I love reading the comments on any sisters song because they're full of goths in their 50s reminiscing on being goth back in the 80s and i find it so cool

Hugs, mate.... We are same age... 1970 the best breed! Greetings from Germany.... and I guess.you know he sang German.... Lemme cite and translate that German part - it has soo much deepness, so intense, a way much more intense than the English part, it still makes me cry with tears....ok lets go.... "was ich kann und was ich könnte.... ich weiß ich kann nicht mehr.... gib mir wieder etwas Schönes, zieh mich aus dem Meer... Ich hör Dich rufen, Marian, kannst Du mich schreien hören, ich bin hier allein.... Ich hör Dich rufen, Marian.. ohne Deine Hilfe verlier ich mich in dieser Welt".... Wow... let's translate it... "What I can and what I could, I know I cant anymore.... give me a nice thing again, pull me out of the sea... I hear you calling, Marian, can you hear me crying, I'm here alone... I hear you calling, Marian, .. without your help I trail off in this world.". ... I hope I got it. Cheers from a 70'er to a 70'er. Cheers.

My name is Maria. My 31yo son sent this to me one night at around 4am. I had woken up for some reason and checked my phone and there was the song In a text from him..it was so strange... especially bc he prefers rap (but when he was little he loved Sisters) and has always fought our music.
I asked if he was ok and he said he was and just liked the song. I told him I was there for him..... now everytime I hear the song I think of him calling for me in the middle of night.

'Marian I think I'm drowning' 'I hear you calling Marian' To me Marian was not a person but death. And to this day it still represents that. The song of my tortured youth and goth days. It helped me when nothing else would and no one could. Still gives me shivers 20 odd years later.

    ▪ Sisters of Mercy ▪ Marian ▪
In a sea of faces, in a sea of doubt
In this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom
In the wake of this ship of fools I'm falling further down
If you can see me, Marian, reach out and take me home.....
    I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
    I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the
    Grave...
    Marian
Marian, there's a weight above me
And the pressure is all too strong
    To breathe deep
    Breathe long and hard
To take the water down and go to sleep
    To sink still further
    Beneath the fatal wave
    Marian I think I'm drowning
    This sea is killing me
    I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
    I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the
    Grave...

Some Kind Of Stranger is one of my best Sisters Of Mercy songs ever, I think I like Marian (of course including the German part (we all know why?)) even more! So deep, doom, dark, gothic; just a perfect nostalgice gothic-wave song. These two songs and Alice, Lights and Body And Soul are my personal favorites (not to forget Body Electric '84, Kiss The Carpet, Temple Of Love, Heartland and Adrenochrome to complete my personal top 10 of this very unique 'New Wave' band of the eighties). My love for this unique kind of music, esspecialy the Sisters Of Mercy will never die; I purely enjoying it still!!!

+john withers The way I read +Mark Dunbar's comment, he missed this song somehow when he was 20 years old. And now at the age of 45, he has just found this song for the first time, and finds it amazing. ~~~All of that goes for me, anyway. Except I am 50....

In a sea of faces, in a sea of doubt
In this cruel place your voice above the maelstrom
In the wake of this ship of fools I'm falling further down
If you can see me, Marian, reach out and take me home.....
    [CHORUS]
    I hear you calling Marian
Across the water, across the wave
    I hear you calling Marian
Can you hear me calling you to
Save me, save me, save me from the
    Grave...
    Marian
Marian, there's a weight above me
And the pressure is all too strong
    To breathe deep
    Breathe long and hard
To take the water down and go to sleep
    To sink still further
    Beneath the fatal wave
    Marian I think I'm drowning
    This sea is killing me
    [CHORUS]
Was ich kann und was ich könnte
(What I can do and what I could do)
    Weiß ich gar nicht mehr
    (I just don't know anymore)
    Gib mir wieder etwas Schönes
    (Give me something beautiful again)
    Zieh mich aus dem Meer
    (Drag me from the sea)
    Ich höre dich rufen, Marian
    (I hear you calling Marian)
    Kannst du mich schreien hören
    (Can you hear me calling?)
    Ich bin hier allein
    (I am here alone)
    Ich höre dich rufen, Marian
    (I hear you calling Marian)
Ohne deine Hilfe verliere ich mich in diesem Ort
(Without your help I am lost in this place)
    [CHORUS]
    [repeat Marian til end]
