While I loved all of these talented actors, my two favorites were Andrew McCarthy and Ally Sheedy. They both seemed to have this shyness about them that made them endearing. I could also relate more to the characters they played. The article branding them all as 'Brats' was offensive and harmful to their careers. No one wanted to take them seriously afterward. The fact that some of them were able to continue working says a lot about their character and not allowing themselves to be labeled.
Where was Mare Winningham?! They completely left her out of the documentary! Even when Kevin McCarthy was listing out the members, he said 'who are we leaving out?'. Am i the only one that remembers Mare Winningham as being part of the Brat Pack?!
She could well have declined and didn’t feature, probably because she was not in any other connecting movies with other brat packers or brat pack adjacent people.
Why weren't Mare Winningham, James Spader, Eric Stoltz, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Anthony Michael Hall, Mary Stuart Masterson interviewed by Andrew McCarthy?
I’m a 3rd of the way in …….. and it’s outstanding. I realize what he’s doing with, and through, the documentary. It’s overdue therapy on film. Because they were all lonely actors 40 years ago who felt like they found genuine community in each other through their shared projects, then because of some petty journalist’s labeling them as half weights, they fled each other. The friendships dissolved due to overriding career concerns. The equally petty reviews I read about it prior to viewing it missed that mark. Because journalists remain erudite imbeciles. McCarthy almost starts crying on camera while talking with Estevez about his father dying. Many layers to this. Everything is psychology. Everything.
