    Adele writes about her break ups and no one ever criticized her because TS doesn’t write as a victim and holds players accountable and that is something men don’t like. She also has written about times she treated her man wrong but that is never talked about because the hate must go on.

      Taylor Swift doesn't write as a victim? Her entire public and artistic construction has revolved around her victimization, victim of the bad boys she chose, victim of the leonine contracts she signed,
      If Taylor has played a role it is that of the victim

      Oh right, it is not about the ‚who the song is about’ game that she started with her fans. And not about the fact that she herself said many times that she does write about them. And not about the fact that she uses descriptions that make it possible to recognise who she writes about. It is not just some ‚you’ or ‚him’.

    Don't feel bad about your previous opinion, it was widely held by the media and general population for many years! 💘
    One note I'd love to add is just that even if music is specifically made for "teenage girls", that shouldn't have a negative connotation. Teenage girls are incredibly intelligent, emotionally aware, and at the helm of pop culture. People looked down on The Beatles for their teenage girl fanbase, yet we know how their body of work is appreciated now. Teenage girls have great taste!

      Yes exactly!! I don’t understand why people think an artist/band having a fan base pertaining of teenage girls or just teenage AFABS in general as ‘bad music’. Some of them are bound to be misses, but that doesn’t mean they’re all bad. It’s probably the (possibly internalised or not) misogyny, that the views of women, and younger women in particular are ‘less worthy’ and therefore terrible. I mean, name one thing a teenage girl can be into without getting made fun of for it. :/ My dad is the rock & hiphop style of music listener, and after watching the eras tour movie with me & my mother he said that he actually thinks Taylor is really good and that he’s a ‘swiftie’, lol! I do wonder if these people put their prejudices aside & actually listened to a Taylor album, keeping the lyrics in mind, if they’d actually be more into her? Anyways, sorry for the rant. Amazing comment. 😅😊🫶

    I also misjudged her. I thought she was another manufactured product but I've come to realize she's incredibly smart and bold. Politically, financially. socially... and yes, creatively... she has an awareness and maturity that eludes most people throughout their lives. She's "clean" as a role model, she works hard and so... I can respect that. She deserves all her success.

    • @isabelguzmanmiranda5025
      @isabelguzmanmiranda5025 5 месяцев назад +7

      I am to blame for that, too. When I saw her in the video of Love Story I thought she was absolutely gorgeous, so I thought "There's no way this Victoria's Secret model with the perfect face writes her own songs". I guess it was "Fallacy of the Just world", it was hard to believe that someone THAT pretty could also be that talented and that young. Also, her songs were innocent, with an idealized view of love...
      Then she came out with Back to December admitting she had screwed up and I thought "Oh, maybe she writes the lyrics".
      And then she came out with "I knew you were trouble" and dared write "shame on me now" and "A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be" and I thought: "There's no way a group of men are writing this. Companies milk successful bands for what they are as they are, they don't try to reinvent the lyrics or the sound... There's no way a committe of producers chose this blond-blue-eyed 50s picture perfect spitting image of innocence and wrote "A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be" for her to sing. She is the real deal".
      Then Lorde mentioned she was uncomfortable with someone she admires so much as Swift being so beautiful and many idiots saw it as an attack on Swift. I understand Lorde there. It took me a few records to believe Swift was writing her own songs, because she looks SO good. I mean, there have been pretty songwriters (Dolly Parton comes to mind), but Swift is stunningly beautiful, she has an incredibly lovely face with a body that can share the catwalk with Victoria's Secret models in equal terms. And talent, and a supportive family (with a father that knows business and a mother who knows marketing, so a supportive family that had the exact skills that would help her). It's hard to be reminded of how unfair life is, but Swift deserves all the accolades on her poetry and music. And I deserved my lesson and must learn to remember that sometimes people are lucky and have beauty, talent and a supportive family.

