You have the most wonderful listening voice ever. I listened to you with the Harry Potter books and spent a whole weekend lieing in bed not being able to stop listening, glorious man you are ❤
I was just going to say Stephen Fry's voice is so nice and relaxing
Spook season 👻🖤🔥🎃
Such a fantastic storyteller and actor!!!! :) he’s incredible! :) there is no one out there like him :) truly unique and marvellous in every way! :) I could listen to him all day long! :)
He was horrible doing HP with the odd breathing. No one beats Dale.
Our lord and master, Stephen Fry narrating ghost stories??? I'm in!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤
Santa’s early this year 😮
@@StillGamingTM Abso-fuckin-lutely!!😊😊😊😊😊
What a unique human being 👍✌️ cheers Stephen 🍀🍀
I can’t think of anyone better then Stephen Fry to recommend books.
Yes. Now I know that there were other Bram Stoker books!
100% agree! He is responsible for the best review ever of the Da Vinci Code: ruclips.net/video/aIjrUFpx8Cc/видео.html
I'll take recommendations from anyone who isn't friends with transphobes.
I was a hip, nihilistic non believer until I moved out of the city to an old farm workers cottage in the countryside and had a very close encounter with a 'ghost' in my bedroom.
I love Stephen Fry, such a warm and wonderful human being, a true treasure
"the Ash tree" by M.R. James. That one gave me the major willies.
My Nan read that to me as a young lad, I credit her with my life long love of ghost stories
The Stalls of Barchester is another. But whistle and I'll come to you, my lad. did scare me.
@@RussinTirnaNog Oh Whistle and I'll Come To You My Lad has got to be one of his creepiest
An Epissode of Cathedrall History for me and Count Magnus
I swear. Stephen Fry could read a restaurant menu and I would enjoy listening to him.
Even your tie looks gloriously gothic to me. Beautiful. 👻
Algernon Blackwoods The Wendigo is my personal favorite of his catalog.
Whistle and I Will Come to You. With Michael Hordern.
Fry is a legend.
M R James - Count Magnus and O Whistle My Lad.
Always loved M R James. Best ghost stories ever written.
For me, ''Oh, Whistle, and I'll Come to You, My Lad'' is one of the greatest short (let alone horror) stories ever written.
Absolutely agree with you 😊👻
So much told, such tension, in so few pages. The man was a genius.
Love MR James. The Michael Hordern audiobooks are really good.
MR James’ The Rose Garden, and Le Fanu’s Dikon the Devil are my October favorites. MR James is my favorite and so many lonely and lonesome tales of terror and isolation…
Nice to see the Rose Garden receiving some love. I dismissed it for years but it's grown to be one of my favourites!
Being a devoted Poe fangirl, hearing my very favorite narrator of all time reading his works sounds like heaven.
I could listen to this man read the ingredients of a bottle of bleach like a kid at story time during school
M R James, the master of the art of the ghost story.
I have several different editions of his ghost stories - and I also listen to them on Audible when I go to bed. He really is one of the greats.
Adore M R James. I love the old television adaptations .
Yes, me too. Michael Hordern in Whistle and I'll come to you was fantastic, a great adaptation as well
James will forever be the master of horror writing. I challenge anyone to sit alone in a candlelit room and read him without feeling at least a little terrified
'The Haunted Doll's House' - truly chilling.
You could read the phone book to me and your voice would still be magic! 💕
Come up with something original please. Everyone says this on every thread Stephen is on.
I could listen to Stephen all day.
The only thing better than Stephen Fry's voice is Stephen Fry punching Hugh Laurie in the face. Stephen, you know intimately the joy of things that are *better than they need to be*. I adore you, now and always.
@JennyLane8666 : I just watched the Stephen Fry/Hugh Laurie Reunited documentary (it’s on RUclips) and it’s a virtual anthology of Hugh getting his lights punched out. Beautifully done, so funny, and they’re obviously having a ball.
"The Jolly Corner" by Henry James is my all-time favorite doppelganger story. "The Willows" is Algernon Blackwood's single greatest scary story.
I totally agree on those two selections, but especially The Willows. I've read and re-read it many times. It never ceases to amaze me that it gives me genuine shivers every time! Terrifying.
Anything Blackwood gets my vote.
Saki; “The Open Window”. Everything by Saki is wonderful.
