I bought sony wf-1000xm5 , priority was ANC becouse it says in rewiews and ect.. it were best ANC earbuds.. but i got no difference between anc on or off , i still hear all people talkin and ect this is VERY ANNOYING for that i need to put more sound to not hear them, so i think why i need these earbud if anc not working and i can do the same with any cheap ones.... i think sony wf-1000xm5 is scam and lies about anc i am VERY DISAPOINTED for this and i think i want to take them back to shop... i tried all eartips and still nothing changes...
I have recently bought these, and I`d agree the sound is excellent. I`m a bit confused however about the ANC. Like you, I can hear quite a lot of sound coming through with ANC enabled, although the buds do keep the music at the front, and you can definitely enjoy whatever you are listening to. Some reviewers have implied that these buds are every bit as good as, for example, the Airpod Pros, and others have said Sony takes a different approach to Noise cancellation? Perhaps we are not able to get a good seal using the provided tips. I noticed when using the in-app test for a good seal, one or other of the buds is apparently not properly sealed. I have tried them all, and don't seem to be able to get an adequate fit. This has not really spoiled my listening experience at all, and i am definitely satisfied with this product. However, i don't really have much to compare them with, and different reviewers seem to have a differing experience of the actual noise-cancelling performance.
Hello, thanks for this review! I totally agree, I received mine a few days ago and the exact same thing happened to me regarding the ANC, in fact, until now I'm wondering if I have a defective unit, but seeing your review, it made complete sense to me. I tried all the tips and no change, I have some Xiaomi buds pro3 (U$30) and after comparing them again and again, I think the buds have a better ANC. I know the comparison is unfair but I also have the WH1000xm4, and their ANC is truly brilliant). Now, about the sound, for me they are excellent, the transparency mode also seemed very good, but the ANC is definitely NOT what Sony claims.
For everyone who is disappointed with the noise canceling, try to use the memory foam the right way, which is to squeeze the foam before you put it in your ear, then put it on and twist it, doing that you will note an enormous difference and improvement in the noise cancelation.
Have you ever tried Bose's QuietComfort? All the tech review channels that I follow claim that Bose's earbuds are the very best at noise cancelling for in ear earbuds. Most of them put the Bose QuietComfort II first and the previous version second place in noise cancelling in particular followed closely by the airpods pro second gen. If you haven't tried them yet I'd love to see a comparison video of the Bose QuietComfort II and the Airpods pro second gen. Even though I'd never buy the Airpods as I'm an Android user and Airpods won't work best for me, just wanted to know your opinion on the noise cancelling features of both earbuds. I've owned the Bose QuietComfort original version but they got stolen from me and would probably get the QuietComfort II but I purchased the Sennheiser Momentum 3 (which also have a great noise cancelling but still not even close to the first version of the Bose) as at the time QuietComfort II were not released and I didn't knew that they're coming.
I found the even on the largest tip I couldn’t get a good seal to make the ANC have any noticeable effect. Not the case on the AirPods Pro 2 though - I get a great deal on them. I think the oval tip shape makes a big different if your ear holes are on the larger side. AirPods Pro and Jabra and Bose all use an oval tip
I’ve got mine and fell blissfully asleep in the park whilst listening to them. The ANC works exceedingly better than the over hyped and over engineered Sony, but not quite as good as the Bose. They are however cheaper, very comfortable and worth every penny.
hey i have them, i have small ears, they sound rly nice and u can get a lot of bass from the eq app. i even sleep with them on. however im thinking about returning them because just like this youtuber said, the anc is poor i can hear everything thats going on around, voices meal clanking sounds etc, obiously damped but still. after this review im thinking about buying the airpods pro 2 even tho i own a samsung
I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the Bose QC Earbuds 2 They have ANC that is widely considered better than Airpods Pro 2. Their transparency mode is quite good as well.
In fact many reviewers claim that the Bose QuietComfort earbuds both versions are the very best in noise cancelling in particular with the QuietComfort II at No 1 spot and their previous version at No2 followed by the Airpods Pro..
Great review Mark, so if I only care about sound quality, what would you recommend? These Sony? The Marshall Motif II? Or Melomania M100? Or something else? Thank you!
