Blind side backing into small warehouse

- This was a fun, if not slightly challenging docking job for a sleeper cab with 53ft trailer, if you ask me. Good setups are critical to making even seemingly difficult backings look much easier than they really are. There were a couple of times where I would have GOAL'd to be sure of my setups if it hadn't been for the fact my trainee/cameraman was also spotting for me and clearing me with a thumb up in the two spots where I would have otherwise GOAL'd if this were done solo.
When doing blind side entries, I make liberal use of adjusting my right flat mirror in order to maximize my ability to see that side. I also lean far forward in the seat to aid that, though I still rely more on my convex and spot mirrors to give me a wider perspective view.
EDIT: In an effort to help reduce the likelihood of commenters asking the same question that has already been answered more than once, there are good reasons why I chose to blind side this rather than attempt a straight back or sight side procedure.
1. Straight back: it was not possible to perform a straight back procedure. The driveway across the street was blocked by a gate. A Freymiller driver who docked in before me tried to do exactly this. His trailer didn't even come close to getting enough angle toward the receiver's driveway to allow for him to even "walk" his tractor more to the right to create the necessary angle. The 4-wheelers parked on the receiver's side of the street also took away a lot of space that could have otherwise been used to make a straight back setup more likely to be possible.
2. For sight side backing, the 4-wheeler parked on the sight side end of the driveway is closer to the end of the driveway than the 4-wheeler parked on the blind side end of the driveway is. With this being a cul-de-sac, it is necessary to allow the trailer to do ALL of the work on its own without "helping" it rotate more quickly with counter-steering. Counter-steering would have just caused the tractor to run out of space to work with, or would have otherwise caused the tractor and/or front of the trailer to run into one of the 4-wheelers that were parked across the street from the receiver. Since the 4-wheeler on the blind side end of the driveway was further from the driveway than the sight side 4-wheeler was, it also meant there was more room to work with for the trailer to rotate blind side into the driveway than for a sight side backing. The amount of extra usable rotate space likely isn't as apparent in the video as it was in person. The fact I started my setup turn a bit early and didn't get the tandems to enter the driveway closer to the blind side curb don't help to illustrate how much different the space to work with was also.
3. I was already waiting in the street from the blind side position while Freymiller unloaded. Between the fact I have confidence in my blind siding skills and the fact I would have had to exit the cul-de-sac, go back around several blocks to return for a sight side setup, plus know that day cab drivers with pup trailers were also occasionally coming in and completely blocking the driveway to unload their own freight....blind siding it in was just a no brainer decision to make, as far as I was concerned.
Warehouses like that should be illegal that's just nuts but it is all apart of the game great job
B Amos85 play the game , never let the game play you..
B Amos85 Why should it be illegal? This was an easy back. Especially with my day cab.
Damn it would had made me nervous.
When I hauled for WHOLE FOODS up in the northeast, some of our stores were old A&P buildings, loading dock areas were built in the 50's & 60's for 40' trailers we use to have to go in with 53' talk about tight fits.. But it's all in a days work. Also a lot of stores in & around Boston that aren't made for the new trailers
@@donaldbartram6315 ..Get a right hand drive truck...It handy hear in Ireland ...There a few around that have no problem with what we call blind side reversing ..
Truckers aren't paid enough.
You got that right!
We need to fight back!
It is not worth it any more to drive big equipment.
This why I quit driving (professionally) and work for the gov't now!!
MUCH better pay!!
Al Lopez you got that right...I make .50 cpm, he did a great job backing that ....he nailed it.
This is painful to watch, especially with that little pickup right there. That was a double blindsided back...Simply phenomenal!!!!!
You my friend are a PROFESSIONAL TRUCK DRIVER.
I respect what you saying but it takes a lot more than that to be a truck driver
lots of room.plus go down street turn around and back in on your good side stupid to blind side when you. dont have too
Good job, man! 👍 I've been driving for CRE for 6 years. I am very skilled in backing up but not sure if I woulda tried this one. You rock!!
I've come to the conclusion this is probably Crash And Roll England's best driver they have. They need to keep this guy at all cost and hats off to the drive good job.
Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately for them, I left for greener - to me - pastures after 2 full years with them. They treated me well, and I got good experience from both OTR and dedicated fleet driving with them. I actually enjoyed my time particularly in the Walmart dedicated fleet, but the auto-shift transmissions were already hard enough for me to tolerate. When they started to disable Manual mode from all of their trucks and I got a critical event for hard braking in a situation where the truck's stupid collision avoidance system caused the hard braking event needlessly...I decided that enough was enough. I wanted to go back to driving something with a manual transmission and was able to lease a truck with a 10-speed manual and which doesn't have any of those stupid safety "features" with JCT.
@ I agree 100% regarding having computers do that. If drivers would do what they're supposed to be doing - not following so closely and actually paying attention... that system would never be necessary.
Years ago I saw an England driver that looked like Steve Martin. Anyway, that was some nice backing for blind side. Well done, driver!
The 86 people who disliked this video all have a hard time parallel parking their Hyundais 😅
lol Loving this comment. In reality, I bet at least half the dislikes were from people who just can't bring themselves to like anything good posted by a then-CR England driver.
Yes.... and I’ll add, half the the drivers who liked it couldn’t do it either....I am one of those drivers that liked , but couldn’t do it.
I am learning to be truck driver. Apparently the straight backing is very tough never mind 45 and 90 degrees of backing. And this shows wealth of experience on the job.
A 50 ft wide entrance, I'm not impressed. See some minor faults. Try it with a 15 ft entrance and cars parked on either side of the road and I might change my thumb.
Or Mini Cooper
He had the truck on reverse the whole time without any need to level up. Props to the driver.
He's been to this place before many times. I know. Because, if this was the first time, I would park outside and walk in to have a look and see which dock I am backing in and also if there is a dock available. Good job, by the way, nonetheless.
Thanks for the great compliment. This was actually the one and only time that I've ever been to the customer shown here. You did give excellent advice for others in your comment, however. Anytime you have a customer remotely like this - it really pays to get out of your truck, walk around the entire area and get a good visual idea and "feel" for exactly what kind of space you have in which places to work with and where any obstacles are.
In this case, I had to walk into their property to check in with the receiver. I scouted out the layout both on the way in and on the way out, plus the receiving manager also suggested I back into the lot and to the door exactly like you see here. Other viewers have asked why I didn't just straight back into the lot from the driveway across the street or why I didn't go down the street, turn around and attempt to enter the lot sight side. I have good explanations for all of that in the description for this video.
@@ScottZane all I can say is "EXCELLENT JOB!!" I am thoroughly impressed and hope to have this skillset some day!
@@ScottZane no way this was your first time i dont care how many years ypu been driving. ass s a driver you still have to get out at nd check your backing space and obstacles..dont flatter your self amd make other drivers less.
@@ScottZane then why were you filming?
@@mattcribbin1570 Does it matter? I had my trainee record this for me because it's not a typical kind of customer for an OTR driver to go to, if you really must know.
That was a Double-blinding dock. Thanks for sharing this video
This company's dock setup was not made for a semi sleeper with a 53ft trailer but, a pup trailer would have DEFINITELY been more suitable. To put a driver through this type of FOOLISHNESS is just plain RIDICULOUS! However, YOU earned your CDL's driver no doubt about that! GREAT JOB SIR!👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👌🏾👍🏾❤💯
A double blind side, this guy knows what he’s doing
Thats what I call.. Backing up….You got my Respect Sir :!!!
I am amazed at these truckers’ ability to backup, parallel parking, etc. I have been driving for 30 yrs and still couldn’t parallel parking to save my life.
I have a parallel parking video here on my channel that might help you. It's actually easy to do, if you learn the steps and when to look in what direction.
Double blind side back with only 2 pull ups in minimal space. That was impressive.
For those of you who think all England, Swift, CRST, Western Express, etc. drivers are all the same. By definition, that makes you prejudice. Damn fine job and a beautiful back.
Thank you so much for filming and posting this excellent video!!! I have to do an off the street blind side 2moro and I was so concerned! This video helps me think about how I will set up after I scout the layout in person. I feel less afraid and more confident. Not overly confident lol! But half the battle is the set up and other half is one part confidence and one part humility. I can't THANK YOU ENOUGH!!! Now I can get a little sleep too lol
You're very welcome! You're right that 90% of the difficulty with backings is in the effectiveness of your setup. Let me know how your backing turns out later. Best of luck!
