- In this the 47th and final video on the land rover series 3 mechanical restoration I show you the entire project in under 10 minutes and reveal the full cost of the work completed. Front and rear axles were rebuild, brakes steering and suspension, 29 repairs made to the chassis, a full engine and gearbox rebuild, a new bulkhead and repaired front panel and a reassembly of all the parts removed to complete the work. The video concludes with a clip of the test drive.

Martin, you're too kind, many thanks for comment. I would love to say it was decided to keep the patina, but really it was just a lack of skills in painting and bodywork on my part. That said I love the patina look too.
There’s a lot of work there ! Not only in the vehicle but the video too ! Brilliant! And what a detail to keep that “ used “ look when under the skin it’s brand new !

I really appreciate your description of the project. I wish I could say it was my intention but if I'm honest it's just my lack of ability thats less the bodywork not being touched:)

Amazing job, amazing series! Thank you for documenting and sharing your work and journey. I have a '62 S2a that I am about to start working on. When you started, how much did you know about Land rovers? How did you learn along the way? Were you following a manual/guide or did you just know how to do it all? Thanks again!

I hadn't worked on a land rover before, but I have worked a fair bit on cars, I always refer to the manual for torque settings, and often look for YT videos foe the complicated stuff like the gearbox and bits of the axles. Jeffrey Croker from New Zealand does some very good videos that I referred to. But it is a reqlly simple vehicle, its a lovely thing to work on. If it doubt take a few photos as things come apart.

Very interesting, that’s a lot of work in just a few minutes, thanks for sharing this. I am busy with a video on the cost of my restoration and it is quite revealing. Do your calculations include the cost of labour or is that why you have indicated the labour time?

The costs listed do not include labour. Those are parts and outsourced work only. I did it this was as my neighbour didn't pay me for labour, he did work for us instead hence keeping a track of the hours

I’ve been driving a 109 for about 40 years….. I spent a small fortune on removing all the OME Tata tat an replaced it with original/quality made parts an I now have a really reliable truck.
Its so difficult to find the really good quality stuff. I have struggled with this on several projects. Good on you for sticking with it.
Me2 I would always buy 2/3 pieces an keep it in the truck for when it failed. Ive been lucky to date, couple of years ago I came across a garage full of unused military spares which have seen me well. It’s getting to the point now we’re I’m considering selling I’ve compromised before an I won’t do it again. Great vid 👍 happy off roading
@@jakehoward4755 thanks Jake. Yeah after a few different projects I'm finding it to be the fly in the ointment of classic car ownership. You're good for about the first 20 years, but once a car gets older than 20 years its begins to get trickier and trickier to get bits. What a massive pain I the arse
Does the chassis really rust from the inside out?
I have found it does yeah. The worst stuff was rusted quickly from the outside in, where dirty and water gets blasted on the chassis by the wheels. But the rest of the chassis does slowly rust from inside out.
I’m no expert , not even a beginner but I have seen people inject / spray wax to rust proof the interior of a galvanized chassis

Why didn't you paint the floor panels?.
Good question..... I painted some of the panels that's were steel and rusty, but the floor panels were aluminium. They require a more complex paint process and that paint would have worn off more quickly given that they are floor panels so I left them.

@@noLza88retro I'm afraid I don't know. It was all done for a neighbour of ours. So I just did as he asked. I know the later defender wheels fitted, they are an inch or so wider, 7j over 5j or something like this. But it won't give it much of a wider track.
