The HUGE Ability Buff That Got Nerfed IMMEDIATELY

  • The ability Cud Chew got a secret buff that made it much stronger, but it was nerfed again almost as soon as the community became aware of it. I explain the mechanics of the buff, how strong it could have been, and why it got nerfed again.

I'd just like to point out that Farigiraf also gets Baton Pass. Even with Cud Chew working the way it was intended, and even without Stored Power, Starf boosts could still wind up extremely useful if you wanted to lean into that (in SV rather than Smogon). You could also just go with a more standard pinch berry and one of Farigiraf's own boosting moves if you wanted something more predictable.
Anyway, still totally perplexed by the slots each of Farigiraf's abilities are in. You'd totally expect Armor Tail to replace Inner Focus and Cud Chew to replace Sap Sipper, but nope!

I wish I had known about that before it was patched out. Infinite heals with sitrus, that just makes Flare Blitz and Wave Crash super spammable.

Really interesting mini history and Farigiraf strategy, though may I please ask: where did you find that Harvest is 30%? It definitely used to be 50% and to my knowledge it still is, I even Googled Harvest and 30% and I can't find any source saying it's 30%, at least on the main/typical sources that Google churns out.

It was rare after two turns to not get my berry back. I definitely would have noticed or suspected something was up if it was only 30%, you'd definitely notice it not working as consistently.

This glitch actually did run pretty rampant for a time on BSS high ladder. Farigiraf w starf cud chew essentially acted as a drawback-less moody.
From what I saw people who abused this glitch didn’t go all in on it, but if you managed to get a favorable matchup or even just a lucky roll and starf boosted the right stat, it became ridiculously easy to cheese wins.

Or and endgame sweeper, with the berry that raises his attack stat, with the same set. If set up properly, it can deliver 200 BP reversal with +2 attack, and can even trade bulk up for rapid spin, to be at +1 speed too.

Man, Nintendo really likes no-fun zones, huh? Even if it was supposedly a glitch, I'd argue that the buffed version is actually more in line with the description - you once again ate the berry, and the ability activates upon eating the berry, so it should activate again. If they're gonna keep the nerfed version, the ability description should specify once per battle, or perhaps a better wording would be once per berry, because I imagine that if the ability has been previously activated, but later in the match a berry gets switched into your held item slot, the ability would trigger again if you ate that berry?