He did a great job backing that....there’s not alot of drivers that can back on a dock like that...I think I could though...I’m good under pressure like that it’s a challenge for me and I love challenges like that. It motivates me. I picture it in my mind after I GOAL ( Get Out And Look) then put it in there...I’m ex military, I was a 88 mike in the Army (truck driver). I trained most of my squad to do backing maneuvers similar to this. But we were also paratroopers too (11 bravos) my main job (MOS) was fueler (77 whiskey). We delivered food, fuel, water, and ammo to soldiers in remote locations. He did a really great job in backing that in.
I'm retired USAF myself. I was a heavy aircraft mechanic, and all of the time I spent towing large airplanes helped a lot with my truck backing skills. But honestly, I think a lot of this stuff is just basic physics and a good bit of "common" sense too.
that would take me like 45 minutes and I would be sweating hard lol good job
Same.
Just say NO.... well I'm retired and had my OWN Authority.
It was an easy blind side. He had plenty of room. If it was between two trailers at a dock. Than yeah, it’s difficult!
it's is easy to me,,get 45 degree before you enter into the small warehoure,,,it's just a simple backing
it's not hard for me
You know funny thing with my backing, if its a extremely difficult one, i handle them real well. When its a wide open space i loose my bearings. I just dont understand it... lol🤷🏽♂️
Hassan H lol me to. Be surprised when I one shot in a tight space but give me all the room and I’m halfway into the next parking space
Hassan H my life story 😂
REZ Transport LLC I feel you there I’m the same way the harder the spot to get into the better I am but the more space I got the more I suck lol
I’m the exactly like that to crazy isn’t it
Its becuz in tight space you can use the ubsticales as guides..in open space you dont have much guide lins
What a great job that guy did. Nice to see drivers that no what the hell there doing. I just recently retired and there are to many out there that have no business being behind the wheel.
we find and link to trucking stories that are funny, inspirational, teaching and just down right off the chain.
That’s why I love my power mirrors, it’s a breeze when having to blind side.
Just goes to show, no matter what company you work for there's always somebody better than you. Nice skinning old buddy
This guy has obviously done this more then a few time🤣🤣😜
Yes it is my friend...
@@marcocamberos7470 local drivers they know how to do all these because they practice all day long doing this
For sure, but nevertheless a job well done
Yeah he or she must do this daily or wkly!
That's call skills.
Thought getting through the polls was the hard part then the gate 🤔 but hitting the bumpers hats off sir 👏 job well done
That was Fabulous to watch! 🙌🏾👊🏾
I had a 98 Vovlo 770 new. Blindsiding was a piece of cake. Between the mirror and the right bunk window, I could see the back of the trailer all the way around. Almost like backing a day cab.
Believe me backing is not easy even the most experience driver can have an accident.
That's the kind of backing that's done when you do LTL. Great job.
Joe Harris I believe it too. While i was still on the street waiting for a Freymiller driver to finish unloading first, i saw at least 2-3 day cabbers pulling single pups pull in. With pup trailers being much shorter and much more maneuverable, they all seemed to have a very easy time backing into the lot.
I remember watching this video before I started trucking and thinking wow this guy is a master and now I am that master
You should receive back up pay !! Lol
Like in ets2
Experience speaks. This guy means business.
Just got my license a couple of months ago. Knowing I'm going to have to back into spots like this makes me shit bricks lol
Not too many places like this if u go with a decent company
Trust me guy you will u can count on it I am retired professional driver, after 38 years without an accident if u can t c it, don't guess , my motorcycle rfm.
Nice job! I do wish we could have seen more of the entire truck as you were backing. Again, well done!
Bravo! Outstanding SKILL and split second awareness ...in a new location.
As soon there’s no traffic around you. You own the spot. And take you time...
Why is this guy wasting his talent driving for England I retired from walmart over 90 k a year you can have my truck
I only Blind side only if I have no choice like this driver, well done.
No problem. ...I do it all the time ...
45 years behind the belt and proud
I'm a city driver, good job to this guy! If places didn't have all that crap laying around we'd have enough room to just go in and see sight that back. Would have been no need for this b/s.
From out side it looks easy. But from drivers view. Almost no visibility. Good job mate
I think this guy has been to this place before but still REALLY impressive
First and only time that I was ever there
For a C.R. England driver to do this blind-side backing so smoth. Hats off to them. smoth as a yard jockey could do after thousands of backing...
No spotter, no pull ups. Straight boss moves
I saw two pull ups but still very good
trainee camera man was the spotter
He has that new "3-D double back-up" camera option that comes with the trailer! LOL
The line up is EVERYTHING!
