    Daryl: "If you’re going to do a thing, you might as well do it right."
    Dale was too "soft". Shane was too "hard". Rick hasn't quite found the proper balance between the two extremes, for the sake of the group he needs to get there fast, and Daryl will make a much better second in command, maybe because he doesn't have the personal issues with Rick and Lori that Shane did.

      I think Daryl in the last couple of episodes, has had a major character shift. He's changed from being the constantly disgruntled loner, to incredibly insightful in his own way. You can just feel he's gonna be a great lieutenant if he lives long enough. He's a badass, deadly with a knife, deadly with a x-bow, ninja tracking skills and sharp as pin.
      I agree Lori has a lot to answer for. She jumped into the sack very quickly after she thought Rick was dead. She as good as suggested Rick should kill Shane and then drops this carrot in front of Shane. She has fuelled this conflict between Rick and Shane, probably unintentionally, but she should have thought it through better. I'm not liking Lori much at the moment.

      I'm glad you said that Shane thought Rick didn't have it in him he was completely wrong the problem with Shane is that Lori was constantly in his head if he could have got over that him and Rick would have been unstoppable. @@Ysmir. ///Daryl always was insightful...///
      Yeah, he was. But he was angry at his brother getting left behind and it was Rick who chained Merle to the roof. He's been conflicted up to this point and his actions have been a bit headstrong at times. He's also been carrying a lot of guilt over the death of Carol's girl and handled it badly, yelling at Carol in a quite cruel manner. The whole thing with collecting the ears was a bit weird too. It's about now he seems to have moved past almost all of that and settled into something way, way more stable, balanced and useful.

    • @Ysmir.
      @Ysmir. 2 года назад +7

      @@Martyntd5 the ear thing for me wasn't important seeing as he was half delirious and talking to Merle at the time. If I was to put meaning to it, I'd say it was probably him channeling his inner brute or wild side to survive. Him handling emotional situations bad is probably the effect of his upbringing and the fact that he is IMO somewhat emotionally stunted. But being insightful is something he always had in my opinion. He figured Shane and Otis out and that was beginning of season 2, if you've seen the cut scene from between season 1 and 2 - he figured that situation too despite Andrea mocking him. He is very smart and observant and that gives him insight, only now we see him sharing it more freely.
      But yeah, overall him getting over Merle situation and getting along better with Rick resulted in him being more useful for the group

    Glen Mazzara (the showrunner) responded about Shane becoming a walker in this episode much faster than Amy did, and not getting bit: *_"We worked hard to make sure that revelation landed. We knew what we were doing there. We knew it would land a punch. We've never had a main character become a zombie to this extent. Those [rapid flashes of zombie mayhem] represent the storm in Shane's brain to some extent … Amy was a weaker character. Shane is in a murderous rage … he's going to reanimate quicker. In the comics, Shane's death happens a lot sooner than it does in the show. In fact, it goes down almost right after Amy loses her life when the camp gets attacked. They kept Shane around in the show because Jon Bernthal was just so good in the role and his dynamic woth Andrew Lincoln's Rick Grimes was just too good to throw away so soon. He does have an affair with Lory like we see and does have a jealousy thing goijg on, but what distinguishes show and comic Shane is that unlike show, when Shane is about to murder Rick, Carl actually shoots Shane to protect his dad. Rick has nothing to do with Shane's death. More than that, Rick kinda starts getting an edge much sooner in the comic as he has to make a lot of tough choices to protect his people, and season 2 almost gives Shane some of Rick's darker qualities. Personally, I think this is one case in which the show does it better. It doesn't happen a lot, but this is definitely one of them.

      Shane came to the realization about how things had to be in this new world too soon unfortunately. Really wish he was alive longer as well.

    • @chrispalmer7893
      @chrispalmer7893 2 года назад +5

      I'm not sure Shane was right about the big things. He always talks about making the hard choices, but it seems to me he is consistently called for the easy, cowardly options. He had a much narrower objective than Rick - when he talked about "keeping us alive" the us was only ever him, Lori and Carl. Maybe sounds pragmatic and hard-headed, but it assumes that the wider group is a burden rather than a benefit and I think we've already seen enough to question that.

    • @adamparker3151
      @adamparker3151 2 года назад +2

      @@chrispalmer7893 I dont know about you, but to me opening the barn was very much needed and a hard choice to make. Rick chose the easy options. He decided to keep the kid who was clearly a threat, alive? What the hell? This is the Apocalypse, people dont care about other people (strangers) anymore. Besides, we all saw how his group was back at the Bar. They literally tried and wanted to kill Rick, Glenn and Hershel.
      Therefore, the kid deserved to be taken out. And that´s the hard choice, not the easy one.

