What a great promo with all these CBS stars! I don't recall that we ever got a promo for any of the Chicago stations featuring the stars of a network's shows. I love the one with Isabel Sanford the most!

The Green Bay, Wisconsin TV station affiliation swap:
WMBV-TV 11/WLUK-TV 11 started out as NBC, then it became ABC from the 1960s until 1983, became an NBC affiliate again until 1995, when it became an affiliate of the FOX network.
WNAM-TV 42/WFRV-TV 5 started out as ABC, then it became NBC from the 1960s until 1983, became an ABC affiliate again until 1992, when it became a CBS affiliate.

Because of this, combined with the 1995 affiliate switches, WMAR Channel 2 ended up being the only station in the Baltimore market to have been affiliated, at one time or another, with all three "original heritage" networks (CBS, NBC, ABC).

Originally, channel 11 was set to affiliate with ABC. However, WBAL decided against this because ABC's evening newscast ratings were very dismal despite that network being #1 and WBAL's corporate parent Hearst being very close to the network. Further, a lot of the CBS shows were preempted by WMAR.

WMAR, WCPO/ Cincinnati, KNXV/ Phoenix, WFTS/ Tampa all switched to ABC Affiliates....Leaving WJZ owned by Group W. Group W merge with CBS..
KTVK/ Phoenix was dropped ABC & went independent.

WBAL partnered with CBS because then-affiliate WMAR had been a ratings also-ran (loser) because of primarily preemptions, even though people can just watch on channel 9, WTOP/WDVM/WUSA of neighboring Washington for preempted shows.

Jonathan Allen KPIX started with primary CBS affiliation. KDKA was a DuMont station back then with secondary CBS affiliation. When DuMont began to vanish, WIIC (WPXI) channel 11 got a permit and supposed to sign on with CBS affiliation in 1955. Due to 2 years of technical difficulties, channel 11 signed on with NBC affiliation in 1957. And Westinghouse bought KDKA and went to being a permanent CBS affiliate.

WMAR 2 From 1981, they moved to NBC and they switch on ABC in 1995.
WBAL 11 From 1981, they moved to CBS until they back to NBC in 1995.
WJZ 13 From signed on as ABC affliate until they moved to CBS in 1995 due to The Westinghouse affliation deal in 1995.

Everyone wanted out of NBC by the end of 1980. Flop after flop and being a distant third behind ABC and CBS second (until "Who shot J.R.?" on "Dallas" happened), and then the icing on the cake was when NBC lost the Moscow Summer Olympics coverage due to the U.S. boycott.
Either way, NBC's fortunes improved and they'd be back with WBAL 11 14 years later after the CBS/Westinghouse merger made ALL three networks change dial positions in Baltmore moving, CBS to WJZ-TV 13 and NBC back to WBAL. ABC signed a long term affiliation agreement with E.W. Scripps, the owner of WMAR-TV 2 in Baltimore, which gives WMAR a unique case of being a station once affiliated with all traditional Big Three affiliates at one point. Yes, 1994-1996... the years American TV network affiliate bonds were broken like never before.

    • @RedeIVT
      @RedeIVT 3 года назад

ABC's switch to WMAR was sort of a blackmail from Scripps-Howard Broadcasting. Scripps has been wooed by CBS to switch WXYZ in Detroit and WEWS in Cleveland to the network following the loss of legacy affiliates WJBK and WJW to Fox, but they wanted to have stronger ties with ABC, leading to include WMAR and flagship WCPO in Detroit as well as outgoing Fox affiliates KNXV in Phoenix and WFTS in Tampa in the affiliation renewal deal. If ABC didn't agree with the deal, WXYZ and WEWS would switch to CBS. Itself, that deal resulted from the fact CBS opted to affiliate with then-independent station KPHO in Phoenix after closing KSAZ to... well, Fox. ABC ceded and Westinghouse felt betrayed with the move. As a result, Westinghouse got into talks with CBS (whose flagship KDKA in Pittsburgh and KPIX in San Francisco were already affiliated with), considering their relationship with NBC wasn't the best due to the preemptions made by KYW in Philly and WBZ in Boston, to affiliate WJZ with. The problem: CBS already owned WCAU in Philly and NBC for long wanted an O&O there. Considering how costly it would be, NBC traded KCNC in Denver and KUTV in Salt Lake City to a Westinghouse-CBS partnership as well as WTVJ's transmitters in Miami in exchange for WCAU (that was also wooed by Fox since they were likely to lose WTXF to UPN, but then Viacom opted to buy WGBS instead and WTXF then became an O&O) and WCIX's transmitters in Miami.
After that, WBZ, KYW, WJZ, KCNC and KUTV all joined CBS, WBAL switched back to NBC (although Fox was interested too, but they already were in good terms with Sinclair and kept their affiliation to WBFF) and then, in 1995, they all became O&Os when Westinghouse bought CBS. And the rest is history...

WBAL switched to CBS to displace last-place WMAR, which became an NBC affiliate. NBC was satisfied with channel 2 more than any other frequently preempting stations (WSVN, WPTF/WRDC, etc...) because they can just watch the preempted shows on the neighboring Washington station WRC.
Scripps, which owns WMAR, made a deal with ABC, in which WXYZ and WEWS (both courted by CBS due to their affiliates’ switching to Fox) to remain their ABC status if some of their stations, including channel 2, switch to ABC. WJZ’s owner, Westinghouse, felt ABC betrayed them after years of loyalty. ABC was also reluctant to displace loser WMAR from winner WJZ. Westinghouse now had to find a network to deal with, which will affect their other stations. W chose CBS, which already affiliate with KPIX in the Bay Area and KPIX in Pittsburgh. The CBS switch affected 2 NBC affiliates, WBZ and KYW. The problem with KYW is that if it switched to CBS directly, Philadelphia would be a major city without NBC, until NBC offered to buy CBS’ O&O, WCAU. CBS chose to trade.
      CBS-GROUP W-NBC TRADE MECHANICS:
      1. CBS gives WCAU to NBC.
      2. NBC gives KCNC and KUTV to CBS.
      3. WTVJ and WCIX swap facilities and channel frequencies, with WCIX switching its callsign to WFOR, remembering of the new channel assignment, channel 4.
      4. CBS gives a controlling share of KUTV to Group W.
      AFFILIATION EFFECTS:
      WCAU - NBC (O&O)
      KCNC - CBS (O&O)
      KUTV - CBS
