The alignment what you do is you crack the old tie rod ends before you ever start taking it apart count the number of turns that you are turning it off per side and you will get in with micro meters of almost being right on the money I have once or twice locked out and not had to have an alignment because I had got them numbers just right and by counting the number of turns off on the tie rod end count the numbers back on and you will be right where you were when you started always works for me
Do I need to have my RAM 2500 wheel alignment after this repair? Great video, I will leave the rack replacement to professionals altho I was quoted $1850. Ouch. Maybe they'll include the alignment.
@@DjCBlaq no didn't use any special tools. I can tell you it's cramped quarters and it was difficult. The other advice I would give is make sure to flush your power steering pump. I believe I had metal shavings from a pump going bad and those shavings destroyed my rack. Had to put a new Rack 4 month later
@@deerrudy thanks for the tip! did you end up just flushing the pump or putting a new pump entirely? I'm debating for an older 04 i have thats pretty rusted just putting a whole new rack, pump, and new tie rod bolts as well since its all pretty rusted.
Ah like coming back to these just entertaining to watch watched this a couple times now I’ve had issue with my old ram when I bought it one owner truck well took care of Ah it had 204 thousand on it when the rack began leaking and the 2 dust boots were wet inside of it, it also had sludge on where the 2 hoses connected. It probably would of lasted me another while but I just changed it. From what I remember I think it did leak a little on the passenger side. Bad design with the hemi engine the oil filter is right on top of the passenger side dust boot for the steering rack. I always try and cover the area with a old towel or shirt so I don’t get oil all over the dust boot because it can cause issues with it. Burn it, cause leaking. I still throughly spray and clean the area with some brake cleaner. Then put the oil filter on when I do it’s oil change
Use a tram gauge to measure tie rod end position to get accurate setting, wow vehicle was on all fours before and after being on the lift,,, without realignment,
My bolts were the other way with the 15/16 towards the rear. I seen a few people like you put them in opposite making it accessible to a socket when replacing again. Does it matter which way?
I just put my rack in and when the steering wheel is straight the tie rod threads are extremely uneven. One side has over an inch of threads showing and the other has no threads showing. If I loosen the steering coupler at the rack, it only goes on one way. It’s like my steering is half a turn off. When I turn the steering wheel, it turns farther one way than the other. How can I correct this? 2003 dodge ram 1500 4wd
Thanks for subscribing. I don’t remember what I used to cap the lines but I have a drawer full of plastic caps and plugs that I’ve saved over the years. They come in handy for temporary blocking off lines and hoses.
What was your quoted price I was at a shop today they told me like 300 400 for the rack and then labor they said around 7 725 witch seems high to me this guy did it in like 20 mins I usually only take my truck into the shop when I get lazy otherwise I do the work myself 05 ram 1500

I have a 2010 and my trucks steering wheel has so much play and is so loose would this be the gear box? When I hit a bump it goes side to side and you can hear inside if I hold it straight something is clanking
My steering was annoying on my 2003 1500. Had to hold steering wheel slightly to the left to keep it straight. If I hold the wheel straight while going straight it’ll pull to the right. If I let go of the wheel it’ll pull to the right. Got my wheels aligned. It still felt the same but my wheels were straighter. I drained and refilled my power steering system..... Even though it didn’t look that bad I gave it a whole new front end. Front ends on dodges are notorious for problems and I dislike how the front ends are. I hate the rust. It’s on any older vehicle but people still give shit to dodges for rusting. I do agree. The rear fenders rot because the metal is so shit and there’s no rear fender well plastic inserts. I love dodges for the looks, the powerful motors. Just great trucks to me. I hate the damn front ends and obviously the rust. That’s literally it. I will always own dodges. I have a bunch. A few ram trucks old and new, a Durango, Hellcat challenger, and some old MOPAR. Amazing stuff
@@Tomsfoolery. this was many years ago when I first bought the truck from the original owner. I have put like 60 or 70 somethin thousand miles on it. It has well over 250k currently I haven’t drove my 2003 in a while it’s waiting for some wrenching. I have to get to it. Gonna get rid of its spark plugs gonna look for some higher quality ones. Even though the ones it had done it great. Lol spark plugs are spark plugs. I give it good stuff and take great care of it. Things got expensive oil in it heheheheh. Taking good care of that old reliable! I replaced everything in the front end including the rack. Treat it good. it’s doing well and still going at 250 plus thousand miles.
Hello I do know that Dodge had a bad batch on the knuckles, which led to the hole not being straight. And it was actually on a angle. I believe it was the upper ball joint hole. But the issue was only on the drivers side. Passenger side was fine on the knuckle. Just in case you didn’t know. Which would cause it to pull to the one side. Big Jim.

So I got rid of the old spindle, actually no lol, it’s sitting in my shed. She’s holding up very well and still strong at 250 plus thousand miles. Truck has 0 issues. Original owner loved and took very good care of it. A lot of memories it has with him especially. It’s sticking around solid truck.
My 2020 Dodge Ram classic Electronic Steering failed at 1 mph in parking lot. $5000. Later the electronic throttle control accelerates on it on 4 times on interstate, not even touching the pedal it speeds up on it on.I hit the brake numerous times still accelerates, finally it slowed down and no cruise control ever been used, just 2000 miles on new truck.it is at Dealer now, what good is 70000 mile warranty ,Five years, etc ultimate pkg if ☠️ truck kills you before first oil change ? I do not trust it.😡
If it makes you feel better my 2004 dodge ram with 270k miles is still going strong and has NEVER tried to kill me. lol New cars are so technologically advanced that sometimes it isn't such a good thing!
Great video i have same exact issue.. 04 ram passenger boot leak...i was thinking of trying to use blue devil poeer steering leak sealer..to maybe buy me some time .its only 12$ and has some success in working...has anyone tried similar product?...repkacing entire rack doesnt seem too crazy bad assuming all bolts cooperate which isnt always the case.....if i decide to repair myself where is an affordable part to buy from?..its never easy working on old rusty cars like mine but defintely helps having a lift..but i dont.
I used the power steering leak stop for about a year until the warning light would come on about every 40 miles. Then I decided it was time for replacement.

I pull the truck forward to where the door of the truck is hitting the post at the forward most area. I find that balances almost all trucks evenly on the lift
@@Tomsfoolery. The average customer just has no idea that sometimes replacing the whole part is less time consuming and costs less overall than fussing with removing the inner tie rods to replace the seals. But hey, people have to learn the hard way. Good video, by the way.
on vehicles its better to replace entire parts than to do pieces. With a entire part replaced its cheaper, rather than having a mechanic just fix the one side and pay lets say 500 bucks then in a few weeks or months you have to pay another 500 bucks to just the other side fixed. Why do that when you can replace the whole thing for just 700 that AND your in the shop for less time. *(note just throwing out numbers)* I plan on replacing my Rack and Pinion as well as my Brakes (all 4 tires, I have disk) on my own. Its going to cost me a fraction compared to what it would be in the shop, and I get the experience on doing it myself. The only thing I have to take it to the shop for is the alignment which is fine, that needs to be professionally done. Part replacement however, especially now-a-days? Give me a few minutes online, a parts manual, and some daylight, I'll get my vehicle back on the road myself

They usually do include an alignment into the quote but ouch on that price tag!

If you use a jack and lift up on wheel before hitting the knuckle the tie rod end will come out easier same with user ball joint

Not on the rack and pinion style. The 3/4 ton trucks with a traditional gear box do however.

I just got quoted $930 for my 2008 today and started looking for some instruction to do it myself which lead me here.
