Thanks mate for a straight-to-the-point review. I love my Tikka lite in 308W for sambar, light to carry, a pleasure to shoot, and does the job. I never shoot at sambar further than 120m maximum, just because the terrain is too dense and I never see them further away, hence is no point really in having a big magnum. Keep the videos coming!
👍🏼about time a straight up no bullshit review from a real hunter on 30 caliber I also shoot 308win for all the reasons you already know great all purpose round for just about anything in Australia that doesn’t cost a pay packet to feed keep up the the great work
Top stuff, an honest, straight to the point review with no fluffy bullshit, keep the vids coming mate, beats watching TV.
Thanks mate!
Great video. Clear and informative, you can’t argue with the data.
It will be nice to have the link to the document/ ballistic chart you used for that video.

"6.5 man bun". Just spat sausage our my nose 🤣
I love that you edited the burp 'in'
308 gets a lot of hate but fuck IV droped quite a few sambar with it 2 of them 30" one was a good big body the other was a little on the thin side
I hunt sambar with a 7 PRC which is obviously hyper affective at all realistic ranges. I did however just buy a Uberti Courtney single shot, falling block in 303 British as a purely close range, light sambar stalking rifle and it's fkn mint. Hits hard as and drops em. They say it's the same baillistically as the 308, the 308 being a more modern short action load. Anyway, can vouch for the 303
boils down to what someone can shoot accurately and comfortably.
100%.
I agree bigger is not always better, People can get caught up on energy aswell however anyone with experience knows that most of that energy can be lost very quickly if it's from a heart or lung shot on a deer , can defeat the purpose of running a large calibre.
High shoulder/scapular for the big rigs
I definitely subscribe to the rule that the bullet construction makes more difference than velocity.
The 6.5 Manbun!!! I almost fell out of my chair laughing. With your permission I'm going to plagiarize you on that one it too good not to use it.
Haha go for it
Thank you for your response. The other funny thing is how I instantly knew the exact cartridge you were referring to. Just found your channel through the double "rifle" shotgun videos. I thought I was the only loony to do such things. Really enjoying your channel.@@fhckoutdoors
@@lugerstonecock Enjoy mate!
.303 does the job beautifully
Oh I know, they all do, at an appropriate range.
More Sambar have been taken with a 303 than any other calibre !
My first rifle at 18 was an SLR, unfortunately, I don't think there is enough training in recoil management. Here's a rifle, here are the characteristics, here's how to take a sight picture. Let's go to the range and shoot it. Oh you don't shoot too bad soldier.Keep it up.
308 is perfect for me nice an easy to use and cheap to 👍🏾
I thought 1000joules was min for elk? Would you say sambar is a more muscular animal?
The common metric for Elk is 1500ftlbs, which is 2033 joules.
Great explanation, buy this man a drink! I've done shoulder shots on deer near cliffs to stop them going off and smashing their racks but I don't like the shot as it is a slow killer and requires a follow-up shot. Lung/heart is my placement of choice for long-range with the only bone in the way being a rib. A head or neck shot, if you know your gun well, will poleaxe an animal instantly and in a rewarding sight have a good rest and you know where to aim, study a skull as it is a small target, without blowing their jaws off only to lose them and have them die a slow painful death.
I'm looking at buying a new rifle in either .308 or 7mm 08 for Sambar and I'm getting different sales pitch messages. A video on the .308 sized case comparisons would be interesting, .243, .260, 7mm 08, 338 Fed, .358 Win.
Might put that on the list of videos
Great channel mate. Are you into Guitars also? I love my rifles and guitars. Great info no bullshit. new subscriber..👍👍
I am into guitars too
It depends where you’re shooting. Anything from a 275 Rigby up to 8x 68, 333 Jeffries, 350 Rigby ,will kill sambar cleanly out to 300 yards. However should you be in bear , leopard , elephant country, namely the Terai in India , you might consider a 375 H&H .
300wsm is what I use might be overkill but less recoil that 300win mag
Is it that noticeable?
On paper it looks near enough the same??..
