As a kid growing up in New Jersey, we would often drive down to Savannah GA to visit family. I always looked forward to these trips because we would alway stop at Shoney's for breakfast. They had mini blueberry muffins and at the time, it was the only place I ever saw them.
Mad ss skills. Great video. Yes, we played the game. The huge steer in front of the Sirloin Stockade was part of the landmark sign in my hometown of Wichita Falls Texas. In 1979 when the big twister came through and pulled the steer off of its foundation. As I understand it, they couldn't find it for about six months. Then a farmer up on the Red River called corporate headquarters and said he had found it half laying in the Red River on his property.
Thanks Paul! I was trying to come up with something to present at our Oct scroll saw club meeting. I was sitting in the drive thru at The Varsity and looked up and saw the sign and though 'I could cut that with a scroll saw.' Then I made all these and it was hit. Now I have a list for Part 2, with Hot Wheels. lol
Steve if you like making these, this should be a series! You could take requests and sell them but I loved watching it, and I loved the history tidbits. Great video!

Hey Dave! Thanks! Ha ha, that famous old question. Thanks for doing your vinyl cutter heat transfer video. I watched that this week, then ran out and bought a Cricut Express 2 just to get my feet wet so I can do my own tshirts and etch some shot glasses. I also thought I could use it for spray paint stencils.
Great video really like the signs lots of iconic signs we never traveled much as a kid but one place we went a lot was Natural Bridge State Park in Kentucky it was a great place for me back in the 50’s an still is to day my Grandkids love it
My kids (now 14, 15 & 17) always played the alphabet game during road trips. In fact, we drove down to Pigeon Forge this past summer and they still played it.
Steve, these are really, really cool. Probably the best one I can remember is not a road sign but a sign on a mountain. I grew up in San Diego and the official name is Cowles Mountain, but there was always a very large S on the mountain made from painted rocks. It was always called S-Mountain to us locals. I think it started as a San Diego State student "project". It is no longer allowed to be there as it was told to be an environmental issue, but that is my best memory of a sign.
Great idea, Steve. I remember growing up and taking trips across the country because my father was in the Air Force. One sign that sticks out to me was the STUCKEY'S signs. Some of them were painted on the green roof of the restaurant.
I grew up in Indiana and always went to Florida on vacation as a kid. We always played the alphabet game. See Rock City and See Ruby Falls were always my favorite signs to see. Great work!!

Super cool project Steve Your ending made me dream of our last vacation in France. A road sigh story. We met one guy who had put on a T-shirt with the road the 131 sign. It's from a song of a well known group here in Quebec. But what he didn't know is that in the song, they sing about the road that goes to my cottage. So one time we took a selfie in front of the sign and sent it to him. Now each time I go there, quite often I may say, I think of him who had no idea what that meant to us :))) Have a merry Christmas