Stephen Fry ❤ great actor 😊 Loved him in Sherlock Holmes 2 ! His voice is almost like if he was an uncle telling an old ghost story, very familiar and cozy 😊 Now I admire him more because he know and enjoy all the classics😊😊 Poe, Blackwood, Stevenson...
Stephan you are a Treasure! Never forget how much joy and light you bring to all.
A glorious 9.30 mins. Never change, Stephen.
Just mesmerised listening to Stephen’s book choices. Nearing the end I realised my chronic pain had calmed. Thankyou.
Being a fan of M R James and mr Stephen fry I bought the audible book and I wasn’t disappointed 👻 absolutely marvellous stuff, 👻👻
What a joy! More, please ❤❤❤
I don't know what is most delicious about this video, the exquisite selection of tales, or the honeyed tones of the inimitable Mr Fry describing them.
Victorian and Edwardian ghost stories are the best . M.R.James , Algernon Blackwood , J . Sheridan le Fanu , E. F . Benson , Arthur Machen are all great .
Me, too! Those are the best ghost stories, and you’ve named my favorite writers, especially Algernon Blackwood. We need a Victorian/Edwardian ghost story appreciation group.
Gorgeous tie, Mr. Fry.
Stephen Fry and books! There's no better pair.
Bingo! I’m from your generation and you’ve talked about my favourite books/authors, a lot of which I read when I was a teenager as well. Thank you!
A few stories by 'Saki' are worth mentioning, if not strictly ghost stories. 'Sredni Vashtar' and 'The Music on the Hill' are great dark stories; if you want darkness mixed with humor, 'Gabriel-Ernest' and 'The Open Window' are masterpieces of that genre.
The Blind Spot. The Open Window. Great author!!
Thanks for suggestion, wanted to try something of his for the long time.
Ahhhhh, the Open Window...wonderful story, excellent!!!
Thank you Stephen! You are both loved and appreciated.
One of the greatest speaking voices ever. He can read anything to me and I will listen all day long.
I've already read these haunting tales many times and have them collected on my bookshelves. I nonetheless purchased this audiobook because hearing Stephen Fry read these classic ghost stories is a delight I can't pass up. Now all I need is a stormy night, a cup of tea, and a fire on the heatth. 🎃👻🙂
Amazing. Stephen tells just enough, to make you interested.
Poe for sure. The Monkey's Paw by W.W. Jacobs (1902) is one I still find quote chilling. I think the 'resurrectionists' Burke and Hare killed some 16 people as part of their business model. Donating one's body to medical science wasn't a thing back then. A hanged criminal was an occasional legal source of material for medical school surgeons/lecturers. I'd imagine that some of the 'buyers' took note that many of the cadavers delivered were unusually fresh. Indeed, rigor mortis hadn't even set in yet. Respect to Master Fry from Ireland.
would like Stephen to do the collected mr James stories !
Excellent choices.
I would have been shocked had he not mentioned MR James. I first read his work when I was in high school. I have no idea how the school library in my small-town Ohio school acquired the book but I'm glad they did.
There are a few channels here on RUclips that specialize in narrating Victorian and early 20th century ghost stories. Even if that's not something you like, it's a good place to find good obscure authors and ghost stories. It's also a good place to find lesser known ghost stories written by famous authors like Lovecraft.
If Horrorbabble isn't one of the channels you're referring to, I highly recommend checking them out.
Can you recommend any good obscure writers ?
Greatest ghost stories ever written
Count Magnus
The Upper Berth
The Phantom Coach
The Signalman
The Stalls of Barchester Cathedral
Ohhhh, The Signalman. So simple and so good.
This man is brilliant, a national treasure!
A delightful batch of less lethal ghost stories can be found in “High Spirits” by Robertson Davies, first Master of Massey College.
I’m a huge fan of Davies and “High Spirits.” Poetic and hilarious!
I adore a good ghost story and I'm pleased to say I've read all of these. I have a particular soft spot for M.R. James. I agree he's the absolute master.
Best Halloween reading list! I love gaslight horror!
Wonderful choices….from the marvellous MR Fry ……a must ❤
This is a pleasant surprise and having paranormal experiences myself it's greatly appreciated to hear stories from credible witnesses. I do believe 90% of paranormal videos are fake but some are so unexplained that it's brilliant but when you experience something on a personal level it can be absolutely terrifying.
Love it!
I can't wait to check these out! And I love that tie!
He seems very pleasant and happy. It's good to see him not so grumpy.
Brilliant!
Thank you for these recommendations.
So elated for this. Thanks so much.
