    Andrea: "Those were all the right calls. It's your presentation that leaves something to be desired."
    Very tense episode.
    Shane is right much of the time but he is right in a way that turns people away from him. And he still thinks that he is the only protector of the group.
    Rick is intelligent and mature enough to understand that violence and impulsive decision making isn't always the right choice/
    We are betting that the clash between Shane and Rick can't be too far off. Especially after that chilling description of Shane at the end. Whispered into Ricks ear.

      Rick was Shanes boss in the Sheriffs dept. He never stopped being in charge. He is the 'authority' and regards the rest of the group as civilians.
      When this show first aired, the zombie genre was regarded as a bit of a joke. This show took it seriously and made it top drawer. Dump Lost (it's just confusing, silly nonsense) and do 3xTWD/week.

    I think when Rick reunited with his family, him and Shane acted as the two main leaders of the group. Their opposing views (like going to the CDC vs. going to Ford Benning) and the love triangle caused a lot of tension, eventually resulting in the barn scene. Rick going along with Hershel's wishes, despite them all knowing how dangerous walkers are, made him look weak. This is the moment where Shane momentarily stands up as the leader of the group by opening the barn and killing the walkers inside. You can even see it in Rick's face as he just watches and can't do anything to stop Shane. This all changes, however, when Sophia steps out of the barn. Even Shane is hesitant to act. I believe it's at this exact moment that Rick retakes and cements his position as the sole leader of the group by stepping forward and putting down Sophia

    • @marthapackard8649
      @marthapackard8649 2 года назад +7

      Interesting. Shane's act of opening the barn always felt like a temper tantrum to me. I felt it endangered everyone. Both Carol and Beth nearly got bitten. To me that wouldn't seem like good leadership to others. I also feel like a number of the group had already backed Rick. Daryl definitely way back in the Vatos episode. Glenn also, I think, and those two are probably the next two important people for the survival of the group. Andrea backs Shane but frankly she shot Daryl even though everyone was basically yelling for her NOT to shoot. Yeesh.

    In a technical sense I think the leadership thing happened when they were kids, Rick has the type of personality of someone who led. I think that he had a boisterous friend in Shane who was always talking and being cocky but more or less was loyal to Rick throughout their whole lives. It’s purely speculation as, as far as I know, we really don’t get much backstory about the two of them, but I feel like Shane has always been the number two, the muscle to ricks brain. I think the second he showed up again Shane knew Rick was going to lead again because Shane knows rick can. In fact I’d venture to guess that a part of Shane was relieved when rick showed up so he didn’t have to lead, at least until Shane began to doubt the way rick led given the current circumstances.

    • @Blasto2x
      @Blasto2x 2 года назад +6

      The difference in their personalities was given during their talk in the woods a few eps back. Shane was a player-literally and figuratively-the popular football playing jock who had the ladies lined up for a turn. Rick however was high school sweethearts with Lori and they married young.

    • @marthapackard8649
      @marthapackard8649 2 года назад +4

      Agreed about their personalities but not so sure Shane was relieved. Possibly because of the relationship he started with Lori and Carl I think he was more likely resentful. Although I do think he was glad that Rick was alive.

    Ricks transfer to leadership kinda happened throughout season 1. Taking initiative to go after Merle when Shane didn't want to, convincing Jenner to open the doors when Shane would have just killed him, getting Glenn back without backlash, etc. Just a collective of things that Shane didn't really step up to do. Shane was great for immediate safety but he's impulsive. Where as Rick leads with compassion and naturally people gravitate towards that

    As far as the leadership change goes, I think it happened within the first smaller group as they escaped Atlanta. Once they got to the larger Group, which included Shane, it seemed like Rick was the one controlling the guy who kept having the death dreams, meanwhile Shane was dealing with Carol's husband, perhaps rightly but certainly overly aggressively.
    So for the big group I believe it was that two day period where Rick stepped up and Shane kind of lost control of himself (and also the group).
    This combined with Rick's wife immediately switching over her belief/faith from Shane to Rick also meant something to the group.

      Good point. Plus, I forgot he bonded with Daryl, Glenn, and TDog a little on their Atlanta trip to try and save Merle. A leader needs allies to respect him and I think he gained Daryl's trust and respect on that trip in particular. I think he started becoming leader after they got back after that first walker attack and helping the dream guy while he was dyeing.