(legitimate question, as I haven’t shot either)
Im not sure 300wsm should produce less recoil. Maybe two different guns. Different weights, recoil pads, muzzle breaks? Shorter barrels more blast/noise making it seem more recoil.
Actually maybe your correct. Because of a shorter fatter case they may(300wsm) use a faster powder cpmpared to a longercase
A really interesting subject. I have only been hunting deer once and we all carried 308's. A great mate of mine hunted with a 223,. he wasn't a cross gully bandit either. He got as close as possible, and the smaller round meant he did not damage to much tissue. I found your explanation really interesting, Keep bringing out the content, your descriptive method is to say the least , colourful. Cheers
223 is a very capable round, and back in the day 243 was very popular. Victoria now has a minimum caliber of 270 for taking deer. (Only big deer is 243 now).
@@fhckoutdoors Yes, I thought that Victoria had that rule. Keep bringing out the content. I do enjoy your delivery style. Reminds me of my days as a recruit instructor in the Army. cheers
I shot my first red at 20 meters with my Sportco .222 using Nosler 55gr Partition. A neck shot dropped it instantly! But i used both .270 and .308 Nosler partition on Sambar. I prefer to hunt and not target shoot deer! Sorry target shooters!
300 win mag for guaranteed kills
I'll stick with my 30/06, ammo is reasonable and I load my own! There's nothing in Australia that won't die after being shot with a 30/06, I do want a 300wm and a 338winmag but not because I think they're a better round, just because I want more guns😁👌💥💥
Nothing wrong with having more guns mate!
good vid mate cheers
The winner is 308Win shooting 150gr corelokt because its cheap. 30-06 with the 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip is a close second.
Then enter the 300 Rem Ultra Mag when you absolutely want to kill any deer at any distance, ain't no substitute.
300 RUM ammo is pretty hard to find and expensive here in Aus. May as well shoot 338 Lapua by that stage.
free o free mate......
Top video mate.. Just curious how come 303 is on the list when it's not actually 30 cal it's 7.7mm (.311"- .312")
Good pickup, and great question. I'll answer with a paragraph from Sierra Bullets, which explains it quite well:
"These bullets utilize the nominal 30 caliber dimensions common to the martial arms of several foreign entities. Most of these have found their way to the United States as either war trophies or were imported as military surplus in recent years. These include the British Lee-Enfields, the late-war Japanese Arisakas, the Russian Moisin-Nagants, SKS and AK-47s and their various clones from former Soviet bloc countries. The cartridges associated with these weapons are the 303 British, the 7.7mm Arisaka, the 7.62x54R and, of course, the ubiquitous 7.62x39mm. Most of these guns use a .311″ diameter projectile but it is prudent to slug the bore if any doubt exists. Given the wartime production conditions and occasionally questionable pedigrees of some of these rifles, this procedure is a worthwhile investment. Many of these rifles are capable of delivering decent accuracy and are powerful enough to serve for use on big game.
The 125 grain #2305 Spitzer Pro-Hunter bullet was designed as a hunting bullet for the Russian 7.62x39mm cartridge. It is also very useful as a light game or varmint bullet in the larger .311 diameter cartridges, such as the 303 British, 7.65 Mauser and 7.7 Japanese. This bullet adds some much needed versatility to these often overlooked but very capable cartridges for hunting. Positive feed characteristics are required for all semi-automatic rifles using the 7.62x39mm cartridge, and Sierra’s profiled ogive point shape provides flawless functioning. They have excellent accuracy, together with deep penetration and excellent expansion on medium and large game. The Spitzer shape provides a flat trajectory and high energy delivered downrange. These bullets are suitable for all of the larger .311 inch diameter service cartridges, such as the 303 British, 7.7mm Arisaka and 7.65mm Mauser."
I've been using a 3006 but the 24inch barrel on my sako is starting to give me the shits in the bush stalking.
I just brought a 308 with a 20inch barrel keen to get it out in the bush. Literally fuck all difference in stopping power all my kills are with in 100m. The 308 seems to line up good here
The only benefit of 30-06 over 308 is if you want to go bullets 180 and above. Shorter, handier rifles are far better for the bush. Good choice.