    • @chrispalmer7893
      @chrispalmer7893 2 года назад +6

      @@adamparker3151 There was no great urgency to opening the barn; at most they just needed to keep an eye on it. Shane got incredibly lucky that Hershel was shocked to his senses, could have very easily gone another way. That's one of the key reasons why I think the group were incredibly lucky Shane didn't last any longer - his impulsiveness would have got everybody killed the moment they encountered some of the threats that are to come. It's not brutality that keeps the group alive across the seasons, it's knowing when brutality is the answer and when it is not. Shane was never close to having that level of wisdom.
      And as for Randall, of course killing him was the easy option. That's why almost no one spoke out against it. A brief moment of unpleasantness and then it's gone and the pressing reality of survival means you don't have to think about it anymore. Nothing could be simpler. That's the real threat Shane posed - intant and complete certainty, comforted by the fiction that there is no other option. It'll get you a long way. Until suddenly it doesn't.
      Plus, of course, there is the underlying hypocrisy of it all. If Carl had been lost in those woods Shane would never have advocated calling off the search. He wouldn't let them go looking for Andrea, or Carol, or Hershel, but he'd tear everything apart looking for Lori. Nothing to do with the "right" or "safest" choices, just that he only cared about the three of them. Maybe that gets you survival in the short term, but long term survival needs community. He was a liability the group is far better off without.
      Great character and fun to watch, but a liability all the same.

    and someone has probably said that already but they discussed a different situation for the Rick and Shane scene at first.
    Originally they had the idea that after Rick killed Shane Rick would pick up Shane‘s gun to shoot walker Shane but not being able to only hearing clicking noises, revealing that Shane‘s gun wasn’t even loaded and that Shane purposely pushed Rick to the edge and wanted him to kill him because Shane knew he’d never get Lori and he needed Rick to do that in order to be strong for Lori and Carl.

      My theory is that Shane not really intended to kill Rick, otherwise he would have done it. At the same time, he thought Rick was too weak and he loves Lorie. I think he realized the futility of his love and I think he provoked Rick to do exactly what he did.
      If you can kill your best friend, you can also protect Shane's girlfriend and Carl. And don't forget Rick has crossed the next line. Shane already had the gun downstairs and was no longer a threat at the time. So Rick became a murderer, because the self-defense situation was already over.
      What Rick was doing was deliberately with the intention of killing Shane, sneaking into his mind. And when it was done, he pushed the responsibility for it away from himself. He wouldn't be the one who did it, Shane got him to do it. Denial. Justification for the murder. Exactly the behavior that Shane showed all the time.
      Apart from that, this was foreseeable and absolutely not out of character. Lorie has planted this seed a few episodes before. So no, that was in him and he let that out now after Shane crossed the last line. It may have seemed a bit out of character because you literally have to become another person to kill your best friend. This is absolutely credible behaviour.
      The whole season has been working towards Shane's death by Rick. So I don't know what you want to have seen that you think it's odd. That was obvious and therefore absolutely understandable.

      I don’t think Shane was obsessed with her as such, I think he always looked at Lori and Ricks relationship as something he wanted in life. Rick “dying” ultimately gave him that option to have a relationship like that + the fact he most likely trauma bonded to her due to the situation and environment.

    Shane & Rick have HISTORY & he is not only like a brother to him but basically an Uncle/God Father to Carl & all the tender scenes with him throughout this season so far such as right after Carl was shot and he was being so empathetic and thoughtful with Rick about the whole situation and then later comforting and cleaning Carol I truly believe that if Rick had not gone in the coma and had been alive throughout the start of this apocalypse he would not be too far off from where Shane is right now.
    I think Shane just adapted faster than everyone else and lost his mind a bit when Lori petted him and Rick against each other :(. I definitely agree that he and Rick together would’ve been a truly formidable force long-term if Lori did not get between them.

Not because of talking over it or anything but because the volume of it appears to be much lower than your own. So while I have seen the show before its hard to piece together exact lines sometimes because they are so low. I know copyright issues and whatnot but I'd imagine that's why you black it out every few seconds, and being edited you don't even have the full episode being reacted to. So if possible, can we get a slight increase in volume of the episodes themselves?

    I'm a lover of Rick, my answer to your question is my Officer Friendly! *.* And I'm on season finale 11 :D
    Shane keeps losing his: shit" and had to be put down like a rabid dog. I was very sad, but I felt a LOT of relief and the damn soap opera drama gone-again I'm not a fan of human drama-this show is an exception but in first watching, it this guy and I agree that we were not fans of the drama >< I love animal drama over human drama. Too much.
    Rick is the MAN and Carl is...trying to be a man lol. But certainly, Shane was the loose cannon and Lori has bad timing, well to me she should have let well enough alone, but I get it as for me being female and as an individual, I linger on anything that bothers me and love to have closure. I can care too much and be gullible and sorta of forget how dangerous people can be and precarious a situation can be, trying to hope you tread softly or just go in cracking some eggs, lol.
    But I can tell Lori has been wanting to get that off her chest, this triangle, this constant blame and badgering of Shane.
    She should have did it a while back and by far she's finally, eating that humble pie far too late-I realize that she full of too much pride and is unyielding to her own faults-a bit of a narcissist -which I couldn't stand about her-she reminds me of my lovely mom ^.^ "Love you mom!!"
    Rick's loving memories of his childhood friend and co-pilot officer "not so friendly" is gone by his own hands. He too was hanging on his relationship with Shane, thinking he can carry not only the burden as a leader but revive his friendship and faults of Shane. (Rick knew that Shane killed otis. If Were him I'd be self-medicating honestly. Thats just crazy. Shane is still a murder even more now.)