    I had the same thought too… When did the transition of leadership take place. I don’t think there was any one moment. I think it happened gradually from when Rick first joined the group. Everyone in the group could see that Rick was a natural leader, always putting himself forward making most of the decisions and so everyone else just slowly started to follow. I think when Rick and Shane were cops, Rick was mainly in charge but they both saw each other as equals but Shane just let rick take charge again in the new world and Shane playing his role as partner and support just like when they were cops. That’s how I understand it anyway!

    The end convo with Lori INFURIATES me to this day…I genuinely believe Shane is a valuable asset if he can come to terms with Rick & Lori being together & not holding it against him.

    Leadership, Shane vs Rick. IMO, the group just naturally gravitated towards Rick after he first got to the camp. Rick never forced his leadership on the group, he was himself & ppl just organically took to him. Also, I don’t think the group has forgotten about what Shane has done for them, but unfortunately, his recent actions & approach are overshadowing that; Andrea spells it out right to his face. I also disagree with Andrea on Shane doing MORE than Rick to save the group, I think they’ve both done their fair share. And once again, andrea just doesn’t grasp how disposable they are to Shane when it comes to Lori & Carl.
    I’m also under the impression that Shane didn’t care if Rick and Hershel made it back. Why would he? In his mind, that would remove the barrier to Lori & Carl being “his” and the farm being his.
    Carol not backing down from Daryl shows just how much stronger she’s already become AND also sticking it out bc she knew that Daryl needed to get that off his chest.
    Great reaction!

      Also, I think Glenn is struggling bc that “selfish” instinct is new to him and he needs time to process that.

      I agree. If I were in the group and were ever lost or in trouble I would certainly want to be with Lori or Carl. In fact, if Shane was in charge, I would never leave the group unless one of them were with me!

    IDK if there was a definitive moment of transition, but it was definitely between him deciding to go after Merle to the debate over the CDC and the military base. And then that was it, Rick was leader. I think the Shane we didn't see was calm and a good leader. It was only moments of Carol's husband being a dk that we see him being aggressive and I don't think he is wrong. I think, though he did fine on his own he needs Rick to reel him in... Too bad he is falling off the deep end. I like Shane's character.

    Glen realizing that he has something to live for in Maggie makes my heart hurt for him. As much as it is frustrating to see him pull away from her in this episode because of his fear of being compromised by his new sense of vulnerability it is awesome to see him grow a bit.
    I both hate and love Lori for what she tells Rick at the end. It is bible-truth and he needed to hear it but that determined, dead-eyed, stare on Rick's face makes me sad because you know it is a thread of the goodness that seems to be be default state being stretched to the limit and I don't want to see it snap. I don't want to see the person he becomes when that happens (but also I do, because he is glorious when filled with purpose).
    Great fucking show, I love watching it with you guys. Stoked we get 2 eps a week now.

    Shane losing his position happened slowly, imo, the group turned to Rick one-by-one. The first ones were Daryl, Glenn and D-dog when Rick took them to get Merle. Then Dale, because Shane pointed the gun at Rick, and he felt that Shane was too dangerous to follow. Carol after Lori's speech in the forest to the others defending Rick, and Rick not giving up on trying to find Sofia. (I didn't add Carl or Lori to this list because they were Rick's family, but If I had to add them I'd say Carl was on the Rick train from the moment he knew he was alive, and Lori... I think she backed Rick up from the start, but wasn't 100% sure of him as the leader until later) Oh, and Andrea still hasn't caught on that Rick is the leader now~~

    The tilting point in leadership was pretty much right after Rick got to the group. He and Shane led together somewhat, but Rick pretty much took over the moment he decided to go back for Merle. And no, the people weren't a huge fan of him calling on all the walkers in the city, but they also praised him very much for being the one to get them out of that situation as well. I think that, right off the bat, people took more of a liking to Rick than they did to Shane, because Rick is more level-headed and looking towards the future more than Shane. And people need something and someone to believe in, Rick embodies that. Shane embodies being stagnant, surviving today, but not thinking of a tomorrow. There was not clear 'takeover' in leadership, so to speak, it was just more about the group having more faith in Rick and respecting him more than they ever did with/for Shane.

