I work as a polymer scientist. I’ve been trying to think of materials that the manufacturer could use to prevent CT scanning. Usually you would need something like lead or concrete. Other lighter materials can interfere, but not prevent scanning. I know there are material scientists working on radiation sensitive pigments that could possible be used on boxes or labeling. But I think those materials are still in the R&D phase and not commercially available as far as I know.
Honestly, I would definitely not trust ANY loose case of Dynasty that isn't bought directly from Topps. As someone that does R&D for industrial radiography, it is not difficult and the bottom line cost (electricity, time, and depreciation of the equipment) to scan an object with the CT systems available to me is $30-75. So it is not expensive, and I even had college students build a CT camera system with materials from Home Depot, Harbor Frieght, and an SLR camera from Target for only $1200 (and most of that was the camera). This is going to be impossible to police. I really wonder if the only way Fantatic could take control of this situation is everything has to go 100% DTC, which I would argue is impractical/costly at this current time.
Maybe start packing them in sealed packs that cannot be scanned or x-rayed. Would cost the manufacturer more money but they have never had an issue with making the consumer cover costs for them so i would imagine this would be no different. Seems like it would cure the scanning problem but maybe not the weighing - I guess they can also start making sure every product weighs the exact same before it gets put out. Nascar driver type rules, ya know? 😅

Topps basically just said "don't do it...." but doesn't really care cause it doesn't impact them and they aint gonna spend money to do anything about it. Chris put it perfectly.
Call me crazy, but im starting to think maybe this is the beginning of a good change for the hobby. Fanatics and Panini especially in the coming years will see a decline in sealed products being sold, from an increase in collectors choosing to buy more singles instead, which was already started before this fiasco from box prices. Boxes have just gone downhill, well ever since I first bought a box of sports card as a kid in like 2008, and I think/kinda hope this is the final blow to remarket how sports cards are sold. They will be forced to remove the gambing part of buying products, leaving Topps now as potentially the only thing that stays, minus the random stuff. Im not sure exactly how the layout would be, but maybe some sort of reverse auction or??? Way to buy the new products, and the new products would be known what they are, kinda like some pokemon boxes. For example a Paul Skenes auto box with a complete base set that has a print run of 500, and starts at $10,000 and goes down a dollar a minute until it sells out. Something like that would benifit the hobby in my opinion, but I know many people like the gambling part, but rest assured you are gambling on if you can get that card cheaper before it sells out or not😂
Why can't we have some sort of sensor or marker that could indicate if the case/box has had x-rays on it. I guess could be issue at say airports or in the mail system. A way you could guarantee this case has never has x-rays on it. Kinda like when phones had the water sensor.
Yes, I compare it to those "Fragile Package Sensors". They have sensors for; Tip, Shock, Moisture, Temperature, Pressure, Gas & Chemical, Magnetic Field (Tdfn8) etc.
Your right ty, radiologists can use CT’s and find down to the smallest hemangioma in a spinal cord yet alone a serial 1/1 imprint 😂 how about instead of fanatics threatening people, they just find a way to package their boxes in a way where they can’t be scanned?
Did I look at the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition before my mom could rip out the risqué suits? yes, yes I did. But how was she to know? Also where is Kathy Ireland these days?
To me the whole purpose of this is to give people peace of mind so they’ll keep buying their products, wherever they get them from. All I hear is “we still have absolutely no idea what we’re gonna do about this”. That being said, at least it’s something. Should deter some people from doing it anyway. I still think you’d be out of your mind to buy some expensive product off eBay or something like that.
I was once a pack searcher, 1992 Fleer lol, was taught how to manipulate the cards enough to find inserts lol. Fast forward to 2019, got back into cards. Joined a group that brought up weighing packs…down the rabbit hole I went. When it was all said and done, I had joined a pack searching group and wow, the plethora of information and sample size blew my mind. Unless you can manipulate the pack and the ability to see through the wrapper, a scale will only get you so far. Don’t get me wrong, I could weigh a blaster of Topps Chrome baseball and tell you which ones had autos but you were always then dealing with the checklist.