    I would readily admit that when I was in my teens, early 20's, she is exactly the kind of artist I would have dismissed as a vapid, barely talented bubble gum pop singer ... and I would have been wrong. I am now the "girldad" of a 19 and 22 year old, my youngest being a huge Swifty. I started diving into her work primarily to share with my daughter. My oldest daughter's tastes in music are similar to my own, and we've had the shared experience of going to a variety of concerts ... I wanted to mirror that experience with my youngest, something to bond over. I am glad I did, and I'll tell you, I am completely impressed with Taylor Swift ... for a variety of reasons, including her music, and especially her storytelling. I get why she has such a loyal fan base.

    this is very cool. the media has done a pretty good job of making her seem a certain way, and it's not surprising your image of her wasn't in line with the reality of her. one of the coolest things that's happened this year has been her massive popularity compelling people to give her a chance, when they thought they never would. it's true that the truth always comes to the surface. i haven't seen a single person whose truly given her a chance have a negative to say about her as an artist. it's been really great to watch. she deserves everything she has.

      I'm sorry, but the most important thing that happened to her this year is the death of a fan at a concert in Brazil. Not letting the public enter with their own water in the middle of a heat wave, to be able to sell them their very expensive water inside the stadium, is something that will accompany her forever, especially since she is the celebrity who did the most for global warming. Do you know any other artist who represents the voracity of capitalism like her?

    • @edadragneel1569
      @edadragneel1569 5 месяцев назад

      @@gerardovazquez6441 she handed out free water because THE STADIUM and the company that owns it wouldn’t let people have water. There are videos of her and her team trying to get water to these people after finding out that they were denied any refreshments. It isn’t the artist or their team that controls the prices of refreshments like food and water, and it isn’t them who determines the rules like what can be allowed in and out. It’s the stadium and the stadium’s parent company. The only thing Taylor and her team might (and that’s a hard MIGHT when it comes to some places) be able to control is merch sales.
      Also, in terms of the private jet controversy, those Jets are typically rented by the celebrity and Taylor lends it out to her friends if needed. She also invests in “carbon credits” where more trees are planted depending on how much carbon is emitted. She travels a lot internationally, and even within the nation to the point where she does need to fly, but she can’t use regular commercial airlines because that could potentially put herself and others in danger. So, while she may not be able to erase the carbon she’s used, she can try to mitigate it, which she does.

    Taylor writes about emotions, in all aspects and moments of life. And she puts those moments of different emotions into words for us to connect with and relate to. Her music is like therapy, regardless if it´s joyful or sad. Like she says herself in mirrorball "Because I´m a mirrorball, I´ll show you every version of yourself tonight".
    Yeah, the false perception of Taylor aka the media brainwash since 2013, still runs deep today with those who fell for it. Especially those who haven´t heard her music or those who never really listened to her words or don´t comprehend lyrics beyond the surface level. But as soon as a person actually dives into her universe of poetry, emotions, amazing melodies and actually sees her genius as a songwriter, director, writer, producer etc etc..They become a fan. Every. Single. Time. And then they also realize that she is an amazing, kind, empathic, funny and beautiful human being too.

    But I've recently seen a more interesting class being offered about Taylor Swift at a law school - focusing on how she's changed the music industry for artists' rights, artistic licensing, musical contracts, and more. Like you. Jim, I under estimated Swift's work. I did not hate her. I just never really paid attention to her thinking she was Pop.
    I am older and come from a time when pop was disliked in general. I am a rock, new wave and blues fan. However, I do listen to new music and try to find good artists. What drives me crazy is auto.tune. it feels like it hides bad artist's lack of real talent. Ripping off listeners.
    Anyway, around Supe Bowl time (not a fan of Football but, I grew up in Kansas City and my family moved when I was in high school.). I still feel proud when the Chiefs or Royals win playoffs or the big one. I am a fan of Baseball.
    So I heard about the dating by one of the players and Swift. It got me to wondering why so many people dislike her. It's one thing to not pay attention to or not care for an artist's songs and another to be personally hateful.
    So I checked into it and ended up watching a couple videos. I did read about the whole Kanye and Swift phone call thing and thought it was cruel and awful of someone trying to destroy someone's career and lively hood. And reputation with the public undeservingly. I was very impressed with the Look What You Made Me Do video. It was brilliant.
    I now have a healthy respect for Taylor Swift's work.

    I think a lot of us were wrong about Taylor. I an a causal listener and then when she made the jump to pop i made the worst assumptions that she was going to be this Miley Cyrus 0.2 twerking everywhere and i basically dis all her songs there i saw how catchy they were but i became a fan during covid when she came out with her 3 albums in one year and how she outsmart the industry. But became a full swiftie after watching the era's tour.

