John gets a new 5 axis and 2 more mills, can Erik get some shelving and a couple new benches to replace the folding tables? 🤔🤔 thanks for sharing, super awesome that you guys finally have room to work!
I think you should build a small room for the tumbler that is gonna drive them mad after a while. Also maybe not their style but I think some dedicated sit down desk for assembly of the knives and finishing. Would be less fatigue over time. Seems like also more dedicated desks would help. Right now it seems like you are still setup confined like at the old shop.
I agree, the walls or enclosure should be a double wall with free air and no physical connection between them. The drone of finishing equipment would force me to commit suicide. I would prefer to listen to music or just plain silence all day every day instead.
Yea it doesn’t even have to be so complex. Heck a 2x4 Framed room like the bathroom with insulation would cut 80% of the noise. But being who he is it would probably be made to the highest standards and be 100% silent. Personally I would do that to all the air compressors and things that are constant sound makers.
For the door use double acting spring hinges and build a foam core door to keep the sound out. Just need a small window to make sure you don’t ram into someone. Also now that you have the space build a soundproof room or shed at least around the tumbler, this thing is a nightmare, poor guys!
Erik is a MASTER sharpener. My three knives (2 Norsemans and one Rask) are surgically sharp. Erik we love you. Keep up the good work, brother! You are appreciated. Thank you for testing out the locks and seating them by whacking the shit out of them. Sharpening can make or break a knife company.
Hey guys I run a shop too. I recommend you build a small partition wall on the side of the air compressor and back it and the surrounding walls with acoustic drywall with a layer eggcrate foam. This will cut down significantly the noise. You could go all out and hang sound dampening panels from the ceiling to kill the echo. Don't underestimate the impact on productivity of noise fatigue. Keep up the great work guys 👍!
Love watching your video's, you guy always have such good content and the direction your going is really cool. I have to say one thing though, the math doesnt add up for me, I own a small machine shop similar in size to you guys. Unless I'm missing something you guys have grossed maybe 5-7 million in the last 5 or so years with the amount of knives sold... basically how can you afford 8 ppl and and new shop with a high end machine like a kern? I don't mean to be all up in your business but what's your secret... or what do you know that we mere mortals don't? I cant be the only one thinking this lol
My guess is because they are selling 80% labor. a $1000 knife with a $200 worth of raw materials leaves enough money to pay for the machines and labor to make them.
If at some point I am able to make the buyer's choice list, I would do the crosshatch pattern with DLC and bronze accents with an acid tumbled blade. If it looks anything like I imagine, it would be gorgeous.
Very nice !! the drawer he has just below his work station should be moved up on the table, and maybe a door to protect them from the constant noise of the compressor ?
Cool video but i have a question couldn’t you theoretically use the kern with the amazing accuracy and the right tools to cut the edge almost perfectly so you have a finished sharp edge
Even if that would work it would be very time consuming and a poor use of such an expensive machine. On a cost breakdown it's likely much less expensive to have well paid skilled sharpeners.

And please give him some 💵 to buy some wood to enclose this loud tumbler. Or at least some hearing protection.

I was also going to suggest a small noise isolated framed in area for the tumbler!

@@bitterrootdieselperformanc6945 Also, since videos are almost integral to the brand, making them less noise poluted would be great.

Shop really looks nice. Will be interesting to see how the layout evolves over the year as you refine the processes.

The noise is from the tumbler
@@anthonyjones657 It is, and the enclosure for both is coming. I just forgot about those plans while filming

That might be my knife he’s working on. Ive got a buyers choice in for those exact specs
I would go crazy listening that tumbler all the day every day. Do yourself a favor and build a decent sound insulating enclosure for it.
That IS in the plans, i just completely forgot to mention it
@@ErikGrimsmo Rockwool FTW.

Always love new grimsmo knives content!!!!!
Now that you have the room. Build a sound enclosure for the tumbler. Even if it only takes the edge off, your ears will thank you.
I will say the same....the tumbler is always making noise in the backgroung...
Man you need a dust collection system.

Have you fit tested that mask with your beard?
Hi Eric super video I don't see the diamond lapping machine you stop using?
Love the products and the content, I'd really like to meet you guys one day.
"You know" count ^^
Having rubber anti fatigue mats to stand on would be a help
Cool video but i have a question couldn’t you theoretically use the kern with the amazing accuracy and the right tools to cut the edge almost perfectly so you have a finished sharp edge
No. Not unless you put a grinding wheel in it. You could get it 75% of the way, but not a "finished sharp edge."
Even if that would work it would be very time consuming and a poor use of such an expensive machine. On a cost breakdown it's likely much less expensive to have well paid skilled sharpeners.
Grinding dust and machines do not mix well at all. That precision kern will not be precision for long.
I keep looking at the empty shop and 2 roll up doors, yet your car is outside getting snowed on...
Subaru's are meant to get snowed on...The '83 Volvo will find a home in there shortly
That air compressor would drive me crazy. Was tired of it after this video....
what you're hearing is the tumbler. I agree with you though, that noise would drive me up the wall.
Is there a fair way to have a knife sharpening contest between 5 well-known guys? Not for speed but to see who can produce the sharpest blade.
