  • By request, we are trying out the brand new HAIYA Oil Pastels from Paul Rubens: amzn.to/402ZlzV (affiliate link)
This set features 48 lipstick soft oil pastels. Let's see how they work!

    Pastels: amzn.to/402ZlzV

    Silicone tools: amzn.to/3GzcCcn or amzn.to/3GDoJp1

These Paul Rubens Haiya oil pastels are very soft and blendable. I would recommend them as a last layer of a painting. They remind me a lot of the Sennelier oil pastels. I really like them and they are affordable. Give them a try if you want a really soft oil pastel for those final painting layers.

I got the 60 set and it's great - I compared the colors to the 72 set and the extra 12 are an extra rose nude (great lip color), a random grey lilac and a bunch of earths and greys. So you're not missing much. The 60 was a better deal per-pastel too. Also I got giant sticks of white and black; the size of oil paint sticks, but they are the pastel formula.

Cadmium really freaks me out although I do love to use the variations, it still just makes me all weirded out to take extra precaution. Really glad i heard you say about there being cad in this box. Thank you Lindsey..enjoy your reviews and demos! These look as soft as Sennelier but at a mere fraction of the price. Sennelier are gorgeous colors but they also just wear down so quickly and very expensive for a hobbyist (vs artist). Mungyo has a very soft oil pastel, also very affordable. The very soft oil pastels are good as a supplement to more sturdy pastels like Caran D’ache, Sakura Cray Pas, and even one of the Mungyo varieties.

However, you are right that they dont have a Calif Prop 65 warning, which it should have for the cadmiums. They are nice to play with though.

@thefrugalcrafter Lindsay Weirich agreed def. As close to sennelier as I've experienced atleast. Oddly enough I like to mix them with the slightly thicker pastels. Love the caran daches, the original paul rubens remind me most of those. But yeah I'm working on an intense video comparing them all haha I just always think it's funny when someone I adore (yes you!) Beats me to it. But I don't mind, you're my absolute favorite youtuber/resource for info on here. I just hope you never think I'd ever try to just steal or copy ideas or topics etc. In fact I'd love to be able to reference/send my future audience to your channel for info I don't fit into my videos if you'd ever be open to it. :) either way love to see you use these. Hullo Lindsay, thanks for this beautiful painting! I am glad that you use so many different mediums. I am just not a fan of the oil pastels, yet I have several brands of soft pastels and they are all in the same boxes! Well except for the Blick Studio set and the Blue Earth Nomad sets I picked up on e-bay! Those are separate from my other soft pastels because they are so different in softness or hardness. If I do try this composition I will be using soft pastels and I have recently watched Emma Colbert Art and she uses velour papers and she does amazingly detailed pet portraits! Hunnemule is the brand I think she uses, spelt wrong probably! I have purchased several sheets from Blick’s I do wonder if you have purchased any? My wife picked me up a set of pentell oil pastels at dollar general. At first I was frustrated, but I kept it to myself, that she spent the $5.00 on them when I already had a set from mungyo that I love. (When you're 80 plus $5.00 matters. Not that we live check to check or anything but I sure don't want to come to that because she thinks of me on her shopping outings) anyway, by God they are lovely. 50 colors, soft, non crumbling for $5 00.
I've had them for maybe a year now and although there isn't much of them left they are still going strong, still soft, etc. I don't use pastel paper maybe that's why they last me so long. If I do need it I'll add my own marble dust to gelatine then paint a layer on. Maybe one day I'll splurge and buy a real pastel paper.
It would probably make my life a whole lot easier lol
