i’ve been wondering for years why they both have signature moves that are outclassed by 2 other moves that have more power points. this is like… a bare minimum change
Yeah, especially when you consider that they're both legendary pokemon signature moves which tend to be much more powerful than other more common moves.
Psychic had higher power but a lower % chance. The signature moves were the opposite: lower power but higher % chance. So it was likely considered a trade-off.

Heck it only made sense in ORAS because there you get them mid-game there so having a weaker STAB move balances the higher stats a bit, but that was made 12 years later after they were introduced...
They were already hella broken back in Ruby and Sapphire with Metagross and Regice basically their only checks and with how strong Soul Dew was, they really didn't need more power back then.
I would have preferred if Mist Ball set misty terrain or the mist effect and Luster Purge was like a stronger clear smog, but the useless moves getting power buffs is nice ❤
@@TheEmeraldWeirdoit doesnt actually. Misty Terrain blocks status conditions and weakens dragon moves, but doesnt boosts damage unlike the other terrains
@@TheEmeraldWeirdo It actually halves the power of dragon moves against grounded targets instead of powering fairy moves. This would mean that latias wouldn't even benefit from it because latias has levitate while it's dragon moves get weaker.
Oh my god FINALLY! I always have Latios in every team, and I never had the chance to actually use Luster Purge over Psychic. It didn't make any sense that they would nerf them that much, especially thinking about all the bullying the Sould Dew received through the years.
I know Meganium didn’t gained much b it it got Body Press, Knock Off, and Encore now, even if they are still better options Still no HA, still no Sleep Powder, Calm Mind, Earth Power nor the new Alluring Voice, and to top it all off it lost Aromatherapy cause it’s a deleted move
With so many other starters getting special treatment Meganium feels more forgotten now than when it wasn't in the games. Also personal opinion, but Meganium's 3D sprite still looks bad compared to the official art and gen 2-5 2D sprites, with the flower tilted the wrong way so it can't be seen properly.
I'm actually surprised these moves got a straight up buff without dropping the % chance. The whole point of the moves being 70 power was because of how good the % chance was. (Compared to Psychic being 30%, so the higher power was to compensate). But with these going to 95 power and still having 50% chance of dropping defense/attack, they are true upgrades that obsolete Psychic.
The buffs were unfortunately a generation too late. If these were modern legendaries the moves would have guaranteed spA/spD drop rather than just a 50% chance. The power creep this gen is just nuts. It's painful to see as I love the Lati twins a lot.
Typically, I hate the lack of attention to detail GF has given to a lot of aspects in recent Pokémon animations. However, I’m happy to see how clean all of the lati overworld animations look and it seems like a step in the right direction. Looks like they have actual personality and life, and it’s very well done.
That is so unbelievably sick man, Luster Purge is my favorite move oat 💙 the thing is tho, at least in 6v6 the low PP is still a major issue :( I remember messing around with it before in past gens, the SpDef drop could pull its weight at times despite the low base power but for a move you want to spam only having 8 PP max is so tragic.... But hey, count your blessings We still eating 🙏
I'm happy these moves are finally usable. There was no reason for these Legendary signature moves to be weaker than the more common Psychic and Psyshock.
You know what would buff the Latis? If Game Freak completely get rid of Levitate and replace it with a tag. Heck they are already doing this anyway. Pokemon enter the field with either a "Grounded" or "Hover" tag based on the specie. Pokemon that used to have Levitate can then be given different abilities. Pokemon that obviously enter the field flying but have neither Levitate nor the Flying type (ex. the moths) also get the Hover tag. Effects that involve the grounding mechanics are then just updated, Smack Down will switch target to Grounded if it have Hover, Magnet Rise would switch user from Grounded to Hover, etc. Latias can probably get Barrier. Not sure what to give Latios. Maybe Flygon can finally get a useful ability too. I always wanted Tinted Lens on it.
95 BP on a 5 PP Signature Move and can debuff seems weak to me. I would bump it to 100. I still gonna stick to Psyshock in case I might get across Blissey
Doubt Latias will run mist ball, since its a bit more of a defensive girl and cares about its po, but latias may? Run Luster Purge, maybe? Its not significantly better than psychic and the pp increase can be signifigant. Still cool buffs,
@@daniellejackson6543 Latios wouldn't have as hard of a time getting past its checks that aren't outright immune to Psychic. Latios' Special Attack is fairly high and its movepool is pretty vast.
I think Latios will definitely run this. In singles, it means a lot of defensive switch-ins to Latios has a 50/50 chance to get 2hko’d with the spdef drop. Kind of like how Toxapex could punish a lot of ground type switch-ins with scald. In doubles, the pp drop doesn’t matter as much so it’s basically a way better psychic.

Sometimes accuracy too or adding on a drawback like with Close Combat. Though Close Combat's drawback isn't terribly bad and is more spammable than Superpower and more reliable than Cross Chop.

The fact that even the buffed version of these moves is still less strong than Lumina Crash really crystallizes how crazy power creep is
