I was a "Strat guy" exclusively for 17 years straight. I've played every level of the things from MIM to vintage. I bought my first LP a year, or 2 ago. It was a new (at the time) custom shop. Then I bought a few more, then my first Tele (a custom shop), then my first 335 (a custom shop), and now I don't even own a Strat. I went straight for custom shop models to understand what the pinnacle of that style guitar was like without investing in vintage pieces out of the gate. Nothing wrong with a Strat, but you'd be surprised as to what type of expression you can get out of different guitars that a Strat just can't touch.
@@rw2806 Totally agree. Personally I find that a Gibson (particularly Custom Shop guitars with correct vintage-era tone) can produce more nuance than Fenders can across the board. I actually find Strats to be some of the least versatile guitars around. Their sound works and works well for what they do, but they always just sound like what they are. Teles and especially Les Pauls can blend better in mixes and can sit in the back when they need to. A Strat always stands out like a sore thumb and it's blatant whenever someone is playing one. I've heard Teles sound like 'Bursts and vice versa depending on how they're being played and what they're being run into. A Strat always just sounds like a Strat. That's fine if that's the only sound someones wants. Personally I'll take a good LP any day.
@@Dagger_323 A good Strat belongs in the herd. They are amazing. Same for Telecasters and Les Pauls. Finding ones with mojo in every class... not so easy and finding a LP that sounds like like a Burst... almost impossible. But close is good enough. They all sparkle in their way and when you get a good one of any of them, you run less gain because the sound clean is so amazing.
Yeah, something is up...and that is an understatement. There are way too many floating around. I was listening to a podcast with Kirk Hammett on it a few months ago (I believe it was Dean Delray's, 'Let there be Talk' show) and he was saying that there is a non-playing collector somewhere out there that owns over 100 of these (I can't remember the number..but it was staggering..especially when you consider the price tag on these and the small # produced). So if one guy owns a huge number...and then there are all of the ones that are owned by all of these people selling or showing them off online, where are all of these others coming from? hehe. When these were originally purchased in 59/early 60's, the buyers did not know that these were going to be worth 100's of thousands of dollars 60 years later...so they played them. There are wayyyy too any in great shape. People played them. Even when they were new, these were not cheap guitars. It seems like the guitar world has lost all of its morals.
If all the Rock musicians from the 60's going on to the 70's didnt use these guitars the value will not have been these crazy prices, imaginé I remember back in the late 80's a burst cost between 5000- 9000$. Now its more than a house.
@@rv6205late reply but: I think it's just magic. No rhyme or reason to it. The best sustaining guitar of mine is an early 70s SG that feels "dead" unplugged, not resonant at all, body barely vibrates... but the strings ring loud and clear for a long long time. Bizarre 🤔
@@OldManJenkins23 there are theorys on that too...that non resident guitars transmit all the energy to the strings and dont absorb anything .....I love the fokelure of guitars , i never needed a basball mit with mojo lol but guitars are a different story
I have been playing since I was 8 years old. I am 65 owned a lot of guitars. My suggestion do not ever sell that guitar and amp. That burst with that amp has the most amazing tone. How Joe sold it is beyond me. Even though Nerville is home to over 300 guitars not to mention the road guitars. I dont have the financial resources to ever own a burst so the ability to hear or occasionally play one is a treat. I bought a 1960 reissue and play through a tweed that is the best I can do that R9 howls. Thanks for sharing.........
I could never own something like this. I could never afford it. I would be afraid to play it. And if something happened to it I would never forgive myself. I appreciate all the wonderful players who preserve these pieces of history.

It sounds like a synthesizer, it's so damn clear sounding! UNINHIBITED. I miss seein what you can do left handed with some of these guitars. I know people complain, but it'd be cool to see maybe both you and someone else demo guitars sometime! Consider it!
Grovers were standard on the Les Paul Custom from 1958. For the Les Paul Standard or as it`s very often referred to as the Burst, Grovers were offered as an upgraded option.
Good video. Interesting these old standards look exactly like a cheaper new Gibson Les Paul classic. I think this guitar sounds great in the video... but about on par with any new Gibson Les Paul studio through standard. A lot of people think just because something is vintage it sounds better... which isn't always the case when you play them in person. For instance I have a vintage PRS custom 24 at my house and a new one. The new one sounds significantly better... probably because of the newer pickups... but I definitely appreciate vintage stuff and nostalgia that goes with them. And the simplicity of the older designs and finishes.
Great sounding guitar ... my 2018 Gibson True Historic 60 sounds like that. If you can't get one of these, get one of those. Love it so much I sold off most of my Gibson USA guitars and used the funds to buy a small handful of Custom Shop Historics, the 60 is my favorite.
John B. Agree. I got a 60th 59 and it’s amazing. 100% vintage spec except no Brazilian board. It’s probably 95%+ of the tone of a vintage and way cheaper
@@kevinbrodess2684 Yes, agreed. I've since added a 2018 Historic 60 reissue which was a CME 60 with partial 59 spec like the first issues in 60 with leftover 59 parts, bits and pieces to go with my other Historics. Just blown away by the tone.
I like this one too. Aaron has the best job on the planet. Deservingly of course. But with this job must come the desire to own one of the great guitars he gets to demo. I feel for you brother. It has to be tough. I can only imagine how these old gems sound in person.
Depending on which one you got ahold of you're either blown away or disappointed. Not all of them are mythical tone monsters just like today's guitars. But it is an experience.

I never understand why these holy grail guitars are not reviewed through amps of the same period - I can’t tell it apart from anything else modern. Far too much gain and nothing to set it apart for the viewer other than smitten presenters and some memorabilia. No one discusses what we need to hear.

Hogwash !! It has a great tone...There is not enough overdrive here to kill off the voice of that guitar. It is very articulate, defined and with good dynamics and has a distinct sound of PAF Gibson through a slightly overdriven amp.
Does the tail piece have posts for the strings to attach too before they wrap around, like a Bigsby? If so it’s no wonder they changed it..... other than that it’s beautiful!!!!
I replaced many a set of Klusons on Gibson guitars, with Grovers or Schallers. If anything, Grovers will increase the sustain of a Paul due to adding mass to the headstock. This Paul is absolutely phenomenal in appearance. Did I say, "YUM," yet?

How can you even string a guitar with 60 year old Klusens? It sucks breaking a tuner that's worth $2000 a set. When I sold my 'Burst the originals were in the case along with the Bigsby. Thanks Jay!

Hello Andy I have a 2018 historic 1959 Les Paul lemon burst finish it’s got a lot of clarity in the pick ups when you roll back the volume but it’s got a lot of punch and rock out too !!!

It's so awesome that you can pick up an old guitar and amp and it still sounds incredible so many years later. I love it.
Those pickups are on a different level. Clear and warm.
there's like plenty of there are way better than this tone and x10 cheaper than this classic vintage Gibson tone.
I'm sure that amplifier is doing a fair amount of the heavy lifting.

What's crazy is that it sounds just like my Les Paul standard after doing the 50's wiring and melting the wax out of the chrome covered humbugs.