It's the same as what I felt Thank you I am an iPhone user and I listened to Sony xm5, but I felt the balance was worse than I thought and I felt AirPods Pro 2‘s noise cancelling was much better than Sony. Sony is good at making headphones, but wireless earphones are still too much to keep up with Apple… further I think AirPods Pro 2's noisecancellation is better than headphone sony Xm5. To Iphone user, I think airpods pro2 is the most great choice. No matter how good Sony sound quality, the overall balance is still the best for Apple AirPods pro 2nd gen👍
Sorry to hear about your medical discharge, but wow what a career. I have compared my XM5 against Bose ultra and Jabra Elite 10. I compared them whilst listening to a bathroom extractor fan, out door air con unit, passing traffic and on an aircraft. The XM5 are not in the same league when it comes to Noise Cancelling. I can get a slight muting of background noise after a lot of pushing and twisting into the ear canal. I have changed tips, bought pricey silicon replacements, completed firm ware updates and done a reset to no avail.
Please review the WM5 call quality using the latest 3.2.1 firmware. I noticed a very clear improvement. In my tests, it is now one of the best for calls in noisy places.
You really need to use an Android flagship with LDAC codec and high bitrate enabled in developers options to get the best sound out of these XM5s. Using iPhone that supports AAC bluetooth codecs doesn't do justice with the quality of these earbuds.
I always like your reviews for the honest opinions. I have been considering purchasing the Sony earbuds but after seeing the video I shall definitely save my money for now
These are without doubt, and easily the best sounding earbuds out right now. Sep 2023. Forget the airpods 2 pro. The senheissers. The Bose. Etc etc. These have blown me away. The sound quality, the separation. The bass. Well done Sony. Another world beater
@@moonmancastro umm 🤔 the Bose are good. But not a patch on the Sony in my opinion. But sound is subjective. No matter how you look at it they're both better than air pods
I must agree at least in terms of them being better than the Apple AirPod Pro 2!! In fact I just returned my APP 2’s this morning and got the XM5’s because they sound so much better plus they have a little better ANC and 25% more battery which is VERY IMPORTANT for someone like myself because as a nearly 40 year old fully disabled (by VA definition) combat veteran who doesn’t have kids and isn’t married (I do have a fiance whom has been together with for well over 11 years and engaged for 3 1/2 years) however I do suffer from SEVERE TINNITUS which I got from my time in both the Air Force fueling/hot pitting F-16 and A-10 Warthogs (hot pits is when they fly around, land, taxi over to you and refuel as they’re still running and then immediately take back off again. Plus during my stint in the army before they forced me to retire via a medical discharge from an MEB or Medical Evaluation Board. Anyways, my point is I wear mine ALL DAY/EVERY DAY. Literally the ONLY TIME I am not wearing them is when they’re charging or I’m taking a shower. So the longer the battery life, THE BETTER!!!
Hi Mark after using apple products since more than over 30 years, the last 3-4 years I`ve been a little bit disappointed with the quality with all kinds of airpods. Yes, they look cool, stylish and easy to use out of the box. But they never fit my ears, even with aftermarket ear tips. Every day they slipped out of my ears, had to search them… Each Airpods either pro or max started with crackling noise issues, bluetooth interruptions, and at the end a constantly squaking noise without any sound after 12-18 months. I never had the promised sound experience with them. Airpods max made a perfect job with ANC. So I had to switch my favorite brand. Airpods max to B&W Px7se. Ingenious. Airpods pro 1 and 2 gave up, no Apple Support… Switched to XM5. Yes I know wearing comfort is individually, but they fit much better, ANC is nearly perfect, Sound is great. First I didn`t like the touch gestures, but after two day I managed it. My conclusion after over 30 years using Apple products: other brands did their homework and made a really good job. I had issues with the WH-1000XM5 and also with the WF-1000XM4-s ANC. I have a small head and small ears, the WH-1000XM5 was so big it didnt create any pressure, therefore the ANC was really bad, worse than the WH-1000XM3. I wondered how could that be, and figured it was a fit problem, when i pushed the headphones on my head it was really good, but when i loosened the pressure with my hands the ANC didnt work properly. It was similar with my WF-1000XM4, no tips in the box could do a proper seal, It was like there was no ANC turned on, just like in your case it was just a little bit muffled. I bought simple silicone tips, and ANC was working properly after finding a right size and fit. Now I have aftermarket foam tips, and at the gym i barely hear the music even if i turn my music off. I dont think this saves sony, because I had to buy 3rd party accessory to enjoy the full performance of the buds, but cant say ANC is bad. Im looking forward to buy the WF-1000XM5-s later on, also there are graphs where people objectively measure the ANC performance, and it looks good.
