    I cannot believe that you actually have to "defend" your choices concerning your garden. even if you had not replaced those trees it should not matter to people. you explained why you did it and those reasons were sound. I love your garden and what you have done with is so far.

      Seems like no matter what one does nowadays, someone else will have something nasty to say about it. Comes with the territory I guess. One should always just ignore those people rahter than engage.

      Oh I totally agree with you. Laura is so wonderful and she shouldn't have to justify anything. She has a baby and nieces who walk around the property. God forbid one of those trees was to fall and hurt a child. I think you did the right thing Laura!

      Diseased and old trees are dangerous. We had a massive pecan that it took almost 3 people to wrap there arms around. It cam down in a storm after a few weeks of rain. So thankful it did not fall on house or people children or pets. I agree that Laura shouldn't have to explain her choices.

    Nothing to feel bad about replacing unhealthy trees with any healthy ones. I live in the city and had to remove a storm damaged Autumn Blaze maple 3 years ago, replaced it with a Northwoods Maple 2 years ago it is starting to throw a decent amount of shade. Also have 2 Amur maples and 3 small Japanese maples in my yard. You and your husband are such an inspiration that I have tackled a messy garden have transplanted, purchased and mulched and it is looking good. Next year it will be stunning, with all the new growth. Speaking of new growth, how is little Benjamin? Can't wait to see him toddling around outside. Love from Minnesota(zone 4).

    Laura limbs falling down off of diseased trees is a reality and can injure children and people. We took down a 100 plus year old tree because of the risks it posed to individuals walking beneath it. We missed the massive shade the tree provided but it simply wasn’t worth the continued risk to family, friends and children. Glad you addressed the issue.

    • @MosaicRose99
      @MosaicRose99 6 лет назад

      This is true. I remember those bigger branches falling off of that diseased tree that Aaron and Laura took out. Their late kitty, Dexter used to go under that tree all the time. If they kept that tree, then the same danger would have been there for their current kitty, Russell, and God forbid, for their son Benjamin when he becomes older and is walking around their yard.

    You do not have to justify your choices for the development of your garden and home. Many people have very short sighted views and don't see the overall picture or understand the ultimate plan you have in mind. Even if those trees were healthy(which you said they were not) trees have a finite life expectancy and do not last forever. I have taken to heart your adage "If you don't like what is there then take it out and put in what you do like." A mantra that has freed me(and I'm sure others)from trying to work around plants and trees that I don't like. Thanks for the videos and advice. Love them all.
    The straight line is a very good idea. The trees are in a more formal configuration, I think, and need to be straight. Kinda hard to change once they are planted. Good planning.

With 8 acres to masterplan from bare paddock to family-friendly rural garden with...well, smaller paddocks, it's very reassuring to have a resource like this to pinch ideas from ;) It's easy to get lost in the possibilities, but I think Maples might be a good starting place. Are you familiar with Gator Bags? They are 5(I think) gallon bags that fit around the trunk of a tree (with a zipper). You fill from the top and they empty from the bottom through small holes. They save time, water and you don't have to remember to turn a hose off...

    • @teleburke
      @teleburke 6 лет назад +2

      Benson Marshall , I love the gator bags. I am guessing they might not look as great in the videos though! I transplanted a lace leave maple in 90 degree heat 3 years ago. It came out of the ground with very few small roots. With loving care and a gator bag it has survived!

      I'm not sure if it is made by the same company or not but there is a watering bag on the market that looks like a brown donut... It's not quite as user-friendly... But it accomplishes the same thing and looks a little better. Is designed specifically for trees that have branches low on the trunk.

    I had to remove two elms from my front yard, but waited too long. During a storm, a large limb landed on my house piercing through the roof of my house not only damaging the roof but went in at an angle that it went through the ceiling of my sons bedroom. Thank goodness he had left the house just before the storm hit. I do not like removing trees either, but safety comes first. Thank you for all your videos. You are truly an inspiration🍃🌷🌳🌸🌿🍂🍁

    Hi Laura and Aaron, the next time you have Q&A or during one of your videos, can you talk about planting in clay soil? I don’t see you amending your soil with compost, which is what nurseries around me recommend for success with trees, shrubs and perennials. I also don’t want to create root rot by creating a pool around a root ball. I would love to hear your wisdom! Thank you for inspiring us! ❤️🌱. I know this is a four year old video, but while going through your videos, I've been watching for a few years now, I came across it while looking for trees to plant in zone 5a. I just wanted to say, when we moved into our home two years ago we had to remove an absolutely beautiful Crimson Maple because it was huge, but touching the roof and house. They had planted it so close 21 years ago not taking into account just how big it would be. I hated to have that tree cut down, but that's just what we did. I'm sure some of our neighbors had a thing or two to say about it! Oh well, just like you we've already planted a few more trees and are now looking for a front yard tree.

