Hey Kaleb, we chatted a few months back. I’m in St. Louis in the West End. I own a 1899 brick foursquare house. I took your suggestion and will start a channel to document my home renovation within the next two months. I was wondering if the product you’re using to strip the latex paint from your stone would work on brick? The front of my brick is painted with a red latex paint. It looks great but I would like to show off the decorative brick.
Hey Caleb, I’m currently studying Conservation and Restoration in University. One of the materials we study is stone. Before applying anything to it you should use a product for consolidation, since it’s coming apart in layers. And then you can actually use a lime mortar to fill the “holes” before painting it. Love watching your project trough the videos, one day I hope to do something like it myself. Much love from Portugal 🇵🇹
Kaleb there are so many and varied things that you include each week and this is why I love watching. What a great turn out for the tour. The old photo of the house real treasure.
So to recap, this week was all about removal! The woods look GORGEOUS once you get off that filthy, gunky shellac. Very nice indeed. Wish I could help. Very interesting about removing the paint from the exterior stone. Wow....fun to have ppl coming through. The fireplace tiles are drop dead gorgeous!
I am so impressed with your passion for restoring this grand lady! You are one of the few that are committed to historic restoration! So many just renovate and destroy features that should be saved. Thank you so much for doing an outstanding job!
I just loved seeing all of the people who came out to see your house!!! I love the colors you chose for your house! It's all coming together!! Very, very cool!! Peace, Kim ~
I hope as your last act of restoration that you have the "crown" (was it wrought iron?) replaced on the top. You should have a BIG ceremony or something at that point. Love everything you and Kim are doing. Truly a labor of love.
Kaleb those tiles are stunning. We are so glad to see them in the home they were made for. The tours looked like they were a hit . Like the color of the slates .⛲️Stay Well & Be Safe
Seeing the large group of people in the house gave the true perspective of how large the rooms are. And how fabulous to have that original photo of the house with people in period dress in the front. Fantastic!
You might want to hit the genealogical society in your area. They may have historic photos, and newspaper articles describing the house building and colors of the home. There might also be information on events held at the house, etc.
the great thing about these old homes with old wood work still in them is that the wood they used is old growth wood. Highly prized wood from virgin forests. That gives you those tight growth rings that really makes it beautiful. To say nothing about the fact they were made by craftsman, not assembly line robots with routers for hands.
Yes, you are correct about the city of Dresden. The picture is of the Katholische Hofkirche cathedral and it still stands. The Allies had instruction not to bomb it for historical reasons so most of the entire city square is intact and is wonderous.
Very cool find with that book. Every week I am more excited to see it finished. Even though it means that there will be less for us to watch every week.
There are years left promise. Plus who is to say i dont save another beauty after this one. That being said if i do get another home later in life i wont be moving this one is my forever home.
thanks for explaining all the decisions you guys are making to restore this beauty back to its former glory! great nuggets of wisdom from your research!
Thanks for the color chips! My wife and I are restoring an Eastlake Victorian Cottage, about the same age as your house, and we were able to choose our color combinations from the chips in your book! Again THANKS!
The lime rendering that they use in France for the chateaus and the castles does give a yellow hue to the building quite lovely actually, just remember your house your decision. I do like the yellow & green pallet for the old girl. 👻🎃🕷️🕸️
Great job you and Kim are doing, its refreshing to see young people taking the care to restore an old house to its original condition or as close to that as you can , well done from Central Scotland🏴
What an incredible find! The book of houses and the colors is beautiful. Every video you do pulls me in more and more. TY for sharing her and the journey.
Thank You both for your loving and caring for this amazing and beautiful home I’m in awe.I love when something can be restored. You all are amazing.Thank you 🙏🙏🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
The Pocket Doors are Fab!!! For SURE they will come out WELL, when finished. The Book was a Great Find. The Colors will match your home🏡. The "first fix" electrics will be hard. If you do a Plan for All the cables It will make it easier to plan a route for All the cables & label all the breakers on the Fuse Board. It would be interesting to know how you will plan the Heating of your home. The Original Radiators when working will take time to heat up. When Warm they will hold the heat longer.!!! To have The Original Radiators is A Gift. Good Wishes from Ireland ☘. 🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀🍀
This is a very exciting video Kaleb as you are truly getting a feel for this house. I love how you are pulling off all of the "old" and are returning everything back to "the original"....love it!! You are doing an amazing job and have done so much in the limited time that you have. Well done!! The book with all of the swatches is a real blessing as I think it truly gives you an idea of what was. Love the colour choices you picked too, the house is going to look amazing. Thank you for the journey!!
Caleb, you have done an amazing job. Know the work has been extremely hard, but, she is going to be beautiful. The care you have given her. Like the yellow and green color pallet. Love those pocket doors..Wow.
So beautiful, you are living my childhood dream. I love the yellow, cream and greens. I know bright colors are often used but the subtle colors really makes it special.
That book with all the original paint samples and house drawings from the 1890's is incredible and invaluable for the correct paint colors! It's going to look so stylish when done!
Sorry to hear that things did not work out with the electrician. On the up side, most people are unaware, that you can save a great deal of money by pushing wire yourself. Later, you can bring in another electrician to make all the electrical connections to the circuit breaker, plugs, and switches. As long as you leave enough wire for the electrician to make all the connections, you'll be fine.
I love the colors! Such fun to see the stone being freed from the latex straight jacket. You are so thoughtful of the home and respectful of the people who built it. God bless you as you continue to make the old girl shine!
I just found your page less than 2 months ago. I am sad and excited to say that I have watched all of them and now am caught up. Down side, I now have to wait patiently for you to upload more videos. I love your house and love how much you care for it. So many people want to destroy the house's history and you guys are bringing it back to it's glory days. You are doing a great job and I am learning a lot from you and your adventure.
I love that book! Such an incredible find! You two are doing this with so much respect to the era and the building. A BIG BRAVO from The Netherlands 🇳🇱
I haven't seen anyone else comment on this detail, so I will. Your channel's title card/logo is lovely. I really enjoy your work and send best wishes for continued success.
Hi Kaleb, I'm sure that the limestone is breathing much better in the areas that you treated and have removed the paint. It's so much work but it will save that beautiful stone. The pocket door section that you cleaned look so much better than the dark color it is now.
To find that book in the house is amazing. I think your color choices are pretty spot on. You have come a long way, I know you have a lot to do but, what you have done is amazing. I like also the natural look of the wood not the dark. I love seen the grain of the wood. God Bless.
I am really looking forward to the restoration of the mansard dormers. My eye always goes to the crooked gable and the missing trim pieces. Once that area is restored, the whole facade will really start to come back to life. Are you going to recreate the decorative railings above the mansard?
Ooohhh I love the colors you chose for the outside. It is going to look spectacular. That was a cool time lapse. The clouds look so neat. Glad you had a great tour turnout. How exciting to have people back in the house admiring it. Keep up the great work. Say hi to Kim for me. 💜
Originally the stone was not painted, but over time as the building began to have damp issues then people would paint over the stone. It's best to leave the stone bare. You can sand the stone to remove small imperfections and clean off paint. To stop damp issues there is a simple solution that is guaranteed to fix it - you must install a trench with a French drain around the entire perimeter of the building at the bottom of the outside wall. Most important is to have the drain tile/slotted pipe installed at a minimum of 100mm below the interior floor level (naturally when you have a basement you need to dig the trench deep enough to go 100mm below the basement floor level). Fill the trench with only stone - no organic material. It goes without saying that any Cement Render and/or Gypsum Plaster must be removed from the walls - both trap water in a wall and cause damp issues.
Frank and Kerry's adventures - I will refer you to look at Peter Ward RUclips channel. He explains in detail in many videos all about problems in old buildings, dealing with the root causes of damp and the damage Cement Render and Gypsum Plaster do and how to fix.
oh I love that light colored wood on the pocket door If it were me I would go with that color it would lighten up the down stairs but lol it is your house and you say you want it to be the way it was suppose to be
It is so AWESOME you found the book, you're now down to the stone, and can see original color! The interior of the house is really coming to life and you've made great progress. I could hear the Mrs. organ practicing from the corner shot you took in the parlor. Can't wait to see it a year from now. Running your own electrical lines yourself is the best decision you could make. Hope you find a local preservationist electrician to connect you at the end.
You just keep amazing me with all the work and the results you get brilliant Love the mock up of the building Glad the tours went well Love Sue❤❤❤🇬🇧❤❤❤🎃🕯👻👻🕯🎃🍀
This is the only channel I’m glad I enabled notifications for.. always a wonderful surprise to see you’ve uploaded a new video. They’re so captivating. Keep up the good work man
That stone looks so much better after all your hard work. And that wood, just wow. Can't wait to see her done. If I'm able and you give tours or have part of it as a B&B, trust me I will be there to see her in person.
You color scheme will be lovely. I appreciate the clean look of glowing wood with its grain showing. The woodwork will shine. Don’t think the Victorians were as gloomy as we think, they went crazy with color!
I honestly hadn’t thought about it before but white-fronted buildings were much more of a Georgian/Regency thing (not sure what that era is called in America but you’ve got a lot of the architecture in Washington, including the White House), the Victorians generally preferred colour. So, now I come to think about it, it doesn’t surprise me that the house may have originally been yellow and green.