Found the answer, absolutely terrible, there's no wind noise cancelling, with noise cancelling on it couldn't even cancel the wind noise of a fan. I bought Sennheiser MTW4, perfect wind noise cancelling with Ani wind mode, can ride a motorcycle! And sounds amazing too.... It's sounds amazes me every time!
I'm trying my second pair of these. I have to agree. Sound quality is good. But, anc is poor. Voices leak through rather loudly. My WF-1000XM4's were better. Im sending it back.
i’ve had the opposite experience. Literally A/B tested the airpods pro 2 and the xm5 in a restaurant. the Sony’s definitely cancelled more low to mid frequencies whereas the airpods cancelled out a balanced amount of all frequencies
Thanks for the review Have ordered the technics az80s Waiting on them arriving Had the sennheiser tw3 buds They stopped working after a few months Have Bose Sony and B&W over ears headphones all good 😅What I don’t get is people saying the AirPod pro 2 noise cancelling being really good!!!?? I think it’s only average at best Anyone else think this? The anc is rubbish on airpodpro 2 in my opinion Thanks for the video
Bought these on launch. The noise cancellation is pretty poor tbh but the sound is absolutely brilliant, I couldn’t get a really good fit with the foam tips so bought the spinfit 360 silicone tips which are super comfortable and give you a great seal. It blows my mind that people value anc over the actual sound, it’s a pair of earphones, surely sound should take priority over anything else? Bottom line, these sound a lot better than my airpod pro2s but have inferior anc which is not a problem when you have the music playing as they sound that good you can’t hear anything from the outside world anyway.
Not sure what went on with your pair. I also own the air pods pro 2 and Bose QC2. The Sonys have way way better ANC than the AirPods and very close to the QC2 , QC2 still the king by a tiny bit.
Did someone have a chance to compare those with Galaxy Buds 2 Pro on Android device ? I'm mentioning Android as I thing LDAC is the biggest benefit of Sony's/
Mark, nice review. I totally agree. The noise cancelling is very very disappointing. I am in communication with Sony presently having returned them once for the above reason. The app. which measures the quality of the fit continually advises that the tips maybe too small, I am using the largest tips! Bose Ultra work a treat straight out of the box. I am also happy with the cheaper Jabra Elite 10. Not in the same league as the Bose but not bad.
Have you managed to try a non-review set? Apparently Sony sent reviewers prototype units that were not fully ready. More recent reviews praise the ANC!
i got mine about a week ago, the noise cancelling was pretty much non-existent, and the transparency/ambient mode was also garbage. I returned it immediately. I suspect the headphone I got is defective. I might get another one after I get my refund to see whether that's true. Because if it's not defective, my airpods pro is like 20 times better in every way.
I'm sorry bro but I don't believe at all that the active noise canceling on the XM5 is bad. You are probably the only person on all of RUclips that has said this so far and I feel as though maybe because you used a review pair of headphones there was an issue with them. I've tried the XM4s and the fives and the noise canceling is insane. It does an excellent job cutting out all of the noise regardless of whether you're on a plane or in a coffee shop. I'm shocked to hear that you had such a bad experience. I did notice you putting them in your ears throughout the video without compressing the tips first. If you don't compress them in advance this is likely why you had a bad seal which led to a bad ANC experience.
I don't care so much for noise cancelling, and my two year old Sony XM3 still work great for me. NC is only so-so but the audio quality is still fantastic. Big and bulky, yes, but I'm used to them and don't find them too uncomfortable.
