The prices were so massively inflated after and during Covid that it was not a massive surprise companies would go bust really. Greed.

I recently came VERY close to buying a caravan at £35,000 and was also very lucky to be in the position to buy in cash. After research I have done a complete u-turn - poor build quality, inflated caravan prices, storage fees, overinflated pitch fees … have come to the conclusion i could go on 35 £1000 holidays abroad just for the cost of the purchase - or 2 holidays abroad for the next 17 years …. it really wasn’t a hard choice

When Avondale went bust, I got a cracking deal on a dealer special 6 berth van. Had it 12 years best van we ever had just shy of 10k. Back when caravans were normal prices.

It’s called price-fixing, in this case by the administrators of the dealerships that have gone bust.
Not necessarily always a bad thing, if this wasn’t happening, prices would collapse everywhere and more dealerships could go bust.
But still, from a private buyer’s perspective, rather frustrating…
At the end of the day, a caravan is Only worth what people are willing to pay for it…..

What do I think first caused the price hikes & then the drop? Well, obviously supply & demand, but the cause of the demand was a lot of people entering the caravan market because their usual style of holiday wasn't available to them. Then as the world freed up after the pandemic they the drop is due to them deciding caravans were not for them maybe due to the work involved & returned to their previous holiday choices, leaving it to the seasoned caravaners. It'll get back to normal, weve had the hike, now the drop, then comes the leveling out.

Why can't members of the public attend or purchase caravans/motorhomes at auction? Serioulsy I looked into options and was dissapointed that you have to be a registered dealer to register/bid at such auctions. So unlike car auctions we will always be at the mercy of the dealer. On another note prices did go crazy my 5 year old Bailey Autograph cost me me more used than the brand new list price in 2019. Is it greed or consumer stupidity? If no one is prepared to pay the price dealers would not shift stock and would have to lower prices. I still remember being silently laughed at and ridiculed at every dealer I visited in the South West with a budget of 30k during the pandemic era, with eithert nothing in my budget or real wrecks massively overpriced. Now I would have a decent pick of tidy vans (motorhomes) for that budget. This no no surprise as the scetor of the population were either paid for staying at home or working from home saving massively on commuting costs now have to go back to the workplace and foot those costsare large proportion of them are most likely coming out of thier sub 1% mortage deals squeezing budgets even tighter. Omit from this the 100k i'sh and up vans because if you can afford one of those a little shift in the market is no big deal. I love my MH it was a dream to be able to afford it during my retirement I'll be keeping it for many years but I just wont be passing it on for more than I paid :(

It’s a shame that companies that have been going for many years have gone bust, just hope the leisure industry sorts out soon 👍 who ever is to blame let’s hope things have turned. But prices of some sites to stay is shocking and people I know who want to caravan have been put off by site fees. Haven in Tenby wanted over £800 for a week in my own caravan in school term. Sometimes caravaning can be a stress, especially if you've got whale equipment and heating and your forever chasing problems and resetting stuff and fixing things. I'm sure a lot of people think sod all the unpredictable hassle, let's just go on a normal holiday where we're looked after.

  • @totaltouring829

Here’s my take. The regulars of new buyers have dwindled through natural selection, age and agility for example,. The average wage earner and people on tight budgets with families have been priced out of the market due to their disposable income. With the economy slowing and inflation pressures there are very few buyers with the sort of money who can afford over priced goods.
The real question is, manufacturers will have no choice but to absorb a loss on gate prices which in turn will bring down forecourt prices.
The future of the leisure industry lies with encouraging younger consumers or consumers who have caravans reluctant to exchange due to quality issues.
You are correct that prices are higher than you expected at the auction but you kept your cards close to your chest on how much these units cost you.
Everyone loves a profit but everyone loves a good deal. Personally, I think there’re is more discounting needed to see just how much people are prepared to pay.

Watching the video and reading the comments two things come to mind. I live in France so see a slightly view. Firstly carravanning is becoming an expensive luxury and here very much the domain of retirees. We run a 2006 Sterling Europa pulled by a 10 year old car. We need to replace the van, but are holding back one due to cost of vans here, uk is out of the question due to post Brexit rules, and future car restrictions. Even if prices drop dramatically caravanning as we know it is going to all but dissappear with the older generations. Motor homes will the soul solution, hope im wrong.

Caravanning used to be a cheap holiday, now it’s a lifestyle choice at the same cost as many other holidays. When it was cheaper, people were more prepared to put up with the inconvenience. Now it’s on a par, having to carry your own waste across a field and paying £40-50 a night, plus depreciation, plus the initial outlay, plus the extra fuel to drag your bed around, plus potentially needing a bigger car (and unlikely to be realistically run an EV) etc. simply puts people off.

Prices are ridiculously high, all caravans seem to be thrown together. Walk around any dealership and spot the items that are damaged, missing or just cheap and nasty flimsy stuff - and that’s on new ones! Still using wood on the underside of the floors. We bought our Bailey Orion new in 2012 so I know how they’re put together due to the amount of work I’ve had to do to it. Now it’s fixed to my standard we’ll keep it until it wears out, no way we’d pay those prices for the new garbage. They do look nice though, but beauty is only skin deep. It’s a real rip off industry like double glazing and kitchens!

For a large number of normal people the cost of caravanig may become financialy not viable.

The second-hand dealers caused the inflated prices (low supply and high demand, dealers then highly inflated prices) they are now paying the price because of their greed. (prices are getting back to pre-covid levels and lower demand). This will be better for everyone in the future, the moral of this is DON'T RIP OFF YOUR REGULAR CUSTOMERS. You probably don’t remember but back in 20121 or 22 I commented on a video you posted about high prices saying just make sure you don’t buy too many vans at the over inflated prices and get stung when the prices drop. This seems like many dealers gambled on prices staying high and loaded up on stock and got caught out by the inevitable drop in prices. Especially with the build quality issues many are finding with Covid vans. Anything from 2019 could be one of those vans with quality issues….

To be honest, i have absolutely no trust in caravan dealers and the industry at the moment, I bought a 2006 lunar solaris on the 12/6 two weeks later I used it for the first time, all worked great, switched over to gas fridge at night and in the early hours it caught on fire, I informed my dealer who insisted it had had a gas safety check BUT appliances were not tested as they are accessories..... not their problem, fortunately I did take out insurance, my insurance is for market value and if you take the time to hunt the rare solaris 1 out they are between £5 -7000, what have my insurance come back with? £4000 minus £250 excess..... We have always moved with the market, prices are definitely coming down, but not as quick as even we thought, but as mentioned we will be selling some of these caravans around £3000 cheaper than anyone else. We did do a video a while back where we broke down our profit margins and what we actually earn after vat, tax and costs. Think it was called The dealer ripped me off or similar.

its the dealer fault, they over inflated prices and are now paying the price. i have no sympathy for greedy dealers, sorry but they deliberately over priced everything.

@@Nagsheadwarrior no they weren't, dealers I looked at and went to many to find the van I wanted were offering bottom book for trade in and to dollar for sales. It's a fact.