Skills pay bills.
That's a double blind side backing!
First from off the main drag then almost continuously right into a second blind side backing up to the warehouse door.
I guess that this driver has been to this place a time or two before.
Nice job as long as nothing gets tore up.
Wow my respect to him as a fellow trucker
All of this for $0.32 a mile
b. s.
kobe arama some places pay 60 com like z transportation.
Hopefully they make $2000 a week.
Lol
I started at $.45 per mile now making over a dollar per mile as a owner operator
@@hotlapassassin9434 You should be making $2 a mile for an owner opp but that is the only way to do it. Own your own truck.
What a judgement - skill !
Good job, I think he runs this route daily, that is why he can make it at first intent, if not he must go down and look, but doesn't mean it is easy, so he deserves a good credit.
Not a regular there. In fact, it was the first and only time that I've ever been there. I did scout out the property layout while checking in before I did this backing though.
Nice example of steady driving, well done driver. It would be pretty though on a wet day. There are truck drivers and there are people who drive trucks. That's an example of a truck driver 😎
They should at least have a mandatory helper at this place
Awesome. I would have gotten out 35x and it would have definitely taken me up to an hour.... But I am just starting CDL training school lol.
The most difficult dock I've ever seen.. amazing driver
Very impressive..he is a good dam driver..that took time to back in to a small Warehouse... whoever that driver was... Freaking good job...
That driver is me. My (at the time) trainee was recording it for me. This backing was performed at Seaport Meat Co in Spring Valley, CA. I appreciate your support and taking the time to watch and enjoy the video!
That is a great job, I can do it with a daycab but not like you did this, hats off great job !!!😃😃😃
That warehouse should have to make its own deliveries. I thought he was done when he got inside, but he still had more blind-siding to do.
Freightliners make backing a breeze, great job👍🏽
That was a hell of a good job!! Very impressed
mr. england.. great job. this just shows how nobody gives a crap for the truck driver, they just tell you here is the dock you figure it out.
Wow. That was impressive!! A real professional
I hate blindside backing. That was seriously impressive.
Wow 🤩 that was amazing 🤩
A piece of cake ! This is where the real fun is ! Moving reverse into tight spots is the ultimate challenge
Damn dude you make the song so difficult but pretty damn easy
Very nice job. Took it nice and easy. Very impressive.
You make CR England proud i hope i could back like that one
Amazing job I wouldn't have done it. Better call a yard dog to put it in that door
I would have slipped the yard dog some money to put it in the dock. I ain't got nothing to prove to nobody.
Boys and girls I need to tell y'all something. I quit driving these things after 41 years and most of my jobs were doing this kinda shit, but this ole boy did it better than I could've done. Do they have some sort of back up camera nowadays? I just hate to think he did all this just on the blind side, if so I want to buy him a beer.
No cameras. I only use the right power mirror, right convex and hood mirrors and also lean as far forward as necessary to maintain ability to see more than just the side of the trailer through the flat mirror. This particular tractor did have a right sleeper window that I could have also used, but have never done. Understanding angles, positions and how angles affect rotation rate help a lot
I went through CR England’s training program back in 1996 in Spartanburg SC. We spent more time backing than we did going forward. It was great training back then.
It would be great if trucking companies still put that kind of effort into developing their drivers' backing skills
Scott Zane all they want now is to get half trained drivers on the road in half the time and collect the tuition money
Mannnnn U did ur thing! I was nervous like I was backing lol. I drive a dry bulk tanker N I hate areas like this. I get it in.....after like 5 pull ups, lol, but good job. I'm definitely subscribing to ur channel.
Trucker Rob fuck it lol as long as you don’t hit anything you killed that backing Frfr
@@thegoat9237 thanks bro
Wow. You can blindside back. You're amazing.
That reminds of Backing into Oak Farms in SAN ANTONIO. THE MAN GOT SKILLS
he had camera man spotting him, prolly a dedicated route... So he was use to making this delivery. He drove up and backed in with no hesitation.
Correct on the cameraman spotting for me, but I was an OTR driver and this was the one and only time that I've ever been to this customer. My only real concerns throughout the backing were the yellow post on the side of the driveway, and forklift operators frequently driving across my path to the dock door.
You're probably the first commenter I've seen actually figure out that the cameraman was spotting for me.