Really like mine too, but they like to disconnect for no reason, and I have used them so much the battery has worsened. Looking for a replacement is really hard!
@@brownbreadinc127 If you can afford them, I highly recommend (as does Mark) the Apple AirPods Pro 2. Great sound, comfortable, stay in place, great NC. (I have a pair of those as well as the Sony XM3's.
I’ve had the XM3s and XM4s, but those developed a battery issue. Tried these out in a shop and they sounded ok, but based on reviews I was expecting more. The sub bass extension feels a bit limited (tested by playing Evanescence - Sweet Sacrifice). Maybe my expectations were higher than they should have been, based on the reviews. But also, the ergonomics are a bit worse for me than the XM4s. These are more “slippery”. So I’m actually looking into Sennheiser’s Momentum TW3 now. They’re cheaper and Darko Audio found them to be better than the XM4s and the AirPods Pro 2s. It does have a bigger case though. I think I’ll check what Apple is going to do tomorrow, and then decide.
I've got the sennheiser, don't bother, funnily enough I had to return my xm4s for the same reason! I'll never buy apple but I'm seriously considering the bose.
I was also very disappointed from the ANC coming from the AirPods Pro 1. Gen, they are so much Better but Soundwise goodbye Apple. Getting used to these foam tips is a struggle for me tho
You got new headphones but they were technically used? I have the AirPod pros and the pro max’s, and I have to disagree. The pro max is 10x better than the earbuds. I don’t hear any bass in the earbuds and too much highs with little to no adjusting to your liking. I’m thinking of trying the Sonys or the Bose quiet comforts.
Mark, i really think that you should consider trying the Liberty 4 NC, by Anker. Strong noise cancelling, good controls, amazing battery. Also, might i add, the sound out of the box is the ultimate basshead v shaped signature, which i dislike. However, it is possible to EQ it, and invert it's curvature, turning it into a super clean detailed sound. Really think you should give them a try, even though it's a lot cheaper than the ones you mentioned.
Doesn’t look like you squeeze to alley then expand in your ear? Not sure if that matters? Love the channel and this video! I’m going to stick with APP2
@@MarkEllisReviewsYou’re supposed to squeeze them and let them expand in your ear. It’s a huge difference. A pain in the arse but still, very important
Did Mark, say that someone had them before him? Stuck in their ears? Mate, I hope you did clean them properly before using them for your own review. UGH! I can think of nothing worse, to freak me out.
You must have not got a good deal. Because the noise canceling on these elbows away air pods pro 2s. Makes them look like pixel buds lmao. The xm5s are much better than the air pods pro 2 IMO. The only things that's better about the air pods is transparency, and volume control.
I think we will eventually find that Sony will have to admit they have got this wrong. Unfortunately, in my case it looks like its going to be long slog to get my money back. If I ever do. I suspect better designed or larger tips would have avoided the problem.
yet another youtuber that fails to understand the noise cancelling wavelength sony is attempting. it doesnt cancel noise at speech frequencies on purpose. its a design feature. it cancelles ambient noise and lets in voice patterns otherwise its unsafe. they actually have documents ive seen in design schematics explicitly saying this. the noise cancelling is actually better for lower and higher frequencies than any other headphones. which is most of what im worried about and causes hearing damage.
It is hard to listen to a reviewer that only have apple products surrounding him, these buds is great over all especially to android, apple as we all know isolate themselves with apple products only so it is natural that other than their products all other products will be suck, so your review is not accurate at all. Thank you for another video on you tube
@MarkEllisReviews Yes, when you review the XM5, you are looking for a replacement for your AirPods Pro 2. I know you know for yourself that there is nothing on the market that can match the AirPods Pro if you are an Apple user. Of course, the AirPods Pro 2 are much better than other buds if you are using an Apple device and within the Apple ecosystem. Unfortunately, you reviewed the XM5 while you were within the Apple ecosystem, and you did not try the buds on an Android device.
@@MarkEllisReviews Fair enough and I take back the last sentence. I do own both though and for ANC it is not even close, the Bose buds are amazing at cancelling noise. Overall package though, sound quality usability etc is another debate.

