- This is a day of history hunting that I will NEVER forget! I was blown away by what we found when we went bottle digging in Chicago. Thank you to Mario of the RUclips Channel @thechicagobottlediggers
Thank you too to Bryce of @Brycefoot and to Nathan and Erica.
Please go and follow the amazing @thechicagobottlediggers290 on RUclips
Well, I will admit that I watch the mud larking channels in the UK because of suffer from History Envy. I get juiced if I find a wheat back penny! Something that is 50, 70 or 100yrs old is an antique for us here in the USA. Nicola digs up pipes that are hundreds of years old and I just think how cool that is. This video today really brought it home that we do have our own history here.
Yes you do! ❤
I live in Virginia and I'm hot on the trail of some really old treasure! I did find a neck and sides of a bottle from the 1700s and a full bottle from 1895 so far! It's totally possible but not easy. Lots of research and trudging through the woods and creeks but totally worth it!
The enamel item at 14:26 is what I believe to be a medical 1920s basin for an enema. The spout at the bottom would have had rubber tubing. It would be inserted in the ole bum, then warm medicated water would then be poured into it. I don't think I need to explain the rest.😊
My grandmother was a nurse in the 20s. Once they developed new methods, they discarded the old equipment. She brought new unused ones home and used them for watering plants when she was away on vacation. 😅 the great depression made people very resourseful.
That toy car was so full of stories …. Thinking about the kids that played with it,,😄👍🏼👍🏼
I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you so happy as here in America in Chicago with your friends what a beautiful smile you have.
Mario & Michael are like you…low keyed but so smart about the history involved in so many ways 👍🏻🤩👌🏻
So lovely .. treasures from across the pond .. with wonderful people to Nicola .. thank you for the video ❤
Thank you for visiting parts of America and sharing the good things! Peace be with you and your family during this Holy season.😊
I'll be by myself for Christmas. But I was blessed with twin grandchildren 2 weeks ago. Best Christmas present ever.
How wonderful! Congratulations 🎉
Must have been video from the early summer. Nice to see Chicago in a positive light.
I will be at home with my husband and twin sons who are 20. We will have either turkey or ham with lots of sides and sweet potato pie. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Nicola and all who watch and comment. I can't believe it has been almost 5 years since I started watching. It was my pandemic thing. Watch RUclips and learn things. Which I did and I still love your channel.
I’ll never forget this day as well! So much fun and so much treasure! Thanks so much to Nicola and Mario and Nathan and Erica! My bottle collection doubled that day! Ha! Also, we all totally went into a restaurant, absolutely filthy after this, just like we talked about in the video.
Fab day! Loved every minute xxx
@BRYCEFOOT I subbed to your channel. Looking forward to watching your videos.
@ Thanks so much!
Can you tell where exactly where this dump is at?
@@LaurenMarshall-t6f Hi Lauren, the best thing is to contact the @thechicagobottlediggers
That one bottle . . . my dad grew up in Hammond, Indiana, in the 1930's.
Thank you Nicola.
My granddaughter loved the breast pump, she pumped her breast, after she had a still born. She fed many babies from her breast milk she saved. The named a baby Clinic named after my great grandson In memory of Sylvan.
So fun to see you in America!!! So glad you had an amazing time and found treasures! Do love your videos!!
Can’t believe I caught this video the day you put it out!!! I will have Christmas Eve church service at 6:00 pm. Then might have supper with my sister/husband and older daughter. Christmas Day will again be at my sister’s home. The most fantastic gift of my great-niece (9 mo) will be there with her parents. More family will be there also.
A fun time had bottle larking in the USA. Beautiful finds and fond memories - what more could you want. Looking forward to you and Si doing your Christmas thing. Always love those. Thank you Nicola and sending you much love ❤Teresa 🇦🇺❤
Thankyou for sharing your year of wonderful adventures! Have a lovely Christmas, and I can't wait to see what you will find next time ! My husband and I are going to have Christmas together with our 3 children and their family's at my eldest sons house this year. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Dunedin New Zealand ❤❤

Your channel is always so interesting! Thanks again.
Thank you!!
I’m am so in LOVE… Wow! Especially with your hands, as I’ve said in the past, you should be a hand model … remember a year and a half ago I was supposed to go with you and Si, to Mudlark… but got sidetracked with back issues. Hopefully the invite is still good and maybe I can come next summer. I promised Si. I would take you both to the Mayflower for dinner.
❤❤❤❤❤ Bert
This was enjoyable to watch you with your American friends. You found a wonderful stash! I will be home alone with my last dog while my son works. Merry Christmas to you and your daughter and a safe and healthy new year! All my best, Janet ♥️☘️
This was particularly fun for me I'm a Clevelander and the calls of the red winged blackbirds is so familiar.
