    Hi Cam, when you are adding the oxide to weather the rock and add depth are you adding it dry or doing another thin wet coat with the oxide in it?

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  3 года назад +1

      I mix it with water to make it more runny so it’s more of a paint than hard coating

    Does the pointing also waterproof and seal the background/cage? I was thinking to use drylok for a few coast then add the pointing or would that just be a waste?
    Awesome job though man! Wonderful build. I’ve watched all your videos in the last few days lol

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  Год назад

      Yeah mate it’s waterproof enough that you don’t need to seal it. It will eventually absorb water when under water constantly. It’s only available in Australia also, we don’t have dryloc here but I have used waterproofing as first lets over the foam for constant water areas then coat with pointing.

    Did you use Dunlop slate grey tile pointing? My slate grey looks and feels gritty/also flakes after it dries, is that normal? This is my first time doing a background hence sorry for the silly question. Also would you seal the background eventually with pond sealer?

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  3 года назад

      Yeah mate in the first coat it was slate grey with water, second coat was also slate grey but I added some oxides to change the colour and third coat was half sand pointing and half slate grey to lighten the colour a bit more.
      Never heard or seen the pointing flaking off send me a message through my Facebook page and I can assist you more.

    Do you prefer a regular knife to a hot knife? If so, why?

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  3 года назад +2

      For cutting the expanding foam yes. I find it cuts quicker than the hot wire cutter. For the green insulation foam I use the hot wire because the knife tends to tear it’s way through leaving rough cuts

    Did I miss where you put the temp probe on the heat cord rock/shelf? Or haven't you got that hooked up to a thermostat?

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  2 года назад +1

      Nah mate you didn’t miss it I didn’t have a thermostat for it yet and she wasn’t going in there permanent for a bit after I finished the build so I wasn’t rushed to install one.
      I did have the heat running for a couple weeks without the thermostat and without her in there and it spiked on a warmer day and melted the underside of the rock. If you search my Facebook page you’ll see a post about it. I have since put a thermo underneath the rock in the grooves I have for airflow. Since added it I haven’t had and dramas with it. It’s set to keep the underside of the rock to 45 degrees which in turn has the surface about 25-30 degrees.

    Hi again Cam, is that 12mm form ply? Great video

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  10 месяцев назад

      No it’s 16mm mdf. But 16mm form ply will work better. I had all intentions of waterproofing the entire inside so I wasn’t concerned with which product I used and I had better buying power for mdf. If it wasn’t my own enclosure I’d use form or marine ply for sure.

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  3 года назад +1

      Yeah mate I made this one. It’s 16mm mdf and top and bottom facia panels are made from 30mm mdf that I debated the sliding track into. I sealed all internal joints with sikaflex and 5-6 coats of black pond sealer around the base and 3 coats on the walls.
      I wasn’t having a lot water in the enclosure but wanted it to be safe so I could make it semi bio active.

    • @Cambart1

      It was a 2m cord I’m pretty sure. Not sure on wattage though. Please be careful if you’re going to make a heat rock this way. Check my Facebook page for a couple issue I came across a few months after the build. Essentially ALWAYS use a thermostat in a correct manor.

I would have got a radiant heat panel but I think they or some pf the components are made in china because you just can't get them anymore from anywhere even overseas sites don't stock them......kinda sucks, So it's either a heat rock like yours or I could diy a heat panel...

    • @Cambart1
      @Cambart1  2 года назад +1

      Yeah mate I was after a heat panel also and couldn’t get them anywhere in aus and if I ordered one from the states it was ridiculously expensive.
      I have seen few videos of people making heat panels from heat cords etc but they didn’t look appealing and would rather see a cage and DHP globe.

      Yes same videos I checked out for DIY heat panels probably, I just don't know how much heat they'd throw off in a big enclosure though I need to make 3 enclosures, 2.4 x 1 x 1 m is the largest for my olive.
