Not even close. The first season was filled to the brim with antiquated sexism and ridiculous plots. Andy really played up being a local yokel with his good ol' boy accent, which I found grating, at best. Subsequent seasons got better but most of the first season is not what I would call good TV.
🌿🐿 @Butch Simpson She was very pretty and playing parts like Gomer's date (where they ended up dancing up a storm!), she gave us a chance to see how that whole blind date baloney plays out. Gomer wasn't aware that anyone thought she wasn't a total prize! (By not dolling her up with makeup, they kept her looking like any knockout would have looked without makeup. And besides raking in the money, she didn't have to diet every minute! 😛) Green Acres did show her prettiest face when Mrs.Douglas got her ready for some dance!
🌿🐿 @Butch Simpson As much as I loved the show, I was disappointed when Andy and Barney would reject girls because one had "fat knees." I wanted their characters to be above all that. Also, when Andy was telling someone how nearly non-existent crime was in Mayberry, he said all they'd had were a couple of wife-beatings !!! They would have been buried in letters teaching them how very serious domestic abuse always was (and still is) if society had been aware at all back then. .
I felt sorry for Ron Howard sometimes, playing this clueless kid with a name like "OPEY". Helen Crump , also an ugly name . Don't even get me started on "Goober and Gomer".
I’d hate to be the person who has to call an actress and say “we’ve got a part for a woman who’s ugly and we thought you might be just right for the part”.
Yeah, gay Jim Nabors.Reminds me of the episode where Barney was trying to comb his hair like Rock Hudson. He propped a magazine up by the mirror, there was a pic of Rock on the cover,& it said,"What's Rock really like?"Well,I guess we all found that out about Rock.
Every person on this show is like in their 40's and like, "Oh marriage isn't something you leap into" Maybe after ten more years of no physical contact dating they'll think about it. After all they'll be old enough to be grandparents by the time they finally tie the knot. But no rush. 🤦♀️
What does it matter? Are you equating being gay with being a sexual predator? I wonder if Helen Crump knew that Andy was heterosexual? Sounds silly now doesn’t it?
when gomer came back with a corsage for mary grace that put life back into her and lifted her spirits, THAT”S THE BEST.
I'm glad Gomer saw Mary Grace's kind & sparkling personality,she has a nice smile.😊
Best show ever made.

"And shes so nice....!!!". Cracks me up Every time!
This clip was nice....Real nice.
Mary Grace was played by Mary Grace Canfield. She later played Ralph on Green Acres. Wonderful actress.

@@diananutt1517 Exactly. Thankfully we’re past those days. A lot of the old shows would not pass today’s standards or social media.
@@Buddygold9509 🌿Wow,Butch!
We need more guys like you in this world. 🙂
I love at the end of the episode when Gomer is dancing he goes over to Barney and Andy, and says, “you guys were right, She’s nice, real nice!”
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I watch Andy Griffith everyday
At this point in my life I would settle for nice
🤣🤣 RIGHT!
In the long run, "nice" is a lot nicer than "gorgeous."
@@JDeWittDIY AMEN!
@@JDeWittDIY You fantasize about going to sleep with pretty, and you happily wake up in real life with nice.
Being a woman and concerning men.. I could settle for nice..I would want them to love the LORD more than they could ever love me.
The way Barney calls him, “Gome” 😂
Gome, Ange, Op. The tightly wired Barney had no time for 2nd syllables.
@@brianarbenz7206 this comment is gold we’ll done 😂👍

A real dope
Hey Andy hey Barny
1 second later
Classic!!
I have to watch the Andy Griffith Show at least once a day.
I'm the same way. It's actually therapy for me. I've said it for years.
Mina Rosered me too. Two in a row by me on ME TV
It’s on TV Land 3 times in a row weekday mornings from 9:00 to 10:45.
Only once?
Nice wins over pretty anyday ☺️
I’d hate to be the person who has to call an actress and say “we’ve got a part for a woman who’s ugly and we thought you might be just right for the part”.
Same as when the script calls for a fat person knowing that their size will be used for humor. I guess in the acting profession a job is a job.
She was a good actress. She probably knew she was not a beauty. "A dog" just means she's not especially pretty.
@Rex true, but she probably laughed all the way to the bank 😂
@@JR-zm2yu Correct. She was a good actress and had regular work.
What can you say, " a pay check is a pay check." LMBO
Barney had just gotten through calling her a dog, making Thelma Lou mad.
Have to confess, I always had a little crush on Mary Grace, whether it was here or Green Acres.
I would love to have a nice girl like Mary Grace.
I'd rather have a nice girl like Helen Crump.
❤😂
Truly nice is much rarer than gorgeous
After seeing her, Gomer joined the army.
That was a funny clip, knowing that In the back of Jim Nabors head that he had rather gone with a guy!
This is so funnie....
"What does she look like?"
"Ralph from Green Acres."
Well, she sure sounds.......nice
Nice!
from "A Date for Gomer" season 4 episode 9
Barney sure does have a nerve.
Gomer: is she pretty
Andy: she's nice do you know Thelma Lou need I say more
Me: you can't even trust your own friends she's not a keeper

LOL
Poor Gomer. Well, at least she's nice.🤣🤪😵
She’s nice, she’s real nice
I thought Mary Grace was very sweet. She was cute.
She was well cast as a homely person. Cute's a stretch, unless you think Bulldogs are cute.

It's just a myth that Jim and Rock were ever romantically involved. They knew each other, though. Both had to hide their gayness.
Ralph. Lol.
Greased transmission? WTF?
Lubed Gomer, not greased.
Dude don't over think it...just enjoy the humor
@@AN-vt8qq I wish shows of today had humor like this show did.
Gomer “is not a mechanic but he plays one on TV”.... He’s just reading a script, relax and enjoy the show.
@@Mark-sj3xb what a great TV show. Just pointing out how much Hollywood doesnt know about small every day things is amusing though.
Hmmm, why didn't Gomer say "warsh"?
Well they could truthfully say she’s really “nice” looking 😂
Beyond classic. Boomer television at its best.
Other than Ron Howard, none of the cast were Boomers.
Gomer Andy Barney Helen themla Lou Mary Grace
Poor Gomer. Those guys try passing all the 2's to this man.
How to hook up a gay man with a gay woman in the 1960’s. Brought to you by Jello.
The actress who played Mary Grace wasn't gay.
President Kennedy's funeral delayed this episode by two weeks.
They couldn’t actually use an ugly girl so they used one who wasn’t glamorous.
The Simpson did a joke about that. “We can’t sell this! We need Mary Anne from Gillian’s island. You know, TV ugly. Not ACTUAL ugly!”
@@kgpspyguy like they used Jan Smithers as the “plain girl” on WKRP, compared to Loni Anderson

The only married character in Mayberry was Otis, you know. The institution of matrimony wasn't really important in that all-American town.
And the only way that Otis could handle marriage was to drink heavily.
It was like the Seinfeld show of the 1960s
I wonder if Andy and Barney knew Gomer was gay?
What does it matter? Are you equating being gay with being a sexual predator?
I wonder if Helen Crump knew that Andy was heterosexual?

The only one they have to answer to is god no one else he's the only one who can really do the judging
Being heterosexual is normal let's be honest. Homosexual not so much. So fair question.

Not so fun fact: This episode was being filmed and wrapped up just as JFK was being assassinated.
Really? Wow!
Wow.
That's What I Say, WOW!!!!!
Andy lost it on the set when he heard about it. Andy Griffith that is, not Andy Taylor.