    This really starts to build up a lot of tension. I used to be annoyed with Laurie over driving off but now I think she was thinking emotionally, that Rick was her ultimate choice not Shane, and that maybe she was still a bit afraid of Shane and what he might do to Rick since he pushed himself on her way back in the CDC. She has doubts because of Otis.

    Glad to see you`re doing 2 episodes a week. You`ll need to. There`s so much material & the show is so addictive. As much as you like it now, you`ll learn to love it later. Believe or not, you haven't reached the really exciting parts yet. You may have to go up to 3 times a week. One of the best shows of the 21st century & you have the luxury of not having to wait weeks or months like we O.G. fans did.

    I love how the show does Rick becoming leader because its like it would be, its organic.
    Rick just starts making decisions and people either agreed with them or followed them. Often he would do stuff and others would help. His demeanor and the fact he was a cop lent creadence to it.
    Finally his freindship with Shane allowed the current leader at that time to respond better to him as well.
    Rick just keeps doing the shit. Handcuffing Merl, putting gore on them, inadvertently finding the farm refuge, when he took out Sofia walker and the two guys at the bar as well.
    Rick personifies it through the show consistently with continual acts of badassery.
    Enjoy your reactions guys.

    I think the transition happened becuz Rick came up with the plan to camouflage themselves as zombie to get out of the first predicament- then his willingness to save others without hesitation or atleast try to. Sometimes we just gravitate to natural leaders- especially if they seem to weigh out options or are seen to do things as a benefit for the group, plus originally he is more level headed. Plus he wore a sherif
    badge and shane was just a partner. :)

    Lori pissed me off with this. She's like a snake whispering in Rick's ear. As if she wants Rick to kill Shane... We shall see the outcome of her actions. I agree Rick and Shane need to talk. Good thing Rick is civilized and not a hothead that would go off guns blazing at Shane. Vice versa... It would be bad. Anyway, so happy to see you guys more often with TWD

      @@zammmerjammer She should warn her husband and he is a threat. My opinion was speaking more on how she said it. She said,"You would kill to protect what's yours?" So she is implanting the idea of KILLING Shane to protect HIS family. Let's say she was truly in fear of Shane and outright asked Rick to kill him in order to keep all of them safe.. that comes with consequences. Keep in mind my opinion is hindsight I've seen the consequences

    In my opinion, Rick didn’t officially become the leader until they reached the CDC. Before they went to the CDC, Rick had to get Shane’s blessing before doing anything major, like going back for Merle, going to the CDC, etc. He went over each of those decisions with Shane first

    It happened as soon as he walked up to the group and seen his family in season one. Go to that scene and it cuts to Shane. You can see his facial expression and eyes lowering to the ground. That’s a sign of submission even if we don’t realize it.

    thinking about the power dynamic from season 1, I feel as though Shane was leading the group even after Rick showed up. During the campfire, Shane is the one to tell Ed the fire is too high. Once Daryl comes back and talks about looking for his brother in the city, Rick tells him he won't go alone. Shane still sees himself as the leader but that isn't the case anymore because when telling Rick going is too dangerous he gets backlash and Rick completely ignores him, with two others (Tdog and Glenn) following behind. When Rick comes back to the destroyed group to save them from the walkers, the two almost work together as co-leaders before noticing Jim has a bite later that morning. After about 3-4 days since Rick arrived, the first main power struggle happens when Rick mentions the CDC may be a smart destination to go to as they were working on a cure and is only a day or two away from the unsafe campsite. Shane brings up a valid argument that since the city was overrun the CDC probably was as well so they should try Fort Bening since they don't fully know if the military got overrun. I personally think that since the CDC was closer than the 100-mile road trip and gave hope for Jim to survive, the group just chose Rick's plan and began giving him the final say. Shane has yet to fully give up his role as leader and is fighting Rick on his decisions as a way to prove he's better. All that to say, Rick TRUELY becomes the leader at the end of season 2 when he and Shane finally reach a conclusion on their power struggle, but the group accepts him as leader after Amy and Jim's death.