    Planting trees make you ever so mindful of the passage of time. How much you have truly lived- beneath their quiet presence... harvesting blackberries as big as your thumb; cutting bouquets of summer flowers for your windowsill; curled up with a brand new grandbaby in your arms napping under their rustling canopy. When did the fir tree get twice as tall as the house? the cedars encircle the backyard with their skirt of green boughs? When did the magnolia tree reach my 2nd story window? With their early spring blooms and leafy midsummer camouflage I had forgotten that it was only waist high when we first met. I am reminded of our newlywedded optimism when Michael and I planted the flowering dogwood in the front yard our first year. We weren't naive, blending a family, just fiercely determined. This tree would be our testament. Taller than the front porch now, every spring when it blooms it tells us, we were right.

I can’t wait till spring! Here in Ohio it’s a flip of a coin as to when the last frost will be, but I’m ready. Thank you for your wonderful videos and the time it takes to prepare them. You have a beautiful family and home. Your personality is contagious and your energy ...wow😅. God Bless 😇❤️

    I'm looking forward to seeing those Maple trees this falll. When watching your videos I have to remind myself that my property is super small and those trees will not fit for me!

    Another item to add to my garden book!! I've had similar maples in the past but before you and Aaron I didn't pay attention. Thank you both for peeking my interest and sharing your plans for your garden So pretty!🌳

    Those maples are gorgeous! I can imagine how great they'll look when fully grown. I've seen additional photos of them and in winter weather the red branches are even more beautiful! Your family will love them for many, many years to come! 💜

    I live in London and only have a tiny patio garden with high basement walls but we transformed it. We rent so one day when we move we will take everything with us. More than 3/4 are in pots and it’s going to be like Mary Poppins‘ bag when all the plants come out of our front door lol. I love all the inspiration you give me for when I have a bigger garden!

    Oh my you know there are unfortunately people who feel the need to spread hateful comments without pausing to listen to the other person. You guys have every right to do what you are doing with your property and your trees!!! Love Aaron's plumb line that he did to get your straight line, quick thinking there Aaron! It was also funny to see the look on his face at the garden center when you decided on the bigger tree instead of the one that was cheaper LOL He should know you by now and you always try to get the best product for your money. Love how this is going to look in a few years!!!Thanks for another awesome video! Oh and thanks so much for using the new garden cart, I am trying to convince my director that we need one of these for our playground as it will help with clean up for sure!!

    It will be lovely to drive slowly down The Maple Alee...
    Wonderful project!
    I’ve planted 23 trees on our large city lot in the 21 years we’ve been here.
    I love planting trees, but have no more room, so I’m tree planting vicariously through your projects!

    We have a gorilla cart as our only wheelbarrow and love it. We don’t think the plastic is flimsy at all. We do add 2’ tall wood posts to insert into the slots on top to haul out tree cuttings and when removing junipers. I love your row of trees! I’m inspired. What a huge decision to make and I look forward to updates!

    Maybe during the winter when things slow down a bit, you and Aaron can revisit/review these episodes and show after pictures from this Spring, Summer, Fall. I think it was originally Laura’s idea to “plant them high so they don’t die”.

    The trees look great. I’ve always loved the allée style of driveway with a row of trees on either side especially when they join over the top in an arch. Anyone giving you flak about removing those trees has no real understanding of disease and safety considerations with old (or any) trees. You’ve definitely done your part to keep trees in your space for generations to come. I wish the red point maple was hardy to zone three. Beautiful choice.

    MAN, those maples are going to be so beautiful in fall! The glow of sunset will make them especially beautiful. My fall favorites are always the bright orange and bright red trees, partly because we just don't have that many of them here.

    I wish I could grow a maple in our yard but I cherish what sunny space I have. I have been seriously bitten by the gardening bug thanks to you. I live in FL where we have to make sure we don,t have diseased trees or we are in big trouble during hurricane season. Of course you have to make the decision to be safe!
