added string of pearls to my list lol) and encouraging (my Calathea …). Can’t wait to see more like this! My favorite common plant ever is either my philodendron Brazil or Hoya krimson queen ….
The most common plant you will see in my house is a holiday cactus back in 2010 I was so addicted to them and they were everywhere in my home but I did down size to only 9 so I can have other plants 🪴 😆
Spider plants are probably my favorite! They are pretty to look at, super easy to care for, and throw off a ton of runners! They have been my favorite since I was a little kid.
My favorite "common" plant in my collection is my Purple Passion. It's absolutely gorgeous. The leaves are huge. And the purple hairs on the dark green foliage...to die for!
I killed my begonia maculata over the winter (low low humidity and a few too many missed waterings) but this summer I got an angel wing begonia miss mummy for $5 and I am blown away by all the growth it has given me! It’s nearly October but it’s growing 2 new stems from the bottom and nearly a leaf of every node, not to mention the beautiful flowers!!!
Thanks for sharing this. I see we have the same taste in common plants. I've been searching high and low for another Hoya Carnosa Compacta. I had a small one and didn't take good care of it and it went to plant heaven ☹️. Yours looks marvelous.
String of plants are the absolute prettiest plants I have had. Just insanely gorgeous hanging in windows. Thrive off neglect which is my fav. types!! Variegated compacta is my second favorite though. Can't go wrong with a hoya in general. They r super vocal.
Ahhhh thank you for this video!! I'm a total newbie to plant care and this video is so casual and informative. This has given me so many ideas and inspiration. I just bought a pothos and a snake plant and hopefully it goes well! (any advice from anyone is welcome). I will definitely be subscribing to your channel!!
Thank you for sharing Fern! Lovely chill video and full of your feelings about adorable plants 🌱💚 I love calatheas and I am hoping to find a Calathea warscewiczii soon! I want to get a Hoya compacta too 😊 Hope you are doing great!
Crazy… the more common plant that came to mind for me as a favorite before you mentioned it was the rhaphidophora tetrasperma. Even stranger is that I still have yet to even own one. It reminds me of an oak tree for some reason 🤔 🤷🏻♂️
Your mealy bug comment made me laugh, because i’ve recently found Hoyas and prone to them- and also my favorite plant. My hoya compacta has them and it has been a nightmare!!!
Ohhh I love this. Plants for the love of plants. Not that I don't enjoy the thrill of the chase that is getting rare or expensive or difficult plants and having them thrive, there's definitely a buzz from that. But there's such joy in the simple things too. Monstera deliciosa, Philodendron silver sword, Snow queen pothos, Clalthea orbifolia, Parlour palm, all such a joy and so accessible.
I know this feeling! I get this, too! I love common plants, and I miss when I first got into plants and I didn’t know what everyone else was into. I just would see something at the store, and try it. And I never got plant FOMO, and I wasn’t like looking for specific plants.
Furry feather calathea has been my personal favourite, it sits in very low light, grows like a weed and my humidity sits around 30%. I also love Christmas/Easter cacti!
String of pearls are like the goldfish of plants…they seem like a cute idea, they look like they’d be easy, but they end always end up croaking. I have had my current ones for a year after bringing them back from the brink and I’ve decided high light in a west facing window is they key. For watering, I follow pinch test- if it’s wrinkly I water, if it’s plump I leave it.
My favorite common plant is African Violets. They are so bright and colorful and I love that they randomly bloom all year long!! Also Christmas/Thanksgiving Cactus. I love a random bloomer!