Why would anyone that had a mind paint the wood in this Mansion beyond me, Such a great job . Hats off for the tour
That reprint of that house book is blowing my mind! I feel i could sit and browse that thing all day!
I agree with your decision on removing the Stain on the pocket doors.👍👍. You know what you are doing. Great job

Good people can bring life to any where, even to nowhere when in the spirit. All you are doing is so very good. Thank you for this vid and the tour.
I really love the color of the wood on that pocket door underneath all of the shellack! Its a beautiful, almost strawberry blonde, color.
I just saw that my local museum is opening an Alphonso Mucha exhibit. I immediately thought of you.
I hope as your last act of restoration that you have the "crown" (was it wrought iron?) replaced on the top. You should have a BIG ceremony or something at that point.
Love everything you and Kim are doing. Truly a labor of love.

Seeing the large group of people in the house gave the true perspective of how large the rooms are. And how fabulous to have that original photo of the house with people in period dress in the front. Fantastic!
Charming tour and color research. The old girl will indeed shine.
Woo, the rendering of the house in color is gorgeous. It gives us an excellent idea of what you are aiming for.

Thanks for the color chips! My wife and I are restoring an Eastlake Victorian Cottage, about the same age as your house, and we were able to choose our color combinations from the chips in your book! Again THANKS!

Hello there in Scotland! 👋🏼
I am so excited to see this finished. You are doing such an amazing job restoring it! I love those different wallpaper options in the living room 😍
The cherry and oak pocket doors are stunning!! They are going to clean up nicely and really give the rooms a warm glow.
They are my favorite
Watching again and just noticed the wrought iron crown on part of the Mansard roof. WOW! What a beautiful home she is!
The tiger striping is called medullary rays and is especially pronounced in quarter sawn lumber
I envy the folks who got to go on the tours!
What an incredible find! The book of houses and the colors is beautiful. Every video you do pulls me in more and more. TY for sharing her and the journey.
What a miracle that you found that book! These things that keep coming into your lives are meant to be there at that time! How wondrous!
