This is fascinating. Andy Griffith pointed out how different the Andy Griffith Show was because it wasn`t filmed before a live studio audience. With a`live audience you have to play TO them, and the jokes have to come regularly. This is a small taste of how it might have been had it been shot like a sitcom. Thanks for posting! :)
l agree. You can definitely tell the difference, especially when they're shot before a live audience and the actors constantly have to stop talking, right in the middle of delivering their lines, to wait for the live audience to stop laughing and applauding. Most times, it just ruins the whole flow of the joke and makes the line less funny.
Yes, you are correct. Andy Griffith and Don Knotts are right up there with Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, George Burns and Gracie Allen, Lucille Ball and Vivian Vance (or Gale Gordon), Jackie Gleason and Art Carney and Mike Nichols and Elaine May, each of these considered among the very best comedic duos of all-time, even if only two of these pairs (Burns & Allen and Nichols & May) officially performed stand-up comedy routines.
I am so glad that I am able to enjoy this hilarious clean comedy on DVD every day of my life! Plain clean fun with NO nasty stuff. No bad words and no mention of sex, rape, drugs, and everything else that corrupts the youth of the world today. So I can honestly say, it doesn't get any better than that! Andy and Barney were best friends for life and they are both hilarious in different ways! I love the show!🧡💛💕💕😀🙏💮💮😂
Somewhere, far from here, it's a warm Sunday afternoon and Andy and Don are sitting on a porch happily shooting the breeze and maybe doing a little singing.
I adore this. I wish I knew what it was from. Knowing they were literally friends until Don died.. (Andy was there, as he was dying) makes this, extra moving.
I’m 28 years old and my dad introduced me to the Andy Griffith show when I was 14. Born in 92. I was born 32 years after the shows debut and I can school anybody at trivia. This is my number one show I never get tired of it. That being said; I hope for one second that this audience didn’t take this performance for granted and to witness these two comedic icons in action must have been insane! Feel like they didn’t even realize who they were actually watching at the time.
I was 14 when I got acquainted with the Andy Griffith Show. It was the passing of Hal Smith (Otis Campbell) that got me into to it. He played Whit on Adventures in Odyssey.
For those Andy Griffith fans, what an precious gem to find this skit. They redid a little of their most memorable moments from the show. And gave us a small imaginary glimpse at how scripts are made.
"The Andy Griffith Show" certainly became less comedic after Don Knotts left the series as a regular cast member. From Season Six onward the series evolved into even more of a dramedy, although the series had always had some dramatic elements to it, some episodes (such as "Opie the Birdman") more than others. But, perhaps ironically, the series' final two seasons were when it was ranked highest by the A.C. Nielsen books, #3 in Season Seven (1966-67) and #1 in its final season, Season Eight (1967-68), even though Season Three saw the series with its actual largest number of viewers, an average of 29.7 million in 1962-63. Don Knotts made guest appearances in all three seasons after he departed the series, two episodes each in Seasons Six and Seven, a single episode ("Barney Hosts a Summit Meeting") in the final season (Eight), the latter which was also the highest-rated episode of the entire series. Don Knotts also won five Emmy Awards (for "Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Comedy") for two of those three years he made guest appearances reprising his "Barney Fife" character in "The Andy Griffith Show," as well for "Outstanding Performance in a Supporting Role by an Actor in a Series" for the three seasons (One through Three) while he was a series regular in "The Andy Griffith Show." So, no, "The Andy Griffith Show" didn't actually "go south" after Don Knotts departure as a series regular. The series merely changed its direction a bit and relied upon other ensemble players, particularly George Lindsey's "Goober" Frances Bavier as "Aunt Bee" and Jack Dodson's town clerk "Howard Sprague" to fill the comedic void after Knotts left "Mayberry."
Andy Griffith & Don Knott's make a good team for their work. I like the part in the practical joke to where Andy says to barney, your not going to cry__ are you? Then barney go's over to the filing cabinet & says. No to Andy.
This is so cool...I’ve never seen this before at all...I didn’t even know it existed..two of my leading and supporting role actors if all times...that show could have went on for so many more years...
How blessed those of us were to have been born of 'The Greatest Generation', Also known as, 'Baby Boomers'! I don't like to disparage present-day 'Stars', movies and TV programs; but, when compared to the productions and personalities of which our generation had the great pleasure to have been witness, the differences in moral character and talent is glaringly obvious. We are indeed, a blessed generation!
Ironically, Don Knotts had already left the show when this Special aired…replaced by comedian/actor Jack Burns as Deputy Warren Ferguson…Knotts would appear twice during the ‘65-‘66 season as a detective out of nearby Raleigh…not surprisingly, those two episodes were the program’s highest rated of that season
Irony is that 1965 was the last year Don Knotts would be "Barney" on the AG Show. Andy was considering quitting the show & Don had a movie contract offer from Universal & took it because he naturally assumed that this would be the last year of the series. However, after Don finalized his deal with Universal, Andy decided to renew his contract to keep doing the series.
Don't forget, you actually see him in uniform in color briefly in the episode The Legend of Barney Fife from season 6. What I'm wondering is if this was done during his last season on the show as a regular or done during the filming of his first guest appearance on the show in 1966
I’m 23 years old, and I’ve always hated the shows on tv today: to much violence and sex, absolutely unnecessary. I love the old wholesome shows and movies (Andy Griffith, I Love Lucy, I Remember Mama, Casablanca).
The Andy Griffith Show (with Andy, Barney and Opie) was and still is the best show on TV. No matter how many times I see these programs I laugh as though it was the first time I saw them.
This is a clip from the Griffith, Knotts Nabors Special from 1965. I know this because I have the entire special. I mistakenly listed it as from 1966 due to the fact that 1966 AMCs are advertised during the special. If you would like to see the opening number, I just uploaded it to my RUclips page.
This goes to show that a live audience would have responded well with the funny scripts and situations from the actual show. Both were such great talents. They don't make entertainers like these anymore.
All the networks got their big stars to do these specials but CBS did the best ones and the most special variety shows. NBC always had Bob Hope do two or three specials every year that's where you'd see the NBC TV stars with Bob.

beatleman69 he left because Andy said he wasnt going to do anymore of the show, so don signed a contract for movies then Andy said he was going to do more. by that time it was to late. don said he wanted to go back but he was already under contract of the movies
Search- Savage do a search don knotts last interview before he passed. Technically, Griffith didn't want to gove Don any creative rights to the show. Also, Knotts had not signed the contract just yet when Griffith signed on at the last minute. But he figured he would not get opportunity like that again and I believe he was one of the more underpaid actors on the show which was ludicrous since he made the show.