SoP is still one of my favorite plants to grow. It’s so satisfying to see it thrive. I’ve killed 2 before the one I have now, but all is good for the time being 😁
love this style of video and i love your list! I’d love to have a burros tail one day but where i live it’s not so common haha i mostly only own common plants but think my favorites rn is lace fern and calathea freddie 🌿 they grow so well for me
My husband got me a monstera deliciosa on clearance at sams club for $22 couple months ago I’ve been really loving what that adds to our space. Ahh yesss burrows tail🤩always wanted one of those
Monstera is one of my favorite! Once you understand it, it really is easy. My next would be Satin Silver Pothos (scindapsus) Real Pothos, Yucca and Mass Cane, even though sometimes I have struggled with Mass Cane for some reason. Calathea is another that does not like my house, it is too fickle! Of course bringing up the rear would be ZZ Raven and ZZ Regular! Then there is my Cacti collection! I still have a much smaller collection than your average youtube plant enthusist! The plants and care of them are relaxing!
I totally agree with all of your picks! But I think I over watered my TR and root rot? I have been propagating them in water and they got gorgeous roots. Just recently put them in soil so fingers crossed! 🤞🏻 Thanks, love your videos!
My plant journey was most definitely a roller Coaster 😆 I hoarded plants of all kinds for a bit, than only wanted rare plants, to than focusing on aroids, to now looking at the plant for the plant itself and not because it’s rare or trendy. Now I enjoy my plants more than ever 🪴 ♥️ & some of my favorites are my common babes ! Pothos/Epi will always be a top !!
i still love my monstera deliciosa so much! it was one of my very first plants but i still get the most excited for her new leaves bc they are HUGE!!! i love my more common plants bc i can share cuttings with people that aren’t plant experts
I love your appreciation of the more available plants. There are some many gorgeous common plants. Marble Queen - hell no, she is not ordinary. If PPP had stable variegation with a constant variety of gorgeous leaves - in our dreams. Easy to care for beautiful plants make for a beautiful home. & the finicky divas that are more expensive & need more care have their place too of course. It just bugs me when people get snobbish about core plants
Lol I propagated a bunch of rhaphidophora not too long ago and I was trying to sell them and didn’t get a lot of bites lol. I ended up putting them all in a pot together yesterday with a support excited to see what it’ll do.
Ive been a plant person for many years now and I’ve always been pretty basic with my plants I just have lots. I have 4/5 marble queen they’re my favorite! But I have tons of rare plants now bc people say I got them into plants and give my cuttings and I’ve never bought one!
I enjoy the "uncommon" plants the most I find. Common ones aren't always excited or needy enough for me or are TOO needy for me. And rare ones are too expensive or make me too nervous to splurge and may even kill it. But plants hanging out around the 20-50$ price range for a small 2in-4in, that typically you have to find online or through a special plant shop, not just showing up everywhere. Those tend to be the right amount of exciting and loveable plants in my collection. Hoya chelsea, Philodendron brandtianum, some of the syngonium varieties come to mind as examples.
I just started my plant collection this past spring. And while I have my monstera varieties and pothos varieties a fiddle leaf, succulents, peperomia, snake plants… my baby, my absolute pride and joy, the girl I would do anything for? My tradescantia nanouk. I love her, she is flourishing, she is flowering. She’s beautiful 😍
What a great video. I have most of the plants mentioned. I don't have "rare" plants at all. With the price of them and the extra care they need, I can't do it. I do love seeing everyone's on RUclips for sure.
This is super cute! Fern are you gonna do some Halloween merch? I’m sorry if you’ve mentioned before. I’m just like wanted to buy a cute sweater and if you’re making some Halloween stuff I’d rather wait for that ❤️
I’m barely just getting into the more rare plants I do love them, my wallet does not. But I also really just appreciate the simplicity of the normal house plants because they are way more less maintenance and they still bring such a beautiful greenery to my house. You mentioned a few of my favorites adansonii , the friendship plant, rubber tree plant, hoya Hindu rope, string of pearls, Pokeadot begonia. But I also enjoy Snake plants because they are so easy-going and you don’t have to worry about them very much for pests I’ve never seen any spider mites or anything on those. But also I Appreciate all Hoyas because I can let them trail and I don’t have to worry about their lease is getting smaller I can just let them do their damn thing. My moss poles honestly kind of get annoying and plants that go along with them because I hate seeing my plants get smaller and smaller leaves😒 (such as my philodendron heart leaf, cebu blue pothos, Exotica, micans. ) I wish they would just put out normal big leaves without sizing down as they trail.. But it is what it is lol I also really appreciate my massive Monstera Delicioso because it’s just so easy-going and it puts out massive leaves. Such a statement piece.