Good job. Nice and calm, didn't get too excited.
Back in the 70s, we had to do all that without power steering. I never had a Freightliner with power steering.
That's a really nice setup he/she got there💝
Setup itself is the most important part of making even seemingly difficult backings be done with ease. I don't even think this setup was as good as I wanted it to be. Trailer tracked into the driveway later than I wanted it to, hence the reason I backed into the lot as slowly as I did.
Voici un très très bon chauffeur
Une manœuvre à contre main!!joli !!!!et chapeau au chauffeur !
👌🤌
Good job bro. I was bout to talk shit cause of the shitty company u work for. But hell u did your thang. All them long hood super truckers probably couldnt have done that that smooth
Scotty 2 Hotty lol Thanks! Not everybody has the same goals, needs and experiences though. I have my reasons for remaining with them, though their fixation on taking the manual mode out of all of our trucks might cause me to consider going elsewhere.
@@ScottZane no offense but it's weird that "you have your reasons" to stay at a company that underpays it's drivers. There are hundreds of companies that pay their company drivers what owner ops make at CREngland.
luke towner ironically, I'm no longer with CR England, though I did go to their Walmart Colton dedicated fleet for a while. Lots of opportunities to stop by my house both omw out and omw with most loads. I left for JCT in March. I like OTR life better, and definitely don't mind the more stress-free life of not being a trainer - though that, too, could be fun and rewarding. There really is no perfect world though. I'd rather focus more on the positives and less on the negatives, personally.
He missed the cars. Money down the fence line. Around the building. Beautiful!!
Good job here 👍! I've learn there really is no such thing as blind side backing. As you can see the set up is exactly the same for site side. Set eyes on target hole come in close snake out in alignment with the back corner of the trailer pointing to target spot seeing straight down your trailer. You should lose only a couple of sec not being able to see down trailer but your know you where already aligned b4 you started so when the tractor is finished with swing in those few sec you now can just about see down both sides to make easy adjustments your used to seeing🤠 oh yeah one more thing, if before you back after your set up you cant quite see down the trailer like you'd like, then adjust the passenger side power mirror✌
Exactly it! 90% of the "skill" in backings all lies with the setup itself. A great setup can make even a driver with mediocre backing skills look like a pro, while a bad setup will make even the most skilled backer look more like a rookie than like a pro. The setup correction process, when setups aren't good, is probably the best way to tell the difference between a skilled backer and a not skilled backer.
@@ScottZane Right on Scott!👍
Good job.you all should see what drivers down here in Jamaica have to go through sometimes. They say if you skilled enough to drive here you can go anywhere. Lol😊
Great job! Not doing nothing erratic. Staying calm. Cool heads prevail
It's an easy back tbh considering where I usually go. At Downtown, Toronto. With Double bunks. Still respect for the driver as Freightliner's side mirrors are small.
Making me miss the job. Great job driver!!
Good job driver doesn't matter the logo on the door just the driver inside
He cut that 45 perfect lined up on point
Didnt think england had a driver capable of that.
I was delivering at a whse and everyone had difficulty backing there. After a few tries I told them their yard dog needed to do it. They argued I persisted. I dropped the trailer and the yard dog couldn't do it, either. Next time I went there, a couple years later, they had redesigned the whole place.
I also hate when you get to a place thats tight and you know in your heart its dam near impossible and the staff tell you,,Oh others drivers do it all the time,I almost lose it and wait to tell them "WELL I'M NOT EVERY OTHER DRIVER MOTHERFUCKER"!!!!!
That was crazy to watch, great job
this is in SD CA . i deliver cheese to this same spot with a pup trailer and a lift gate. I have had to back in about 50 CREngland drivers trucks to this same location. 90% of CR driver are new . this is a great job and really fucking hard blindside. Also the cars are there all the time .
Yep! This is Seaport Meat Company in Spring Valley, which is indeed in the SD area
The guy with the camera was guarding the driver.
I have to laff.. some of these guys don't even know what blindsiding is. & yes , moving the power mirror helps a lot when doing this.. but I remember before we had P Ms on trucks..I remember no a/c or no heat. LOL OK showing my age now.
C.R. ENGLAND DRIVER????? I'm impressed
Buy that driver a beer!
You my friend are boss idk how long it would have taking me to do this or how many pull ups, definitely subscribing good job 👏🏻
Great job. Amazing help for many! Thanks
