      Marisa Donnelly - 👸🏼 After slurping her beverage out of a coffee mug? I think not! Her butler should have served her beverage in a tea cup at the least. He should be giving daily instruction regarding her table manners. Especially, as it seems, that she was quite allowed to run amok whilst she should have beed learning etiquette from nanny and eventually, her governess! 👸🏼

    I think when thinking about the Queen’s speech it’s also pertinent to remember that
    1. Her father had hearing problems; a lot of her slow and “proper” speech comes from that
    and
    2. Her mother is Scottish; some of her pronunciations (mainly vowels) are also thanks to that.

    • @karenschafer2827
      @karenschafer2827 5 лет назад +45

      And, her grands and great grands were German speakers so the vowels are more back in the throat.

    • @BattyButtercup
      @BattyButtercup 5 лет назад +45

      furthermore, her father was not expected to take the throne & thus she and her sister were abruptly put higher in succession mid-childhood.
      while she would have already been learning etiquette, etc, the nature of the enormous burden suddenly placed upon her father (especially going into wartime) influenced her greatly, as would his (very private at the time) speech therapy.
      german accents, speech impediment, hearing impairment, those genes all the european families share (e.g. one for haemophilia) likely making her jaw/tongue placement rest in a distinctive manner... all these factors would have affected her manner of speech by default.
      speaking of speech therapy & etiquette/elocution instruction, Her Majesty was also of the era wherein the "transatlantic" accent was created. the dialect was taught as the "most correct" manner to speak english & was taught to be used for public speaking. this artificial dialect was thus adopted by actors, radio broadcasters, teachers... it is likely that her elocution lessons were based on the dialect.

But now I do understand that when I think about it, I do speak the way she would!! Lately I've been reading Winnie the Pooh and House at Pooh Corner to my little. I work my own play into the reading of it by practicing different accents for the various characters (I'm American but once upon a time used to teach accents to actors). I do the narrator, Kanga, and Roo in RP (think BBC, with different tones and pacing for each character), Pooh has a gravelly contemporary RP accent, Piglet is Cockney (with a very high squeaky voice), Tigger is from Somerset (because you gotta be able to say "Tiggerrrr"), Owl is Scottish (basically posh Edinburgh), Rabbit has an Estuary accent. I've been struggling with Christopher Robin because he has a much more posh RP closer to the queen, which is one I'm not very good at, so this was actually pretty useful!

    That was so amazingly clear. I feel like I can actually sound like the queen. And you sound so much like her it’s uncanny. Like you said because you have to approach speech in such a scientific, systematic way, you can explain it so much better than someone who just “gets it”.

    This is definitely one of my top 5 favourite videos of yours! Can't wait for more content about the UK and especially about the English language. 💚
    I also have a request - could you or your lovely wife please give me tips on learning sign language? I started it this year in college, not English sign language but Polish since it's where I live, and I know they are all different but I need any advice I can get on best ways to practice, remember, not get confused, and honestly simply on how to study a sign language. I had a flare up of my chronic illness and could not attend classes at the beginning of the semester and now I have quite a lot of material to catch up on and I am not dealing well with this (welcome anxiety, panic and doubt, thank you so much for attending...).

    While it might be irritating for you as a Deaf person to be always practicing, I really enjoy your recent videos about accents! Could you maybe do one about different accents throughout the UK and specifically England? Another good video might be how wildly different the different sign languages are, and how even those have regional dialects and “accents”! My professor told me that even ASL can be drastically different from DC to a place like Philadelphia which has a rich, long-standing Deaf community. Love your content, looking forward to another video, whatever it may be!

    Thank you Jessica! ❤️❤️ You saved my day! ❤️ I've had some bad days now, because my best friend just started hanging out with our other class mates and now she talks to me like I'm just someone from our class... I've cried today five times... And I now have just one friend at school, but she's going to Florida for TWO WEEKS... But now, I can take my thoughts away from it and focus to this amazing video! ❤️❤️💕💕❤️❤️

      jenna Hang in there, Jenna. Just remember, school is a very artificial environment. You’re thrown in with people you like, nice(ish) people but not those you’d socialise with, as well as people who are less than ideal companions. At the same time everyone is at the socially most inept and full of angst, hormones and self doubt. Don’t be fooled by their exterior, no one else is as confident as they seem.
      Two pieces of advice, try to find an ‘outside school’ group (hobby, dance class, extended family, drama group, volunteer...). This was my life saver. And keep remembering life is in flux at your age, even if it feels like forever, it won’t be really be long before you find your people. Just keep being your lovely self

      @@jandobson2768 thank you for advice! ❤️ But it makes it harder that she's my cousin so we've been together all our live. And I have to still see her in our relativa celebrations and everything... But I'm going to new school next year and maybe start a New hobby so I hope I can get new friends from there.

    • @jandobson2768

      jenna Smart thinking. It’s no excuse, but I’m sure you know your cousin’s behaviour is about her own growing up issues, not you. Don’t be surprised if she acts differently away from school and school friends. And keep in mind, when she grows up a bit (and she will although it might take a while) she’ll be very ashamed of herself and you’ll be able to razz her about “when you got all up yourself” 😀
      PS Hope that expression means the same in your country as it does in Australia

    You are amazing! Thanks for tips on adding another accent to my repertoire! I rely on hearing and watching mouths to understand and mimic accents. I'm finding that when watching muted videos with subtitles I can "see" a person's accent. It was surprising to learn I could tell the accent a person had just by watching their mouths!

      Southern who? Like which country southern? If you mean English Southern It is because London is in the south of England and so it was most affected by the RP accent. If you mean U.S. Southern it’s because American southern has a slower speech patterns (some attribute that to the heat others to the mainly British familial colonization) and longer emphasis on the vowels. Etc. etc.
      Your comment was very vague...

      @@Imtellingyourdad I was thinking the same thing. I live in Kentucky, so we're a bit more Appalachian influenced, but it definitely sounded like old Southern Belle. Especially at the end when she talked about the intonation and flow. It was a remarkable resemblance.