Hey Tyler, thanks for watching and commenting. These were fun to make. I really like the signs that move. They would make cool whirligigs. I found a picture of that milk carton.
Never understood why companies aren't throwing products your way (Hello Sawstop, Rockler, etc.). You're one of the most wholesome and talented woodworkers on RUclips. I subscribe to a lot of creators but I'm especially excited when I see you've posted a new video. Love your work and attitude toward life Steve. Thanks so much for all you do, contributing toward our entertainment, but especially projecting your positive personality. Keep smiling. 👍😁
Hey, thanks! I already have a full time IT job so this is my fun hobby to make some stuff with my hands and just have fun. I do a few videos for Inventables CNC throughout the year and they have been great to work with. I have also done some fun stuff with Rockler in the past. I think I would do more stuff with companies if this was my job, but since I have a day job, it's hard to commit to deadlines and take on the added pressure for something I do to just have fun.
Great work & steady hands. I don't have that anymore. (Steady hands). We used to call out out of state license plates when we would be on road trips, but not the sign "game". Route 66 is a little over a mile away from me, and the biggest landmark here, @15 miles away, is the Gateway Arch. I plan to do a skyline soon with the arch.
Oh cool! Route 66 would be fun to do, but I've never been on it. I did go see the Gateway Arch once. I went to a park with an overlook across the river from it. It was next to a huge casino. Got a good selfie there. The skyline sounds cool.
The signs look great. When you piece back together are you using glue to hold the pieces in place? What blades so you recommend getting for someone getting started?
Hey Anthony! I used a few dots of Aleene's Tacky Glue to glue each piece in place. I suggest getting a variety of sizes and tpi from www.flyingdutchmanscrollsawblades.com/ I like the Reverse blades because they cut from the top and bottom of the board, so that you don't have to sand as much. Thinner blades are good for puzzle pieces. Low tpi blades are good for thicker boards, and higher tpi for thinner boards. Spiral blades will cut in any direction so you don't have to turn the wood to start cutting in a different direction, but they take lots of practice and it's hard to cut a straight line with them. Spirals are good for cutting portraits out of wood.
Awesome video, pleasure to watch. Your explanations were great! My family always pointed out Walmart trucks when we were on road trips, whoever called out the most on the drive won
Gotta give it to ya...this is one of the most interesting, generous, and fun channels I've seen on RUclips. You seem like an awesome dude as well. And these signs kindle a satisfaction and attraction with designs, blocks, logos I've had since I was a kid....so cool! You definitely have a new subscriber!
We played several games but in the end the "who can be quiet longest game" was the favorite from the adults. Slug bug also became very heavy handed lol. Iconic sign, I don't remember the name but it was a sleep walking, pajama wearing bear. We always called it sleepy peepee.
Nevermind. I just re watched the video and I see you did glue them and you did a flat table. I am going to try this but make super hero logos for my nephews for christmas. Thanks for the idea.
I did a presentation of these signs at our woodworking club virtual meeting and someone mentioned that. I'd never heard of it. Love the font of that sign...it's kind of baseball jersey-ish.
Great to see you back Steve! Those are some awesome works of art, would look awesome if you had a large scale model train set. As far as iconic signs, I live in Corbin KY and the original KFC is in the middle of renovations. Part of that is they've restored the original rotating chicken bucket that Sanders used to advertise the restaurant!
Thank you very much Charles! I would love to have a larger scale train set someday. I just looked up that KFC and it would be great to get that bucket rotating again. Very cool!
You've got those scroll saw skills down.

@@SteveCarmichael the Casino Queen in East St. Louis, Il.
Hopefully you went up in the Arch, spectacular views east and west.
Thank you Ryan! I wonder how many Walmart trucks there are. I suppose there would be a lot more than I thought.
That’s awesome! Great project and the beard looks great!
Thanks Brian! Yeah, the beard is coming along slowly but surely. Going to see how long I can stand it before cutting it.
They turned out really nice. Wonderful video.
Thank you Michael!
Fantastic video Steve! Great Job.
Thank you John!
Awesome video!
Great project piece these Steve, nice to see a video from you also. I think the gulf, or the burger sign are my favourite ones 👍
Thanks James! I was going to do the 76 fuel sign too, but it was similar. I remember 76 had the little foam balls they would put on car antennas.
Thank you very much! These were fun to make. It was a good challenge at practicing cutting such small pieces out.
Those are amazing. Excellent work Steve.
Thanks!
We played several games but in the end the "who can be quiet longest game" was the favorite from the adults.
Slug bug also became very heavy handed lol. Iconic sign, I don't remember the name but it was a sleep walking, pajama wearing bear. We always called it sleepy peepee.
We played slug bug. I also remember the bear, and I was trying to think of what it advertised when I came across your post. Do you know?
I found him, his name was "sleepy" from the Travelodge chain.
Ha ha that's funny. Never heard of the pajama bear sign. We used to call the VW game Punch Buggy.
@@SteveCarmichael We called it punch buggy, too. Me and my husband still play it. lol
@@starlineks ty. That's it lol. Have not seen that sign for a very long time.
These are really nice.
Thanks! I had fun making these. The small details in the signs and lettering were a challenge.
@@SteveCarmichael Just a question. Did you tilt the table by a couple of degrees or cut at 90%. Also did the pieces get glued back in?
Nevermind. I just re watched the video and I see you did glue them and you did a flat table. I am going to try this but make super hero logos for my nephews for christmas. Thanks for the idea.
Great Job. Burma Shave was another one like Rock City, they were everywhere.
Very cool!