    Little Comic Comparison here Carl shooting Shane zombified was a similarity to the comic because in the comics Shane was already dead by this point in the comics Shane is killed pretty quickly just before they left the Atlanta camp Shane tries to kill Rick but then Carl shoots Shane dead alive saving Rick it’s great that TV Shane outlived his comic counterpart but it’s sad that we lost a great character I thought Jon Bernthal did a great job playing the role as Shane the actor went on to do different things I followed the actor after he was killed off here he went on to be in great movies and I loved him as Frank Castle/The Punisher in Marvel’s Netflix shows Daredevil Season 2 and The Punisher He mighta been an asshole at the end but deep down he’s still a human being that cared about Rick and the group i still miss Shane.

  • @Kaptain_Scout

    John Bernthal (Shane's actor) said he wanted something else to happen with the fight with Rick. Shane wanted to originally lead Rick away so that he would kill Shane. Shane wanted Rick to kill him so that he would become the man who is strong enough to survive in this world and protect his family. And how we would know this was, Rick would've picked up Shane's gun and go to fire the gun to kill Walker Shane and it would go click click*. The scene still can play like this if you watch it again with the idea of Shane wanting to die. The reason Shane wants to die is because he knows he is too far gone and the talk with Lori kinda sold that to Shane. Andrew Lincoln(Rick's actor) and John talked about this idea and they both loved it but the show runners decided to not include Rick picking up Shane's empty gun. John Bernthal said if you watch with that context it makes more sense anyways. You also see Shane taunting Rick saying he isn't man enough and I'm a better father.
    Here's John Bernthal explaining it

  • @DrewDragoon
    @DrewDragoon 2 года назад +2

    This will be a long comment because the scene between Rick and Shane is one of my favorite in television history and I have some things to share about it that I think is interesting. First of all the actor who plays Shane, Jon Bernthal, originally wanted it to be a case where Shane forced Rick to kill him and his gun was empty the whole time. He wanted the scene to play out similarly but after Shane is killed Rick tries to use Shane's gun on zombie Shane and realizes it's empty. Shane wanted Rick to become the man he thought he should be to protect Lori and Carl.
    Another interesting detail in this scene is when Shane looks down at the knife and quickly looks at Rick and then back at the knife. Most people myself included took this to mean he was surprised that Rick actually stabbed him but that's not the case at all. What that look really meant is he was surprised Rick pulled the knife out of him because that essentially signed his death warrant. Although unlikely Shane could have possibly survived if Rick didn't pull the knife out so that's what that surprised look was.
    Another interesting detail is if you watch the scene very carefully with the audio really high, you can make out some words that Shane says to Rick under his breath as he's gurgling on the ground he says very clearly "keep at it". If you don't believe me go watch the scene by itself on RUclips and listen very closely after Rick stabs him. I think this is just a small Easter egg that Shane's actor added into it and you're not actually meant to hear it.
    In the end I agreed with Shane on most things. Randall should have been killed, the search for Sophia should have ended after a couple of days or a week at most, the barn Walkers needed to be killed, killing Otis saved Shane and Carl's life whereas not killing him they all three would have died. The one thing I could never agree with though is trying to kill your best friend and unfortunately that's what ended up getting him killed. I always wonder what would have happened if Shane had went with Rick to retrieve Herschel and had seen Rick put down those two guys. What would have happened if Lori hadn't played mind games and manipulated his emotions. Rick gave him every chance and then some to turn back and he just couldn't get over Lori and Carl. Also it's worth noting that Shane could have killed Rick at any time during that encounter but his love for Rick gave him the opportunity he needed. One last thing to note is that you can see Rick's subtle shift in his facial expressions after Shane says "You've got a broken woman. You've got a weak boy." I believe that was the moment he decided to kill Shane. That's also the moment where he stops talking to him as a friend and he begins talking to him like a police officer would with a criminal trying to talk him down as he brings up going back to Lori and Carl to get his gun away.
    A very tragic situation and a very well-written character. Shane reaching for his friends face for comfort as he's dying and Rick grabbing his hand was very touching. Despite how they ended up they still cared for each other deeply. Rest in peace Shane Walsh

    They shot a version of the final scene in which it turned out Shane's gun wasn't loaded - the idea being that he was goading Rick into killing him with the intention of turning Rick into who Shane thought he needed to be. I don't think that fully worked with what else we saw, so I can see why they dropped it, but it was an interesting idea. Heart-warming aside Jeffrey De Munn, who played Dale and was no longer in Georgia when this episode was shot, flew down specially just to be on set for Jon Bernthal's final day. And no doubt to go out for the meal that had already become a tradition when someone is killed off...
    Also worth noting that AMC's marketing department notoriously spoiled this episode by running ads about "Shane's last episode of the Walking Dead" before it aired. And, as it the way with such things, a huge number of people who were pissed off about that ending up spoiling it for other people by complaining and drawing attention to it...