    Taylor’s love songs don’t portray my life at all. I have never lived through heartbreak or loss (thankfully). I am a 23yo male swiftie nonetheless. Her songwriting is just so enticing and the melodies so fitting that I just love her music like nobody else’s. Her creativity has no limit. Her music catalogue is so wide ranging that you just about find all kinds of scenarios described in there, fictional or autobiographical. From time to time I may listen to other artists, but Taylor remains my “safety” artist. I may not know her personally, and we will never know her whole story, but from what we know and what we hear from people who have spent time with her, we know she is a more than decent person. Honestly, to me, she feels like the most “normal” and “humanly palpable” (or “relatable” for a lack of a better word) celebrity. I will always despise people who hate her just for existing.

    Jim, Thank you for this presentation. With the expanded attention that Taylor Swift is getting after being named Time’s Person of the Year which has generated a large number of crazy and outright cruel responses, I find your comments interesting and enlightening. I would like you to consider my comments as building on your thoughts with a bit of a different twist.
    To lay some groundwork, I am an old guy in my mid 70’s who over my lifetime have become acutely aware of how significant music and the artists who produce it can become in shaping an individual’s emotional reaction to the events in a person’s life. The music of the 60’s and 70’s helped frame and color my responses to my college years and my entry into the military during the Vietnam era. Whenever I hear the Stone Ponies “Beat of a Different Drum” I am transported immediately into my college dorm room on a cold rainy night. It is not just a superficial passing visit to the past, I am there physically, and I remember the emotions, the feelings, smells and sounds. Other songs during that time and after have the power to do the same thing to me.
    So, the bottom line is that Taylor Swift has chosen a profession that has the potential to have a significant impact on a wide range of people. As an outside observer I would say she has really pulled it off.
    I became interested in Taylor’s music when I noticed my sister-in-law who was in her mid-50’s, at the time, really getting into it. I could tell that even though some would characterize this as teeny-pop music, something was really speaking to this 50-year-old woman who I cared about.
    Now I know that Taylor’s music is not written for me, but then again, I learned long ago not everything has to be about me. As an elderly male I know fully well what it is like to grow up and experience the ups and downs of life for a male of my generation. As for knowing and understanding the female experience, not so much. I would say that at least half of the people that populate my life and I care about are female. If I am going to be able to encourage them and help them it is important to understand the experiences they are having and have had in their journey through life. Of course, you can always ask, but sometimes with the most impactful experiences it may be extremely difficult to articulate because of the emotional baggage.
    Taylor’s music speaks to women and their experience of life. When I now listen to Taylor’s music (and there is a lot of it) I keep this in mind and hope it gives me a little understanding of what the other side is going through. What I have found in that music is enlighten and helpful (she’s really good). Remember, a little understanding can go a long way.

    As someone who also used to pride myself on hating Taylor Swift too, I must express my grave disappointment with this entire video even though it came to the right conclusions. For me, it sounded a lot like justifying the assumptions that her music was "plastic" because she's popular with women and as society reminds us, women can't possibly have good taste or like intelligent things! So, in watching this, it sure seemed like a man felt the need to step in and "get to the bottom" of whether or not Taylor has artistic integrity, because her fans certainly can't be trusted. I just wish he had also tackled that instinct - that desire we have to dismiss things that are popular with women specifically, and why it's okay to brush it all off as "plastic" or shallow, something made for pre-teen girls going through breakups, as if children alone could create a billion-dollar pop empire, or as if adult men don't also write songs about their romantic liaisons - it's just that, when they do it, they're merely writing about their lives and being 'deep' and when a woman does it, she's being vindictive or immature.

Along with Karma she's got three hit songs that will outlast the hype. So I guess it was worth putting up with her all that time until she got to this point.

    She was one of the artists I grew up with and, as a result, a lot of her music does have a special place in my heart. She seems like a pretty down to earth person compared to other ultra-famous celebrities, and I can respect that. The only thing that really infuriates me is her fanbase. They hype her up to be the second coming of christ or some shit. Sure, she is a good artist that has made some good music. But she is not some celestial deity worthy of worship. She is not, as the swifties say, “the music industry.”
