Glad to see you back in Greecè. In more than twenty yeaŕs of living and woŕkinĝ in Africa and Europe i found Greece to be, by far, the friendliest and best country for a great holiday. The food, the wine, and the ladies are beyond compare.
Hell yeah. May is one of the absolute best months to be in Greece imo. Before the summer tourists arrive, and the weather perfect and the landscape is green and beautiful.
Gia sou Gabriel...welcome to Greece! Just to let you know...if you don;t already know that this is the Megali Evdomada and on Sunday 5 th May we celebrate the Orthodox Easter. Wish you to enjoy your 2024 Greek adventure. Always enjoy watching your trips!
14`.00`` : ~30 years after the ``Marathon Battle`` the Athenians build a monument (a white marmor pillar) in memory to their win ! They called it : Τρόπαιο(ν) = Tropeo(n) = Trophy Some fragments of the original pillar are in the Museum.
Welcome back Gabriel! As we learned from school,Phidippidis ran to Sparta to seek support from the Spartans to face the Persians who outnumbered the Athenians. Then he ran back to Marathon to fight in the battle. After the victorious battle he ran to Athens 42 kilometera to bring the good news to the Athenians. He only managed to say 'Nenikisamen' to the Athenians meaning 'We won',and he collapsed from exhaustion and died.
Thank you for sharing your travelling to Marathon and for the historic information! I like Greece and I am looking forward to watching your eleventh Greek adventure episodes.
Dont know how much are you planning to stay in Greece but i would suggest you to visit Veria and Naousa cities up in the north in Emathia region. you can go from the to Vergina village where you can visit the archeological places , the tomb of Philip and the new museum built some months ago. and also in Naousa the place where Aristoteles taught Alexander the great. The place where st paul taught in Veria, the amazing park of st nickolas in Naousa. The museums and the Byzantine churches. its an hour car drive from Thessaloniki.
You are so correct. That battle of marathon changed history. If the Persian army had won wow history could have been much much different for the world. Grrrrr wanna watch entire vid now but no time 😅 looking forward to finishing this later
If this video is anything to go by, your Greek adventure is going to be epic! Already feeling the richness of the history, seeing ruins and towns, and loving every minute of it. Thanks for bringing all of it to life and happy 34th anniversary.😊❤

Thank you Gabriel for teaching me to really enjoy travelling and also without breaking the bank❤ I love Greece, I hope you have a great time😊 god bless you🙏
That blue abandoned car was a Triumph 2000 MK I, from the sixties. My father was driving a MK II in the seventies and I kept driving it until the early nineties.
Welcome Gabriel, Here's a tip, Rhamnous, it's an ancient city very close to marathon, actually next to Agia Marina where the ferry crosses to Euboia Island, oh and you don't have to book just check the website for time of departure and be there...
Haha Gabriel, Love all the Adventures you get into! 😅 Open Museum with nobody there, only in Greece. Greek guy locks you in 5 minutes after you talk to him, only in Greece. Welcome to the Land of the Taba Touba. Where everything & anything can happen…😅 Adds to the excitement LOL. Thanks for putting up with us Brother! 😆 We Love You! 💙👍🏻
I'll confess that when Gabe gets into history I tend to tune out but this one grabbed me. His command of what happened when to whom, and his ability to give us the broad-brush strokes of how the Battle of Marathon affected both eastern and western civilizations, was pretty remarkable. And I loved the expression on his face when he saw the door to the Marathon museum was open. An "oh boy, really?" moment. I think of places like this as pocket museums, small spaces not widely known but with special treasures. I was mesmerized by the photo of the Greek getting a hero's welcome back home after winning in the U.S. Memories of pocket museums can stick with you forever. Unknown ahead of time because they're so small, you just stumble into them. Some of my favorite pocket museums are the tiny Joyce Museum in Dublin, the Croatian Museum of Naive Art in Zagreb, and a Croatian anthropology museum in a little town I can't remember the name of just north of Sibenik. As usual, Gabe gets the music in this video exactly right.
welcome to greece gabriel again ,you have to ask for a greek citizenship ,you love so much greece and is one of your favourite country ,, welcome καλωσορισες

So happy you are back in Greece. Just spend the rest of your days there exploring every inch., every island , every town , every church…… 25:28 Would love to see an immersion in Crete with the Minoan culture! Gretchen
Did you not visit the tombs of Marathon? Were they closed? It would be a shame because it is the actual burial mound of those 200 Athenians, still visible today. The tumuli you showed are from an entirely different era. Very interesting nonetheless, wonderful excursion. You have found a great time to be in Greece during Orthodox Easter, do not miss the epitaph procession on Friday and the Resurrection liturgy at midnight on Saturday.
The Greek victory at Marathon is one of the pivotal moments in Western civilisation. If things went the other way, there''d be no Rome (as we know it),no Christianity, no Europe!

Hi Gabriel, that area around Attica has a tremendous amount of history the Temple of Poseidon among other things to see. I have to admit I was expecting more war sites where the battles were things something to that effect the statues of the heroes of Marathon and so forth. The history of Greece is so important and considered to be the cradle of democracy set the stage for modern political systems known still today.
Temple of Poseidon is on Sounio...on the edge of cap ,in the southern coast, not on the eastern side as are the sites of Marathon around he visited so long..
Thanks for making this video about greek history !Next time visit Marathom beach where the tomb of the Marathon soldiers is located and the idyllic lake of Marathon too after Grammatiko. Take care
Marathon field is a harsh travelling over there with roads without clean direction and sites lost , hidden into the fields and wild gardens... By the main roads you drive and ask locals...the best.
If you're not already familiar, I'd recommend Ryanair Car Hire! Definitely the best prices and makes it clear what coverage you're getting. Typically costs me less for a whole month than what most rental agencies ask me for a week.
Also, pedantry corner! Frankish is not the same as French, although related of course. It refers to a number of related Germanic tribes. In Germany you also have a Franken for example, Franconia in English, the area around Neuremberg. Charlemagne was of course king of the Franks and his empire stretched all over Western Europe so yeah. In the case of that tower built during the crusade area, I think Frankish basically just means Western European. After the death of Charlemagne his empire was famously split up in multiple parts, roughly creating "France" and "Germany" etc...

If the Greeks had failed to defeat the Persians the whole of Europe and the European civilization in general would not exist. Lets think for a moment about that.....
True, no philosophy with Plato etc, no theater with Sophocles Aristophanes etc, no democracy with Pericles, no science with Aristotle …
Europe would’ve been ruled today by Ayatollah. And we would still be in the 14th century.
True but the Persian’s ( IRAN ) 🇮🇷 are having another try . 😊