Every time I see Stephen Fry, I can't help but see the headmaster from Gormenghast
Honestly this was such a phenomenal treat: the curated stories, the performance, the production (amazing!). Please audible keep pairing up with Stephen!
E Nesbit wrote some excellent Ghost stories.
Good timing. Getting it now!
Thumbs up awesome 👌 👍
"The pages in front of you, yet to come " Swoon!!! Drool!!!! How to find the writer in the room.
Lovely man you are Stephen. Thanks for sharing some ghosty topics. Cheers
I too slept in the servants quarters of our Victorian house. No wonder I adore ghost stories so much!
First time listening to this video, and i am already love his voice.
I love ghost stories, but Stephen Fry could read my shopping list and I would pay to listen to his lovely voice. ❤️🇦🇺
This sounds like it will be an amazing experience! ❤
My favourite story is definitely ‘The Judge’s House.’
Me too 👻!
Rats, that's my favorite.
I've just purchased Algernon Blackwood's The Empty House. Thank you for the recommendations. I'll try the others next. I love your work, and listening to you talk.
Ghoulishly good introduction to some of the great ghost stories. I can't wait to follow up on Stephen Fry's listening list.
Oh man!! Sign me up!!
I love everything about this man. A true treasure of our human species.
I enjoy James Herbert.
I absolutely adore you Stephen. You are a joy and the best narrator and I think you’re awesome.❤️
This man is a treasure.
No one can scare me with his scary eyeballs more than Stephen Fry! The way those eyeballs look at you!!!
Much though I enjoyed Stephen's discussion about the stories, I wish that he'd have read a short story at the end of his speech. I appreciate that he's trying to sell as many audio books as possible, but including one small story at the end may have increased interest in the Ghost Stories book.
WAS WONDERFUL!! His narration, of course, but also the stories and the accompanying sound design. I hope he releases another prior to next Halloween.
I think it will be a treat to hear Stephen Fry read ghost stories. Three of these (The Empty House, The Judge's House, and The Body Snatcher) can also be found in The Haunted Looking Glass, a collection of ghost stories selected by artist Edward Gorey, that master of creepy illustrations. The collection includes stories by Charles Dickens, Edith Nesbit, Wilkie Collins, M.R. James, and others. I had a copy when I was a child, and loved both the stories and the drawings by Mr Gorey at the beginning of each. Amazon carries a reasonably-priced reprint edition.
By the way, if you like funny ghost stories, Canadian author Robertson Davies published a collection of 6 titled High Spirits. He wrote them to entertain his graduate students each Halloween (he taught literature at the U of Toronto). I never actually read them in print: only listened to an audio version on cassette tape, read (quite charmingly) by Christopher Plummer.
Here comes Audible, trying to lure me back...😂😂😂
Poe was a psychological writer rather than a "ghost story" writer. Quite odd. My favorite ghost story is Henry James' "The Jolly Corner," although it has to be read in silence, preferably with a nice glass of wine.
Thanks for telling me about "The Judge's House!" I'll read it.
...at night...
Got my copy of your 👻stories on Audible US🇺🇸.
Rats are bogeys and bogeys are rats…The Judge’s House is my favourite!
One minute in and I'm hoping for some M.R. James
I would love to hear cooperation of Stephen Fry and Ian Gordon (Horror Babble).
We read The Cask of Amontillado as high schoolers. I didn't appreciate it then but I do know as an adult.
I think I'll get this with my next credit.
This sounds great! I remember a series of ghost stories on BBC R4, years ago, introduced, if memory serves, by Edgar Lustgarten, who had an audio owl called Lucifer.. Anyone out there as old as I am? 🦉⭐👍
Red Room by H G Wells.
❤
1 of the greatest modern ghost story writers of our day is Tom Slemen, plus hes a fellow scouser
Wonderful❤❤❤
Edwardian era?
M R James and Algernon Blackwood wrote the stories included in the Edwardian era. But the James one - Lost Hearts - might be set in the Victorian period, I'm not sure. I love the ghost stories of the early 20th Century, as well as the weird stories of the twenties to forties.
How could you leave out the Canterville Ghost?
imagine Fry reading HP Lovecraft!
I would read the phone book if Stephen Fry recommended it
And that's how you sell a book. That's advertising done right.
I actually read the Judge's House in a Wishbone book....anybody remember that series LOL?
Well it’s not a Victorian story but I was born in 1952 and grew up in a haunted house in Lynn, MA. I’m hoping to write the ghost story ….