Iowa here and yes redwing blackbird
Brilliant Nicola, I wish you and all here, laughter, joy and magic this season ✨️ Happy Christmas from Canada to one and all.❤❄️🎄🍁
Merry Christmas 🎄🎁🎅 Nicola and your daughter. I hope you have a wonderful day! Chicago looked fun for you I’m so glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed watching have a great few weeks ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💜
Great video. I love when you come to the U.S. The ridges were also for people who are blind and can feel the bottle.
Oh my gosh @8:45 I’m an archaeologist and i feel so bad when I come back to a hotel/grocery store covered in dirt from digging holes all day 😂
Loved this video!!
A very interesting time you had. We are looking forward to seeing more...Take care for now, love from Australia but normally Norfolk...x
Have a wonderful Christmas!! Australia! Exciting! Xxx
You're American friends are so sweet 😊
I'm American. Some of us are sweet believe it or not.
Just the greatest 🙂❤️
I lost my mom and dad this year so it’s the first time that I’ll be by myself for Christmas. I plan to do some treasure hunting that day which I look forward to. 🙂 I sure hope you and your family have a lovely Christmas. 💖 Heidi from Milwaukee WI USA
Best wishes to you Heidi from Tracy in the UK ❤
@ thank you so much, that means a lot to me 💖
What a great wizard oil story !!! Wishing you and your family , a very happy Christmas and New Year Nicola ! I also will be celebrating with my family at my home this year . We have just welcomed little Lucy , our third grandchild , so extra special day for us all !! ❤🦘
The container with the spout at the bottom is meant to hold soapy water for an enema, there would have been a rubber tube attached to the spout about five feet long. The container was held up high and gravity fed the liquid into some persons backside.
High, hot and a hell of a lot. The days before the disposable enemas.
Happy Christmas, Nicola!! Thank you for the lovely content all year long. xoxo
Wow. So happy you could find the breast pump. lol. Always welcome to The USA. Glad you had a great time. It’s a blast to find out new food PBJ rules. lol. Happy your home safe and always so happy to learn new knowledge. From anywhere. Thank you for the fun. Always
It's an old wives' tale that ticks fall from trees. Neither can they jump. They climb up some grass or a bush and position themselves on the edge of a blade, leaf or twig, reach out with their legs, and patiently wait for someone or something (usually an animal) to brush by them.
This was a fantastic dig. Also, thank you for the nod to American Gothic. I was happy to learn about the making of the blue glass Ball jars and the pretty marbles. Merry Christmas to all, have a safe and joyous holiday season.
I love your videos & Simon's also. I am awed at the age of the things you find. The UK has been around for eons & we are just whipper-snappers compared to your history. I never fail to watch with pounding heart when you start unearthing something, no matter where you are, but the Thames is my favorite, I love the birds & boats & scenery. So much going on, on the river. I am glad you won't be alone on Christmas, My husband & I will be with our daughter & her husband & 2 beautiful daughters & our son & his wife are coming up also, so the whole little clan will be together. So very happy about that. From Wisconsin, U.S.A. To London, England, Merry, Merry Christmas & may the new year be a better year for all! God Bless!
Thanks for this video Nicola. Loved the wizard oil story. Looking forward to the video about geocaching. My daughter and I do this too.
Christmas will be together with family for 2 days. The last day of Christmas will be with my daughter which is always nice and fun.
Have a nice week and till next time.😘❤
Great stuff on your shelves Nicola
I'm walking Xmas with my lurcher Bill😂
Have a wonderful time
Wonderful to see you visiting the 'colonies' -- in warmer weather! Sorry about the ants and the ticks! But Mario had a great spot for you all to excavate. Hey, I could use some Wizard Oil!!! Have a great time preparing for your Christmas!
Just a quiet Christmas,me and my cat.
The Wizard oil story reminded me of the novel "The Physician", by historian Noah Gordon. It is the tale of a 12th century London orphan and his apprenticeship to a barber surgeon. They travelled around England selling all manner of cures and potions of dubious ingredients. Centuries later, whether 19th or 21st, there's snake oil for sale. Merry Christmas from the shore of Lake Michigan!
That was riveting loved it ,no stress about Christmas ,gifts all done AND wrapped .i am alone on the day but many phone calls ,then great friend plus rescue hound for boxing day when i will be cooking the classic meal ,Christmas will be lots of fish y yummyness .glad the dog has his hat on, happy days to you and yours ,from the coast on Romney Marsh.