I appreciate a plant based off how much I enjoy caring for it, looking at it, and all of that. My faves are constantly changing but for the most part I’m drawn to long leaves! I could care less if it’s “common or rare” but it does make it more enjoyable to have plants in my collection that you don’t see everyday. That’s kinda what I’ve really been drawn to lately. Plants I don’t see on the daily. Some are considered common for “rare plants” and some are like big box store common. Does that make sense? Haha basically I just enjoy the happiness plants give me. They are so peaceful to be around!🥰💚

SoP is still one of my favorite plants to grow. It’s so satisfying to see it thrive. I’ve killed 2 before the one I have now, but all is good for the time being 😁
This has been a quick fun video. I loved it.
That Adansonii shiiine! I know what you mean. It’s so beautiful, such an underrated plant!!
love this style of video and i love your list! I’d love to have a burros tail one day but where i live it’s not so common haha i mostly only own common plants but think my favorites rn is lace fern and calathea freddie 🌿 they grow so well for me
I love my lace fern too, and really love my lemon button fern.
I love adansonii so I was really happy to see it make your list!!
I'm currently super into the starfish and lifesaver cactus 🌵❤️🌸
Love this video! Your Hoya is just gorgeous
Welcome back, been missing you. Had to say that even before I watched the video. Hoping all is well with you.
I 💚 my mini monstera. It’s growing in my big bay window framing my Hoyas!! It’s such a vibe!!!
I totally agree with all of your picks! But I think I over watered my TR and root rot? I have been propagating them in water and they got gorgeous roots. Just recently put them in soil so fingers crossed! 🤞🏻
Thanks, love your videos!
I feel this so much right now! My expensive anthuriums are stressing me out.
M. adansonii is definitely common but not the easiest under my care. They just turn yellow overnight 😅 It is a sensitive one.
I loved this video! I have some “rare and fancy” plants but my common plants are always a favorite 🥰
i still love my monstera deliciosa so much! it was one of my very first plants but i still get the most excited for her new leaves bc they are HUGE!!! i love my more common plants bc i can share cuttings with people that aren’t plant experts
that vintage obey shirt is so clean 🔥
I grow simple common plants and absolutely adore them, I don't put any pressure on the size of leaves
Yep, I have all of those apart from any elasticas and begonia. Love my burros tail and don’t see it very often in GB 👍🏼🇬🇧
Fern, your Calathea Warscewiczii has grown so much. It’s also my fave calathea too! 💚🫶🏼
Yes all of these are beautiful plants👍!
💚🌱🌵☘️
I’m always so jealous of your Hoya compacta!
I love common plants. I’ve been looking into coleus plants they are so colorful 💕😊✨💖
Oh they are soooo pretty! Especially when flowering :) I used to have one, but couldn't seem to keep it happy, sadly.
How do you do it? I want to buy more plants but I’m worried about shelf space lol. How do you have so many displayed and managed?
I appreciate a plant based off how much I enjoy caring for it, looking at it, and all of that. My faves are constantly changing but for the most part I’m drawn to long leaves! I could care less if it’s “common or rare” but it does make it more enjoyable to have plants in my collection that you don’t see everyday. That’s kinda what I’ve really been drawn to lately. Plants I don’t see on the daily. Some are considered common for “rare plants” and some are like big box store common. Does that make sense? Haha basically I just enjoy the happiness plants give me. They are so peaceful to be around!🥰💚