Awesome video. Off topic question, in your opinion, is 270 Win a bit undercooked for Sambar? As hunting rifles go, I only have 270 Win and 300 Win Mag. Tossing up between which one to bring for my first Sambar hunt. My 308 rifles are heavy bench rifles. Cheers.
270 is perfectly fine for sambar. Take whichever rifle you feel more comfortable using.
You need to talk bc when comparing 7mm remmag vs 300 msg. . When you choose a bullet with the same bc for both calibres you get a different result. Sure you know that... Anyway good video. Fucked if I can get my head around joules.. Sticking with the yanks on that one.
that just for men is working good mate.
303, two weeks holdover at 3 miles
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Matt do you load your own rounds? if not what factory load do you use or would recommend? cheers
I load my own for the most part.
308 OR 30-06 and never more then 200 meters. My personal choice 30-06 (180gr)
Good content just the way I like it quick question what grain do you use in the 308 and what brand are you using or are they reloads
When I had a 308 I was using Aussie outback 165gr
great stuff
good to finally hear someone say that you don't need the highest power round for most types of hunting, in opposition to most of the fuckwits i've met. i heard a story once where someone dropped a bear with a .22lr. not sure whether i believe it but the sentiment is true. you don't need a massive round to get the job done.
have a nice day mate
Man great info 🙏 would love your opinion on 308 vs 7mm08 for deer specifically in Australia. Availability of factory ammo options vs lighter recoil. Curious on your thoughts
Might be a topic for another video? I wouldn't mind talking about all the popular 7mm cartridges.
@@fhckoutdoors hell yeah
Horrible 30 cal list, like how could you leave out the 6mm ARC god cartridge second only to the planet destroyer 6.5 Needmoor?
Sorry
@@fhckoutdoors Lol good list, check out the .300 SAUM its pretty popular in the south western states in the U.S
Here in Canada, .303, .308, .300 Win Mag rule the 30's with a few .300 Weatherby's. The .300 PRC is kinda floundering. .30-06 is kinda drowning out a bit. Used to be the most popular cartridge for 30's for a while.
What are your thoughts on pistol caliber rifles for deer?
I’ve heard of people using 357 and 44 magnum, however I personally wouldn’t unless I was extremely close (under 50m)
@@fhckoutdoors i use a 357mag martini rifle in close country. At 30m a 158gr JHP destroys the heart and is usually caught by the skin on the other side of the body.
I 100% agree though, its all range dependant. Wouldnt take that shot over 50m.
Has more punch than the old 44-40 too. They have taken many large animals over the years.
If you're shooting 500 S&W within 100m.
300WSM hands down the best IMO
It definitely is a great round. Probably should have added it to the list
FHuCK Outdoors can’t fit em all in mate. 👍🏼 comfortable for shoot compared to a 300 win and shoots flatter and hits harder than all the others
Well I mean 300 Win Mag is virtually as good, minus the extra cost and feeding issues from the steep shoulders.
Shot a lot of sambar have we?
Yeah, but only with .50 BMG
I would take the 7-08mm over the 308 Win, I would take the 25-06 over the 30-06 and I would take the 28 Nosla over the 300 win Mag. For deer in Australia, but that's me, New England NSW.
Agreed. I’m doing a 7mm video soon
So to summarie if you use 308 (aka 7.62 used in SLRs) when you hit a deer it stays hit?
SLR is the only real battle rifle, and 100% guaranteed to kill any Viet Cong deer
@@fhckoutdoors hahaha
Where is the .270???
Probably in a list of 6.8mm cartridges. 27cal is not 30cal.
@@fhckoutdoors Mate, I hunted Sambar before you were born, I reloaded 8 different calibers and I hunted Sambar with .270 and .308 using Nosler partition bullets only! Was messing with you, relax! Love your Aussie style!
Lol sweet
308 to 500 meters 👍 all day every day!
Lol
May aswell go the win mag though, not like you’re shooting multiple shots a trip, I probably average 1 shot every 3 or 4 hunts at best
What's with all the swearing chopper?