The British Museum's Gladiators of Britain exhibition will tour the UK from January 2025 to April 2026:
Dorset Museum & Art Gallery: January 25-May 11, 2025
Northampton Museum & Art Gallery: May 24-September 7, 2025
Grosvenor Museum, Chester: September 20-January 25, 2026
Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, Carlisle: February 7-April 19, 2026
The exhibition is a collaboration between the British Museum and Colchester + Ipswich Museums. It explores the lesser-known history of gladiatorial combat in Roman Britain and includes the Colchester Vase, a clay vase that depicts gladiators fighting. The vase has been on display in Colchester for over 170 years, so this tour will allow visitors to see it outside of the city. There will also be a Roman coin with an accurate depiction of the colosseum in Rome
Will delve into the lesser-known history of gladiatorial contests in Roman Britain. Tracing the footsteps of gladiators who once fought in Britain’s amphitheatres.
The exhibition showcases iconic objects like the Hawkedon Helmet, the only confirmed gladiatoria armour from Roman Britain. These artefacts, along with others, reveal the violent spectacles that entertained the public and underscore the significance of gladiators in Roman culture.
i'm traveling to be with family.. Happy Christmas and love your videos.
Have a lovely time xx
Hi, Nicola! Nice video! Went to the doctor a few days ago, and got a clean bill of health. Except for my back, which still give me fits. Merry Christmas and purrs from Pandora!
Wizard Oil is very useful. Nobody wants a squeaky wizard.
Looked like a successful dig. Entertaining as always!
The dots on the Bennington marbles are from when they were sitting next to each other in the kiln touching each other
It was so wonderful meeting you in Chicago in April. Such a happy event. I was excited to see a couple of photos of you & I in your slide show! Best wishes to you & happy holidays ❤ Heidi
It was wonderful meeting you too!! Xxx
I’m originally from the north side of Chicago so this is fun to watch. Happy Holidays!
Great to see this video of you here in the states! Tells me there's hope for some good finds here too . I temember your video with the bothle-diggers from New York City - I went to find them at their Christmas stall in Bryant Park after your video - bought a piece of jewelry from them that had been part of an old ashtray that they dug out in Brooklyn. I just purchased my calendar earlier today. Can't wait to see it!
To use the modern term Nicola, that dump revealed a big ARRAY of bottles and nearly all intact. Mario came across as a wonderful host. You certainly seemed to enjoy your stay in the windy city - loved that last pic of you reaching out for that impressive skyline. Wishing you a very merry Christmas and to your family. Thank you for a great year of mudlarking.
Funny as soon as you picked up the green glass I instantly recognized it as a Hemingway railroad wire insulator. I grew up digging dumps in NY. I heard red wing blackbirds so I knew it was spring, they are one of the first to come north after the winter.
Great video as always, Nicola! You should collaborate with Adventure Archaeology. Brandon's videos are awesome. He's from Brimingham, Alabama.
I'll check it out!
Merry Christmas All from Sunny California
Spending it with family in Riverside
God Bless us everyone...
Hi Nicola, great video, it's good to see how and what other people are doing around the world. As for Xmas I'm not stressing I live on my own so this year I'm doing something for me! I'm off out flyfishing for the day. Enjoy your holiday.
Sorry only just seen video, not been well, it was a breath of fresh to watch all those different bottles coming up. Xmas we at home as well, have good week
How fun! Mario is from my home town (Lansing). Thanks for sharing! ❤
Merry Christmas and all the best for 2025 Nicola.. cool video loved bottle digging 💚
Thanks for t interesting Bottle vid, nice finds. 👍.
Same to you, too.
Awesome adventure and new finds Nic. Really enjoyed it. Kiwi_larker
Awesome video Nicola !!! Lots of fun & interesting history. I too love bottles & have quite a few. My favorite is the beautiful colbalt blue 💙 ones !!! I was so glad that you asked Mario if he had ever found a cod bottle & he said yes. That proved that the USA doesn't make cod bottles & that they came here from England !!! My sister kept saying that the USA made them & I told her no. Nicola you got you some nice bottles !!! Enjoyed your video very much. Much love to you from the USA !!! 🙂💖🎄 Merry Christmas to you Nicola & your family !!! ❤️🎄🎁🎉
Todo hermoso e interesante Gracias Nicola
I really love this video, now I have to scour all the antique stores around here for the "Wizard Oil" bottle. Awesome finds found by all!
Happy holidays to all you across the pond!
Looked like a good day.
Christmas with the whole family Sunday. Christmas day my immediate family. Food and fun. Cheers and enjoy your Christmas ❤ from Canada
Thanks Nicola, wonderful video. I am having brunch Christmas Eve with my daughter's and their partners and my grandson. Then Christmas Day will be my four legged hairy guy and I. I hope you have a very happy holiday.
Great video 👍
What fun! Great finds. I used to live in Chicago!
Grew up doing the same in Australia. Always got such joy - esp finding a blue bottle!
I think you need an American husband me lol love the history you show us
Hi girls good 🇬🇧🎄👍👍👍👍🤣😂😅
Wishing you a wonderfully blessed Christmas holiday, and a healthy and peaceful New Year 2025! Greetings from Pennsylvania!
