- This food tour in Jhansi began with a brief visit to Sipri Bazaar, starting by paying our respects at Shri Raghunath Ji Ka Mandir. From there, we headed to Basant Yadav Tea Stall, where we had one of the best chai experiences. Their special chai was a delightful blend of tea leaves, instant coffee powder, cardamom, ginger, sugar, and a touch of salt. The unique combination of ingredients created a warm, comforting drink with layers of flavors that perfectly captured the essence of Indian street tea.
Next, we arrived at Manoj Sweet & Chelaram's, a bustling spot known for its festive sweets and snacks, especially with Holi around the corner. We indulged in a variety of treats, including shakarpara, gurpara, suhali, mathri, gujiya, imarti, sev, singhar ji mithai, samosas, rasmalai, and more. Each bite was a celebration of Jhansi’s vibrant street food culture, with sweets and savories that evoked the joy of the upcoming festivities.
Our journey then led us to Tatya Village Farm, where we were warmly welcomed by the genial Arpit Purohit. Excited to experience authentic Bundelkhandi cuisine, we sat down for a traditional thali served on a leaf platter. All the dishes were prepared over a wood fire, adding a rustic, smoky flavor to the meal. The thali included spicy mangodi fritters, kadhi pakoda with its tangy buttermilk gravy, and maheri, a comforting cornmeal and buttermilk porridge.
We also tried bara, a black gram lentil fritter soaked in spiced buttermilk and topped with bura sugar, as well as besan sev, a crunchy snack. The meal featured hearty breads like makki ki roti, bajre ki roti, and gehun ki roti, paired with flavorful accompaniments such as aloo baingan chokha, mixed dal, jeera aloo, chawal, papad, and green chilli pickle. The fried green chillies and salad provided a refreshing contrast to the richer dishes. The meal was rounded off with cool buttermilk and the perfect sweet finish of soft, syrupy rasgulla. The entire experience was a delicious exploration of Bundelkhand's culinary heritage, enjoyed in the peaceful setting of the farm.