😅What I don’t get is people saying the AirPod pro 2 noise cancelling being really good!!!?? I think it’s only average at best Anyone else think this? The anc is rubbish on airpodpro 2 in my opinion Thanks for the video
Can the ANC be updated with a software release or is it hardware related
Tried it as did Sony themselves when I sent them back. No difference.
I had the Airpods Pro 2 and i find my XM5's ANC to be superior.
Maybe the eartips fit my ears perfectly.
Not even close for me.
Well i did heard the noise outside, so i would say they are pretty bad cancelling out, outside noise 😢
If you don't compress them in advance this is likely why you had a bad seal which led to a bad ANC experience.
for the pricepoint, the Soundcore Liberty 4 NC's are quite good
I don't care so much for noise cancelling, and my two year old Sony XM3 still work great for me.
@@brownbreadinc127replacing the battery costs $20. True that it has minor connections for me though
How about using them in the ear over a long period? I used the xm4 and over a few hours they start to be a lil uncomfortable
Sony needs better naming conventions than using model numbers as their product names. They don't exactly roll off the tongue
Sony or jabra 10 elite?
I was also very disappointed from the ANC coming from the AirPods Pro 1. Gen, they are so much Better but Soundwise goodbye Apple.
Getting used to these foam tips is a struggle for me tho
What about the Bose QC2?
Haven't tried them yet!
Noise cancelling on these earbuds is scary good
Mark, i really think that you should consider trying the Liberty 4 NC, by Anker.
Nope - you pop these straight in (squeezing would be a pain each time).
@@MarkEllisReviewsYou’re supposed to squeeze them and let them expand in your ear. It’s a huge difference. A pain in the arse but still, very important
If u look for best ANC try bose earbuds qc 2
Very nice video
Thanks!
Thank you so much. Just saved me 300 dollars. I’ll stick with my AirPods. Thank you
I think we will eventually find that Sony will have to admit they have got this wrong.
The Bose earbuds are terrific at noise cancelling and comfortable.
Yourself like most reviewers fail to mention that only the Sony's XM5 allow you to listen to Hi-Res music
Great review waiting for its availability in India
Lol, air pod pro 2 as gold standard.
Indeed they are. Glad you agree.
just bought the sonys, my 10 year old bose are better.
Saved me £250, thank you.
These earphones are ment to be eq adjusted i own them too very nice earphones great sound great everything else
Sony is the king! :)
Not better than air pods2 Apple is louder and better sound quality
It is hard to listen to a reviewer that only have apple products surrounding him, these buds is great over all especially to android, apple as we all know isolate themselves with apple products only so it is natural that other than their products all other products will be suck, so your review is not accurate at all. Thank you for another video on you
tube
You might want to take a look at most of my videos from 2024, mate.
@MarkEllisReviews well your review on XM5 are not from this year right?
Eh? I'm referring to your comment about me having "Apple products surrounding him".
If you think that AirPods Pro 2 are the gold standard for ANC earbuds then you are also late to the Bose QC earbuds 2 party.
An opinion isn't "wrong", Neil - grow up.
@@MarkEllisReviews Fair enough and I take back the last sentence. I do own both though and for ANC it is not even close, the Bose buds are amazing at cancelling noise. Overall package though, sound quality usability etc is another debate.
So they provided you service getting rid of an overpriced crapple product.
Eh?
All lies you’ve clearly been paid by apple
*Apple. And this video isn’t sponsored or funded in any way by Apple - if it was, I’d have to explicitly state that was the case. No one’s out to get you mate, chill out. You’re safe.
@@MarkEllisReviews yeah you would say that your on RUclips to make money and that’s a fact Ive owned both and there ain’t a speck of apple air pods pro 2 that’s better then wf1000xm5
@@aabc84 *you’re. And you are absolutely right - I’m on RUclips to make money; it’s my business (kid needs to eat, etc). I also completely respect your opinion on these Sony buds. Try accepting opinions that differ to your own, buddy - it makes the world a better place.
@@MarkEllisReviews no one agrees with your lies it’s not a opinion when your clearly a liar
How do they compare to the sennheiser momentum 4's ?
Are these better than their predecessors, the Sony WF-1000XM4?