Wishing you and all of your viewers a lovely and loving holiday and a great year ahead! I showed my sister one of Nicola's videos and she agreed that Nicola is a warm and kind person and very enjoyable to share an afternoon with. Love to you all!
Nicola,
It was so funny watching you dig, especially with the Chicago Bottle Diggers you were talking with one of the twin brothers Mario. I'm also a digger and pre 1900 alcohol bottles (they are very collectible and some are very valuable). I'm happy to see videos when you're here in the States. Can't wait till your next mudlaking on the Thames River.
Merry Christmas Nicola!!!
Happy New Years!!!
A very enjoyable and fun video
I saw that wood African Dog Demon from circa the 1880s behind you on the table. That thing is creepy! 😂
One of my best bottles I dug is a half gallon Buffalo Springs Lithia Water bottle, but I have a small Gombault's Caustic Balsom bottle I dug, you'd like, and in the US, run like the wind if you ever see a Radithor bottle dug! That stuff zombiefied a famous guy in the 1930s and upon exhumation 30 years later, he was still highly radioactive! ❤
Ball / Mason is absolutely still going. They’re still the #1 producers of the jars we used for canning (bottling to Brits).
Chicago! You sure do get around Nicole what fun! This video was lovely with the red wing black bird singing the train whistle and the crunch of the dry leaves and branches snapping. Lovely to see the knowledge and enthusiasm of the diggers. I too was a fair day digger. I know the sights the excitement and the smells of bottle digging. I cherished my bottles. Yours is one of my favorite channels Nicole. Merry Christmas to you and your family. I wish I still lived in my Rhode Island home. I would not hesitate to invite you to my home and digging spot. Stay well and happy.
Your calendar is already on its way to me. That was a great idea.
A woman I directed in a comedy show this fall just told me that she watched the video. She was able to determine that the C.E. Johnson bottle was from Johnson’s Drugs on the south side of Chicago. Her old brother worked behind the soda fountain there in the 1950’s for “Mr. Carl Johnson,” who was an old man then. So cool! Thanks again, and Happy Holidays!
@@Brycefoot brilliant!
Doggie is looking smart......new hat?.....Gavin Brighton
Yes :)
It was great fun to see you mudlarking with your friends in America! Thanks for taking us along. Merry Christmas from Sally in Australia! ❤️🎄
This was a great video!
That was totally awesome, I'm already subscribed to them, I hope you have a great Christmas and a happy new year!
I like wonky bottles. I guess if I was collection bottles, I think it would be these wonky bottles. My one and only daughter lives just one street away and I'll be going to her house for Christmas dinner on Christmas Eve. Her daughter will be there and her son will be here but he will leave Christmas morning. That's why we're doing everytthing on Christmas Ever. Have a nice Christmas and hoping for a productive and Joyous New Year.
Happy Holidays, Nicola!
Absolutely amazing Nicola 🤩
Can't help but wonder if you'll ever get out here to the desert around Phoenix Arizona to search for things. I've found a few interesting things but nothing like your Roman coins and clay pipes. Mostly arrow heads and old dried bones and the occasional wreck of an old time car. I know a man who hunts for mushrooms but that's another story!
Loved every minute of this ❤
So many intakt bottles and blue ones! What a day and trip you had Nicola! I wonder how many extra Kilos your luggage had? Have a lovely time with your loved ones and Happy Holidays! I'm planning the next trip to London for April.
Such a great informative video Nicola you are always enjoying your fossicing and introducing so many other amazing people who share your passion. Have a Merry Christmas
Thank you so much!
Thank you again for this adventure.
Wishing you all the best during Christmas .❤
Live in NW Indiana, about an hour from south Chicago. Really enjoyed watching you dig so close to home. He mentioned getting sand from Indiana Dunes to make the Ball jars, we actually love to camp at the Indiana Dunes State Park about 25 min away. I love how you do the research, as a history lover, I feel like I always learn something. Hosting Christmas with our kids and 5 grandkids on Sunday, can't wait for the silly chaos. Then a quiet Christmas day with just the husband and dogs. Enjoy your holidays.
I ordered a calendar with Simon. Merry Christmas, Nicola from across the pond. Don't know if you remember, but I'm still waiting for you to make sea glass cats. Cheers!
I’ve been trying to find a bottle digger in Montana who might be interested in checking out the site where my great-great-grandmother had a restaurant and her husband managed the hotel above it. I have a photo of her in front of the block of buildings from around 1915. I know from a 1916 Sanborn map that there was also a drug store and barbershop in the block. Between the four businesses, there should be a good batch of finds dumped in the privy there. I know the site now just has a garage that the local fire department owns. Keeping my fingers crossed I’ll find someone out there!
i use mason jars and such for storing as much as i can. ... wish our packing would go back to glass with the embossing again... I love that ... Ball Mason is abot the only glass that has it still... love it.