I commented on NEO’s video, I wouldn’t be surprised if Fanatics already has the eyes on a couple people and this is just a warning to them. I’m sure some pissed off employee or former employee snitched and fanatics has them on their radar.
Hey Guys: Any thoughts on how to not go overboard collecting my favorite players from the 90s? I love so many of those designs (Flair Showcase, Gold Label, Finest) but dont want to be getting all my favorite players in all of these sets, would be expensive. What would be a good way to collect these cards without breaking the bank? Thanks.
Like do I buy gold refractors from each finest year for my favorite player? What if I don’t like one of the cards gold refractor how it looks? Do I get Row 0’s for showcase for them? Or just a mix and match of my favorites?
Chris here - Narrowing your focus is key, but it's also really hard to do. Finest and Topps Chrome both have great looking refractors from the 90's so maybe that;s a good place to start. I'd try hard to limit yourself to just maybe one set and try to do a run of a player every year.
@ thanks for the advice. Honestly I think I like the Flair Showcase cards even more. Take a look at like the 97 and 98 Flair Showcase Griffeys. Even the base is gorgeous. And I’m guessing those are less expensive cause people don’t talk about them as much as finest and chrome.
16:50 i thought this was standard behavior to be honest. topps heritage usually has 3 or 4 autos per case, i assume anyone that goes 4 for 4 would hurry and dump the case on ebay.
I’m generally too trusting but for buying cards I buy boxes from Topps or fanatics directly and singles off eBay boxes from Topps direct always seem to hit at a higher rate
This is a dumb thing for them to put out there... like Ty said, it only affects the secondary market and you cant enforce it. So just some empty words from them in my opinion.
If Fanatics imposes a penalty of having to spend 1 hour in a room wallpapered wth 2024 Jasson Dominguez SPs, for any illegal scanning, that will surely deter collectors from nefarious activity ✅✅✅
What if Topps infused an ink additive that will degrade and ruin the image if its exposed to CT level radiation? Basically whatever in in the box is destroyed if its ran through a CT scanner? IDK if CT is used in USPS for postal security.
@SpitballinCards That's probably way more plausible. Plus the buyers are screwed because the cards are destroyed and can't see them. So yeah! Boxes are white but turn black, there is an ink that turns black from radiation. Email topps. We solved the problem. Good work guys. Carry on.
As a Biomed technician who works on medical equipment, I would say that this act of fraud would be pretty hard to pull off. A CT scan takes slices of images several mm thick. So , I suppose one could learn how to read and interpret the results, but it would be quite a feat. Imaging cases and boxes would take some time and patience. Also, CT units require a tube that is quite expensive and the live if this tube is predicted in the amount of images. Tubes can cost tens of thousands of dollars and require dome experience to install and calibrate. I would think that these attempts would be out if the question for most crooks, even if they could get their hands on a small unit. Possible, but highly improbable to make thus scheme work.
unfortunatley, images of CT scanned boxes are all over the internet now and you can very clearly see the cards inside the boxes and packs. It seems like people have cracked how to do this fairly easily. sadly.
'prohibits'? lollllllll. Feel like this is a move pushed by their lawyers. Minimize liability so down the road someone can't sue fanatics for not 'preventing' this type of behavior. 'Look guys, we have this disclaimer. It's between you and the seller who scanned the product. Sorry.'
IMHO the only solution to this is to put the same kinds of controls as legalized gambling, insuring the odds for customers in product. I hope this would not look like all redemption cards in packs thus making weighing or scanning not possible. Also I hope this would not lead to Fanatics / Panini as sole distributors of product.
The only reason why people are hyped on this stuff is because of the overinflation of 1/1s and stuff. When a NT Logoman RPA or all the /99s RPA of a top rookie surface, that automatically loses value. Same thing can be said with any high end set. 2024 Chrome Update is basically useless. Paul Skenes, Elly, PCA, etc. I really have no purpose buying product because all the cards I want are going to be sold on Goldin anyways or just never going to be sold. 🤷♂️.
