  • Dear All,
Welcome back to the channel and the beloved Land Rover.
Today I swapped my Wolf rims back to the old solid steel rims with a mixed set of aging 7.50 x 16 Tyres. The exercise was elementary, but its something I've wanted to do since finishing the project, just to see what it looks like - So here it is for your enjoyment!
Speak soon and I look forward to the chat. Have a great weekend.
    Regards
    Joël

Definitely a more classic look on the original steels. I went over to Wolf wheels because they are tubeless, I seemed to suffer endless punctures with tubes, probably down to rough old rims and incompatible tyres. Love the sound of your Land Rover, sounds very sprightly and it definitely looks so right on those wheels. As for the tramlining, that's the downside of those kind of tyres. WRD is going to end up on some narrower tyres soon, but staying on the wolf wheels.

I have a 109 with Avon Rangemaster 7.50R16 (the R is for radial) which was factory fit for many years on new Land Rover Defenders. In the UK they cost little more than cheap and nasty imports (sub-£100 each plus £15 for a tube). They are tube type but I find the on-road behaviour is very good, no wandering, and this is on a Stage 1 V8 which will do 70mph. An alternative is the excellent but more expensive Michelin Latitude Cross 7.50R16 (also available in 235/85R16) which is marked "tubeless may be used with tubes". The Avon looks more period but the Latitude Cross probably wins in terms of roadholding. With the Defender 5.5x16 tubeless rims (which look almost identical to originals except for the tubeless bead) you could run the Michelins tubeless. My 88" runs the Defender tubeless rims with 205/85R16 modern tubeless tyres. 205s were an optional factory fit towards the end of Series 3 production and into the early coil sprung Ninety era. 205s look good on an 88" but too small for a 109. If/when the 88 needs new tyres I'll go for Latitude Cross 7.50s.

In my opinion, on a Series 3, the original rims look so much better than the Wolf rims. These rims and wider tyres go perfectly with the wider track of the Defender body with the plastic wheel arches, but the narrow 7.5 tyres fit perfectly to the series-body. I had modern Dotz-style rims on my 109, which allowed me to drive tubeless tyres, but the overall look of the car just did not feel right. I changed to the original rims and Avon Rangemaster Tyres two weeks ago and now it looks again like a Landy!

I was thinking that a compromise would be the modern ‘old style’ rims with the tubeless Goodyear tyres. That way you get the best of both worlds. Radial tubeless modern tyres and classic style rims. I have noticed however that the modern standard rims all came in white. So they would need to be painted in the sandstone to look correct.

Hi mate I like the classic look of the cross-ply, and I think series landys steer better on them (as in play at steering wheel ) i' m pretty sure on series 3s you have less toe in if you run radials I think if your only doing 85 km an hour radials are no advantage apart from sand driving ,and at higher speeds the cornering and braking are better , but in the Aussi bush cross-plys are more forgiving less sidewall punctures I my opinion. I have landys that run both types .cheers R

Only good for maybe a short trip to the local supermarket. I understand that you made this swap purely to check the aesthetics but you ended up with 2 dissimilar tyres on the rear axle, which is not the best situation for your rear diff.

Hi Joel, glad to see you back on the series 3. Am I correct in thinking that the tyres are all tubed? If so, the air leaking around the valve stem is probably normal. When you inflate tubed tyres, air trapped between the tube and rim has to escape through the hole by the valve stem. That’s why the stem has flutes up the side, to allow the air to escape. You should find the air leaks will eventually stop.

Your 7.50-16 are bias plys. They have more internal friction than the 235 radials. So the car uses more petrol with the 7.50 even thoug they are less wide.

No, onkly if your tyre type change to one that isn't written to your "Fahrzeugschein". 7.50R16 is pretty common for that vehicles. He might had one for the wolf rims, where TÜV checked that the speedo still works precise and steering works etc.

There’s a simplistic formula [((weight on axle /2)/max load)*max psi] in absence of official pressures from your operator manual (if you still have it) but works better on tubeless
Your tyre max load showed 1000kg@350kPa which is approx 50psi
Say, specified load on axle is 1100 you do 1100/2=550 then (50*550)/1000 = 28psi (cold) but then it’s adjusted to suit the tyres
I run my 235/85 r16 Davanti’s on my 90 higher than I did the BFG’s cos the sidewall is softer so the extra pressure reduces deformation @36psi all round so about the same as your pressures

I think so too. I always only had the 7.50’s when I drove it back in the day and had no real problems with them at all. But it’s nice to have the modern radials. 👍

Bet the leak is from air trapped between tube and tyre. On my 2a 88 inch I have 760 crossply on and they are good of road but terrible on road. My opinion is I would stick to your nice radicals. Also be aware of wet roads on crossply as you get into a lot of trouble. Here in Johannesburg it's usually hot and dry and the crossply are good with pot holes and bricks and rock on the roads.

Apparently not the consensus, but I liked the set with the Wrangler tires on them a lot better. The ones that were on it when the video started.....

Hi Patrick, good to hear from you. I’ll end up putting those back on as they are the better set up for use over here. They are also legal! 😀 German law states only the same Type/brand of tyres are allowed on one axlee es, and I’m Mixing that with the old ones. I just swapped them out as I like the original rims and wanted to see what the Landy looked like with them on. 👍
