I still remember Conan doing the "Yay Boo" song on the Late Night show like fifteen years ago, he used to sing it pretty much every time someone in the audience booed. I was sixteen years old or something, I thought it was the funniest thing ever. I also had the impression he made the song up, this is the first time I'm hearing the original version.

I just binge watch late night clips on youtube every so often and now that I"m catching up on TeamCoco's clips, and with the writer's strike, I'll probably finally be binging on more late night clips soon. 5:40 The extra tragedy of "Smack My Bitch Up" is that there is a really beautiful vocal piece in the middle, that is about 1:30 long, sung by Shahin Badar. It's is really kind of out of step with the rest of song, but they also interlace her vocals into parts of the rest of the song. Her vocal is by far my favorite part. The rest of the song is okay. Except for the title line, which was always kind of cringey and now comes off a lot worse. There are other Prodigy songs I like better. Even on that album.

'Smack my Bitch Up' was actually about injecting drugs - as in: your arm is your 'bitch', and 'smack' is slang for heroin. No idea if that's any better, though - but that's also the reason the messed-up protagonist in Jonas Akerlund's magnificently offensive video turns out to be a woman at the end - it's deliberately controversial, but they still wanted to be clear it wasn't misogynistic.

I remember reading about a guy who used to do the stadium music for the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field. There was a pitcher leaving the game that had recently been arrested for domestic battery, so the guy played Smack My Bitch Up as the pitcher was leaving. Hilarious, but the guy got fired for it.

Drug use and physical abuse have been in many popular songs. It's hilarious that people think they understand what all songs mean and the only way they might be offended is if someone tells them to be.

This immediately made me think of the Artie Kendall The Ghost Crooner character from Late Night.
I get that it was Brian Stack (who, side note... can we get HIM as a guest?) who made the character and it was more based on Bing Crosby, but... wow, I got Artie Kendall vibes from that Yea-Boo song. And that Slap Her Down Again Pa song (which I did look up after this podcast, and... yikes).

Smack my bitch up is British slang. It doesn't mean what Sona thinks it means.
"The phrase "Smack my bitch up" translates to: "Request another to inject you with Heroin or get you high. The phrase does not mean to hit your girlfriend, nor does it advocate violence toward women as it literally implies. "Bitch" being slang for the main vein running down your arm in which heroin is usually injected"
